Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Report

Summer Camp 2019

In June the High School of Dundee Contingent returned to Penally in South Wales for our annual summer camp. The weather proved to be somewhat less challenging than we had experienced the previous year. However, as expected, the cadets thrived on all the challenges they encountered and demonstrated considerable grit and resilience as well as an indomitable spirit. These challenges included a 36-hour survival and tactical exercise along with full bore shooting, adventure training and leadership activities. We were accompanied this year by our Rector elect, Mrs. Lise Hudson.

Annual Inspection 2019

Rewind towards the start of the year in March where we realised an exciting opportunity to formalise an already existing affiliation we have with Tayforth Universities Officer Training Corps where we share staff, resources and leadership opportunities. As a result Lt. Colonel Jarvis, the Commanding Officer of Tayforth U.O.T.C., conducted our annual inspection. The inspection report by Lt. Colonel Jarvis stated “It was a pleasure and a privilege to be asked to visit the Dundee High School CCF. The CCF should rightly consider themselves as one of the ‘jewels’ in the School’s crown.” Armistice Parade 2019

The School marked Remembrance with its traditional Armistice Parade and Service on Friday 8th November. In tribute to all those members of the High School community and beyond who have died in all armed conflicts, the CCF and Pipe Band completed a parade in front of the School, which was watched by pupils, staff, parents, Former Pupils, members of the public and guests – including military and civilian service personnel. During the

ceremony a wreath was also placed in front of the War Memorial by Head Boy, Lewis Byers, and Deputy Head Girl, Eilean Mauritzen, whilst in a poignant moment in the proceedings Flowers o’ the Forest was played by Pupil Pipe Major, Craig Gunn. Rededication of the War Memorial 2019

In recent years, the School became aware of a number of staff and Former Pupils who served during the First World War but who were missing from the original War Memorial Roll of Honour, which was initially dedicated in April 1921. Following further research by the School, a total of 84 names have been uncovered including 24 men who died in combat during the Great War. Additionally, a central aim of the research was to address the fact that women who had been involved in the war effort had not been recognised on the Memorial. To date, the School has identified 14 female FPs who served their country during WW1. Six new panels were designed and produced by the School’s Technology & Art Departments to accommodate these new names and were added to the oak monument which was rededicated by the Very Revd Jeremy Auld, the Revd Caroline Taylor and the Very Revd Kevin Golden in a special ceremony in November.

Summary

One hundred years on and the contingent is thriving, rising to challenges and developing team players and leaders as well resilient, robust and confident individuals. I take great pride in my involvement in the past 25 years of DHSCCF and look forward to hopefully seeing many of our Former Pupils and the wider High School community continue to attend our CCF events, such as the annual Armistice Parade in November.

Lt. Colonel Colin R. McAdam, Officer Commanding DHSCCF 1994-present
