istóricamente Estados Unidos casi siempre se ha sentido cómodo y animado combatiendo al “enemigo externo”: el comunismo, la amenaza de las drogas. Pero tradicionalmente ha sido menos entusiasta cuando se trata de combatir las disfunciones internas, en especial la amenaza real del terrorismo doméstico violento.

istorically, the United States has almost always felt comfortable and encouraged fighting the "external enemy": communism, the threat of drugs. But it has traditionally been less than enthusiastic when it comes to combating internal dysfunctions, especially the real threat of violent domestic terrorism.

In 2009, an analyst from the Department of Homeland Security, Daryl Johnson, warned about the resur-

The analysis was leaked to conservative media in what unleashed a wave of indignation among Republicans, who at that time demanded that the then Secretary of Internal Security, Janet Napolitano, rescind the report and fire the intrepid analyst who dared to suggest the existence of an internal threat within the country.

In 2017, Johnson regretted that the Department of Homeland Security gave in to pressure and that work related to far-right violent extremism has been put on hold, that training for officers in that specialty has been terminated, and that his own analysis unit has been dismantled.

by FBI Director Christopher Wray that there are around 2,000 investigations related to domestic terrorism in the United States, give Johnson the reason.

Not that the former national security analyst had a crystal ball. The reality of domestic extremism, which has been systematically documented by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for decades, was in full view. It is simply more convenient to identify and fight an external enemy than the enemy within your own home.

On the SPLC website anyone can see the map of the United States marked by white dots of the geographical distribution of the 838 hate groups - Nazis, Ku Klux Klan, supremacists - that the organization monitors every day. One can find out for example that in the year 2000 599 groups were monitored. In 2011, in the middle of the Obama presidency, the number of tracked groups reached its highest level, with a total of 1,018.

More than half of all reported hate crimes in the United States correspond to racially or ethnically motivated attacks in 2018. It is a terrible paradox that in the COVID-19 era, minorities of color are not only the most disproportionately affected for the Coronavirus, but also for the pandemic of violent extremism.

Almost a decade has passed since the analyst's warning about the resurgence of violent extreme right-wing extremism. It is to be expected that the events of January 6th will be a watershed and that the country will take that introspective look that it so desperately needs to begin to see and neutralize its internal enemies.

CALIFORNIA’S $6.6 BILLION SCHOOL RE-OPENING PLAN PRIORITIZES LOW-INCOME, SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN

embers of the California state Legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled a $6.6 billion school re-opening plan, which aims to get children in grades kindergarten through 6th back to classrooms by March 15, and older children by mid next month.

“We need to make up for delays and keep our students on track, but we also know that our teachers are concerned about family members who may be at greater risk of exposure (to COVID,” he said, during a press briefing at Franklin Elementary School in the Elk Grove Unified School District. Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon also attended the briefing along with members of the state Legislature.

The plan prioritizes students who would benefit the most from in-person instruction kids from low-income families who may lack computing devices and high-speed internet, English language learners, and those with learning disabilities, among other disadvantaged students.

The additional dollars will include money for extended academic and mental health support, help schools adjust for smaller classrooms, and provide Personal Protective Equipment for three months. The state is also set to receive $8 billion in federal funding to re-open schools, and may receive additional funding in the proposed $1.9 trillion COVID relief package.

Schools are set to re-open even in the state’s most-restrictive purple tier. Schools will likely operate over summer to catch students up with coursework missed during the year of remote learning.

som, noting that positive testing rates have dropped to 2.4 percent, from a high of over 9 percent at the start of the year.

Hospitalization and intensive care unit admissions have also dropped by 41 percent. More than 9 million people in California have received at least one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine — which requires two doses for full efficacy — and more people are expected to be vaccinated as the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which only requires one shot and was approved Feb. 27, rolls out.

The California Teachers Association released a statement Feb. 23, noting that the state Legislature had heeded its recommendations.

After you’ve been vaccinated, it’s still important to wear a mask, wash your hands often and continue to stay six feet apart to protect others in your community who have not yet been vaccinated.

I encourage every Californian to get vaccinated as soon as it’s your turn. Together, we can end the pandemic.

ASHVILLE, Tenn. - The number of Latino students on college campuses fell by 20% last year, largely because of COVID-19-related job loss or illness, and so far, enrollment isn't showing signs of bouncing back.

The trend reverses gains made over the years in higher education among Latino students nationwide.

Deborah Santiago, chief executive of the nonprofit advocacy group Excelencia in Education, said many students have dropped out or delayed enrollment to help their families cope with reduced household income and coronavirus illness.

ada año, millones de estadounidenses se enferman de "influenza estacional" ("la gripe"). Según los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), más de 38 millones de personas se enfermaron de influenza durante la temporada de influenza 2019-2020. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 38 million people got sick with the flu during the 2019-2020 flu season. The flu is more dangerous than the common cold and children are at higher risk for developing serious complications. More than 12 million children under the age of 18 were diagnosed with flu last year, and of those children diagnosed, more than 52,000 were hospitalized. However, there are preventive steps parents can take to protect their children and family from the flu.

Flu viruses change each year, so the best way to keep your kids and teens healthy is to make sure they get their yearly flu shot. The flu is a serious illness, but getting the flu shot helps lower the number of hospital visits and deaths. Remember, even healthy kids can get sick from the flu and spread it to family and others.

This year, it’s more important than ever for children 6 months and older, as well as

adults, to get a seasonal flu shot. The CDC recommends getting a flu shot early in the season, but getting it at any time during the flu season can help.

Medicaid offers free or low-cost health insurance for eligible kids up to age 21; the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) covers eligible kids up to age 19. Medicaid and CHIP covers vaccinations for children, like the flu shot, but also other services like preventive care, well-child visits, dental and vision care, and mental and behavioral health care. Eligibility varies by state and depends on your household size and income. On average, a family of four earning up to $50,000 a year or more may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Enrollment is open all year, but you have to renew your health coverage yearly.

AN FRANCISCO - The pandemic has had devastating impacts on the LGBTQ+ community, so the 1 million-member Equality California has launched a bilingual, statewide education and outreach campaign.

Unveiled on Tuesday March 2nd, the idea is to make sure people know when and where to get the vaccine, and also to promote the science that shows the new coronavirus vaccines are safe and highly effective.

Rick Chavez Zbur, executive director of Equality California, said COVID-19 has taken a toll on the health and well-being of many in the LGBTQ+ community.

"And that's particularly true for the most vulnerable members of our community," he said, "transgender and gender non-conforming people, LGBTQ+ people of color and immigrants and people living with HIV or other pre-existing conditions."

The latest study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found the LGBTQ+ population is more vulnerable to COVID, in part because it also has higher rates of underlying health conditions, including cancer and HIV. Last fall, researchers at UCLA surveyed more than 12,000 American adults on the impact of the pandemic. Study coauthor Kerith Conron, research director at the UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute, said the numbers show COVID-19 especially has been prevalent among non-white LGBTQ+ people.

"LGBT people of color were more likely to be positive," she said, "about twice as

likely as non-LGBT white people."

Last spring, the Equality Institute launched a telephone help line at 323448-1026 and an online help center at Covid19.eqca.org to link people to employment services, food assistance, culturally competent health-care providers and testing centers. The bilingual portion of the site will be launched in the coming weeks.

AN FRANCISCO - Low- to moderate-income residents of the Bay Area can get free, secure and highquality tax help through United Way Bay Area’s Earn It! Keep It! Save It! (EKS) program. IRS-certified, volunteer tax preparers are ready now to assist anyone who needs help—including undocumented ITIN filers—and will ensure residents receive the best possible refunds. For example, taxpayers who made less than $30,000 in 2020 may be eligible for up to $6,000 in state and federal tax credits, depending on income and family size.

EKS has partnered with Code for America to offer safe, online filing and some in-person assistance is available. Find details at www.uwba.org/tax-help.

“Thanks to new legislation, the California Earned Income Tax Credit (Cal EITC) and Young Child Tax Credit will be available to all eligible, working Californians in 2021. That includes younger workers, those over 65, and undocumented taxpayers filing with an ITIN, but people must complete their taxes correctly to get the refunds,” said Kelly Batson, Chief Community Impact Officer at United Way Bay Area. “EKS services start with a quick online interview, then residents upload their tax documents, and our team does the rest. People who are unable to use online services can get help in person at select

EKS locations.”

EKS volunteers help Bay Area taxpayers earning less than $57,000 per year receive the best possible refunds by ensuring they claim all deductions and tax credits available. For example, recent changes to California tax laws removed the requirement for ITIN tax filers to have at least one child under the age of six to qualify for the Cal EITC. Starting in 2021, undocumented residents with ITINs can also access the Cal EITC to claim up to $3,027. The $1,000 Young Child Tax Credit also is available for all qualifying families with children 5 and under.

Perhaps most importantly, EKS volunteers ensure that Bay Area taxpayers who qualify have access the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). One of the most powerful poverty-fighting safety net programs in the country, the Federal EITC can provide eligible families with three or more qualifying children up to a $6,660 credit.

Each year, EKS clients collectively save at least $20 million in tax preparation fees and their returns filed by EKS volunteers bring more than $80 million in federal tax refunds back to the local Bay Area community. Since 2003, volunteers have facilitated almost a billion dollars in refunds to Bay Area households.

The DMV has heard from multiple customers who have received a text message stating, “Our records indicate that your contact information must be updated for REAL ID Compliance. Provide an Up-to-date Mailing Address and Phone Number.” When customers click the continue button, the following message appears: “Action Needed: Due to an update on our new regulation complaint, every CaDMV customer must update their contact information. Update now at: (a fictitious link).” This text message is NOT from the DMV. “The DMV has not sent such a text, nor would we,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “We offer secure online services and send text messages for some services, but never ask for personal information outside of a secure DMV account accessed by the customer.”

The DMV does not send customers unsolicited requests for information.

When the DMV texts or emails customers, it is based on action initiated by the customer. For example, customers may receive an appointment reminder or cancelation notice by text or email from the DMV. Also, when a customer establishes an online account with DMV or has initiated an interactive, assisted online transaction with the DMV, further information may be requested.

The department recommends its customers ignore or delete any unsolicited texts or emails requesting personal information on behalf of the DMV. Customers can report the phishing attack to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. If you receive a phishing email, forward it to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org. For a phishing text message, forward it to SPAM

En “Something About Christmas, la importancia de su mensaje radica en el retomar el valor espiritual que encierra la Navidad. El Nacimiento de Jesús en el pesebre, es el inicio de una relación de amor y reconciliación que Dios quiere establecer con la humanidad y que no tiene fin, sino que permanece para siempre, y por tal motivo, en cualquier época del año, será siempre posible celebrar la Navidad.

El mensaje de “Colt the Courageous” tiene como propósito, el de ayudar a entender la dislexia, no dentro de su complejidad médica, sino de una manera más pragmática y sencilla y a su vez dar una luz de esperanza, al problema de aprendizaje, que con ayuda profesional, apoyo familiar y mucho empeño, es posible superar los obstáculos y convertirse en un “superhéroe”. ¿Cómo se comparan sus libros más recientes con lo que ha hecho en el pasado? ¿Hubo algo que fue un desafío?

Siempre empezar un nuevo libro es un desafío. Trato de manera personal, desarrollar y probar nuevas técnicas. En estos libros, por ejemplo las ilustraciones fueron hechas de forma digital, a diferencias de mis otros libros que fueron hecho a mano. En términos de estilos, en “Something

Q&A: THE ART OF HECTOR CURRIEL Our editorial cartoonist talks about his new children's books, “Something About Christmas” and “Colt the Courageous”

The purpose of the message of "Colt the Courageous" is to help understand the dyslexia, not within its medical complexity, but in a more pragmatic and simple way and at the same time give a light of hope, to the learning problem, which with professional help, family support and a lot of effort, it is possible to overcome obstacles and become a “superhero”.

While not cooking up illustrated interpretations of our lives, both in the political and natural with his fine art, he is also a teacher and a children’s book artist.

Recently we had the opportunity to talk to him about his newest works, two children's novels that released in late 2020. A bit different than his political cartoon contributions to El Observador, we were curious to see how his talents translated within the world of book illustration.

In "Something About Christmas", written by Tom Roberts and illustrated by Curriel, a young boy is sad that Christmas is over, and it is time to put the decorations away when his parents help him realize that Christmas continues to exist in the dawn of each new day.

With "Colt the Courageous", the story is centered around an outgoing thirdgrader named Colt Davidson. He is also a child who has dyslexia.

The story is meant to encourage children with dyslexia, and their parents or guardians to have hope and compassion. It also serves as a tool for parents to talk to their dyslexic child.

The book's font is even displayed in Dyslexie, a font designed to make reading easier for the dyslexic reader.

In the following interview, Curriel answers some of our questions on the creation of his latest illustrative works and how he goes about designing and envisioning his drawings.

Could you describe what each book is about?

"Something About Christmas" is a children's book written by Tom Roberts and published by the Sioux Falls Children Home Society. The book addresses the theme of Christmas, from the point of view of a child, who sees with sadness and nostalgia the end of the holiday, but whose parents lovingly remind him that the true meaning of Christmas actually goes

My second book is titled, "Colt the Courageous" and it is written by Courtney Davidson. It tells the story of a boy named Colt, who suffers from dyslexia and who despite suffering from that condition, finds a way to get ahead, in the process of learning at school.

How do your latest books compare to what you have done in the past?

Was there something that was challenging?

Starting a new book is always a challenge. I treat it in a personal way, while I develop and test new techniques.

In these books, for example, the illustrations were done digitally, unlike my other books that were made by hand. In terms of styles, in “Something About Christmas” I tried to emulate the style of the great American illustrator Norman Rockwell, of whom I am a fervent admirer.

How did you figure out how to visualize the images in each story?

Knowing fully the history of the book and the motivations of the writer are very important aspects when creating the illustrations. We know that illustrations are not merely decorative, but on the contrary, to help the reader better understand the message of the story and fall in love with it.

Is there anything else you would like to add that we haven't covered yet?

l año pasado, US$ 2 mil millones en créditos tributarios del estado para las familias que trabajan no se reclamaron en el condado de Santa Clara. ¿El principal motivo? Las personas no sabían que podían solicitarlos. Si lo supiesen, cada familia habría recibido cientos – o hasta miles – de dólares que se podrían haber utilizado para pagar las compras de mercado, el alquiler, la ropa y los servicios públicos.

No hagamos el mismo error este año.

Depende de nosotros ayudar a hacer correr la voz sobre el Crédito Tributario por Ingresos de Trabajo de California (CalEITC), que aplica a los trabajadores que cobraron menos que US$ 30.000 en 2020. Ello incluye la gente que trabaja en tiempo completo y cobra el salario mínimo del estado.

ast year, $2 billion in state tax credits for working families was left unclaimed in California. The main reason? People weren’t aware they were eligible for them.

Had they known, individual families would have received hundreds, even thousands, of dollars that could have gone toward groceries, rent, clothing, and utilities.

Let’s not make the same mistake this year.

It’s up to us to help spread the word about the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), which applies to workers who made less than $30,000 in 2020. That includes folks who work full-time at the state minimum wage.

Last year, a single mother who lived in far northern California came into a volunteer tax preparation site for help. She had been able to work just a few months of the previous year and made about $10,000. She hadn’t planned to file, since she made less than the filing requirement—but after she did, she received nearly $8,000 back. The credits almost doubled her income.

In fact, these credits are one of the best programs around for mitigating child poverty, and poverty in general. A 2018 analysis found that federal and state EITCs keep more than 1.1 million Californians from poverty, including 488,000 children. In Santa Clara County specifically, the credits keep 5,700 children from poverty and 2,700 children from deep poverty.

The same analysis found that the main reason people don’t claim the credits is because their earnings are too low to file a tax return, so they aren’t “prompted” to claim them. Ironically, these are the lowest income workers, who likely need the credit the most.

That’s why our community must do all it can to encourage workers to file, and let them know free tax filing help is available at www. myfreetaxes.org.

For the first time this year, workers with an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer ID Number)—primarily undocumented workers—are eligible to file for the CalEITC credits, and for free tax help. ITIN filers are treated the same as filers with Social Security Numbers, meaning their information is confidential.

Though ITIN filers aren’t eligible for the federal EITC, they could receive up to $2,982 from the CalEITC and up to $1,000 from the Young Child Tax Credit. Since these filers are newly eligible this year, it’s especially important to reach out to immigrant communities with information.

The need to spread the word is clear. A 2016 statewide survey conducted by the California Budget Policy Center found only 17% of people who are eligible for the CalEITC have heard about the tax credit. And nearly 80% of the households that qualify have children, the state Franchise Tax Board says. You can help with outreach to families by using First 5 Association of California’s toolkit of English and Spanish resources.

With 2020 bringing painful job losses and economic struggle to families, the need for tax credits is direr than ever. Families can file right now—and get their returns back sooner than if they wait a couple months. It’s time to bring all hands on deck, and look out for our neighbors with lower income—many of whom have supported us and risked their health this past year as essential workers. It’s their money; let’s make sure they get it.

One-quarter of the world’s 20,000 bee species are in precipitous decline or have already gone extinct since 1990. A range of causes are to blame, including indiscriminate overuse of pesticides, loss of plants, and habitat destruction from human encroachment. But the latest and greatest threat is now climate change, which is warping the bees’ environments (blooming seasons, plant diversity, etc.) at a faster rate than they are able to adapt.

Today in the U.S. only eight bee species are afforded protection under the Endangered Species Act. Seven are found only in Hawaii while the other, the Rusty patched bumble bee, occupies the tallgrass prairie of the Upper Midwest, most of which has been lost to farmland, strip malls and housing developments. Rusty patched bee populations have fallen off by 87 percent as a result.

In February 2021, conservation groups petitioned the Biden administration to grant the American bumblebee endangered species protection as well. Once the most common type of bee from coast-to-coast, this iconic bee has declined by some 89 percent in just the last two decades alone. Conservationists are worried about the implications for beepollinated plants and the animals (like us) that depend on them.

While the bees’ decline worldwide is unquestionably due to human activity, the silver lining is that human activity can also help bring them back. A new map of global bee distribution and density created by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Georgia aims to help conservationists track the health of various bee populations across the U.S. and around the globe.

As for what readers can do to help bees, plant some native plants that attract them to your backyard. Regardless, if you happen to see bees nearby, snap some photos of them with your phone and upload them to iNaturalist so researchers can use your sighting to help track population dynamics. For more ideas on how you can help bees rebound locally, check out the website of the Bee Conservancy, a U.S.based non-profit that is coordinating efforts to save bee populations around the world.

The good news is that bee populations in the U.S. and globally have seen a slight increase during the course of the COVID pandemic, due to reduced human activity. But the problem is hardly solved—especially as we all get back to business as usual.

American bumblebee numbers have fallen by 89% over the last two decades across the U.S., and conservationsists want the Biden administration to add this little flying stinger to the Endangered Species List.

AN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS, Calif. -- A massive public-lands bill, now headed to the U.S. Senate, would better protect more than three million acres of public land, including one million acres in California.

The Protecting America's Wilderness and Public Lands Act combines eight pieces of legislation, including four that cover the Golden State.

Belinda Faustinos, executive director of the nonprofit Nature for All, said bills like the San Gabriel Mountains Foothills and Rivers Protection Act will make the wilderness experience much more accessible to families.

"The U.S. Forest Service has managed the San Gabriel Mountains for purposes of water supply, which is critically important," Faustinos pointed out. "However, there was very little attention paid to how it could be managed as a recreational resource."

COVID-19 FUELS THE THREAT OF GLOBAL FAMINE The pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity around the world. The World Food Program is short of resources to alleviate hunger.

onflicts, climate change and now COVID-19 are the three C’s driving 270 million people to famine in the most impoverished countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central and Latin America. Officials at the World Food Program (WFP), the hunger relief arm of the United Nations that feeds about a hundred million people each year in some 88 countries, warned that they are running out of resources to meet the demand for staple foods and thus prevent people dying from starvation.

About 4 million people out of a population of 30 have become internal refugees while food prices are on average 140 times higher than before the war.

"The hunger situation right now in Yemen has hit a new peak," said Annabel Symington, head of communications for the WFP in Yemen. "The forecast for 2021 is that 50,000 people are already living in famine like conditions, another 5 million are at severe risk of falling into famine and about 11 million people are facing crisis levels of food insecurity," she added.

“We are asking globally $13.5 billion for our budget this year, but we forecast being able to raise only about $7.8 billion," said Steve Taravella, WFP’s senior spokesperson at a briefing organized by Ethnic Media Services on Feb. 26.

Before the pandemic, there were about 135 million people acutely hungry in the world, but the collateral economic impacts of the virus have doubled that number. WFP estimates that in 2021, about 19,000 officials working in developing countries will have to duplicate efforts to serve at least 120 million people, in hardest-hit places like Yemen, South Sudan, Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

"For some years WFP and others working on global hunger were really effective in bringing hunger down to what we hoped would be the zero hunger goal of the UN by 2030. It's pretty clear now, that's not going to happen," Taravella said. "COVID is making the poorest of the world poorer and the hungriest of the world hungrier.”

WFP won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for its efforts to eradicate hunger in areas where natural disasters and conflict have disrupted normal food distribution channels. Areas where bombed roads prevent trucks carrying flour, rice, lentils, peas, cooking oil and salt from getting through. Areas where airstrikes destroy planes carrying dietary supplies.

Areas where incessant fighting prevents hungry people from venturing out for food or aid workers from moving safely to provide it, at a time when crops cannot be harvested.

"There have been terrorist acts against villagers and aid workers by Al-Qaeda Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram and ISIS," Taravella said. Recently, a WFP staff member was killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo while accompanying the Italian ambassador on a visit to a school feeding site.

WFP provides school meals in the classrooms, helps pregnant women and new mothers to understand nutrition, and supports small farmers to find markets for their produce.

“We work very closely with governments but we see ourselves there only as a temporary band-aid.

Our goal is to help build the country's capacity to manage the programs," said Taravella.

Although the WFP does not operate food banks in the United States, immigrants in the country have contributed greatly to alleviating hunger in their homelands after natural disasters such as the typhoon that devastated the Philippines or the hurricanes in Central America. But COVID has also impacted remittances.

Devastating hurricanes “When COVID hit, we were really hoping that the hurricane season will be a quiet one as we had a few years ago, but that was not the case,” said Elio Rujano, communications officer for the WFP’'s regional bureau for Central America and the Caribbean.

The 2020 season produced 30 named storms, of which 13 became hurricanes, six of them devastating in scope. Eta and Iota ravaged areas in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua while tropical storm Amanda hit El Salvador. Since 2014, these countries have already been experiencing prolonged periods of droughts or excessive rains caused by the El Niño phenomenon, both causing the destruction of crops and the livelihood of farmer families.

"In the past we were only focusing on the dry corridor where rural farmers live, but now, because of the pandemic, hunger has expanded to urban areas," Rujano said from his Panama City office. "50%

Mothers are resorting to desperate measures to survive: either they eat less to feed their children or they must choose which of their kids eat.

After COVID, death rates skyrocketed, but as the testing capacity is limited, it is unknown for sure how many people contracted the virus. "The lockdown was lifted quite early because people will starve if they stay at home," Symington said.

"It is clear that peace is what Yemen needs so we can address the food crisis," she added.

Migrants in India In India, the country with the highest number of food insecure people due to its large population (1.3 billion inhabitants), the pandemic worsened the living conditions for domestic migrants.

Almost 139 million people move from rural areas to large cities to work in informal jobs in factories or as street vendors. The coronavirus forced them to go back to their villages, and since transportation was not working, they had to move by foot, facing not only long hours of walking but hunger. The pandemic also disrupted the harvesting season in March and April affecting food supply chains.

"Although the restrictions (due to the pandemic) have been eased out and these people came back to the cities, there are very few jobs due to the economic slowdown," said from New Delhi Parul Sachdeva, country advisor in India for Give2Asia, an NGO that supports grassroots organizations in 23 countries in Asia Pacific.

"Today 8 in 10 people are eating less food than before the pandemic and nearly 1 in 3 people face moderate or severe food insecurity."

The government approved a package of US $22.6 billion for the distribution of staple foods during four months and cash transfers of $ 500 rupees (US $ 7) for up to three months. But informal workers were left out of the package, forcing civil society organizations to support those returning to their villages with meals, health supplies and shelter.

Organizations like Akshaya Patra distributed 1.8 million meals a day to children across India. GIve2Asia is now working on economic rehabilitation through training and input costs for agriculture.

"These are the kind of activities we wish to promote," Sachdeva added. "I think they provide some kind of solution for livelihood regeneration in a country like ours," she concluded.

COVID-19 ALIMENTA LA AMENAZA DE HAMBRUNA GLOBAL La pandemia ha agravado la inseguridad alimentaria en todo el mundo. El Programa Mundial de Alimentos se ve corto de recursos para paliar el hambre.

os conflictos, el cambio climático y ahora la COVID-19 son las tres C’s que están llevando a la hambruna a 270 millones de personas en los lugares más empobrecidos de Asia, Oriente Medio, África, Centroamérica y América Latina. Funcionarios del Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA), el brazo de las Naciones Unidas que alimenta a unas cien millones de personas cada año en unos 88 países, advirtieron que se están quedando sin recursos para satisfacer la demanda de alimentos básicos y así evitar que la gente muera de inanición.

El conflicto ha contribuido a que casi la mitad de todos los niños menores de 5 años en Yemen enfrenten desnutrición aguda, lo que no solo afecta su desarrollo físico y cognitivo, sino que los pone en riesgo de muerte. 11,2 millones de madres embarazadas o en período de lactancia también están desnutridas y según Symington estos números pueden estar subestimados.

Las madres están recurriendo a medidas desesperadas para sobrevivir: o comen menos para alimentar a sus hijos o deben elegir cuál de sus niños come.

“Estamos pidiendo a nivel mundial US$13.500 millones para nuestro presupuesto este año, pero pronosticamos que sólo podremos recaudar alrededor de US$7.800 millones”, aseguró Steve Taravella, portavoz principal del PMA, en una conferencia organizada por Ethnic Media Services.

Tras la llegada de COVID, las tasas de mortalidad se dispararon pero como la capacidad de testeo es limitada no se sabe a ciencia cierta cuántas personas contrajeron el virus. “La cuarentena se levantó demasiado temprano porque la gente no se podía quedar en casa y morir de hambre”, dijo Symington.

Antes de la llegada de la pandemia alrededor de 135 millones de personas ya padecían hambre aguda en el mundo, pero los impactos económicos colaterales del virus han duplicado esa cifra. El PMA estima que en 2021, unos 19 mil funcionarios que trabajan en países en desarrollo tendrán que duplicar esfuerzos para atender al menos a 120 millones de personas, siendo los casos más preocupantes los de Yemen, Sudán del Sur, Nigeria y Burkina Faso.

“Es claro que la paz es lo que Yemen necesita para que podamos abordar la crisis alimentaria”, agregó.

Migrantes en India En India, el país con mayor cantidad de personas con inseguridad alimentaria en razón a su extendida población (1,300 millones de habitantes), la pandemia agudizó especialmente la situación de los inmigrantes internos.

“Durante muchos años el PMA estaba en línea con el objetivo de hambre cero de la ONU para 2030, pero está bastante claro ahora que eso no sucederá”, dijo Taravella. “COVID está empobreciendo a los más pobres del mundo y dejando en situación de más hambre a los más hambrientos del mundo”.

El PMA ganó el año pasado el Premio Nobel de Paz por su trabajo para erradicar el hambre en zonas donde los desastres naturales y los conflictos han provocado una interrupción de los canales normales de distribución de alimentos. Zonas donde las carreteras bombardeadas impiden pasar a los camiones que transportan harina, arroz, lentejas, guisantes, aceite de cocina y sal. Zonas donde los ataques aéreos destruyen los aviones que llevan provisiones dietarías. Zonas donde los incesantes combates impiden que las personas hambrientas puedan aventurarse a buscar comida o que los trabajadores humanitarios se muevan con seguridad para proporcionarla, en momentos en que la tierra no puede ser cultivada.

“Ha habido actos terroristas contra aldeanos y trabajadores humanitarios por parte de Al-Qaeda AlShabaab, Boko Haram e ISIS”, añadió Taravella. Recientemente un miembro del PMA fue asesinado en la República Democrática del Congo mientras acompañaba al embajador italiano en una visita a un sitio de alimentación escolar.

Photo Credit: Tijana Drndarski / Unsplash Huracanes devastadores “Cuando llegó la COVID, esperábamos que la temporada de huracanes fuera tranquila como la de hace unos años, pero ese no fue el caso”, contó desde Panama Elio Rujano, oficial de comunicaciones para la oficina regional del PMA en Centroamérica y el Caribe.

La temporada 2020 produjo 30 tormentas, de las cuales 13 se convirtieron en huracanes, seis de ellos con alcance devastador. Eta e Iota arrasaron zonas en Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua mientras la tormenta tropical Amanda azotó a El Salvador. Desde 2014 estos países ya venían experimentando períodos prolongados de sequías o lluvias excesivas provocadas por el fenómeno del Niño, ambos causantes de la destrucción de cultivos y del sustento de las familias de agricultores.

El PMA reparte comidas escolares en las aulas, educa en temas de nutrición a mujeres embarazadas y madres primerizas, y apoya a pequeños agricultores para que puedan encontrar mercados para sus productos.

“En el pasado solo nos centrábamos en el corredor seco donde viven los agricultores rurales, pero ahora, debido a la pandemia, el hambre se ha expandido a las áreas urbanas”, dijo Rujano. “El 50% de la mano de obra en América Latina y en Centroamérica es informal, trabaja en la calle, y al no poder salir, dejaron de satisfacer sus necesidades básicas.”.

“Trabajamos muy de cerca con los gobiernos pero nos vemos allí solo como una curita temporal.

Nuestro objetivo es ayudar a desarrollar la capacidad del país para que gestionen los programas”, explicó Taravella.

En la región 2,2 millones de personas padecían de hambre en 2018 y ese número se acerca a casi 8 millones en 2021.

Aunque en Estados Unidos el PMA no opera ningún banco de alimentos, los inmigrantes en el país han contribuido enormemente a aliviar la hambruna en sus naciones de origen después de desastres naturales como el tifón que devastó Filipinas o los huracanes en Centroamérica. Pero COVID también ha impactado las remesas.

Aquí el PMA trabaja en apoyar a las comunidades a ser más resilientes al cambio climático. Les invitan a reemplazar el cultivo de productos frágiles como el frijol y el maíz con la apicultura, ya que la miel se puede almacenar por períodos más largos. También les dan dinero en efectivo para que compren alimentos en tiendas locales y les enseñan sobre nutrición.

Rujano estima que podrían atender a cerca de 2,6 millones este año si reciben donaciones por el orden de los $47 millones para llegar a esa población.

Niños malnutridos en Yemen

Casi 139 millones de personas se movilizan de áreas rurales a las grandes ciudades para desempeñarse en trabajos informales en fábricas o como vendedores ambulantes. El coronavirus los obligó a regresar a sus aldeas, e incluso por las restricciones de transporte, tuvieron que hacerlo a pie enfrentados no solo a largas jornadas sino al hambre misma.

La pandemia también interrumpió la temporada de cosecha de marzo y abril afectando las cadenas de suministro de alimentos.

Aunque la situación en Centroamérica es preocupante, en lugares como Yemen donde el conflicto es el principal impulsor de la crisis del hambre, las cifras son aún más escalofriantes. Desde finales de 2018 este país se ha catalogado como el hogar de la mayor crisis humanitaria del mundo. Seis años de guerra entre los rebeldes hutíes que controlan el norte del país y el gobierno reconocido a nivel nacional con dominio en el sur, han devastado la infraestructura, destruido tierras agrícolas, erosionado los servicios gubernamentales y dejado al sistema de salud de rodillas.

“Aunque las restricciones (por la pandemia) se han eliminado y estas personas han regresado a las ciudades, hay muy pocos trabajos por la desaceleración económica”, dijo desde New Delhi Parul Sachdeva, asesora en India para Give2Asia, una ong que apoya a organizaciones locales en 23 países de Asia Pacífico.

Cerca de 4 millones de personas de una población de 30, se han convertido en refugiados internos mientras los precios de los alimentos son en promedio 140 veces más altos que antes de la guerra.

El gobierno aprobó un paquete de US$22,6 mil millones para la distribución de alimentos básicos por cuatro meses y transferencias de efectivo de $500 rupias (US$7) hasta por tres meses. Pero los trabajadores informales fueron dejados fuera del paquete lo que obligó a organizaciones de la sociedad civil a apoyar a quienes regresaban a sus aldeas con comidas, suministros de salud y refugio.

“La situación del hambre en este momento en Yemen ha alcanzado un nuevo pico”, dijo desde Londres Annabel Symington, jefe de comunicaciones del PMA en Yemen. “El pronóstico para 2021 es que 50.000 personas ya viven en condiciones de hambruna, otros 5 millones están en un riesgo severo de caer en una hambruna y alrededor de 11 millones de personas se enfrentan a niveles críticos de inseguridad alimentaria”, agregó.

“Hoy 8 de cada 10 personas comen menos alimentos que antes de la pandemia y casi 1 de cada 3 personas se enfrenta a una inseguridad alimentaria moderada o grave”.

Organizaciones como Akshaya Patra distribuyeron 1.8 millones de raciones de comida diarias para niños en toda India. Give2Asia ahora trabaja en la rehabilitación económica a través de la capacitación y la entrega de insumos para la agricultura.

La hambruna ocurre cuando la desnutrición está tan extendida que las personas literalmente mueren de hambre por falta de acceso a la comida regular nutritiva.

“Este es el tipo de actividades que deseamos promover”, agregó Sachdeva. “Creo que proporcionan alguna solución para la regeneración de los medios de vida en un país como el nuestro”, concluyó.

Fue el padre de Jesucristo y se cree que él junto a Santa María, guiaron con fe y muchas virtudes al Redentor durante su niñez. Su fecha de celebración es el día 19 de marzo, aún sí, se le celebra su favor y patrocinio durante todo el mes. Son muy aclamadas las romerías, las novenas y las procesiones en su honor. Se le considera un santo, un espíritu de luz que ayuda en momentos difíciles, en momentos de pesar y de necesidad.

Existen un sinfín de ciudades y poblados alrededor del mundo que llevan su nombre, entre las más reconocidas se encuentran San José, Costa Rica. San José California. San José del Palmar, Colombia. Y San José del Monte en Filipinas. Debió haber una infinita pureza en su corazón para que Dios le eligiera como esposo de La Virgen y padre de Jesús. San José fue, es y será un ser iluminado, uno de los selectos escogidos hijos del Señor.

La información existente sobre la vida de San José no es abundante. Se sabe que fue el esposo de la Virgen María y padre de Jesús. Se le conoció por ser un hombre ejemplar, era carpintero de profesión y descendiente directo de la casa del Rey David. San José murió varios años antes de la fecha de pasión y crucifixión del Redentor, por ello fue que Jesús le encomendó a San Juan, que cuidara de su madre, cuando el ya no estuviera vivo.
