LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT As we begin a new academic year, the media is saturated with articles asking, “Is college worth it?”. When I searched the question on Google, there were 800,000 citations! Higher education in the United States has always been considered a cornerstone of American democracy, a key driver of economic growth, and as a pathway to the middle class. Public concern about the increasing price of college and the economic return on a college degree is at an all-time high.

At Hilbert, we are making every effort to keep a college education affordable for our students. We have carefully evaluated our expenditures and our tuition increases have averaged only 2-3% annually while providing over $3.8 million in scholarship aid each year to Hilbert students. The introduction of financial literacy modules into our undergraduate curriculum is assisting our students in making good financial decisions that will minimize their student debt. In our summer edition of the Hilbert College Magazine, you can read about the addition of a new track in our MPA graduate program in Health Services Administration as well as in our Adult Degree Program (ADP). We were able to secure a generous planning grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation to support the curriculum development and initial implementation for these efforts - again keeping our direct expenses at a minimal level while growing enrollment. We are also grateful for the tremendous support of the Board of Trustees, Hilbert alumni, and special friends who participate in the annual golf outing which this year raised over $90,000 in student scholarship support. Most importantly, we are preparing students for careers that are aligned for the workplace needs of the 21st century so that their college degrees are worth it. What a thrill to hear our May graduates share the exciting opportunities they were embarking on as they continued their life journey. Our mission to deliver a high quality Catholic Franciscan education that is preparing students to become informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities remains our laser-like focus. At the same time, we are making every effort to conduct our operations efficiently while creating greater stability, consistency, and predictability to tuition setting and budget planning.

We are also excited to announce our new Hilbert Reads program, which encourages a campus-wide focus on one book. This fall, the faculty and staff have selected Conor Grennan’s book, Little Princes. What an amazing, unexpected experience Conor had as he set out on his journey around the world which led him to Nepal and a life-changing encounter. I would urge your consideration of joining us for an opportunity to meet him personally on October 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Swan Auditorium. I hope to welcome you back to campus for this wonderful program. Thank you for your ongoing support of Hilbert College. It truly makes it possible to serve our students in meaningful ways.

HILBERT ENGAGEMENT
HILBERT’S LEGACY
Hilbert College embraces its mission to be a place where “students from diverse backgrounds are educated in liberal arts and professional programs to become informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities.” At the heart of this is an exciting vision of the complete student experience, inside and outside the classroom.
Trusting in God, Colette Hilbert, a remarkable and saintly woman, left her homeland and family at the age of 23 to respond to the needs of Polish immigrants in America.
Students achieve greater success and retain knowledge longer when they are actively engaged in their learning. This means participating in a dynamic classroom, where concepts are applied, preconceived notions are challenged, and handson experiences reinforce content presented by a highly qualified faculty. It also means providing students with many opportunities to feel connected to the college outside the classroom through clubs, athletic teams, diverse programming including study abroad, and effective advisement and counseling. Hilbert has structured its programs to allow students to start successfully and build on that beginning through an integrated series of classes and opportunities that result in broad preparation for a fruitful career and meaningful future. In their first year, all students take the Foundations Seminar to acquaint them with the college and provide them the tools they will need as they progress. As sophomores, they are expected to enroll in at least one course that includes a service learning component which provides both experiential learning in the course material and promotes engaged citizenship. The cornerstone of the third year is Hilbert’s nationally-recognized “Junior Symposium.” Centered on global current events, the course acquaints students with the world they will live and work in and allows them to engage in respectful dialogue with people who may hold very different opinions and worldviews. Finally, each degree program features a senior capstone experience appropriate for their discipline. Through an internship, major research project, or an intensive symposium, students get the chance to integrate and reflect on their entire academic career and showcase their preparation to begin their career or further integration. With the addition of professional Master’s programs, accelerated degree-completion opportunities, and updated curricula, Hilbert College has taken the next steps in its development as an institution providing high quality, relevant education built on a strong foundation of Franciscan values.
In 1897 she founded the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph and extended her influence in the ministry of education in elementary and secondary schools for generations. It was in 1957 that the Franciscan Sisters founded Hilbert College where Mother Colette’s strong faith, concern for others and respect for the unique value of each person, still reflect her guiding principle “in all things love.”
A CATHOLIC, FRANCISCAN COLLEGE Franciscanism dates back to the 12th century in the tiny Italian village of Assisi from the work of one man: St Francis of Assisi. He was more than a saint - he was a prisoner and soldier who possessed a magnanimity of spirit. The son of a wealthy merchant, Francis’ prosperous, rebellious life changed one day with a chance meeting of a leper. Rather than shun this social outcast, as he and so many others had done in the past, Francis embraced him. The gesture led Francis to a life of service to God. Soon after his conversation, Francis was praying before the crucifix at San Damiano when he heard Christ speak: “Francis, go and repair my house.” A man of action, Francis began repairing chapels, financing his work by selling family possessions. Disowned by his father and jeered by the masses, Francis remained focused on his mission. He soon realized that God was speaking not of physical buildings, but the spiritual Church and souls of people. Francis’ belief in preaching by living the gospel message attracted devoted followers whose lives were changed, eventually leading to the founding of the Franciscan Order. Although Francis lived only to the age of 44, his message of a life of simplicity and the power of prayer has never faded. Today, St. Francis is a symbol of spiritual love, guidance and hope. His ideals of peace and healing live on at Hilbert.

Hilbert Alumna Commits Million-Dollar Bequest The largest individual alumni commitment in Hilbert’s history Lorraine (Sturdevant) Hritcko (Ritz-koh) ’81 and her husband, Dr. Philip M. Hritcko, of Rocky Hill, Conn., have made a bequest of $1 million to Hilbert College, the largest individual alumni commitment in the college’s history. The gift is designated for the naming of a future Hilbert capital project. “My two years at Hilbert College laid the foundation for continuing my education and ultimately becoming successful in the business world,” Hritcko said. “My contributions to Hilbert are my way of saying ‘thank you’ to the administrators, faculty and staff who nurtured and encouraged me. They served as professional role models for me, and the extensive interaction with them not only enabled me to thrive academically, but gave me confidence and courage to succeed beyond Hilbert.” “This is a very significant day for Hilbert College,” said Cynthia Zane, Ed.D., President of Hilbert College. “Lorraine and Philip have been increasingly generous to Hilbert over the years, but this commitment demonstrates their unwavering support and will have a lasting impact for numerous Hilbert students.” Hritcko is a 1981 graduate of Hilbert’s paralegal studies program and she and her husband have been generous supporters of Hilbert and recently donated $25,000 to name a classroom. “She came to us as a shy young woman from the Binghamton, NY area. Certainly, she has blossomed beyond expectations. She is one of the most successful Hilbert graduates. She has encountered success, not only throughout the northeast, but internationally as well,” said Sr. Edmunette Paczesny, FSSJ, President Emerita at Hilbert College. “She has been extremely generous to Hilbert. As her career began to expand, she began to expand her generosity to Hilbert as well. She
has always been gracious to me and we have maintained correspondence. The fact that she remembers Hilbert is a very important thing.” Hritcko is currently Director, Global Software Sales at Conning in Hartford, Conn. Her career journey began after earning her MBA at Binghamton University in 1986 and she was recruited by Aetna in Hartford, CT where she began a three-year executive development program with a focus on human resources. At the conclusion of the program, Hritcko was promoted to the head of human resources for the Corporate Communications Division, which included public relations, speech writing, graphic design, a state-ofthe-art television studio, and a 200-person print shop. She followed that with promotions to human resources for the Investment Division and head of communications for the Investment Division. Hritcko managed communications with external rating agencies and with the Investment Committee of the Board of Directors on Aetna’s investment performance during the financial crisis of the late 1980s early 90s. In 1998, she was promoted to the Y2K Project for Aetna International, which had 26 businesses in 18 countries, where she travelled significantly, logging 800,000 miles in 18 months. In 2000, Hritcko was promoted to the position of Chief of Staff for both the Chairman and CEO/President of Aetna International. After leaving Aetna, she was hired by the Insurance Division of SunGard, where she spent eight years working throughout North America, Europe, South America and Asia. Prior to her start at Conning in March 2011, she spent three years at Towers Watson. Hritcko has some advice for current Hilbert students, “Don’t be afraid to take chances. You aren’t always going to get it right the first time around, but the key to long-term success in both your career and personal life is the ability to continually reinvent yourself.”
The generous support of the following donors has enabled Hilbert to advance its mission and goals. HILBERTCOLLEGEHISTORY
Hilbert College is a private, residential Franciscan college located in the Town of Hamburg, about 10 minutes south of Buffalo, New York. The college is named after Mother Colette Hilbert, foundress of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph, the congregation that established the school in 1957. Hilbert College is a four-year coeducational liberal arts college and currently enrolls approximately 1,100 students. Hilbert College, founded on the principles of the Catholic faith and the Franciscan philosophy of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph (FSSJ), was established under the vision and leadership of Sister Mary Edwina Bogel. Originally affiliated with the Catholic University of America, it was named the Immaculata Teacher Training School, and its first classes were offered to nine FSSJ sisters at the FSSJ Motherhouse in Hamburg. Sister Edwina was named the first president and dean of the college. In 1960, the name of the institution was changed to Immaculata College; in 1969 it was renamed Hilbert College in memory of Mother Colette. Lay women were first admitted to the college in 1964. It became coeducational in 1969.
Fueled by the changes in admission policy, enrollment reached 407 by the fall of 1969, more than double the previous year’s enrollment, and topped 500 a year later. To make room for the new students, ground was broken in 1967 for a new campus adjacent to the Franciscan Sister Motherhouse. In the fall of 1969, the Academic Building and McGrath Library were opened, while the St. Joseph Residence Hall and Campus Center were formally dedicated in May 1970. Sister Edwina retired as president in 1973, and the Academic Building was renamed Bogel Hall in her honor. Sister Edmunette Paczesny was named president in 1974 and would lead the college through more great changes over the next three decades. The biggest transition came in 1992 as Hilbert moved to a four-year bachelor’s degree-granting college. Hilbert also began partnerships with other educational providers, entering into agreements with St. Bonaventure University to offer a master’s degree and certification at the Hamburg campus and one with D’Youville College that offers graduate-level classes to Hilbert seniors.
During her 32 years as president, Sister Edmunette oversaw several major capital improvements. Among the new construction projects: the Hafner Recreation Center (1979), four apartment-style residence buildings (2003), an administration building (Franciscan Hall, in 1997), the 430seat Swan Auditorium (2006) and a new academic building named in her honor, Paczesny Hall (2006). Enrollment continued to rise, though at a much slower rate. The student body topped 1,000 students for the first time in 2003. Sister Edmunette retired from the presidency in 2006. Cynthia Zane, a trained nurse who previously served as the dean of the faculty at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, became Hilbert’s third president and its first lay president later that year. In 2009, Hilbert opened Trinity Hall, the college’s first new residence hall in nearly 40 years. Hilbert added its first graduate programs - in public administration and criminal justice administration - in 2011, and began offering accelerated bachelor’s degree programs in conflict studies & dispute resolution and organizational development for adult learners in 2012.

SENIOR CAPSTONE
All incoming freshman are required to participate in the First-Year Experience and the Foundations Seminar. This is designed to get all students acquainted with the college experience and includes participation in a minimum of four ‘passport’ activities on campus. All first year students will participate in the Hilbert College Reads program. Each student will receive a complimentary copy of the year’s selected text and potentially have an opportunity to meet the author.
Students are obligated to take one course with a service-learning requirement. Service-learning requirements are unique to each class. In some classes, the entire class may work together on one single project that benefits the community and meets a community need. In other courses, students may be provided the opportunity to complete a service-learning activity by selecting an organization or project from a list of pre-approved community partners and activities. These activities are linked to the classroom curriculum and help meet a need in the community.
Three professors from different disciplines teach the mandatory Junior Symposium course which encourages students to follow current events and introduces The New York Times as daily reading. Juniors engage in active debates and student-led discussions, which encourage participants to disagree civilly.
The Hilbert College Blueprint culminates with the Senior Capstone. Unique to each department, the capstone could be – but is not limited to – a project, internship, or research paper. The Senior Capstone is designed to synthesize the student’s four-year educational experience and support the college’s mission to produce ‘informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities.’
