A COLOR OF LAW: A FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF HOW OUR GOVERNMENT SEGREGATED AMERICA

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Persons of color need to know about RESTRICTRIVE COVENANTS which may still exist on the deeds of real estate property. My personal experienced with real estate restrictive covenants happened during 1960, when I was purchasing my Palo Alto, CA home.

Many deeds may still have these restrictive covenants now deemed unconstitutional. My family has lived in Palo Alto since 1959; our three children attended and graduated from schools in Palo Alto Unified School District whose annual budget per student was $12,500 (in contrast to $6,500 per student per year elsewhere).

A child's public-school education is influenced by family's income, society and its economy. Not enough 'low income families' understand the complex matrix of issues such as racism, bias, bigotry, prejudice and xenophobia which all influence pre-k-12 education.

Ideally, education prepares a developing child's mind with the basics: reading, writing and math skills plus a system of evidencebased logic, persistence, motivation and curiosity to keep on learning for life from one's experiences.

Vicarious learning from the experiences of others is very important requiring relationship awareness and communication skills, a stable temperament and ability to adapt changes.

This book was the basis for an article entitled “The Segregation That Shaped Richmond” by Otis R. Taylor, San Francisco Chronicle, published January 19, 2018, page D1. Both present segregation's legacy.

This book argues that residential segregation was unconstitutional, a violation of the 13th Amendment. A year after the amendment abolished slavery in 1865... the Civil Rights Act of 1866 which declared equal protection for U.S. citizens of every race and color to “inherit, purchase, lease, sell, hold, and convey real and personal property, and to full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings for the security of person and property, as is enjoyed by white citizens.”

“Angela Cox, a 32-year employee of Richmond Public Library, was disquieted by government policies that established racist inequalities through housing developments in Richmond, (CA), the (San Francisco) Bay Area and nationally (during WW II, 1941-45, when the Richmond shipyards required additional workers to sustain the production of one Liberty cargo ship per day.”

“Richmond was a white community (24,000 residents) which suddenly had to provide housing for people of color (African Americans) who became 10% of the local population very suddenly.

Public housing projects built were financed by Federal Housing Authority (FHA).”

“Rothstein's research began as an education policy project (which revealed) how social and economic disadvantages are compounded (by segregation). So, if you are concerned about education policy, then do something about neighborhood segregation. I know it looks like a housing book.

Public housing segregation has been documented before, as have been the discriminatory policies of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). What this “Color of Law” (book) does is connect the flagrant, systematic racism to the inequality that persists in neighborhoods and schools today.”

Instead... racial segregative policies promulgated the disenfranchisement of Blacks (People of color).”

Cox said, “I did not fully comprehend the breadth and the architecture behind it until I read this book.

Because...I thought the whole discrimination and restrictive covenants were designed by real estate companies. Yes, real estate agents (who) panicked white homeowners with tales of neighborhoods being invaded (by 'blockbusting Blacks'), and police looked the other way when Black homeowners and renters were terrorized by their white neighbors.”

Rothstein writes, “But racial segregation was and remains a (social and) economic issue (today). We have created a caste system in this country with African Americans kept exploited and geographically separate by racially explicit government policies. Although most of these policies are now off the books, (their restrictive covenants) have never been remedied and their effect endures.”

“During WW II, (Richmond, CA) was this nation's shipbuilding hub. It was 'all hands-on deck', which

is why from 1940 to 1945 Richmond's population grew from 24,000 to about 100,000. Its Black population rose from a few hundred to over 10,000... a shock to the mostly white city.”

“All these new workers needed homes. The federal government's solution was to build segregated public housing. Blacks and whites could work together to defend this country, but they would not live together. What's more, the shabby housing constructed for Blacks was near railroad tracks and close to the shipyards while the sturdier homes for whites were built closer to white residential areas.”

“The dense (public) housing for Blacks did not have resources like parks and community centers while projects for whites tended to be single family homes with amenities and maintenance services.”

“And Rollingwood, a suburb of Richmond, CA., was built to meet the demand for housing, but to finance its construction the federal government required that none of the 700 houses be sold to Blacks. The government also required each home to have an extra bedroom with a separate entrance for a white worker.”

“By 1950, more than threefourths (75%) of Richmond's Black residents lived in public war housing projects. “I think most Black people knew that there was discrimination, but did not know to what degree it happened," said Cox, a 30-year resident of Richmond. “Sometimes the discrimination is still there; it just looks different.” The effects of Richmond's racial segregation are still being felt almost 80 years later. Just look at their schools.”

The West Contra Costa Unified School District (has) schools in Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo, Pinole, and Hercules; serves 33,000

students, 70% of which are Latino and/or Black.

(An education non-profit) 'Go Public Schools West Contra Costa's 2017 report found that by Kindergarten and first grade Black and Latino students have an achievement gap when compared with students of other ethnic backgrounds.

For example: Only 28% of Black First Grade students read at or above the District's benchmark reading level.

A chapter in THE COLOR OF THE LAW states “TO IMPROVE EDUCATION PEOPLE MUST UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE FIXING.” The first thing to do is an information campaign targeting the community to acquaint people with the history so that they understand that it's not a de facto system, but an unconstitutional system that requires a remedy.”

Rothstein says, “Once (the stakeholders) understand that, we can begin to talk seriously about solutions.”

There are (persons) who do not want to be educated (or informed). Individuals such as our President has emboldened neo-Nazis, (KKK) and white supremacists with his racist rhetoric. There are (persons) like our President, who refuse to acknowledge the truth about America.

These are the people who would rather believe kneeling NFL players are disrespectful of the American flag; not protesting police brutality; and the racial inequality outlined in 'THE COLOR OF LAW'.

The truth hurts. But, we are going to keep talking (factually) about it. (Today) there is an openness to talking about our racial history.

Rothstein says, 'There is a general receptivity today and an interest in talking about these issues that has not ever existed before.

Also, check to see that children are provided with meals and snacks to ensure access to good nutrition—early childhood options that may pay off years down the road.

Child Trends CHICAGO, Ill. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — Early childhood care and education in the United States can be expensive. The average cost of care alone ranges from $9,000 a year to a high of more than $23,000. A new study suggests that some high-quality programs are making a difference and yielding a big payoff.

Professor Heckman said that there is a two-generation impact from high-quality childhood education. Mothers are able to continue their education and enter the workforce due to the availability of child care.

Every year, millions of kids are enrolled in programs that parents hope will build the foundation for school success.

One parent told Ivanhoe that “Pre-K time is really important and more emphasis needs to be put on that.”

Another parent said, “I wanted him to be learning his ABC’s but also in a fun way.”

But does the cost of early education pay off over a lifetime?

“What we do in this program—what we do that is different—is follow long-term outcomes,” detailed Nobel Prize-winning economist James Heckman, PhD of the University of Chicago.

from two government-funded early childhood programs that served disadvantaged kids from birth to age five. One of these programs, ABC/ Care, offered cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development. Heckman said that, for every dollar spent on this program, there was a return of more than six dollars.

Heckman explained, “What we are getting is the structure of returns—when we include the

Even if the original business is committed to protecting your privacy, their vendors may not be. After figuring out which entities your data is shared with, determine the security practices of those businesses as well.

4. Is the business PCI compliant? The PCI Security Standards aim to protect financial

5. What will be done if your data is stolen?

As of Dec 27, 2017, the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), a BBB Accredited Charity, identified more than 1,300 breaches that exposed over 174 million records. The number of records exposed increased by around 380% from 2016: ITRC’s 2016 Data Breach Report included more than 1,000 breaches that exposed more than 36 million records. Every business should have a plan to prevent data breaches. Additionally, the business should have a plan detailing what they will do if a data breach does occur. What measures do they have in place to detect a breach? If a breach is detected, what’s their communication plan for notifying customers? Will they attempt to investigate the breach and mitigate the damage? If you’re concerned that your personal information has been compromised by a data breach, you can find tips and suggestions at bbb.org/ breach.

SEATTLE – With the constant f low of political news in daily life, civics education is as important as it has ever been for young people. In Washington state, groups and politicians are pushing for more of it - in and out of the classroom.

The Council on Public Legal Education is holding the Civic Learning Summit in Seattle today to promote quality education of the workings of government for students in the Evergreen State.

Erica Mullen is the YMCA of Greater Seattle's executive for education initiatives. At her Y, kids get to put their school lessons on the government to practical use, and she says that makes them feel more engaged in their communities and the democracy at large.

"Young people find that they like to have a voice because they understand the process and understand that they get to have a voice in our system," she says. "So, whatever it is that is the topic that is most interesting or passionate for them, they learn how they could have an inf luence on it."

The Civic Learning Initiative also is addressing gaps for different populations in civic education. Gaither says his program reaches out to under-represented groups to make sure it ref lects the diversity in Washington state.

"It's interesting because our programs often are more diverse and more ref lective of the actual state of Washington than the institutions that we are simulating," he adds. "So, the legal profession and state government are not as diverse, sometimes, as our programs."

#UNDOCUFEST

Meet the nonprofit which raises funds for undocumented law students

The education branches include a mentorship program, a facet where the group makes presentations at various universities and community organizations requesting information for students aiming to apply for law or graduate school. Within the policy branch the focus is on creative changes in the legislative field. Valencia adds that the purpose is figuring, “how to bring about conversations that need to happen in regard to undocumented students on the graduate level, and then navigating financial aid at both public and private institutions.”

In building up the organization and its partnerships, many events have taken place to fundraise and work with the undocumented communities in San Francisco. These events have included a silent art auction, an opera night where an opera singer donated their time and talents, and various panels discussing aspects of the far-reaching issue of immigration and the undocumented in this country.

A lawyer can take many shapes and forms.

They can be part of trials that change state and federal policy or grant someone freedom from jail time. They can protect corporate lobbying or help keep undocumented families from being split up.

One group of law students are taking on the hotbutton issue of undocumented peoples’ rights to heart by fundraising for their education and learning about community along the way.

Monica Valencia is the Founder & Co-Director of Dreamer Fund. The nonprofit she helped create began because of one undocumented students need, and the resolution Valencia and others were able to find through fundraising.

The original goal of Dreamer Fund began with raising tuition funds to help undocumented law students finish their studies. Now it has brought on other directives to help not only law students but the undocumented community at large.

Beginnings Valencia herself is a first generation MexicanAmerican who grew up in Los Angeles. Her background includes joining the Air Force and attending USC when she returned. After USC she went on to do her graduate studies at the University of San Francisco’s School of Law. “While I was in law school there was a time when I was president of La Raza Law Students Association, so I was very active, putting on different events for our Latinx community.”

It was during this time that Valencia came upon a situation which would mark the beginnings of what would become the Dreamer Fund. A student by the name of Gabriel Garcia, who would eventually become the co-founder of the organization, was having issues with her tuition due to her legal status.

“She identified herself as undocumented, and she confided in me. She was receiving

messages from the school [and] was going to be withdrawn, for non-payment. And I just kind of jumped into action and mobilized.”

After conferring with professors and other students about what could be done to help Garcia, Valencia and her new cohort began a crowdfunding effort to create an emergency fund for tuition purposes.

“I recruited other law students to help me and to figure out ways to not only help Gabby, but other students in her situation,” says Valencia.

Purpose Evolved And so, in 2016 the Dreamer Fund began.

Valencia says that the efforts of the organization were very much so dedicated to helping fellow law students who faced not only the regiments of studying to be lawyers, but also facing the added hurdles of having undocumented status.

Valencia adds that the cohort that began were all in lawyer studies and had the collective mindset to help immigrant communities off the bat.

“We focus on law students who have the same mission or were interested in [similar] fields of law, which is in immigration. At the time we were all part of the immigration clinic at our law school, and so we all had similar interests in immigration law.”

At that point the idea of helping the community beyond the walls of law school was not farfetched. It took some time to get momentum for the organization to begin helping those outside of their school, but Valencia says the Dreamer Fund eventually looked out into the community for volunteers and alliances in order to expand their approach.

“Now it’s just not law students and lawyers, it’s also other people in different professions. We recruited in the community,” Says Valencia.

In the time since they began, the Dreamer Fund has managed to create a viable structure and organization. Valencia says they have developed additional branches beyond the fundraising which deal with policy and education.

“We build that community collective engagement by reaching out to other organizations and seeing how we can collaborate. That’s very important because we’re all in this fight together,” says Valencia.

“It also brings awareness to the fact that a lot of students didn’t even know that we had undocumented students among us or what kind of struggles they go through. They’re just so unaware and I think these conversations are important to have.” #UndocuFest The Dreamer Fund’s latest endeavor is one that Valencia and her team hope leaves a lasting impression. Planned as a hybrid music, art, and community information festival, the approach is to converge the elements of education, art and entertainment, essentially combining the types of events they’ve put on in the past, but on a larger scale and for a larger audience. The goal, as always with the Dreamer Fund, is to raise awareness and funds for law students and the immigrant community.

Valencia adds, “This is going to be our inaugural event… and so we’re hoping to create a safe space in which we can honor and celebrate the resilience of the undocumented and immigrant community. I say that because I feel like our communities are so invested in fighting for their rights, and fighting for their own voice and the struggle for DACA that we often don’t have the time or forget to celebrate one another.” #UndocuFest will have local artists, musicians and poets alongside organizations that will be providing information to anyone that comes into the space. The event will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at El Rio in the Mission District of San Francisco, from 2pm to 8pm.

Valencia is quick to show appreciation for just how this event has come together and those that have brought their talents and volunteer hours to make it happen.

since August of last year and it wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work that each individual is putting in. Also, to see so much of the community come together and be so honored to donate their time, whether they’re playing an instrument or singing or donating their artwork, I think it’s incredible and it speaks to the power that we have as a collective community. It also speaks to the love and support that we have for undocumented immigrants. I think right now we need that because of the political climate that we’re in.”

For #UndocuFest Valencia emphasizes that although the main draw will be focused on immigrants and undocumented people in the community for this day of celebration and fundraising, it’s also going to be important for allies and neighbors in the community to attend, even if they don’t have direct ties to immigrants or undocumented people.

“This event is for everyone that has a supportive mindset, and who is willing and able to support what we’re doing as a movement but also to support the community and everything that they go through. And those communities are the immigrants and undocumented communities.”

Funding and Learning In closing, it is evident that all these steps that Valencia has taken and built up since that momentous interaction with Gabriela Garcia in 2016 has dealt a valuable and rewarding experience that continues on.

“We all went into this project not knowing what to do even though most of us are law students (Valencia graduated just this year) it’s definitely taught me that even if you don’t know how to start a nonprofit the fact that we’re so passionate and we care so much about one student, that led us to care about an entire population of students. It's powerful and I think its taught us to take the plunge even if you might not know what you’re doing,” says Valencia.

When looking back at the progress, one of the most profound lessons since beginning this project, according to Valencia, is the aid that is available within the community. “There’s always a way to find out and get the help from your mentors, professors, colleagues and fellow classmates, to do something good. I think when you care about something or someone or an issue, or even if you just see some type of injustice, there’s always a way to help, even if you don’t think that you have the power to do it.”

“There’s always a way to figure it out. I think that’s what this whole process has taught us.

We literally are learning as we go, and the fact that we all have each other’s back and we are such a tight team, we’re like a family, and we’ll figure things out. I think that’s what makes the Dreamer Fund such a unique group.”

HELENA, Mont. – People have access to an abundance of what the doctor ordered to promote a more positive body image – the outdoors.

A new series of studies has found exposure to nature makes people feel better about their bodies.

In the first study, researchers found that simply looking at images of nature, as opposed to urban landscapes, made people more satisfied with their physical appearance.

Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California could reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 - that's the prediction by a panel of cleanenergy experts gathering in Sacramento today. The panel is part of the "Right to Zero" campaign by the environmental legal nonprofit Earthjustice.

Staff attorney Paul Cort says rapid progress is being made both in technology and in public policy.

"It's not science fiction," he says. "It's happening now. We have transit agencies up and down the state who are committing to convert to zero-emissions buses. We have the ports of L.A. and Long Beach committing to convert all of their port equipment and trucks with zeroemissions technology."

The campaign is also supporting a bill that would commit the state to achieving clean

energy generation by 2045, and a bill that bans the sale of fossil fuel-burning vehicles. They also are fighting three natural gas-fired power plants proposed for the Golden State, because natural gas, although cleaner than coal, is still a polluting fossil fuel and puts residents at risk with methane leaks.

Cort says the idea that California could move away from the combustion engine altogether, fight climate change and clear up our skies is right around the corner.

"When I say zero-emission future, I mean a future where our transportation is run off of zero-emission technology," he explains. "So, think batteries, fuel cells.

And the energy is coming from zeroemission sources: wind, solar and other renewable types of electricity."

Towns that are home to seaports, power plants and transportation hubs suffer some of the worst air pollution in the state - and are now reporting a surge of interest in zero-emission technology.

In the next study, participants either took a mile-and-a-half hike through a woodland park or walked through a city. The hikers felt better about their bodies, while those who walked through the city actually felt worse.

Viren Swami, the psychologist who led the studies, has some ideas on why the hikers felt better.

"They might come to appreciate the fact that they are part of a much wider ecological system that requires care and nurturing,” he states. “And maybe people who spend time in green spaces might come to think of their

bodies as requiring care, requiring respect, requiring nurturance, rather than constantly thinking about what it should look like."

Swami says people in cities are constantly bombarded with images of what they should look like. In contrast, in nature people get a relief from this bombardment and perhaps focus more on what their bodies can do rather than what they look like.

Negative body perception is widespread in the United States. Swami says about 60 percent of women and 50 percent of men suffer from some form of negative body image.

But Swami adds that nature has other benefits besides strengthening our image of ourselves.

"Even if you don't really care about body image very much, there is a ton of evidence suggesting that access to green space and spending time in nature is good for your mental health in general,” he points out.

“So, even if you think you have positive body image, spending time in green space is good because it probably will help your mental health."

Studies have shown being in nature has a range of benefits, from helping with depression to increasing creativity.

I married Respondent (Carlos) on June 23, 1986. We separated on or about midJune 2007. There were no children of the marriage.

I am submitting the is request for order to ask the court to exercise its jurisdiction over the single family dwelling known as 536 North Santa Ana Street, Los Banos, 95365.

(Los Banos) and adjudicate the parties respective interest in Los Banos as a missed asset under Family Code § 2556.

Both Carlos and I were born in Mexico. To make ends meet we both worked and tried to be careful with money. But despite our efforts at the time of separation we were in debt to the IRS for about $4,000 in addition to about $3,000 in consumer debt. Other than odd pieces of furniture and an old car there were NO community assets.

Carlos was convicted of child molestation in 2006 and spent about six months at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas.

Upon his release, Carlos deported back to Mexico.

In our culture child molestation is the most detested of behaviors, so it is no surprise that I have had NO contact from Carlos since he was deported 10 years ago. I would not be surprised if he left Mexico and/or changed his name,

as his association with child molestation puts not only himself but his family members at some risk.

In 2011, I purchased Los Banos. As I was still legally married my status was noted on the title. To purchase No. Santa Ana I needed a $10,000 down payment. I had accumulated $3,000 in savings over the prior 5 years and a cousin lent/gave me the $7,000 balance.

I initially filed for dissolution on March 3, 2011. I was then unaware of service by publication and attempted to locate Carlos in order to serve him. I contacted the Mexican immigration authorities to see if they could provide some assistance. That proved most unproductive. I became discouraged.

When I tried to restart the matter in 2012. I was informed I had waited too long and would have to refile. I did so March 23, 2012.

I then employed a paralegal service to help me.

I informed the service I owned Los Banos, but was told since Carlos and I were separated when I purchased it, I didn’t have to and didn’t reference the property on any of the documents. The Judgment of Dissolution was entered on June 7, 2013. It stated there were no assets.

I am now interested in selling Los Banos, but I am informed the buyer will not be able to obtain title insurance so the property is essentially unsaleable until title issues are addressed.

I respectfully request the court exercise its jurisdiction over 536 North Santa Ana Street, Los Banos as a missed asset pursuant to Family Code §2556 and adjudicate the nature and extent of our respective interests in said property.

Desde muy niño se observó su vocación hacia el sacerdocio. Su hermana María siempre le apoyó y gracias a ella se animó a ingresar al Seminario Auxiliar de San Juan de los Lagos. Ya en el seminario y siendo un adolescente comenzó su gran obra: auxiliaba a los enfermos, procuraba alimentos a los más necesitados, era compasivo con los animales y brindaba protección a los huérfanos, inmigrantes y desamparados.

A los 21 años de edad ingresó al Seminario de Guadalajara. En 1927 siendo ya sacerdote, fue trasladado a la Parroquia de Tequila, en esos años había estallado la guerra de los cristeros, las autoridades civiles y militares perseguían con severidad

En 1928 tuvo que esconderse pues su vida corría peligro, le buscaban para asesinarlo, una noche sus verdugos dieron con su escondite y le acribillaron. Estuvo agonizante por varios minutos y antes de morir les confesó a sus hermanos que había ofrecido su vida a cambio de un cese de hostilidades contra los sacerdotes y la fe católica. Santo Toribio murió como mártir de la fe cristiana el 25 de febrero de 1928. En el año 1948 sus restos fueron trasladados del panteón municipal de Tequila a la capilla construida por él mismo, en Jalostotitlán. Fue canonizado el 21 de mayo del año 2000.

FACEBOOK: THE MINISTRY OF TRUTH?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently wrote, “Today I’m sharing our second major update this year: to make sure the news you see, while less overall, is high quality.

I’ve asked our product teams to make sure we prioritize news that is trustworthy, informative, and local. And we’re starting next week with trusted sources.”

In the same post he goes on to say, “There’s too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today. Social media enables people to spread information faster than ever before, and if we don’t specifically tackle these problems, then we end up amplifying them. That’s why it’s important that News Feed promotes high quality news that helps build a sense of common ground.”

The Post-Truth Era State-controlled media has never been a purveyor of objective truth. And, as we know from the era of yellow journalism, a First Amendment–empowered free press owned by super-wealthy gatekeepers isn’t much better. In our slightly more civilized past, with fewer media outlets, it was much easier to identify objective truth from opinion or commentary. That said, in our modern, significantly less civil society, where the sense of right and wrong has been replaced by the narcissistic necessity to declare winners and losers, we have crossed the Rubicon into the era of post-truth.

Today, regardless of veracity, the most compelling narrative wins. Unfortunately, as it did in 49 BC, the crossing of this metaphoric Rubicon may lead to many modern-day lifetime dictatorships – and the tribal warfare that always follows.

Zuckerberg continues: “The hard question we’ve struggled with is how to decide what news sources are broadly trusted in a world with so much division. We could try to

make that decision ourselves, but that’s not something we’re comfortable with. We considered asking outside experts, which would take the decision out of our hands but would likely not solve the objectivity problem. Or we could ask you — the community — and have your feedback determine the ranking.”

Ask the Community?

I understand the symbolism of “asking the community” what it believes are trusted news sources. But … seriously? Isn’t that what a “like” is for? Facebook knows exactly what you trust, what you think, whom you know, what they think, whom they know, whom everyone trusts, and what to put in front of you to turn your engagement into value for Facebook’s shareholders. So let’s not get too excited about a survey.

Intersubjectivity Can we agree on things that are objectively true? Consider the following statement: “If you are standing on the earth holding an object at shoulder height and you let go of the object, it will fall toward the center of the earth.” That statement is objectively true, isn’t it? Is it? What if the object was a Chinese floating lantern? In that case, the object would rise before it fell. The statement, then, isn’t objectively true; it is subjectively true.

The world is full of subjective truth, and this is where we hit an objective problem.

Is a statement news or fake news, fact or alternative fact, truth or truthiness, reality or wikiality?

Wikiality “The great wall of China is the only manmade object you can see from space.”

“The Eskimos have 27 words for snow.”

Both of these statements are patently false, but you hear them, and statements like them, all the time. Who is to say what is true? Anything with enough likes becomes

a wikiality (Stephen Colbert’s awesome word for something that is accepted as true because lots of people believe it to be true).

Wikiality is Facebook’s answer to fake news, alternative facts, and truthiness. Facebook, the social media giant, is going to let you rank the news you think is most valuable.

What could possibly go wrong?

As I described it in my article “Your Comfort Zone May Destroy The World”: “Put a comfortable lie in an echo chamber, and nobody will challenge it. It will reverberate until it is accepted as actually true. Then, the willfully ignorant will shout it as loudly as they can. It may be their truth, but that does not make it true.”

The only thing worse than uninformed, subjective opinion passed off as factbased journalism is letting uninformed consumers of this information decide if it is true or false.

A Slightly Less Awful Solution There is an obvious solution to Facebook’s problem, and it is only slightly less awful than the solution they have chosen: State a set of values, and exert editorial control over the content. Then Facebook would become the trusted source. Not a trusted source of objective truth, but a trusted, branded distributor of content that conforms to a set of stated values. The Disney brand promises family-friendly content. The Nike brand promises excellence in athletic wear.

BMW promises exceptional automotive performance. What does the Facebook brand promise? Right now, it promises subjective truth and opinion shrouded in truthiness and wikiality. As the new Ministry of Truth, Facebook could promise so much more.

El Camino a la Recuperación Gracias al sacrificio y al heroísmo de los equipos de primera respuesta, los incendios del Norte de California ya fueron apagados.
