I am proud to present you with this copy of Hilbert College’s 2015 Annual Report.

The report summarizes the highlights from the past year as we have continued to focus our efforts on our core mission of educating students to become informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities.

In our report, we discuss the success our students have achieved after graduating from Hilbert. 94.5% of our May 2014 graduating class were employed (or continuing their education) within six months following the completion of their degrees. 89.8% of those who were employed found jobs in New York State in a variety of sectors including banking, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, law firms, media production, and human services.

Hilbert’s strategic plan is detailed in this report and will give you clear picture of where we are, and where we are heading. For example, we are exploring the development of several new academic programs to enhance our students’ career opportunities post-graduation. In 2015-16, an architectural study will be completed on the Student Center, the only original building on the campus that has not been renovated as we explore how to have this crucial space meet the needs of today’s students.

Most importantly, we recognize in this report the extraordinary generosity of our donors who through their support enabled Hilbert to provide over four million dollars in student scholarships. We remain focused on how to keep a Hilbert education affordable and to minimize the debt that students incur while earning their degrees. As you know from prior reports, 100% of the dollars raised in our annual fund campaign (unless restricted by the donor), as well as the Trustee sponsored golf event each June, are allocated to student scholarships.

Hilbert College embraces its mission to be a place where “students from diverse backgrounds are educated in liberal arts and professional programs to become informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities.”

At the heart of this is an exciting vision of the complete student experience, inside and outside the classroom.

Trusting in God, Colette Hilbert, a remarkable and saintly woman, left her homeland and family at the age of 23 to respond to the needs of Polish immigrants in America.

Students achieve greater success and retain knowledge longer when they are actively engaged in their learning. This means participating in a dynamic classroom, where concepts are applied, preconceived notions are challenged, and handson experiences reinforce content presented by a highly qualified faculty. It also means providing students with many opportunities to feel connected to the college outside the classroom through clubs, athletic teams, diverse programming including study abroad, and effective advisement and counseling.

Hilbert has structured its programs to allow students to start successfully and build on that beginning through an integrated series of classes and opportunities that result in broad preparation for a fruitful career and meaningful future. In their first year, all students take the Foundations Seminar to acquaint them with the college and provide them the tools they will need as they progress. As sophomores, they are expected to enroll in at least one course that includes a service learning component which provides both experiential learning in the course material and promotes engaged citizenship. The cornerstone of the third year is Hilbert’s nationally-recognized “Junior Symposium.” Centered on global current events, the course acquaints students with the world they will live and work in and allows them to engage in respectful dialogue with people who may hold very different opinions and worldviews. Finally, each degree program features a senior capstone experience appropriate for their discipline. Through an internship, major research project, or an intensive symposium, students get the chance to integrate and reflect on their entire academic career and showcase their preparation to begin their career or further integration.

With the addition of professional Master’s programs, evening bachelor’s degree programs, and updated curricula, Hilbert College has taken the next steps in its development as an institution providing high quality, relevant education built on a strong foundation of Franciscan values.

In 1897 she founded the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph and extended her influence in the ministry of education in elementary and secondary schools for generations.

It was in 1957 that the Franciscan Sisters founded what would become Hilbert College where Mother Colette’s strong faith, concern for others and respect for the unique value of each person, still reflect her guiding principle - “in all things charity.”

A CATHOLIC, FRANCISCAN COLLEGE Franciscanism dates back to the 12th century in the tiny Italian village of Assisi from the work of one man: St Francis of Assisi. He was more than a saint - he was a prisoner and soldier who possessed a magnanimity of spirit.

The son of a wealthy merchant, Francis’ prosperous, rebellious life changed one day with a chance meeting of a leper. Rather than shun this social outcast, as he and so many others had done in the past, Francis embraced him. The gesture led Francis to a life of service to God. Soon after his conversation, Francis was praying before the crucifix at San Damiano when he heard Christ speak: “Francis, go and repair my house.”

A man of action, Francis began repairing chapels, financing his work by selling family possessions. Disowned by his father and jeered by the masses, Francis remained focused on his mission. He soon realized that God was speaking not of physical buildings, but the spiritual Church and souls of people.

Francis’ belief in preaching by living the gospel message attracted devoted followers whose lives were changed, eventually leading to the founding of the Franciscan Order.

Although Francis lived only to the age of 44, his message of a life of simplicity and the power of prayer has never faded. Today, St. Francis is a symbol of spiritual love, guidance and hope. His ideals of peace and healing live on at Hilbert.

VISION 2017 Goal 1: Strengthen Revenue Streams: Hilbert College will achieve increased enrollment and fundraising goals in

order to improve fiscal and programmatic health and more effectively achieve its mission.

1.1:

Achieve optimal enrollment in each of three main categories: Traditional undergraduate increase to 1,269, Adult Degree Program to 102, Graduate to 118 by Fall 2017.

1.2:

Increase number of traditional transfer students.

Goal – 165 new transfer students by Fall 2017.

1.3:

Perform a comprehensive review of the college’s financial aid awarding practices and formalize a financial aid literacy program in order to minimize student debt and keep college affordable.

1.4:

Increase external funding resources as follows: develop major giving program; increase alumni giving rate to 12%-20%; 40 documented planned gifts; increasing the number of $1,000 donors to 100; increasing annual fund gifts to $225,000 per year; increasing the endowment to $4.0 million; and increase grant pipeline funding.

Goal 2: Strengthen the Student Experience: Hilbert College will continue its unshakeable focus on student

learning by providing clear pathways to success.

2.1:

Improve retention rates by 5% for all students and specifically within the following populations: academically at-risk students, first-generation students, and students from non-majority populations.

2.2:

Establish and meet benchmarks for learning outcomes for all students at course, program, and institutional levels.

2.3:

Increase percentage of students participating in horizontal programming: study away, on-campus employment, service learning, and community service.

2.4:

Design and implement systems to ensure that students can complete a degree in four years prepared for the world of work and/or graduate education.

2.5:

Realign the current class schedule and academic calendar to more appropriately reflect and support a highly engaged student experience and maximize facility use.

Develop and resource a “teaching and learning” curriculum focused on pedagogies that promote engaged learning, including appropriate use of technology and alternate course delivery options.

HILBERTCOLLEGEHISTORY Hilbert College is a private, residential Franciscan college located in the Town of Hamburg, about 10 minutes south of Buffalo, New York. The college is named after Mother Colette Hilbert, foundress of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph (FSSJ), the congregation that established the school in 1957. Hilbert College is a four-year coeducational liberal arts college and currently enrolls approximately 1,000 students.

Hilbert College, founded on the principles of the Catholic faith and the Franciscan philosophy of the FSSJ, was established under the vision and leadership of Sister Mary Edwina Bogel. Originally affiliated with the Catholic University of America, it was named the Immaculata Teacher Training School, and its first classes were offered to nine FSSJ sisters at the FSSJ Motherhouse in Hamburg.

Sister Edwina was named the first president and dean of the college. In 1960, the name of the institution was changed to Immaculata College; in 1969 it was renamed Hilbert College in memory of Mother Colette.

Lay women were first admitted to the college in 1964. It became

coeducational in 1969.

Fueled by the changes in admission policy, enrollment reached 407 by the fall of 1969, more than double the previous year’s enrollment, and topped 500 a year later. To make room for the new students, ground was broken in 1967 for a new campus adjacent to the Franciscan Sisters Motherhouse. In the fall of 1969, the Academic Building and McGrath Library were opened, while the original Residence Hall and Campus Center were formally dedicated in May 1970.

Sister Edwina retired as president in 1973, and the Academic Building was renamed Bogel Hall in her honor.

Sister Edmunette Paczesny was named president in 1974 and would lead the college through more great changes over the next three decades.

The biggest transition came in 1992 as Hilbert moved to a four-year bachelor’s degree-granting college.

Hilbert also began partnerships with other educational providers, entering into agreements with St. Bonaventure University to offer a master’s degree and certification at the Hamburg campus and one with D’Youville College that offered

graduate-level classes to Hilbert seniors.

During her 32 years as president, Sister Edmunette oversaw several major capital improvements. Among the new construction projects: the Hafner Recreation Center (1979), four apartment-style residence buildings (2003), an administration building (Franciscan Hall, in 1997), the 430seat Swan Auditorium (2006) and a new academic building named in her honor, Paczesny Hall (2006).

Enrollment continued to rise and the student body topped 1,000 students for the first time in 2003.

Sister Edmunette retired from the presidency in 2006. Cynthia Zane, a trained nurse who previously served as the dean of the faculty at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, became Hilbert’s third president and its first lay president later that year.

In 2009, Hilbert opened Trinity Hall, the college’s first new residence hall in nearly 40 years. Hilbert added its first graduate programs - in public administration and criminal justice administration - in 2011, and began offering evening bachelor’s degree programs in conflict studies & dispute resolution and organizational development for adult learners in 2012.

Service Learning Projects Support over 50 Community partners Biology class finds powerful connection with service-learning project helping Kaely’s Kindness “For it is in giving that we receive.”

The simple line from the Prayer of St. Francis encompasses the power that lies in Hilbert College’s Service Learning Program. Class curriculum is paired with service projects to help a community partner, all with the hope of deepening the learning experience and bettering our students.

A powerful example of this experience happened with Dr. Meredith Ezak’s BI 110 ModernTopics in Biology class. The class integrated the service learning component by working with Kaely’s Kindness Foundation, an organization that seeks to help teenage girls diagnosed with cancer.

“My class covers a variety of modern topics in biology, and, in particular, we spend a significant amount of time learning about the biology of cancer,” Ezak said.

“I thought it would be especially meaningful for students to work with a foundation that serves teens close in age to most of them who live in the same community.”

BI 110 is a general education course that will occasionally have students that aren’t looking to pursue a career in science, so Dr. Ezak found service learning especially powerful for engaging students with class subjects.

“I wanted to use the service project to engage them more with the material, give them more appreciation for how what they learn in biology is really woven into their lives every day, and make it more likely that they will retain what they are learning in class,” said Ezak.

When students were working on helping Kaely’s Kindness through a variety of projects like chemo comfort bags and helping at special events, they met with Kaely Kwitek, the namesake of the foundation. She was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), a relatively uncommon type of nonHodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) as a teenager. Now, Kaely

is a student at the University at Buffalo, which made the connection to students especially powerful and motivating.

Dr. Ezak found that service learning had a greater impact than just making the curriculum interesting. She quickly saw how students were going above and beyond the normal 10 hours of service requirement.

Students raised over $1,000 for supplies for the chemo comfort bags and many took the value of service far beyond the class requirement.

Hunter Bielat ‘18, who volunteered to dress up as The Grinch for the

foundation’s annual Christmas party was moved after learning that some of the girls touched by Kaely’s Kindness, and their families were struggling financially. He quickly raised over $1,000 and sponsored an event on his own to take five girls from the foundation Christmas shopping.

He went above and beyond the service requirement and had a fun time doing it. He noted that he wanted to put more into the project than what was required so that he could get the best experience possible.

“If it was not for this class I do not think I would have done something like this,” Bielat said. He is now taking a class with another service

learning component and hopes to continue to volunteer in a number of ways.

While he was transformed personally by the service learning program, he also noticed how it impacted his education.

“It is one thing to take notes and learn about cancer, but when you put real people and real emotions into that work your focus goes from paper to reality,” Bielat said.

“College is all about preparing you for real life and there is no better way than bringing real life into your studies.”

“It was so wonderful to see a student go above and beyond like that,” said Ezak. “In times like that, I know service learning is really making a difference both in my students’ lives and in the lives of those served by the community partner.” Bielat continues to be in contact with the foundation’s President, Maggie Dreyer and hopes to help out again this year at the annual Christmas party.

Dreyer, who is also Kaely’s mom, was moved by the support generated by Dr. Ezak’s class. Noting that Kaely’s Kindness was created due to lack of support resources when Kaely was diagnosed, the work the foundation does has been greatly aided by the service learning partnership.

“I watched firsthand how Kaely dealt with the cancer diagnosis,” Dreyer said. “She was initially refusing treatment and it wasn’t until she met another teen named Emily that I witnessed an acceptance of her cancer and acceptance of the treatment offered.”

What Emily was able to do for Kaely in the form of phone calls, text messages, and hang outs, Maggie and her daughter wanted to do for other girls facing this disease.

Now, with the help of programs like

Hilbert’s service learning, the work of Kaely’s Kindness continues to thrive.

“We were able to further our mission as a result of the volunteers who assisted in marketing, attended and worked our monthly events, raised funds and made chemo bags for all of our girls who were active in treatment,” Dreyer said. “Service learning gave the students an opportunity to witness the strength and resiliency of our Kaely’s Kindness teens.”

Dreyer noted that the experience is mutually beneficial, with student volunteers being able to experience learning on a deeper, more meaningful level, and for those teens with cancer to be given the energy, enthusiasm and hope from those that come to help.

Now Kaely’s Kindness is currently serving 51 teenage girls diagnosed with cancer with referrals coming in from other states. The hope is to expand services on a national level.

Dr. Ezak was impressed by the response to service learning and plans to extend the component into her Nutrition class in the fall of 2016. She, again, will work with Kaely’s Kindness for the spring 2016 semester for her BI 110 class.
