Memorable Moments

Zanzibar Community Service Trip

Team Zanzibar enjoyed an unforgettable fortnight on the East African island of Zanzibar this summer.

More than 40 pupils and staff took part in the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) project at Kinuni School, helping to build a toilet block and drinking water fountain, as well as providing just under a tonne of trainers, crocs and uniform for those in need, kindly donated by the HSOG community.

A truly incredible experience!

RHS Gardening Awards

During the summer, the Junior School was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Gardening Awards Level 2.

To achieve this level, the Junior School was able to demonstrate its Outdoor Education Committee has started growing plants, is taking inspiration from children as to what to grow, basic gardening terms are used, hand tools are used safely and everyone involved has the skills to prepare the soil, sow, plant and water. Congratulations to the children involved, as well as to Junior School PE Teacher, Mrs McConechy, and Drama Teacher, Mrs Dougherty, who run the Outdoor Education Committee, for all their hard work in ensuring pupils are green-fingered!

Fairtrade Award

The Junior School has been awarded the FairAware Award from the Fairtrade Foundation which recognises schools that are supporting Fairtrade.

This award demonstrates that the Junior School is part of a global movement where young people learn that whatever their age, they have the power to make a difference in the world!

94.3% Pass rate in 2023 Higher examinations

Commemoration & Thanksgiving Service

Our annual Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving took place at Glasgow Cathedral on Thursday 21st September. This was a memorable way to bring together the School community as we approach the School’s 900th anniversary, as well as acting as the perfect send-off prior to the September weekend. Our grateful thanks go to Rev Timothy Sinclair of Partick Trinity Church for his Address.

2023 SQA Exams

High School pupils achieved an impressive set of SQA exam results back in August.

Highlights included a 98.3% pass rate at National 5, an average of 4.7 Highers passed per pupil, and 40 Advanced Higher candidates gaining three or more ‘A’ grades.

Out and About!

Many High School pupils spent the early part of the Autumn Term out and about on exciting trips. Transitus pupils experienced joie de vivre on their annual excursion to Normandy (right, top), whilst their senior counterparts visited the south of France for a rugby tour in Biarritz.

Closer to home, Advanced Higher Geographers ventured south to carry out fieldwork in the Lake District, whilst National 5 pupils visited sunny Millport. Our scientists followed suit, with a joint Advanced Higher Biology and Higher Environmental Studies trip across the Firth of Clyde (right, bottom), with a Fourth Year group also carrying out research in Lunderston Bay. Make sure you follow our social media platforms to keep up-to-date on school trips and all the exciting day-to-day examples of the joy of learning!

Fundraising Star

Teddy, our Junior 5 superstar, walked 10km to raise money for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity in September. After receiving treatment following a recent illness, Teddy, alongside his mum, decided to take part in the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity Sponsored 10km Walk. He smashed through his £500 target, going on to raise an incredible £2,895 for the charity. Well done Teddy!

WFA Award

We were delighted to be recognised by the Western Front Association recently, as the first recipient of their newly introduced Quality Mark.

The School achieved this under the leadership of our Principal Teacher of History, Mr Chris Mackay.

Summer Sporting Updates

Here are a few tidbits from a memorable summer for some of our young sporting stars!

Congratulations to the 1st XI Cricket team who were selected as the Forty Club Scotland District Team of the Year for 2023. They will receive their award at the Annual Dinner at Lords on Friday 17th November.

Amy (S5) competed for Scotland at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago during the summer, running well in the 3000m event, while Aania (S4) represented the Scottish Netball U15 side at the National Academies Tournament in Wolverhampton, receiving the coaches award for Player of the Tournament.

Luisa and Lucas (both S3) (pictured right) competed at Wimbledon this summer as part of the LTA ‘Play Your Way to Wimbledon’ National Finals, with Lucas making it all the way to the final before unfortunately losing out to a fellow Scot. Lucas also competed for the Scotland U14s team at the Junior Four Nations Championships. He won all of his singles matches, helping the team achieve success in the U14 category as Scotland were crowned Junior Four Nations Champions.

Rory (S5) competed in the U16 ‘Race the Worlds’ Event in early August, part of the 2023 UCI World Cycling Championships in Glasgow. Despite crashing on the start line, Rory was cheered round the course by an enormous crowd in the centre of Glasgow, fighting back to finish in the top 10!
