Memorable Moments

900 km Sponsored Cycle and Giving Day

A group of Senior School staff members cycled 900km from Drewsteignton in Devon to Glasgow over 9 days as part of the School’s 900th anniversary celebrations.

Raising money for the Bursary Fund, they made their way up the length of the UK. Pupils got involved too, cycling more locally, getting on exercise bikes and all forms of wheels to clock up their own kilometres! These wheely impressive efforts acted as the focal point of our first ever Giving Day, which raised over £85k (including gift aid) at the time of writing.

This was a memorable way to bring together the HSOG community as we continue to celebrate the School’s 900th anniversary. Our grateful thanks go to Mr Roderick Macpherson, Unicorn Pursuivant, who attended to speak about the School’s Coat of Arms, as well as to former HSOG pupil, The Very Rev Dr David Lacy, for his stirring Address on this most special occasion.

Homerton Prize

Three Sixth Year pupils were accepted onto the prestigious Cambridge University Homerton College Essay Programme.

Harvest Week

Junior School pupils enjoyed a memorable Harvest Week prior to the September Weekend break.

Children heard all about Harvest in assemblies and brought in goods throughout the week to be donated to Milngavie Foodbank and the Salvation Army, as well as generously raising money for the Fairshare Charity. The Outdoor Learning Committee (pictured, left) also took the chance to enjoy the sunshine as they harvested some impressive vegetables they planted back in the Spring Term. Great job!

The cross-curricular and multidisciplinary programme helps to equip participants with key skills considered desirable by university admissions. Click below to read more from Mustafa F, Alice G and Athena T on their experience of the programme.

Alice was also shortlisted in another global essay competitionyou can read more about this by clicking here.

Adventures Abroad

Alongside more local outings in the early part of the Autumn Term, HSOG pupils ventured further afield over the summer.

Transitus enjoyed their annual excursion to Normandy while a number of Senior School pupils headed a little further south to take in the incredible scenery of the Swiss Alps.

Those who crossed the Atlantic for the trip to Mexico earlier in the summer braved the small matter of a hurricane! They remained undeterred, spending a week exploring nature in the Mexican rainforest before heading to the coast for a spot of scuba diving and sunbathing, the perfect way to bring a truly memorable trip to an end.

Reading Schools Gold Award

This term we became the first independent school in the country to achieve a Reading Schools Gold accreditation and the first secondary school in Glasgow of any kind to achieve Gold!

This is a national accreditation programme for schools that are committed to building a reading culture for their learners and communities and so we are thrilled with this recognition as we have carefully fostered a reading for pleasure culture at HSOG.

Skiing Success

There was success for our young skiers at the SSSA Autumn Dual Slalom Series.

Congratulations go to our victorious S1-S3 team and to the Open team, who were runners up in the Senior competition. Well done too to the J1-J4 team who won silver medals in the Primary event (pictured, left).

Each of the three teams have now qualified for next month’s national finals in Edinburgh.
