IN THE LATE 90s, TOM AND HIS FAMILY WOULD ATTEND SATURDAY NIGHT RACES AT NEARBY ELKO SPEEDWAY, a high-banked, 3/8-mile paved oval that has been affiliated with NASCAR for the past 26 years. Elko Speedway flies the banner of the weekly Whelen All American Series, which allows competitors to challenge drivers from approximately 60 other tracks throughout the season. One day in 2001, Jonathan gathered his best 15-year-old courage to ask his dad about buying a race car that brother, Pat, and he could share. The resounding answer came quickly, “You guys are nuts. No way!” Surprisingly, just two weeks

later, Tom asked his sons if they wanted to take a look at a low-budget hobby stock that was for sale. The boys jumped at the chance. The green ’85 Chevrolet Impala was acquired and quickly painted blue. What began as a gift quickly became a calling.

A Season Champion Jonathan was slated to drive the first half of the season, with Pat taking the wheel during the second half. Jonathan reported it was like pulling teeth trying to remove him from the car. Pat did try it for one race and decided he would rather be a crewman. Jonathan went on

to capture Elko rookie honors. With some experience under their belts, the Eilen boys completely rebuilt the ’85 Impala over the winter and gave it a new silver and orange look. Jonathan won the 2002 hobby stock championship. The car sits idle today, just the way it left the track on championship night 14 years ago. From there, he moved up to the sportsman division and then to late models. As a forerunner to Jonathan’s recent success, he won the first ever ARCA Midwest Tour race in 2007, which just happened to be at Elko, and then went on to capture rookie honors. During the 2010 season’s third race at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in

Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 11, Jonathan suffered a broken back that sidelined him for the remainder of the year. The team had a rebuilding year during 2011 that did not foretell an incredible run to the ARCA Midwest Tour championship in 2012. The seasons since have had their ups and downs, but Eilen is always considered a threat to win wherever the series has run in recent years, including tracks in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. Jonathan has been a part of the series’ “Touring Stars” program, which recognizes the top drivers committed to racing each year’s entire schedule. Just for good

away from his family too young in a 2008 automobile accident, is an inspiration to Jonathan, other family members and friends. Jake became interested in show trucks and fielded a MATS entry every year starting in 2003. Jonathan completed a black and orange Peterbilt day cab tribute truck in Jake’s honor during 2010 and showed it for a couple of years. truck. It’s a 1990 Peterbilt 379 powered by a rebuilt 650-horse Cat 3406E. Power is applied through a 13-speed and 3:55 rear gears. The truck rides on a 292-inch wheelbase. With the restoration process starting from two frame rails sitting on the shop floor, the all-steel truck wound up being very similar to a glider kit. Setting out to build something v e r y u n iq ue , Jonathan dropped the cab three inches and chopped the top six inches. Doing something others said could not be done, the front fenders are stationary; only the hood tilts forward. The curved visor with knockouts and the simply designed, swooshed dash are unique. Rear suicide doors are another standout feature. Jonathan handled about 97% of

A career body man and painter, father-in-law, Don Graber, applied the pearl white and black primary colors. The flames and other graphics were then added by Top Gun Kustoms. Driven to MATS 2016 in a rainstorm with the paint barely dry, The Hustler required a tremendous amount of cleaning and detailing to prepare for its premier showing. Jonathan’s masterpiece took second place to Bob Harley, a regular contender in the Builders Bobtail category. As a result of some tweaking, fine tuning and detailing, the tables were turned at Overdrive’s 2016 Pride & Polish Show in Dallas held in conjunction with the August 24-26 Great American Trucking Show. The Hustler became the 2016 Builders Bobtail Grand Champion. All the work, short nights and unwavering dedication paid off. In addition to the positive impact on the judges, this masterpiece drew a great deal of crowd attention including that of RoadKing magazine’s managing editor.

Eilen Trademark Trucks When identifying a truck fleet and establishing an identity, a strong case can be made for consistent paint schemes, graphics and lettering. As you may have gathered, however, that’s not the Eilen way. The custom paint and graphics are intentionally different on every Eilen truck and trailer. About 65 trucks, including 15 Fitzgerald glider kits, and 100 or so specialized trailers bear little resemblance to each other. That’s just perfect for the mixed fleet fielded by Tom Eilen and his two sons. When the Eilen boys were growing up, Tom typically ordered three new trucks every year, so each son could select a favorite color, design and striping. This approach was recently on display at the September 9 and 10 Big Iron Classic Truck Show in Kasson, MN. Pat also competed in the show’s very popular truck pulling competition. The foundation of Eilen & Sons Trucking is built on simple principles—be on time and have premium equipment. With the wide variety of dry bulk and liquid commodities hauled locally, regionally, and beyond, you’d never guess these trucks are frequent show winners that haul a wide range of cargo including: • Brick • Coal • Construction Materials • Decorative Rock • Demolition Materials • Dry Goods • Glass • Gravel & Sand

• Landscape Supplies • Liquid Fertilizer • Lumber • Mail • Metals • Pre-cast Concrete • Road Salt • Water

With an eye on the future and a steady hand on the rudder, Tom Eilen has guided his company through good times and bad. Having grown up in the business, the boys have seen and done it all. Washing and polishing trucks as youngsters evolved into maintenance and repair. Jonathan also spent 10 years behind the wheel, including substantial OTR experience. He revived the dry van business that now has 10 to 15 rigs on the road at all times. Tom owns the majority of the trucks and trailers, but Pat and Jonathan own some of the rolling stock with dedicated owner-operators making up the balance. In the process of being groomed for greater management responsibilities, Pat and Jonathan are spending more time in the office these days, continuing to learn the ropes handling a variety of functions. While there’s much more to this story, you can see the tightknit Eilen family has accomplished a lot together. Youngest sibling, Jodie, has a full-time job, but finds the time to help out at the shop or in the office when she can. In honor of Jake, the family hosts a motorcycle ride through southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin every Memorial Day weekend. On the home front, Jonathan is blessed with a supportive wife, Krystle, and two young children, Kelby and Adelia. Based on doing things in style, customers and residents of the surrounding communities can always spot an Eilen truck coming down the road, because of its beautiful paint scheme, sleek graphics, polished wheels and chrome stacks. o

IMPROVED SERVICEABILITY Freightliner Engineers Hit Design Home Run

JUST INTRODUCED BY FREIGHTLINER, THE NEW CASCADIA® WAS DESIGNED TO BE MORE EFFICIENT FOR THE DRIVER AND FOR OWNERS with what Freightliner calls a focus on “Real Cost of Ownership.” Freightliner’s unique approach to the design of this vehicle is commendable. They invited professional service technicians to come in and perform common maintenance and repair tasks. When the techs discovered a service routine that seemed unreasonable, the engineers went back to their drawing boards. In a word, the results are amazing! Common tasks such as removing the heater core are accomplished with ease. I’m a very hard person to convince, unless you show me. I can truly say the Freightliner engineers hit a home run with this truck’s technician-friendly design. Perhaps you’ve already read about the fuel efficiency enhancements, the upgraded aerodynamics, the intelligent powertrain management system, the improved DT12 automated manual transmission coupled with a DD13 or DD15 engine, plus plenty of other cutting-edge advancements. We’ll likely tackle some of these topics in upcoming RoadKing issues. To start, I’m more intrigued by the techniciancentric enhancements, knowing that if you make it easier to complete a given maintenance or repair task, getting the vehicle back on the road sooner results in substantial productivity gains.

You’ll Love the New “eVault” I want to start with a new in-cab storage compartment for electronic control units that Freightliner calls the “eVault.” When 16

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

RoadKing

I first laid eyes on this neatly packaged space just in front of the passenger seat and below the glove box, I was somewhat indifferent due to my lack of knowledge. When unveiled, the first thing I noticed was the power distribution box, or what most technicians typically call a fuse box. It has been moved from multiple locations to this easy-to-access eVault. What happened next blew me away. With just the removal of a few retainers, this power distribution box can be repositioned out of the way for easier troubleshooting and repair. I immediately noticed that the main power wires were designed so the component can be placed out of the way with very little effort! I’ve been working on trucks for 36 years, and have never seen a truck that allows this much fuse box movement without extreme effort. After the fuse box was aside, I started to grin because I saw the ABS computer. It can sometimes be a mystery to locate, but those days are over, because most computers on this truck are located in the “eVault.” I then noticed a computer that I had never seen before. I would soon learn that this new supercomputer is a combination of separate computers used

on earlier models. This new consolidated computer is called a Single SAM. Other computers that just one year ago were located in multiple areas on the truck, including outside on the driver’s side firewall, are now one big easy-to-find supercomputer. To make servicing these computers even easier, you just push and lift. Presto, they’re out of the “eVault” and in your hand. This first ever approach to locating the computers in a single spot, inside the cab and out of the external elements—I believe—is a game changer.

But Wait, There’s More Just when I was getting excited about the servicing ease for even the complex systems on this truck, my instructor took me to the blower motor. Typically, it does not last as long as the truck; consequently, the blower motor will likely need troubleshooting and replacing one day. To my surprise, the engineers have positioned the blower motor in the dash so it can be removed in a very short timeframe with little effort. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve removed a blower motor from a truck and thought: why don’t the manufacturers make this component easier to access,

remove and troubleshoot? Freightliner absolutely nailed it. One thing that usually makes technicians cringe is the need to work deep in the dash of a vehicle. The wire harnesses are organized and fitted on most trucks to allow very little space and wiggle room. Many times, you can tell a technician who’s been working under and around a dash by the catlike scratches on the back of his or her hands. This truck has a top dash plate that totally moves out of the way, allowing direct access to dash components like connectors, studs and switches. Finally, when I thought I had seen it all, my instructor took me to the engine compartment on the passenger side underneath and behind the air filter housing. I know this spot and mostly detest working in this area, because there is

little to no room, even though common components such as AC expansion valves, horns and switches are located there. Much to my surprise, the instructor removed a few bolts and the entire air filter and related devices were on the shop floor, allowing easy, direct access for servicing components that previously would be hard to even see. I have only scratched the surface of the numerous technician-friendly enhancements on this new Cascadia. I want to conclude by expressing my appreciation to the Freightliner engineering and design team that took the time to think about professional service technicians and improving the uptime of trucks. I’m confident these service enhancements will lead to improved efficiencies, and perhaps better longevity for the hard-working technicians in the trucking industry. o

OVERCOMING THE FEAR OF

EXERCISE BY: SIPHIWE BALEKA, FOUNDER, FITNESS TRUCKING

ONCE YOU START EXERCISING AND BEGIN SEEING RESULTS, YOU’LL KNOW YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH WHAT YOU MAY HAVE THOUGHT WAS IMPOSSIBLE.

FOR MANY PEOPLE, NOT JUST DRIVERS, STARTING TO EXERCISE IS A FRIGHTENING PROSPECT. If you are already overweight or obese, chances are you’ve avoided regular exercise, and let’s face it; you probably lack confidence and feel embarrassed or ashamed. You may associate exercise with feeling discomfort, pain, sweat, toil, and humiliation. For some, these thoughts range all the way back to childhood! The last thing you want to do is expose yourself by exercising outside of your truck and— heaven forbid—letting someone see you! So it becomes easy to “hide away” in the truck and reinforce a pattern of avoidance and denial. Unfortunately, this unhealthy fear of exercise only contributes to additional weight gain and related health problems. If you’ve had thoughts like that, you’re not alone. This common 18

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

RoadKing

mental block is one of the biggest obstacles stopping drivers from taking action and starting to exercise. So it’s important to address these innermost feelings first, in order to make the commitment to improving your body. If you are worried about being seen by other drivers or what other people may think, please consider this. Most of the time, drivers are speculating that someone is watching and perhaps making fun of them. So what? Why are other people so important that what they think would stop you from taking care of yourself? Do you know their names? Will you ever see them again? Should you even care what they think? Don’t let someone else’s narrow-minded opinion have that kind of power over your life! Focus on you.

You Can Inspire Others More important, though, is this. As long as you are speculating that someone is mocking you, you could speculate the opposite. For every inconsiderate person that is watching, another person is admiring your courage and is being inspired by you. When other drivers see you exercising, it shames them. They think to themselves, “Man, I know I need to be exercising, too!” Ever watch the TV show, The Biggest Loser? Millions of people love that show, because they’re inspired by seeing others overcome adversity, triumph over obesity, and transform themselves. You don’t have to be on TV to do that. You can “be a light unto this world” and inspire someone each and every day by your example. It’s your choice—focus on the negative and the haters that may be watching, or focus on taking care of yourself and being an inspiration to others. It’s your choice! Once you make that choice, however, getting started can be very challenging. The biggest factor: convenience. If it isn’t easy, you won’t take action. If you don’t know what to do, if you have to do a lot of preparation, if a plan is too complicated, if you have to learn a lot of new exercises or obtain equipment, you just won’t do it. Especially if it is going to take too much time.

Start with 4 Minute Fit Fortunately, there is a solution. During four years of driving, I tested and worked out the most convenient and most effective way for drivers to boost their metabolism, burn fat while they are driving, and lose weight and belly fat fast. It’s called “4 Minute Fit.” My groundbreaking research shows that drivers can lose an average of 7% of their body weight in just 13 weeks by moving with maximum intensity for just four minutes every day! It doesn’t matter what movements you do—marching or running in place, squats, hops, jumping jacks, shadow boxing, knee crushers, mountain climbers, push-ups, etc.—so long as you move with as much intensity as you can. Every driver is at a different fitness level with different physical capabilities, but every driver can move. The key to burning fat is placing a maximum demand on the need for energy. This is why you have to go all out. Working with hundreds of drivers, I have seen that you don’t need to exercise for 30, 40 or 60 minutes to achieve results. You can start with only four minutes a day and progress from there. As drivers, sometimes that’s about all you have time for, anyway. You don’t need to change clothes, you don’t need any equipment, and you can do it right on the side of your truck, or inside your cab, or in the shower room. how to do it, and coaches you through the workout in real time. All you do is push “play” and follow along. Within those 15 minutes, you will gradually increase the intensity of your activity, so that you will be burning fat at an accelerated rate. This is the only exercise program designed by a driver specifically for drivers. Driving is a special brotherhood and sisterhood, and currently 69% of drivers are packing enough extra pounds to be classified as obese (35 or more pounds overweight). Remember, we are all in this together. When drivers get out of their trucks and exercise, not only does it help the individual, it helps the next person, too. Ultimately, if you want to transform your life and those of others from the unhealthiest occupation to a healthy occupation, all of us need to participate in a movement where it is perfectly normal for drivers of all shapes and sizes to be seen out of their trucks exercising. TIPS FOR A SENSIBLE START As part of your commitment to begin exercising, eat healthier and lose weight, be sure to review the StayFit articles that appeared in three recent RoadKing issues: March-April, pages 8 & 9; JulyAugust, pages 12 & 13; and September-October, pages 14 & 15. If you have any doubts about your ability to handle even four minutes of intense physical activity, be sure to consult with your personal physician before beginning. Don’t have copies? You can find these recent issues archived at RoadKing.com. Don’t forget that most TA-Petro locations have well-equipped Fitness Rooms. You can engage in your workout routine while enjoying a TV program. Then you can head for a consistently “Voted Best” shower on the Interstate. Plus, you’ll find many nutritious meals and snack choices that make it easy for you to focus on protein, while minimizing carbs. Make TA-Petro locations your preferred stops for health, fitness and nutrition.

OUT MY WINDSHIELD BY: DAVID A. KOLMAN, SENIOR EDITOR

THIS TIME

I Mean It A SENSIBLE APPROACH TO ACHIEVING NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Write Them Down

THE END OF ONE YEAR AND THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TIME FOR REFLECTING on all that has taken place during the prior year and for looking forward to the coming year. It is a time when we ponder adjustments and make determinations for the New Year ahead. Poet Edith Lovejoy Pierce said this about New Year’s: We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity, and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. Over time, I’ve learned what each New Year brings depends to a great deal 22

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

upon what I bring to the New Year. Read that again, and let it sink in. Over time, I’ve learned what each New Year brings depends to a great deal upon what I bring to the New Year. Like many others, I make resolutions for each New Year, and I’m going to show you how you can make them and stand a better chance of keeping them.

RoadKing

Writing your resolutions down is critical. Why? Because making promises to one’s self means we are thinking about achieving some important objectives. What’s more, research indicates that people who make explicit resolutions and write them down are more successful in attaining their stated goals, compared to those who merely think about goals. That’s because once something is written down, it becomes tangible, and we are less likely to forget about it. Experience has taught me that to keep my resolutions, they must be important to me, be realistic and be achievable.

My List Following—in no particular order—are my top resolutions for 2017. In making

your resolutions, include more specifics wherever you can. ›› Continue to learn and develop new skills. ›› Keep learning about and taking advantage of new technologies to make trucking easier, safer and more productive. ›› Strive to be more of a professional in all that I do. ›› Be more positive, look on the bright side and don’t get caught up in negativity, disappointment and failure that are, after all, a part of life. ›› Be more open minded to the ideas and suggestions of others. ›› Do not take things for granted. ›› Get more organized and better manage my time. ›› Pay greater attention to my health and wellness.

STEPPINGSTONES TO KEEPING YOUR RESOLUTIONS Following is a solid tip to help you be more effective at keeping your New Year’s resolutions: set goals. Doing so gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. Plus, goals provide a benchmark against which you can gauge your progress. ›› Spend more quality time with family and friends. ›› Do more volunteering and mentoring. ›› Genuinely enjoy life more.

Use Your Experience Many years ago, my dear father told me: The end of a year is not an end or a beginning. Rather, it is going forward with the wisdom and intelligence that comes from experience. May you do well in keeping your New Year’s resolutions, whatever they may be. Best wishes for a 2017 filled with only good things, especially health, happiness and contentment. o

1. Decide upon specific goals and why you want to achieve them. 2. Make sure your goals are really important to you and that they are realistic and achievable. 3. Post your goals in a location where you will see them on a regular basis. 4. Devise a plan to accomplish your goals. It should include establishing concrete criteria for measuring progress toward each goal. (From experience, I’ve discovered that it is best to set goals that can be quantified and easily measured.) 5. Establish a timeframe for achieving your goals. This should include target dates, along with frequencies for specific action steps that are important to achieving your goals. (By doing this, you can document tangible evidence of your progress.) 6. Reward yourself. Because recognition is a good motivator, reward yourself for achieving success. 7. Make adjustments. If you’re not making the desired progress, adjust your action steps. There is nothing wrong with revising a resolution at any time.

Fitting Tributes STANDING TALL FOR AMERICA

Originally concepted with American flags, the graphics were expanded to include the major branches of the U.S. military plus family members who served.

RoadKing

Make no mistake, Lynn and Shelly Baxter of San Antonio, Texas are very proud of Shelly’s son and daughter-in-law, their employers’ family, and the major branches of the U.S. military. One look at the 40-ft. 2006 Freightliner M2 straight truck they drive, however, is not enough to see all of the tributes. You have to look at multiple graphic wraps on the front, back and both sides. Husband and wife team drivers since 1990, the Baxters joined Landstar Express America in 2004, upon going to work for Barney Magary, a now-deceased Navy veteran who became a small motor carrier. With nine trucks in the expedited-services fleet, Magary’s stepson and current company owner, Alvin Mann, funded the Baxter’s efforts to create the uniquely themed military tribute truck. It salutes active and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including members of the Magary and Baxter families. The Marines are featured on the hood, the Air Force on the rear doors. Shelly Baxter’s son, Brian Snook, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer, appear in their Army uniforms on the right side. Brian is in the process of retiring after 20 years, and Jennifer is a couple years away from retiring. Barney Magary, Mann, and Barney’s granddaughter, Beth, are shown in their Navy uniforms on the left side. Displaying American flags on both sides was the original idea, but after further suggestions were made, the graphics expanded to their current look, which was updated in 2013. Mann and his wife endorsed and funded the project, while Shelly’s sister, Judi Privett, compiled all the elements into the thematic murals. When asked why they wanted the graphic wraps displayed on the truck, the Baxters’ response is simply: “Love, pride, duty, heritage, God, country and family.” o

MEN, LISTEN UP! LADIES, YOU CAN LEARN SOME THINGS, TOO. First-time author Patricia Churchey wants to share some cooking tips and recipes from her 20 years of cooking on the road, while professional truck driving. Early on after looking in the mirror one day, she lost 50 pounds—and has kept the weight off. Churchey concentrated on avoiding white flour and refined sugar, and started looking at ingredient labels more carefully. As the July-August RoadKing StayFit® article discussed, it’s all about limiting the carbs and focusing on protein. With a little creativity and the right onboard cookware, even a beginner can use Churchey’s Traveler’s Cookbook to prepare a healthy, piping-hot meal while driving, and enjoy it when the time is right. The Florida native and over-the road driver for Dartco, Inc., owned by Dart Transit, has compiled 25 of her favorite recipes that are focused on a variety of lunch and dinner suggestions, and provide greattasting leftovers, too. Nutritious, hot meals on the go are easier than you might think.

Down with the Old

Up with the New

THE OLD TA TRUCK SERVICE FACILITY AT CANDLER, NORTH CAROLINA HAD SEEN BETTER DAYS. The decision to remodel or build new was quite easy, but shutting down operations was not an option. Too many customers relied on TA Candler for truck service. The decision was made to tear down the old facility and build the new one in phases, always keeping two bays available for service. Under the direction of Truck Service General Manager Chris Spaulding, the new, fully operational 5,000-sq.-ft. building at Exit 37 on I-40 speaks for itself. “The newly remodeled truck service center in Candler offers our customers more convenience for their truck service needs,” said Tom O’Brien, President and CEO of 28

Not Just

LIFE ON THE ROAD WITH FOUR FRIENDS

30

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

MEET RODERICK GREEN. AFTER FOUR YEARS ABOARD THE USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN69), HE WAS FED UP WITH COOKING FOR A CREW OF 3,200, plus an air wing numbering 2,480. After consultation with his wife, Cassandra, he decided to become a professional OTR driver in 1997. He credits a SWIFT trainer with providing a solid foundation for building his career. He credits his wife for keeping him well grounded in life. They have an adult son, Roderick, Jr., who lives in Florida and a daughter, Myricle, the caboose, born on Christmas Day in 2009. Since June of 2015, Roderick has driven for Dedicated Logistics LLC based in Crossett, Arkansas, his boyhood home. He’s in the process of owning his first truck used to haul recycled paper, primarily to mills in Wisconsin, returning to the South and Southeast with finished paper goods of all kinds.

A Crowded Cab With the blessing of his employer, Roderick takes to the road with four cab mates. An elderly couple, Henry and Evon, a two-year-old, Lewis, and C.J., a gorilla, are his daily companions. Although they get along very well, they make for a rather crowded cab. Always one to make his classmates laugh in high school, a talent inherited from his mother, Roderick had a four-year run as an amateur standup comedian. In 2009, he met a man who just happened to be a preacher and encouraged him to give ventriloquism a try. He offered to make his characters at a discounted price in exchange for the commitment to only use them for doing good. During a recent return trip from Wisconsin, Roderick and Mr. Henry (left) stopped at the TA Janesville Travel Center to engage drivers coming and going from the fuel desk. Many were intrigued by their presence and struck up a conversation. Much to the delight of those who participated and those who listened in, they learned about the special relationship between Roderick and Henry. The occasional loud bark of a watchdog on high alert turned many heads searching for the source. Henry had been on the road for 57 years; traveled every road in the Lower

48. Driving only Petes, he racked up nine million miles with no tickets and no accidents. It was his first day with Roderick, whom he was charged with training. The banter between the two of them and the TA customers hit on all sorts of familiar trucking topics. Much to the delight of TA Janesville owner, Jim Campbell, Henry unknowingly mistook him for a doctor during several brief encounters. Henry was seeking advice about his Stage 4 case of termites.

Connecting with Audience To observe Roderick and Henry engage their fellow drivers in conversation is an exercise in the art of human interaction. As a result of being very observant, Roderick and Henry successfully engaged drivers and other passersby in conversation. Showing the wisdom of his experience, Henry was particularly adept at connecting. It could be the company names on their shirts, the logos of sports teams on their caps, a favorite NASCAR driver, the way they dressed, their regional accents, or any number of other features that most wouldn’t even notice. Some people even returned with their fellow travelers in tow just to meet Henry. He magically remembered serving in Vietnam with Dick; commented on how he hadn’t changed a bit, and recalled the medals he won including a Purple Heart.

“Parents, teachers, superintendents and coaches love motivational messages wrapped in humor.”

“It’s easy to learn what I do,” said Roderick. “The voices and inflections come with practice. The hard parts are mastering a character, conveying his or her unique personality traits, and syncing up the movements.” Roderick and his companions typically log their 11 hours between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. To stay sharp during their time off the road, they like to engage drivers and other guests, usually numbering in the hundreds every week, at their favorite truckstops. They’re even working on adding Spanish as a second language.

Kids Are Special From day one, Roderick’s only goal was influencing people’s days in positive ways. When home, he regularly works church events, handles Chamber of Commerce and corporate meetings, visits burn units, cancer wards and vacation bible schools. He accepts payment when people can afford to pay, but only in amounts they volunteer. He has no set fees. “Performing for people is like a drug,”

Although not quite sure what they were getting into at first, Tiffany and Ibrahim Muhammed, 12-year veteran team drivers for RND Express LLC in the lower 48, took a liking to Henry’s quick wit.

he says. “The resulting high is addictive. Putting smiles on people’s faces of all ages with clean humor is reward enough.” Roderick has a special place in his heart for kids. “I love it when kids light up; when I can instill a spark in them,” he says. “I’m able to convey messages that encourage good behavior—things like responsibility, safety, bullying, respect for authority, the value of education, minding parents, being different is okay, even eating vegetables and brushing teeth. Kids really love it when I can work in animal sounds. “It’s also important that kids understand what I do is not just a joke. Jokes get me in the door, but messages of support and positive reinforcement come through loud and clear. Parents, teachers, superintendents and coaches love motivational messages wrapped in humor. I’ve even handled some fireups on Thursdays before big games and motivational speeches at halftime. The gifts I’ve been given need to be shared. It’s my way of giving back, trying to be a positive influence on everyone I meet, especially the kids.” o

TAKING HEALTHCARE TO THE CAB

BRINGING HEALTHCARE

DIRECTLY TO YOU Solving the Problem of Convenient Access to Affordable Healthcare BY: DR. JOHN McELLIGOTT, DR. JOHN’S MEDICAL SOLUTIONS

setting up sleep apnea tests and helping me take drivers’ emergency calls. We saved a few lives and improved the quality of life for others as long as we could. Fortunately, the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund (SCF) survived thanks to many sponsors such as OOIDA and TA-Petro and contributions from many generous drivers. More recently, it was back to the radio with Dave Nemo and Tim Ridley on the St. Christopher Minute, which now runs every Friday morning at 6:30 am EST. I always tell the trucker audience that, “We’ve saved more truckers because of Dave Nemo, Tim Ridley, and staff than I have working in the emergency room and in private practice combined.” Now what? We failed at bringing you the network of PDMD clinics originally envisioned, and we failed at helping a large number of truckers become healthier. Statistics for those helped by SCF, however, show rising mortality rates at younger ages among truckers in general. Clearly, a different approach is needed to address driver healthcare issues. The answer is “TAKING HEALTHCARE TO THE CAB.”

Access & Affordability Welcome to Taking Healthcare to the Cab, a new regular feature authored by Dr. John McElligott. It will provide useful healthcare information about a wide range of topics pertaining to professional drivers. SINCE 2006, I’VE BEEN TRYING TO HELP PROFESSIONAL OTR DRIVERS BECOME HEALTHIER and increase their access to medical care. This focus began with the Professional Driver Medical Depots (PDMD) Clinics located in Knoxville, TN; West Memphis, AR; Atlanta, GA; Peru, IL and Laredo, TX. By 2009, PDMD was seeing about 100 drivers a day and conducting 30 to 40 in-cab sleep apnea tests. Ten additional clinics were on the drawing boards when the Great Recession shut us down. This was a difficult time for my staff and me, both personally and professionally. Since the closure of the PDMD clinics, many drivers who might have come to PDMD for their healthcare needs have turned up at my private occupational clinics, Occupational Health Systems (OHS), 34

in Knoxville and Clinton, TN. We have maintained drivers’ records, so we can maintain service continuity, and have honored all PDMD rates. I treated many drivers in the cabs of their trucks and have seen many at local hospitals where I am on staff or have admitting privileges. Unfortunately, this is not enough to put a dent in the need for quality healthcare within the transportation industry. It is not convenient for some to utilize one of my offices. Fewer and fewer have stopped by the office since PDMD closed. Some still plan their visits around annual DOT exams, and of course, I continue to take calls daily on referrals from Radio Nemo. Luckily, Jon Osburn, a trucker/paramedic (we are both former Navy Corpsman) ran the Medical Resources Vehicle or “MERV”,

Professional driving keeps many on the road for weeks at a time, and sometimes, even months. You can’t access healthcare in the way that most people take for granted. You have to be on the road. No load, no income. For years, I struggled to find a solution to this dilemma. I wanted to bring healthcare to drivers in a way that would require little or no time away from the road and, more importantly, make healthcare affordable. A coincidental meeting with Burke Mays, from Mays & Associates, brought the pieces of the puzzle together. The collaboration with Burke and his team led to the formation of Dr. John’s Medical Solutions. The company brings modern medicine to drivers where they work and live by providing affordable medical care at home, at the carrier workstation, or in the cab. Dr. John’s Medical Solutions, with the help of RoadKing magazine, Radio Nemo, and “The New” IdleAir, have developed a way to make your cab, your fleet office, your

Dr. John McElligott’s passion to serve started as a Navy Corpsman at age 18. Soon after corps school, John was assigned to the Marine Corps as a fleet marine corpsman. He realized during his 1967-68 Vietnam service that he loved saving lives and helping people. Upon returning home, he began a long and distinguished academic career on his way to becoming a medical doctor, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Today he specializes in occupational medicine and founded Occupational Health Systems in Knoxville, TN. He continues to serve hundreds of thousands of road warriors who tune in to the Tim Ridley Show on Road Dog Radio (Sirius XM 146) every Friday morning. Drivers from all over the country listen to and talk with Dr. John about a wide variety of medical concerns. Connecting with and helping professional drivers is a way of life for a man who has dedicated his career to assisting people critically underserved by the traditional healthcare system.

DRIVER APPRECIATION

TO THE MAX Landstar BCO Team Member Wins New Truck When a trucking company hosts a driver appreciation event, the opportunity to win a new truck is rarely on the radar screen. Attendees at the September 13 and 14 Landstar BCO Appreciation Days arrived at the Rockford, Illinois operations center knowing that one lucky owner operator would be driving home in a new 2017 flame red Kenworth T680. OPEN TO LANDSTAR BUSINESS CAPACITY OWNERS (BCOs), THE 2016 APPRECIATION DAYS shined a spotlight on Landstar’s unique business model that relies on a network of independent agents and a network of independent, capacity providers. With the red carpet rolled out for BCOs during National Driver Appreciation Week, the annual gathering focuses on achieving three primary goals: 1. Showing genuine appreciation for the BCO’s day-in and day-out dedication to serving customer needs. 2. Delivering important messages about the state of Landstar, its operating units, and the industry in general with a special emphasis on safety. 36

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

3. Providing a forum for a two-way exchange of ideas focused on improving customer service, operations, safety, technology, and bottom-line results. “The invitation-only event is restricted to Landstar BCOs,” said Rocco Davanzo, Executive Vice President of Capacity Development. “Dating back to 1985, these Appreciation Days have become an important part of our culture. They provide a great opportunity for BCOs to engage directly with senior Landstar management on any topic. Numerous improvements and efficiency gains have resulted from the many interactions and mutual understandings that characterize these meetings. “A good example is our freight load board. Based on BCO

feedback over the years, it has been regularly tweaked and fine tuned to keep pace with the ever-changing operating environment. A huge part of the ways in which BCOs interact with the load board has been developed based on the feedback received here and the resulting follow-ups, both internally and with BCOs.”

Structured with Flexibility The two-day event provided a mix of general sessions for all attendees and eight breakout sessions related to various capacity segments and topics of interest to specific BCO groups. The day one, highlevel overview delivered by Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni, focused on the state of the industry and the overall economy. In addition to his thoughts on supply and demand, pricing and the outlook for the year ahead, he reviewed how Landstar is structured to meet the needs of the marketplace in relation to the competitive and legislative environments in which the company operates. Six high-ranking company executives representing key functional responsibilities participated in the open-mic session. Any topic was fair game, no restrictions. In front of everyone, the responsible executive who could best address a given topic answered each question. BCOs are promised honest answers and explanations, even if they may not like what they hear. Emphasis is

placed on airing all topics of interest with open, respectful, two-way communication. History has demonstrated that BCOs appreciate these sessions and find them to be mutually beneficial. A Q&A with six sales agents sensitized BCOs to the issues faced in serving customer needs and meeting expectations. BCOs gained insights—perhaps a different perspective—into agent-customer relationships. When the customer point of view is brought into the discussion, the subject matter can be eye opening. A different and better level of respect resulted from this group discussion. Eight breakout sessions of interest to specific business segments and the BCOs who provide the related service were scheduled during the course of the two days. BCOs could choose the two sessions of most value to them. Rocco Davanzo, for example, hosted one on various technology offerings. Topics included why a new technology was used, or not used. Is it meeting expectations? How can it be improved? Are you aware of something better that should be offered? Heavy Haul, Expedited Services and Load Securement are examples of other breakouts. A general session regarding safety and compliance issues ended the formal business meetings each day. Raffle tickets for the post-dinner prize drawings were distributed at that time. A wide range of door prizes provided by Landstar and the various vendors in attendance included six Microsoft Surface™ Tablets, a set of steer tires, and many other prizes of significant value. Of course, none of them compared to the Kenworth T680 awarded on Tuesday evening. o

The annual Landstar Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway, powered by Comdata, is a special show of thanks to Landstar BCOs for their service excellence and their dedication to safety. To qualify, BCOs had to be accident- and claimfree since January 2015. Entries into the “electronic” barrel were earned in numerous ways through June 30, 2016 including attendance at safety meetings, number of loads delivered, clean Level I inspections and technology utilization, among others. More than 220,000 entries were earned by BCOs across the United States. Five finalists were drawn in advance and, if not on the attendee list, were notified and flown in for the big event. One by one, they were called to the stage by Jim Gattoni after dinner. The keys to the Kenworth were secretly placed under one of five boxes lettered A to E and positioned on a table. With assistance from three Comdata executives, each finalist drew a pingpong ball numbered 1 to 5 in the order called to the stage. Starting with ball No. 1, each finalist then selected the box they wished to stand behind. On the count of three, the boxes were lifted. Tyrone Grant of Rockwall, Texas, a Landstar BCO since 2012, uncovered the keys under box D. He was the fourth finalist called to the stage. Tyrone and his wife, Lynn, became the proud owners of the 2017 Kenworth T680. They’ll also receive a cash payment from Landstar to help cover the additional income taxes due on the value of the truck. For the non-winners, Comdata announced its commitment to contribute to the cost of the next Landstar Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway at the 2017 BCO Appreciation Days.

TMC SUPERTECH

Championship Performance! The annual Technology & Maintenance Council’s National Technician Skills Competition—TMC SuperTech—is North America’s premier professional commercial vehicle technician skills event. In a record-breaking performance, five ASE-certified TA Truck Service technicians earned titles in 11 hands-on skills challenges; swept first, second and third overall in the inaugural Trailer competition; and won fifth overall in the SuperTech category. In the associated TMC FutureTech competition, a TA Truck Service student technician claimed a hands-on skills challenge title. TA Truck Service earned the second highest combined titles as a company in the competition. These wins represent the commitment TA Truck Service has to hiring the best technicians and providing them with comprehensive training in order to have the best truck maintenance and repair centers on the Interstate. The two-day competition consists of written tests and hands-on skills challenges. The TA Truck Service winners were announced on September 21 at the awards luncheon in Raleigh, North Carolina as follows: Scott Davidson, TA Madison, Wisconsin • Trailers First Overall • Trailer Brakes skills challenge champion • Trailer Liftgates skills challenge champion • Trailer ABS skills challenge champion • Trailer Fasteners skills challenge champion Robert Anderson, TA Mobile, Alabama • Trailers Second overall • Trailer Electrical skills challenge champion • Trailer Tire/Wheel skills challenge champion Michael Kerfoot, Jr., Petro San Antonio, Texas • Trailers Third overall • Trailer Coupler skills challenge champion • Trailer Electrical System Corrosion skills challenge champion Mike Gavrielides, TA Madison, Georgia • SuperTech Fifth Overall • Wheel End 1 skills challenge champion • Service Info skills challenge champion Justin Munoz, TA San Antonio, Texas • Trailer 7 Pin Receptacle skills challenge champion Adam Sprock, TA Whitestown, Indiana (TMC FutureTech) • Precision Measuring skills challenge champion TA Truck Service technicians are distinguished by more than 2,000 ASE certifications. The TA Truck Service network includes 243 truck service facilities, 1,079 repair bays, nearly 3,000 technicians, a fleet of more than 1,600 RoadSquad Connect™ emergency roadside assistance vehicles, and a growing fleet of RoadSquad OnSite mobile maintenance vehicles. Making Great Strides! Thanks a Million Times 2 Thanks to your generosity and that of TA-Petro employees, the 2016 Band Together for SCF campaign raised a record-setting $278,096. These funds will be used by the St. Christopher Truckers Development & Relief Fund (SCF) to help professional drivers experiencing financial hardships due to medical problems. As in past years, those making $1 donations received a commemorative wristband and those making $5 donations received an SCF keychain. One hundred percent of all donations go to SCF. Since contributions began in 2010, your generous support has helped raise more than $2 million for SCF. As of July 2016, the SCF has helped more than 1,550 truck drivers and their families with monthly bills, including utilities and mortgages.

$105,000 More to SCF TravelCenters of America LLC, (TravelCenters), operator of TA® and Petro Stopping Centers® branded travel centers partnered with Blue Tiger USA® to benefit truck drivers through the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund (SCF) with a portion of the proceeds from sales of specially designed Blue Tiger Elite headsets. A check in the amount of $105,000 was presented to SCF on Thursday, August 25 during a press conference at the Great American Trucking Show (GATS) in Dallas. The check presented to SCF was made possible by Blue Tiger, who designated $10 for each headset sold by TravelCenters locations. This special promotion runs through December 31, 2016.

$5,000 to NMFA TravelCenters of America LLC, operator of the TA® and Petro Stopping Centers® travel center brands, has partnered with the National Military Family Association (NMFA), a nonprofit that works to strengthen and protect military families, to benefit veterans and their families in need. From June 28 to August 5, participating Country Pride® and Iron Skillet® locations contributed $1.00 to the NMFA for each entrée ordered by professional drivers and guests from a select group of menu items. A check in the amount of $5,000 was presented to NMFA on Wednesday, September 21 in Alexandria, VA.

Thank you for your support of TravelCenters of America and our TA and Petro Stopping Centers brands throughout 2016. It was a year of making great strides in our continuing efforts to serve you better. The TA-Petro network added three new locations: TA Hillsboro, Texas; TA Bernardo, Texas; and Petro Wilmington, Illinois. More than 15 other locations were remodeled or upgraded. With their expanded range of amenities, Minit® Mart branded convenience stores replaced generic Travel Stores in more than 39 locations. You’ve asked for more restaurant variety, and we’ve responded with the addition of popular national and regional table-service brands including Fuddruckers, Black Bear Diner, and our first Quaker Steak & Lube coming to the Petro Columbia North location in South Carolina. Quick-serve brands, now numbering 18, are providing you with additional choices. Looking ahead, we’ll continue responding to your menu and service preferences, including more StayFit options. Now consolidated under the TA Truck Service umbrella brand, you can expect to see expanded capabilities across our network. TA Truck Service incorporates industry best practices including state-of-the-art technical training, quality control programs, the broadest range of services over the road, and a nationwide parts and service warranty. TA Truck Service is also an authorized express service and light-duty repair center for the Freightliner and Western Star ServicePoint program. With seven 2016 additions, 19 TA-Petro locations have been renamed to honor 21 Citizen Drivers. These men and women serve as shining examples of those who have gone above and beyond, both professionally and personally, to serve their fellow drivers, their communities, and the industry we all love. Thanks to all drivers for the dedication and professionalism you bring to the service of your customers every day. As you approach the holiday season, please keep all of our men and women in uniform—many who are in harm’s way serving in distant locations, separated from their families—in your thoughts. If you’re inclined to honor veterans, the Wreaths Across America program is welcoming volunteers to help deliver wreaths to cemeteries all across this great land. The annual convoy to Arlington National Cemetery will be joining us for a complimentary Iron Skillet dinner at Petro Bordentown, New Jersey on the evening of Wednesday, December 14. On behalf of the thousands dedicated men and women who serve you in various capacities as part of the TA-Petro team, best wishes to you and your families for a joyous Holiday Season and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017.

Experience THE OLD WEST THE WESTERN SETTLEMENT OF TERMINUS OR “END-OF-THELINE” FOR THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD was founded in 1879 during the Arizona mining boom. One year later, the name was changed to Casa Grande (Spanish for Big House) in honor of the famous, prehistoric Hohokam Indian Casa Grande Ruins National Monument 20 miles to the northeast. Built between 1300 and 1400, the Casa Grande Ruins were protected as the nation’s first archeological reserve and declared a National Monument in 1918. Located midway between Phoenix and Tucson, Casa Grande has grown by 100 percent over the last 15 years. It has become the largest community in western Pinal County, since its 1915 incorporation. You can explore the city’s fascinating history at The Museum of Casa Grande. While taking a leisurely stroll through the award-winning Casa Grande Main Street historical shopping district, be sure to visit its many unique shops for that special, one-of-a-kind gift. Casa Grande is home to the Francisco Grande Hotel & Golf Resort, former spring training location for the San Francisco Giants. The first exhibition game played at Casa Grande was in 1961, with Willie Mays hitting a towering—before the era of juiced balls and corked bats—375-foot home run. The Giants no longer play at Francisco Grande, but the remodeled resort still features its unique, baseball-bat-shaped swimming pool. 58

Not to be missed is an architectural jewel—the historic Casa Grande Union High School—that now serves as the Casa Grande City Hall, while eye-catching, beautifully crafted stone buildings can be seen throughout historic downtown Casa Grande. About the same distance from the TA Travel Center as Casa Grande is Eloy, Arizona, which bills itself as the skydiving capital of the world. Eloy is home to the world’s largest skydive drop zone, Skydive Arizona. Visit the historic surroundings of the Old West next time you park your horses in the corral over at the nearby Eloy TA Travel Center. Learn more at CasaGrandeAZ.gov and EloyAZ.gov. o
