2024 — 2025
THE DAVID R. HAYWORTH
SCHOOL OF ARTS AND DESIGN

Welcome Message From The Dean
2024-2025 was a banner year for the David R. Hayworth School of Arts and Design in so many ways thanks to the support of the administration and friends like you. I am going to focus primarily on additions to the faculty. The Dance program, under the leadership of Lindsey Howie, has grown significantly in number of majors, minors, and students participating in our dance performances. After shouldering the responsibility as the only full-time faculty member, Howie will be joined by Christine Stevens, our new Instructor of Dance. Ms. Stevens has been an ardent adjunct for quite some time, and we are delighted to have her as a permanent member of our team. Oh, and did I mention the new dance studio at College Village?! This satellite studio will provide much needed space for our students to rehearse their routines for concerts and capstones.
Another faculty addition that is long overdue comes in the interior design program. Current faculty have worked tirelessly to cover the necessary courses in the major. This past spring we were able to hire Ms. Pamela Lindeback (MFA, Florida State University). She brings years of professional experience and a particular interest in design that helps those in crisis. She will join our other most recent new faculty member, Ms. Kathy Hedrich, whose career in kitchen and bath design and expertise in sustainability will be a welcome addition.
The third new faculty member is for the Department of Music. A structural reorganization at HPU shifted the Pep Band from Athletics to the School of Arts and Design. Under the leadership of Drs. Foster and Meixner, HPU launched a national search for a new Assistant Professor of Music / Director of Athletic Bands. Dr. Mark Whitfield (DMA, University of Southern Mississippi), a trombonist, was selected amongst an impressive pool of candidates from across the United States. We look forward to the energy and excitement he will bring to the music program.
There is much more to celebrate, but I will let you discover those in the pages of this, our fifth annual In the Studio magazine. I want to thank Alishah Aamir—one of our 2025 Studio: Graphic Design BFAs—for her exquisite design talents in laying out the entire issue as well as Hays T. and Neil W. Howard for their sponsorship.

Fashion Merchandising Students Mentored by Alexander Julian

INTO the spotlight

High Point University expanded its all-star lineup of global leaders in the Access to Innovators Program by adding award-winning American design guru Alexander Julian. In March, Mr. Julian mentored fashion merchandising students in the Visual Merchandising Studio and Introduction to Fashion Merchandising class. After his presentation, “Personal Branding Through Adaptability”, a small group of students were treated to a lunch with Julian where they gained valuable insight into the fashion industries.
Julian, a distinguished member of The Fashion Hall of Fame, was its youngest inductee at the age of 33. He currently holds the title of emeritus director of both the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the International Design Conference. A six-time recipient of the American Menswear Designer of the Year Award, Julian has also been honored on the International Best Dressed List nine times.
Since the 2022-2023 season, High Point University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have proudly worn uniforms and warmups featuring Julian’s unique Pantherstooth designs. Notably, Julian is the first and only fashion designer to receive the American Society of Furniture Designers’ Pinnacle Award for his contributions to furniture design.

Art Students Inspired by World-Renowned Artist Monique Rollins
Internationally acclaimed contemporary artist, Monique Rollins, presented a guest lecture and provided individual critiques to the Painting I and II students in October. Rollins has successfully combined her love of art, business acumen, and entrepreneurial spirit in the founding of the John William Gallery. There, she built an international roster of artists and created the Emerging Curator Platform that includes a ground-breaking partnership with the Delaware Art Museum and the Museum Studies Program at the University of Delaware. The initiative supports students from underrepresented communities in the museum field, highlights the role of curators, and showcases the work of artists from historically marginalized groups in exhibition and collection programs.

Dr. Day, a unique voice in the world of classical music, draws inspiration from romanticism, late 20th-century music, jazz fusion, and gospel. He has received numerous accolades, including the Copland House Residency Award, the MacDowell Fellowship for Music Composition, the BMI Composer Award, being a three-time ASCAP Morton Gould Finalist, a finalist for the ABA Sousa-Oswald Award, a twotime finalist for the NBA Revelli Award, and the 3rd Prize Winner of the 2020 New Classics International Competition for Young Composers at the Moscow Conservatory.

“Bridging the gap between Shakespeare’s text and Musical Theatre texts in a context that we were familiar with was fantastic and brought so many eyeopening ideas that I had not thought of.
The comparison of the balcony scene and Maria from West Side Story was so cool.
American Pastorale
Thanks to the generous support of the Randall Johnson Guest Artist Endowment, the Department of Music had the honor of commissioning a composition titled American Pastorale for the HPU Wind Instrument Ensemble and Choir from award-winning composer, Kevin Day in celebration of HPU’s 100th anniversary. With text written by Kincaid Rabb, the composer and lyricist take the audience on an emotional journey as they train across America’s captivating landscapes. The world premiere on April 29 was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

Reilly Gallagher (Fashion Merchandising, 2026) was a Bridal Consultant Intern for Kleinfeld Bridal in New York City this past summer. During her internship, she had the opportunity to shadow experienced bridal consultants, learn the art of styling, as well as assist brides in finding their dream dresses. Additionally, she collaborated with the marketing team to create content for promotional videos and social media. In the spring Reilly completed her Fashion Design certificate from the Lorenzo de Medici Institute, a partner of High Point University’s Fashion Merchandising program.

Stuart Weitzman, the renowned shoe designer whose creations have graced the red carpet at the Academy Awards, provided HPU students with a unique insight into the fashion industry through his personal journey. He emphasized the importance of innovation, taking risks, balancing function and style, mentorship, and human-centered design. Students from Fashion Merchandising, Entrepreneurship, and Business gathered in the Francis Auditorium in Phillips Hall to absorb his life lessons. Some even had the opportunity to model shoes worn by celebrities at the Oscars!

High Point University interior design students installed their designs inside the J.H. Adams Inn, a historic High Point hotel where a special community partnership offers students real-world experience. Morgan Botwinick, Luca Reich and Davis Price consulted with the J.H. Adams Inn staff and won a competition for their redesign of a guest room in a French Country design theme. The opportunity to install and set up the room provided an experience that is difficult to recreate in the classroom. The final result will be enjoyed by guests and families visiting High Point University and the surrounding area.

SIX SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO ATTEND BIENENSTOCK FUTURE DESIGNERS SUMMIT

The annual Bienenstock Future Designers Summit offers students an immersive three-day educational and networking experience “designed to create an experience that inspires innovation in interior, furniture, and product design.” Six HPU interior design students were offered scholarships to attend this one-of-a-kind event that included other participants from across the nation. During the summit, the students participated in a 1-hour charrette led by Dean Turpin to design three pieces of furniture inspired by the objects in the Phillips Collection.
As someone who deeply values building connections, this summit allowed me to network with new people and explore diverse career paths that stem from studying interior design. This unforgettable experience has not only broadened my perspective but also reinforced my passion for pursuing a career in this industry.

MUSIC
SINGING FOR THE NATION

“Singing for a nationally broadcast Christmas special was a truly extraordinary opportunity. In my opinion, a choir’s goals should be to sing well, work hard, and spread a message. That is exactly what the Chamber Singers got to do and I was more than honored to be a part of it.
HPU Choirs, under the direction of Dr. Marc Foster, chair of the Department of Music, celebrated Christmas with the nation by performing carols on two separate broadcasts. Standing in front of the 70’ Christmas tree on the lawn of Roberts Hall, the Chamber Singers performed “Silent Night” during the “All-American Christmas Tree Lighting”. As Christmas drew near, families across the nation had the opportunity to watch A Serenade for Shepherds with programming that included HPU’s combined choirs.
Emma Longboat (Music, 2025)

Throughout the week I got to attend multiple different panels and presentations that expanded my knowledge as a future educator. I attended a presentation by Sean Neely about how to teach and accommodate students on the autism spectrum.

PERCUSSION STUDENTS COMPETE ON NATIONAL LEVEL
In November, Instructor Louis Raymond Kolker and students Aaron Jackson, Kelly Samz, Finn Gilbert, Marc Del Gallo and Joey Umina traveled to Indianapolis for the 2024 Percussive Arts Society International Convention. They competed with 29 other groups in the Concert Chamber Percussion Ensemble category. Additionally, the students enjoyed concerts, clinics, panels and presentations by artists from all over the world. Mr. Kolker expressed his joy in seeing the students’ excitement about percussion and introducing them to members of their percussion family tree, including several of his teachers, friends, and mentors.

Louis Kolker’s Fountainesque is inspired by HPU’s fountains, a perfect metaphor for an institution’s stability and change over time.
HPUCO PERFORMS FOR STATE’S MUSIC EDUCATORS
The High Point University Community Orchestra was honored to perform a featured concert at the 2024 North Carolina Music Educators Association conference in Winston-Salem. The performance honored HPU’s centennial with two works written in 2024 by HPU music faculty, Dr. Margaret Petty (Festina) and Mr. Louis Raymond-Kolker (Fountainesque). The concert closed with Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome”, written in 1924, the year HPU was founded.

Margaret Petty’s Festina is a reflection of a student’s learning journey in three movements; make haste slowly, sit and ponder, joyful forward!

MELODIES ACROSS BORDERS: A MUSICAL JOURNEY THROUGH EUROPE
Faculty and students from the Instrumental Division toured Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic – performing concerts in Salzburg, Vienna, and Prague. The students experienced life on the road as a touring musician in an international setting. Further south, the HPU Choir toured Italy and performed concerts in Rome, Sorento, and Naples to sold-out audiences. They were in Italy when the Roman Catholic conclave voted to elevate Cardinal Robert Prevost to the papacy as Pope Leo XIV, the first United States-born pope in history. Both groups visited historical landmarks of cultural significance. The tour had great impact on the student’s education and provided lifelong memories. A lot of fun for all involved!

We were immersed in places where Beethoven, Mozart and others created their masterpieces. Being in their homeland gave me a rich perspective of their genius, seeing the world through their eyes.

SOPHOMORE JOEY UMINA SOARS!

Sophomore percussionist Joey Umina (Music Business, 2027) had a successful year, beginning with a 4-mallet marimba solo titled “Sunrise, on Canvas” at a UNCSA masterclass led by Professor Ji Hye Jung of Vanderbilt University, one of the world’s top marimba players. Later, Umina was accepted as a Composition-Performance Fellow for the 2025 Nief-Norf Summer Festival, a two-week event at UT-Knoxville focused on new and experimental music. As a Fellow, he will compose a piece to be premiered by other Performance Fellows and perform the world premiere of music by other Fellows. Additionally, he secured a Work-Study Fellow position, which is reserved for individuals with unique and proven experience in arts administration, technology, social media, and other relevant fields, and covers partial tuition.

THEATER & DANCE

2024-2025 Theater & Dance Season: A Reflection
The Department of Theater & Dance celebrates an exceptional 2024-2025 season that showcased the company’s artistic range and dedication. The Fall 2024 semester began with the emotional depth of “Steel Magnolias,” followed by our thought-provoking Fall Dance concert “Looking Back/Moving Forward,” and concluded with the heartwarming holiday tradition of “A Christmas Carol.” Spring 2025 continued our artistic journey with the inspirational “Milestones & Momentum” Spring Dance concert, the innovative musical adaptation “Alice by Heart,” and Shakespeare’s timeless comedy “Much Ado About Nothing.” Throughout both semesters, our students, faculty, and staff demonstrated remarkable talent, creativity, and growth while audiences experienced the transformative power of live performance. This season’s balance of classical and contemporary works reflects our department’s commitment to honoring theatrical traditions while embracing fresh artistic perspectives.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

Directed by Emily Rieder

In recognition of the university’s centennial, the dance faculty decided to revisit, rework, and restage previous works. The most ambitious piece, Structures of Power by Lindsey Howie, premiered in 2017. The 20-minute piece interprets where power comes from, who exercises power, and how power tends to affect individuals and groups of people. The work served as both a connection to the dance program’s artistic past and a demonstration of its continued evolution. The restaging proved that powerful choreographic works can find new life and meaning when revisited with fresh eyes and collaborative spirits.

Elijah Motley served as the guest choreographer for the Fall Dance Concert. His work, See the Light delves into how individuals interpret events experienced collectively. Motley explains, “The dancers in my cast were challenged to learn and perform various street dance forms (house, hip hop, and breaking), be vocal on stage, and partner with dancers they have never met prior to rehearsals.” Drawing from his extensive performance background across the United States and the United Kingdom, Motley’s choreographic approach challenged dancers to blend street dance forms with theatrical elements.

Bringing the Magic to Life
Technical Theater majors have many opportunities to expand their skills in stage management, scenic design, and lighting and sound design. Two of our graduating seniors took full advantage of these opportunities. Isabella Siegel (Theater, 2025) fell in love with the technical side of theatre as well as performing. She used her skills as a stage manager during her internships at Stagedoor Manor. “Leading a group of people to create art is thrilling. Stage Management gives me the knowledge to run any show big or small and deepened my love for theatre.” Jalen Bynum (Theater, 2025) assisted with the production of the set for Much Ado About Nothing learning numerous painting techniques, and designed the lighting for one of the dance concerts. “When designing the lighting, I focused on accentuating each movement and making sure the light supported and enhanced the narrative the choreographer envisioned. My goal was to ensure the lighting wasn’t just a backdrop, but an active part of telling the story through movement.”
Growth Creative through Expression
The dance capstone projects at High Point University represent significant milestones for graduating dance majors, providing them with transformative experiences that bridge academic training with professional artistry. These self-chosen projects challenge our students to develop their artistic voices and professional skills while preparing them for careers in dance. They learned to communicate effectively, manage complex projects, lead diverse teams, and adapt to unexpected circumstances. For most students, the capstone represented their first opportunity to have complete creative control over a dance production. Ultimately, these capstone projects facilitated profound personal and artistic growth. They walk away from these experiences with a deeper understanding of themselves.

Caitlin Black used her capstone to research professional dance opportunities with NBA and NFL teams, interviewing current dancers and attending audition prep clinics. Black states that she “Gained confidence, improved choreography retention and adaptability, and learned more about what it’s like to be on a professional dance team.”

CENTERSTAGE DANCE MAJORS TAKE
Three dance majors had their choreographed works selected for presentation at prestigious venues. The Still Inspired Future Artists program provides young choreographers with a platform to explore the intersection of movement and visual art. Mary Gomez (Dance, 2025) collaborated with Kinsey Gebhart (Art, 2025), drawing inspiration from Gebhart’s sculptures for her final composition Metamorphosis. Caroline Cubas (Dance, 2025) created True North, which paid homage to her sister’s painting titled “Aurora.” Gomez and Cubas were among 17 choreographers chosen nationwide.
Monica Kepins (Dance, 2026) choreographed “Timelapse” during a challenging period in her life when she was struggling to balance college, work, and personal responsibilities. This experience led her to explore how our perception of time can vary depending on our life circumstances, even though time itself remains constant. Kepins aimed to have every movement mimic clockwork mechanics while experimenting with symmetrical spatial patterns. The American College Dance Association (ACDA) selected “Timelapse” for presentation. Although initially intimidated, Kepins gained valuable insights, not just for her piece, but also for future works.

CREATIVE COLLABORATIONS CURATORIAL
Presented in the Sechrest Gallery in early 2025, A Reassurance of Repetition featured ceramics and drawings by North Carolina artist and educator Will Hinton curated and installed by upper-level Museum Studies students that provided them an important opportunity to engage in hands-on, experiential learning. The work of seniors Abi Craig, Darius Cummings, Lila Davis, and Lindsey Conway brought Hinton’s pieces to life in the Sechrest Gallery, showcasing not only the artist’s deep connection to repetition and the natural world but also the students’ dedication and creativity. This project, sparked by conversations with artist-in-residence Monique Rollins, offered students a chance to develop essential curatorial skills and gain firsthand experience in producing a professional exhibition.

CREATIVE MINDS IN ACTION

Everything I learned in the program applied to all aspects of my life: my confidence and interpersonal skills flourished with classroom critiques, and I worked hard to explore every single design opportunity presented to me.
With a passion for sports, Aidan Dietrick, a member of HPU’s first class (2024) of BFA: Studio (Graphic Design) graduates, forged her career path in the sports industry having interned with Charlotte FC and the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was no surprise that she landed her dream job with the New York Islanders as one of their Graphic Designers. Several of our 2025 graduates are following in her footsteps having identified the exciting opportunities sports teams can offer.

Art Students Exhibit at Bellwethers
Students in High Point University’s Art program had works accepted into the Bellwethers 2024 show at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Bellwethers is a regional juried exhibition of collegiate student art held annually. Senior Art major Katy Chisholm exhibited Rooster a large format linoleum cut print that she completed in Professor Raynor’s Printmaking II course. Senior Art major Samantha Purdon exhibited her oil painting titled Still Life with Fruit.

“Having my work accepted into the juried exhibition was incredibly meaningful for me. This was a challenging large-scale print to create and to have my hard work recognized by the jurors makes me proud.

High Point University’s Department of Art and Graphic Design is proud to be home to the Theta Nu chapter of Kappa Pi, the International Art Honor Society. The 2025 class of initiates represents an outstanding group of students who earned this recognition through their academic performance and the submission of professional portfolios, reviewed by a faculty panel. To maintain membership, these students must uphold a GPA above 3.0 and remain active, engaged contributors to the department’s community. In addition to the honor of induction, members gain access to scholarships, grants, and a robust alumni network that spans more than 250 colleges and universities. Congratulations to the 2025 initiates!

Faculty Research Highlights

Recently retired music professor, Dr. Candice Burrows, has edited a book titled The History of American Music: An Exploration of Music From 1700s Through The 20th Century (Cognella). The text also comes with a workbook and exercises to enhance student learning.
Dance faculty members Lindsey Howie and Michele Trumble presented their research at the National Dance Education Conference in Seattle in the Fall of 2024. Their session titled “Teaching Through Trauma: Roadblocks and Bridges” addressed critical gaps in dance education discourse. The research aims to reduce shame, examine vulnerability boundaries with students, highlight ways to find joy in the classroom despite difficulties, and share practical tools for maintaining student engagement when instructors face physical limitations.

“I

GRAD SCHOOL BOUND!
Few students know that they are going to pursue graduate degrees once they start college. At HPU, the faculty expose students to a wide range of experiences to help them identify their passion. Whether it be a specific lecture, an opportunity to work in the Sechrest Gallery or at the High Point Market, or a study abroad experience, these moments can, and do, change the lives of students, thrusting them on a trajectory that is fueled by a once hidden passion.

“In the department, I was given the opportunities to work in a professional museum space in the Sechrest. Syracuse was also very interested in my Graphic Design background.”

“I discovered my passion for healthcare design early at HPU, drawn to its blend of creativity and problem-solving. With parents in the medical field and my own experience with cancer at 15, I see it as a powerful way to give back through purposeful design.”
