Some may have formed opinions based on what they have seen in the media, while others may have personal connections through family members or previous experiences with fraternities and sororities. Meet the Councils College Panhellenic Council (CPC)

The College Panhellenic Association (CPC) is the governing body for our six National Panhellenic Conference sororities. At High Point University, CPC prides itself on being the largest community for women where the promotion of leadership, academic excellence, and philanthropic efforts are at the forefront. Through various programs and events, the CPC encourages personal growth, friendship and a strong sense of sisterhood among its members.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing body for our five North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities. At High Point University, IFC prides itself on being a tight knit community promoting brotherhood above all. The IFC empowers students to serve their community outside of individual organizations through leadership positions and leading the direction of the community.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at High Point University, also known as the "Divine 9," serves as the governing body for historically Black Greek Lettered Organizations.

Rooted in legacy and purpose, NPHC promotes unity, scholarship, and service. NPHC members are trailblazers— preparing to impact the world long after their time at High Point.

United Greek Council (UGC) The United Greek Council (UGC) at High Point University serves as the governing body for culturally based fraternities and sororities. UGC organizations foster inclusive communities, celebrate cultural heritage, and empower members to lead through service, education, and campus engagement.

How To Join

Recruitment & Intake Processes

The recruitment and intake process at High Point University allows students to learn about and join fraternities and sororities within the Fraternity and Sorority Life community. Each council and organization has its own process designed to help students explore values, build connections, and determine organizational fit. Students are encouraged to attend events, engage with members, and learn more about each chapter’s mission and culture.

Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment Sororities affiliated with the National Panhellenic Conference participate in a structured primary recruitment process in the Fall, allowing potential new members to visit each chapter and engage in a series of organized events.

Men's Fraternity Recruitment Fraternities within the UGC and IFC participate in a recruitment process offered in both the fall and spring, providing potential new members opportunities to explore chapters, attend events, and connect with members in a flexible format.

NPHC & UGC Membership Intake Fraternities and sororities of UGC and NPHC participate in membership intake.

This process is organized by chapters and does not occur as regularly as other recruitment processes.

NPHC & UGC Intake

Membership intake for organizations within the National Pan-Hellenic Council and United Greek Council at High Point University is a structured process through which fraternities and sororities select, educate, and initiate new members who align with their organizations’ values, traditions, and missions. Each organization determines the semester in which intake will occur, and while many organizations conduct intake each academic year, some may choose not to hold an intake process during a particular semester or academic year.

Tips for Interests 1. Research and Learn about all organizations - You may already have an idea of which organization interests you most, but it is important to research all organizations because you may discover a stronger connection with one you had not initially considered.

2. Ensure your personal values align with the organization - Each organization has its own principles, traditions, and approach to achieving similar goals. Make sure you are selecting an organization based on your personal values, interests, and long-term fit.

3. Get to know members of the chapters - Building relationships with current members can help you better understand the chapter’s culture, expectations, and values. Engaging with members also provides insight into whether the organization is the right fit for you.

Prospective New Members Before beginning the recruitment or intake process, students must meet the following baseline expectations. Individual chapters may have additional requirements.

University Requirements Academic and conduct eligibility is mandatory. FSL confirms eligibility when a student signs up for recruitment or participates in an informational or rush event.

• GPA Requirements: ◦ Returning Students: Minimum 2.75 college GPA (not combined with high school). ◦ First-Year Students: Minimum 2.75 High School GPA • Student must be enrolled in at least 12 credits • Conduct Status: Students on Disciplinary Probation are ineligible • Completion of Hazing and Alcohol Education Modules • Individuals interested in intake-based organizations must attend CBFO 101 Important: No exceptions to these standards will be granted, except for specific major-based requirements (e.g. Nursing). Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee membership. Selection processes vary and are competitive in some organizations.

New Member Bill of Rights

As prospective new members, you have the right to a safe, respectful, and transparent experience as you explore fraternity and sorority life.

1. The Right to Physical & Psychological Safety a. In accordance with NCGS § 14-35, every new member has the right to be free from any activity that risks physical or serious psychological injury.

You have the right to not be subject to any hazing activity.

2. The Right to Dignity & Respect a. High Point University defines hazing as any action that "jeopardizes a student’s psychological, emotional, and/or physical well-being regardless of the person’s willingness to participate."

3. The Right to Transparency & Information a. High Point University defines hazing as any action that "jeopardizes a student’s psychological, emotional, and/or physical well-being regardless of the person’s willingness to participate."

4. The Right to Recourse & Reporting a. You have the right to report any behavior that makes you feel unsafe or undervalued without fear of retaliation.

If You Have Concerns

If your rights are not being upheld or you feel uncomfortable at any point, we encourage you to report concerns immediately.

Financial Breakdown

Being a member of a sorority or fraternity is a rewarding experience that also involves a meaningful financial commitment.

WHAT IS COVERED BY MEMBERSHIP DUES?

Chapter dues cover different experiences and resources, but each chapter manages finances differently. Be sure to ask what’s included; some offer all-inclusive dues, while others have additional out-of-pocket costs. Dues may cover items like insurance, national fees, events, apparel, and philanthropic contributions.

The university owns and operates 11 Greek properties within Greek Village. The average cost to live in a Greek Village property is $13,820.07 per semester, which includes both housing and meal plan expenses.

Residency in a chapter house is not required, and housing selection policies vary by organization.

Payment methods vary by chapter. Some require a one-time payment, while others offer semester or monthly plans

Chapter dues vary across chapters and councils. Be sure to ask questions to understand the specific costs and expectations.

No. At HPU, NPHC and UGC chapters do not currently have designated chapter houses. However, they remain active through programs, service, cultural engagement, and brotherhood/sisterhood development. Providing Greek housing for these organizations is a continued priority for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life as the community grows.

HPU Hazing Tolerance High Point University® (HPU) prohibits hazing and any conduct that aids, abets, assists, or supports hazing. Hazing is a serious violation of the University’s Code of Conduct as well as federal and state law. The purpose of this policy is to prevent hazing in all forms, promote the safety and wellbeing of the University’s students, and affirm the University’s commitment to a safe, inclusive campus environment that promotes belonging and wellbeing.

Hazing Definition

Any action or situation that involves potential members, new members, or active members with the goal of facilitating entry or affiliation, or performed as an expectation for maintaining active membership, status or standing within a recognized or unrecognized team or organization that jeopardizes the student’s psychological, emotional, and/or physical wellbeing. These actions or situations will be defined as hazing regardless of a person’s willingness to participate. Such acts or situations include: • Compromising a student’s ability to succeed by creating unreasonable expectations that disrupt academic performance, employment responsibilities, and/or essential personal commitments.

• Subjecting a student to emotional distress or social shame through actions intended to diminish their self-worth, dignity, or standing among peers.

• Forcing participation in activities that serve no constructive educational or team-building function.

• Imposing demands or conditions that far exceed the normal expectations of membership.

North Carolina State Law The State of North Carolina defines hazing in N.C. Statues 14.35-14.36 as “Subjecting a student to physical or serious psychological injury as part of an initiation, or as a prerequisite to membership, into any organized school group, including any society, athletic team, fraternity or sorority, or other similar group." Any violation constitutes a Class 1A Misdemeanor. State law requires that the faculty or governing board of a college or school to expel any student convicted of hazing in court.

Alcohol & Other Drugs HPU takes a proactive approach to alcohol and other drug education by emphasizing informed decision-making, harm reduction, and community accountability. Recognizing that misuse can negatively impact individual well-being and organizational success, the university promotes a culture grounded in responsibility, safety, and care for self and others. This commitment is reinforced through accessible education, prevention resources, and supportive interventions, with any concerns addressed collaboratively by the Offices of Student Life, Student Services, and University Police to determine appropriate response and support.

Frequently Asked Questions Q: What are the benefits of joining a Fraternity or Sorority?

A: The real question is, what isn't a benefit! Joining a fraternity or sorority opens a treasure trove of opportunities. Fraternities and sororities provide amazing opportunities to find lifelong friendships, hold leadership roles on institutional, regional and/or national level, and provide everlasting personal development.

Q: What effect will a fraternity/sorority have on my grades?

A: Scholarship is an important component when joining an organization.

Organizations are required by the University and National Headquarters (varies by chapter) to maintain a certain GPA. Most chapters have GPA requirements outside University requirements. This is why chapters offer academic programming to support their members to maintain their GPAs.

Q: What are the housing options once I join a fraternity/sorority?

A: HPU does offer Greek Housing! Currently, only IFC and CPC chapters are the only organizations with official campus housing. However, Greek housing is considered upperclassmen housing at High Point University.

There is no overall live-in requirement in Greek Village. Chapters determine their own process for filling their Greek Village property.

Q: Can I still be involved in other student organizations on campus?

A: Yes! Many of our chapters require members to also be involved in at least one other organization on-campus. Involvement with other student organizations will allow you to connect with others, run for leadership positions, and continue to add values in different areas of your life.

Q: What is my role as a family member?

A: We view family members as another support system for their student(s). One of the key components for the support is empowering students as they navigate the Greek experience. Encourage your student to gather as much information as possible before they make the decision to join a Greek organization.

Q: I am a legacy. What does that mean?

A: A legacy is a student with a family member already a member of a particular fraternity or sorority. Students are free to seek membership in any organization, and someone that is a legacy is not required to join a particular organization. Finally, every organization defines legacy differently and employs different legacy policies in membership selection.

Glossary Active: a member of a Greek organization who is currently enrolled as an undergraduate student Alumni: a fraternity or sorority member who has graduated or is no long in college.

Bid: formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority Big Brother/Sister: An active member assigned to be the personal mentor for a new mentor CBFO: Culturally Based Fraternal Organizations (CBFOs) are fraternities and sororities that promotes leadership, service, and community while centering cultural identity, heritage, and inclusion.

Chapter: A local group of the larger (inter)national organization, designated by a special Greek name.

Chapter Meeting: Meetings held on a regular basis to discuss chapter business Continuous Open Bidding (C.O.B.): A opportunity for sororities to invite potential new members to pledge their organization, any time after formal recruitment Crest: Insignia used by fraternity or sorority members. Most Greek organizations reserve the crest for initiated members only. Each crest has hidden, secret meanings behind it. Also known as a coat of arms or shield.

Crossed: The date on which an associate member crossed into a fraternity or sorority to become an active member. Usually, a term used in Culturally Based Fraternal Organizations.

Drop: The process where a new member elects or is asked to relinquish membership during their process/initiation period.

Dues: The monetary fees that members are required to pay to uphold membership of a Greek organization First Day Out: The first public appearance of a line often used by intake-based organization

Formal Recruitment: The formal process in which undergraduate students join a Panhellenic Council sorority of Interfraternity Council fraternity Founders Day: An event celebrated by fraternities and sororities to highlight the founding of their organization and celebrate its history.

Fraternity: A group of people, known as a brotherhood, sharing a common profession or interests.

Greek Family: The family tree of all great grand bigs, grand bigs, bigs, littles, grand littles, etc House Manager: A person who is hired to live in a sorority or fraternity chapter house to help advise them Initiation: formal ceremony during which a man or woman begin full membership in a fraternity or sorority.

Interfraternity Council: A Greek council comprised of 5 intercollegiate social fraternities Line: A CBFO term equated to a new member class. They are new members of the organization. Lines are often given names.

Legacy: The child or sibling of an individual who is currently or previously an active member in a sorority or fraternity.

National Panhellenic Conference: A Greek conference that is nationally comprised of 26 social sororities.

National Pan-Hellenic Council: A Greek council comprised of the nine historically African American sororities and fraternities that are also known as the “Divine Nine” or “D9” greek organizations New Member: A member of a sorority or fraternity that is fully initiated.

Glossary Order of Omega: A Greek life honors society for those with outstanding leadership and academics.

Potential New Member: Prospective individuals that active members are interested in potentially bidding Probate: The coming out or reveal of newly initiated or soon to be initiated members. This is presented by NPHC and UGC chapters only..

Quota: A set number of new members a sorority can extend bids to. Quota is determined by taking the total number of potential new members at Preference (sometimes from the second round of invitational parties, depending on the school), and dividing by the number of sororities.

Recharter: Process where a fraternity or a sorority that was previously on campus receives another charter for the same campus.

Ritual: A secret ceremony of a Greek organization. Also, the formal document that contains the secret principles and ideals upon which the organization was founded. Ritual elements are sacred to each fraternity and sorority and have been handed down through generations. Only initiated members may be privy to rituals.

Rho Gamma: A sorority member who leads a recruitment group (this is the practice of NPC). During recruitment, they disaffiliate from their sorority so that they will not bias the potential new members.

Soror: Another term used for “sister”; this is a term used by NPHC sorority members to acknowledge one another. Rarely used among NPC sororities Sorority: A group of people, known as a sisterhood, sharing a common profession or interests.

Stepping: A form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps and handclaps Stroll(ing): is an energetic, synchronized dance. Typically, NPHC Organizational members move together in a line expressing pride for their organization. In this line, members may express their pride through use of their organization’s call, sign or historical information, ritual/custom dances, etc. All of this is done through movements that are unique to a particular organization. It is also important to know that emulating or cutting in/through the line is considered a sign of disrespect.

Sweetheart: Sorority/fraternity member or non–Greek affiliated individual chosen and voted on to serve as a sweetheart of a fraternity or sorority. These people are usually chosen because of the work they have put in to help better the organization.

Total: The maximum number of members a sorority can have. Sororities can only exceed total during formal recruitment

Rush: The formal process in which undergraduate students join an Interfraternity Council fraternity.

Sands: An NPHC term for members of your new member class or Greeks who became members the same semester. Comes from the phrase “cross the burning sands” which means to cross over (become initiated) into full membership.
