EMPLOYED OR CONTINUING EDUCATION WITHIN 180 DAYS OF GRADUATION + A STUDENT SUCCESS COACH!

MESSAGE FROM THE UNIVERSITY PROVOST

High Point University is proud of its historic commitment to a liberal arts education that furnishes our graduates with the broad knowledge, transferable skills, ethics and values they will need to become accomplished and responsible citizens. With small classes, caring professors and a myriad of student success stories, we have positioned our university as a place for scholars to thrive. The array of majors is vast, and each has been uniquely designed to challenge, inspire and transform students. Twenty-first century education faces challenges that were unheard of a generation or two ago. Colleges and universities must adapt to patterns of work and life in which most graduates will leave their first job within three years. Within five years, more than half of today’s college freshmen will work in jobs that do not currently exist, just as “social media director” and “cloud computing consultant” did not exist a decade ago. By focusing on the development of life skills, critical reasoning, research and communication skills, our liberal arts education provides an ideal preparation for today’s workplace, where employers increasingly search for workers who combine in-depth knowledge with excellent problem-solving and analytic capabilities. In both our general education core and our degree programs, students acquire and practice the knowledge, skills and attributes that are essential for success in today’s global economy. High Point University’s academic programs engage students in collaborative problem-solving, internships, community engagement, and research and creative works, in which students apply theory to practice, gaining valuable real-world experience. In addition, HPU’s liberal arts education enriches our students’ lives by making them more aware of the rich variety of the human experience and more appreciative of the wonder and mystery of nature. A liberal arts and sciences education does not end with the graduation exercises at Commencement; instead, it engages a lifelong journey of learning, adapting and innovating values that accrue in a life well-lived. With the academic experience in the classroom, the experiential opportunities available and the university’s commitment to holistic, character-based life skills learning, our students receive an education that is unsurpassed.

PROJECT DISCOVERY NATIONALLY, AN ESTIMATED 50% OF STUDENTS ENTER COLLEGE UNDECIDED ON THEIR MAJOR. In addition, an estimated 75% of students change their major at least once before graduating. HPU’s Project Discovery provides the guidance and resources that students need to discover their passion and achieve their goals.

Check out the eight “Light Bulb” moments of Project Discovery — your guide to uncovering your academic passion.

It Starts

You aren’t the only student who entered college as undeclared — in fact, it is common across the entire nation! Sometimes we learn best from someone like us — a peer. FirstYear Navigators are HPU students selected by the Office of Student Success to mentor first-year students. As an undeclared student, you will be connected with First-Year Navigators who were once undeclared, too. They know exactly what you are going through and will help you explore your options.

Success Coach

As an undeclared student, you will partner with a Success Coach who is passionate about helping you discover a major that is a great fit for you, while helping you make positive connections with organizations on campus in which you have interest. This happens as early as the December before you enroll for early decision students, or the March before for regular admitted students. You will have support and guidance from a caring Success Coach who understands the various options available to you.

“What’s My Major?” Day

This event, hosted each semester by the Office of Student Success and the Office of Career and Professional Development, is a great opportunity to work with Success Coaches and Career Advisors to explore major and career options and discover the best fit for you!

Enroll in Exploring Your Major and Career Path, the one-credit course designed to help you explore your options. A Career Advisor will guide you through selfreflection and assessment tools such as PathwayU. You’ll also be able to connect with professionals in fields you are thinking about to ask thoughtful questions and learn more.

They conducted a mock interview with me that made an impact on me, and they helped me throughout the application process for my position at Fidelity. The Career Office helped prepare me for all the interviews and calmed me down. I would have never survived the interviews without them.”

THE ANATOMY OF A

SUCCESS COACH Students begin their time on campus in one of three ways. Some become unsure of their college major. That’s normal. In fact, more than half of all students nationally enter college undeclared. Others arrive confident in their major but soon begin to second-guess their choice. They relate to the 75% of students nationally who change their major at least once during college. Then, there are those who come in with a plan and stick to it. For each type, there’s an HPU Success Coach. All incoming freshmen at HPU have access to a Student Success Coach, a guide through their transitional journey into college life. Success Coaches help students narrow down their major, construct a path to achieve their goals and lend academic support when needed. Here’s a glimpse at the other important roles Success Coaches fill throughout a student’s freshman year at HPU.

LIFE COACH:

INNOVATIVE INSIGHTS

When incoming freshmen arrive on campus, they experience a variety of emotions. This is often their first time away from home and students feel the need to quickly find their place at HPU. Success Coaches answer that call. Success Coaches encourage students to find their own personal niche on campus and designate ways that students can apply and pursue their passions.

My Success Coach was my biggest mentor at HPU. He always made time to offer advice and push me to think bigger about my future. Having someone believe in me like that made a huge difference.”

UNIVERSITY LIAISON: Success Coaches help students make connections with faculty and staff on campus. They refer students to the Office of Career and Professional Development, Student Life, Counseling Services, Financial Aid and other offices on campus to ensure they receive the support and encouragement they need.

— Emily Haskell, Class of 2025, Associate Consultant at Oracle for Alithya, from Nashua, New Hampshire

ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR: Success Coaches assist in the implementation of programs and services designed to promote academic, personal, social and emotional success in each student. They encourage students to get involved in clubs, intramural sports or other campus activities to stay engaged beginning on day one.

Since 2005, HPU has grown from three academic schools to 14 academic schools — the Congdon School of Health Sciences, the David R. Hayworth School of Arts and Design, the David S. Congdon School of Entrepreneurship, the Douglas S. Witcher School of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, the Earl N. Phillips School of Business, the Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy, the Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law, the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication, the School of Optometry, the Stout School of Education, the Teresa B. Caine School of Nursing, the Wanek School of Natural Sciences, the Webb School of Engineering and the Workman School of Dental Medicine.

• Note that some majors require completion of course work in the first two semesters. • For some programs, failing or dropping a class may delay the student’s graduation due to the required sequencing of courses. • The four-year graduation guarantee ensures university requirements and requirements for a major can be completed in four years; students pursuing multiple minors or planning to double major — or pursue a double degree — may need longer than four years to complete all their requirements.

HPU has 64 undergraduate majors, 74 undergraduate minors and an ever-growing list of graduate degree programs. Learn more at www.highpoint.edu/academics.

All majors have access to the studio spaces and labs necessary to develop and hone their craft. Performing arts students present major works in our beautiful Pauline Theater and the Empty Space Theater for more intimate productions. The creative nature of our faculty has also inspired performances in the Sechrest Art Gallery, Caine Conservatory and the Culp Planetarium. Art and graphic design students create exhibitions of their work in the Sechrest, Norton and Deal galleries. Interior design and fashion merchandising students have the opportunity to work at the International Home Furnishings Market, held twice a year. At each market, more than 75,000 people and 2,400 exhibitors fill 160 showrooms and more than 10 million square feet of display space. Our location offers students opportunities for field trips to see industry in action and internships to gain real-world experience.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY Students studying in the School of Arts and Design have access to technology labs equipped with laser cutters, CNC routers and 3D printers, and the Anderson Creative Innovation Lab that gives students the ability to produce to-scale models of furnishings or products at a degree of detail tempered only by their imagination. They also have access to several Computer-Assisted Design labs, including a 20-plus station Mac lab with Cintiq interactive pen displays that introduce our students to programs like Sketch-Up, CAD, Revit and the Adobe Suite. 12

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AT ITS BEST The arts have been the model for experiential learning for centuries. The act of performing and creating is the foundation of our disciplines. At HPU, this happens in the classroom and beyond. For example, as part of a Global Experience course, music students traveled across Italy, performing at some of the country’s most renowned cathedrals and basilicas, including St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, while theater students have had the opportunity to work with Tony-nominated actor and playwright John Cariani on his newest project. Dance students choreograph works that are juried and presented at regional and national conferences. Interior design and fashion merchandising students have the opportunity to study in Florence for a full semester to complete certificates tailored specifically for High Point University and our graphic design students have had the honor of meeting with Milton Glaser and Paula Scher of Pentagram during their travels to New York City.

DARRELL E. SECHREST ART GALLERY The High Point University Darrell E. Sechrest Art Gallery is primarily an educational gallery that provides High Point University and the greater High Point communities with rotating exhibitions in a range of media. These exhibitions offer opportunities to interact with exhibiting artists and hear them speak about their work. Exhibitions involve solo displays from artists currently active in their fields as well as group shows and works from a variety of collections, including HPU’s Permanent Collection, that have a more historic purpose. All exhibitions, gallery talks and openings are publicized locally and regionally and open to the public.

CREATIVE ARTS FELLOWS PROGRAM The Creative Arts Fellows Program provides students a four-year, experiential, team-based scholastic experience with like-minded students. Working with a dedicated director of the program, students are provided personal mentoring, networking, travel and opportunities to learn about careers in the ever-changing arts world from scholars and practitioners. The programming is threefold, focusing on community building (personal and professional), experiential learning and leadership development — culminating in a well-rounded graduate who can differentiate him/herself in the public sphere.

FACULTY AND STAFF

Dr. Jane Nichols, professor and chair of interior design, is an award-winning interior designer who brings more than 20 years of experience into the classroom. A gerontologist, she continues to research and design commercial interiors for healthcare, aging and hospitality environments.

STUDIO ART The department offers two degrees focused on studio art. The B.F.A. in general fine arts is a professional degree that prepares the student for a career as an artist in a medium of their choice. The B.A. in studio art gives the student a broad exposure to art that offers flexibility for those students seeking to combine a minor or other major to help them reach their individual career goals. Classes range from sculpture, painting, ceramics and digital art to darkroom and digital photography. The faculty focus on a one-on-one approach to develop each student’s artistic and expressive abilities.

GRAPHIC DESIGN The department offers two degrees focused on graphic design. The B.F.A. in studio with a concentration in graphic design is a professional degree and recommended for those seeking careers in the field of graphic design, while the B.A. in design studies, concentration in graphic design, exposes students to essential core courses but offers flexibility to those students seeking to combine a minor or other major to help them reach their individual career goals.

FASHION MERCHANDISING The fashion merchandising major within HPU’s School of Arts and Design provides a blend of cross-disciplinary courses in order to provide students with both creative and analytical skill sets to prepare them for entry-level positions in the fashion retail sector. INTERIOR DESIGN The interior design program is challenging, rigorous and rewarding. Students graduating from the program are well-versed in a wide vocabulary of design concepts and have the problemsolving skills to apply that knowledge in the field. Many students have gone on to work for some of the biggest names in the interior design and furniture fields, ranging from Interior Architects (IA) to Gensler. The interior design program creates opportunities for students to be exposed to other designers and artists. Designers Libby Langdon and Barclay Butera, among others, come into HPU’s classrooms to share their firsthand knowledge and offer insight to students for their future careers. Opportunities proliferate beyond the International Home Furnishings Market and HPU’s campus. Students are able to study interior design with partner universities in Florence, Italy, to provide a global edge to this extraordinary degree.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

RESEARCH ROOKIES Designed for freshmen and first-semester sophomores, HPU’s Research Rookies Program introduces students to the skills and practices that shape meaningful research and creative scholarship. The program creates a community of aspiring undergraduate scholars while helping students build a foundation for collaborating with faculty on work that provides an original contribution to their fields. Dr. Joanne Altman, director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works (URCW), created the program to teach students how to not only go about getting involved in research opportunities but also how to become active researchers. “The goal of the program is to prepare them to be ready to research; they’re entering the culture of research and learning how to embark on these opportunities,” Altman says.

THE RESEARCH ROOKIES EXPERIENCE Students work in the lab with Dr. Bill Kochen, professor and founding chair of neuroscience, to investigate the effects of dehydration and creatine on mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), also known as concussions. This research is especially relevant to combat athletes, such as martial artists, who often dehydrate to cut weight and take creatine to enhance performance. Shortly after weigh-ins, these athletes regularly suffer concussions during their matches. Kochen’s research with his students explores whether dehydration or creatine use before injury can change how a concussion affects an athlete.

Through a series of activities and conference experiences, Research Rookies students see firsthand what it takes to develop and present original work. “Research projects get our students thinking critically,” Altman says. “These students are demonstrating their depth of knowledge.”

52

DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU’RE AN UPPERCLASSMAN TO START CONDUCTING RESEARCH From day one on campus, HPU students can engage in rigorous, high-quality research experiences through Research Rookies and summer research programs, an opportunity that most universities don’t offer to freshmen. Our research programs immerse students in the university’s culture of research and creative work, early in their undergraduate careers. These transformative experiences prepare students to excel in graduate study, professional careers and beyond.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN ACTION

Jordan Destafino, a Class of 2027 neuroscience and electrical engineering major from Mocksville, North Carolina, created a brain scanner from scratch using a bicycle helmet and everyday components. One challenge Destafino faced while developing his brain scanner was that it doesn’t work with hair. Although he thinks future versions can avoid that, he shaved his head as a simple solution just to continue testing and refining the project.

INNOVATIVE INSIGHTS

Health sciences students work with Dr. David Sinacore, professor of physical therapy, in the Human Biomechanics and Physiology Lab as part of his five-year $3.9 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant. They are studying the feet of individuals who have diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. The goals of the grant are to determine the impact of type 2 diabetes, peripheral neuropathy and various stages of chronic kidney disease on the foot.

The reason I went for this project is my goal of creating a device that will allow dogs to speak with humans in English, but it’s my first time building a brain scanner so it made sense to develop a simplistic version for humans that would grow my skills and provide insight to the upcoming challenges.” – Jordan Destafino, ’27, neuroscience and electrical engineering major

Summer research programs like SuRPS give students the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with HPU faculty in the research lab or in the field full time for eight weeks. Macie Fox, a Class of 2026 neuroscience major from Bertram, Texas, spent her summer studying three particular carbonic anhydrases, trying to ascertain their validity and stability by making proteins and characterizing them. In the Kean Lab, she learned techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry and structural biology. She said working on research over the summer was an experience that confirmed her goal of pursuing a doctorate degree in neuroscience.

INNOVATIVE INSIGHTS Natural sciences students worked with Dr. Briana Fiser, dean of the Wanek School of Natural Sciences, during the summer on engineering artificial cilia structures that are capable of moving fluids and also have the potential to serve as antibacterial or antifouling surfaces. “HPU is unique in that we allow and, in fact, highly encourage first-year and second-year students to participate in our summer research programs,” says Fiser.

GRACE PARIZEK

ACHIEVES HER MEDICAL SCHOOL DREAMS

Grace Parizek, Class of 2023, a biochemistry major from Johnstown, Ohio, was accepted to six medical schools and is attending Ohio University’s Heritage College of Medicine. Grace Parizek wanted to go to medical school but knew it was a competitive path. When searching for colleges as a high school student, she often worried, “Will I find the college that will help me, or will I be just another pre-med student who gets weeded out?”

I chose to attend High Point University primarily because I admired its values of God, family and country, and I believed that with its state-of-the-art facilities and personable faculty members, it was a place where I would thrive.”

After all, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reports that only about 40% of pre-med majors get accepted into medical school.

— Grace Parizek, ’23, Biochemistry Major

After visiting High Point University and meeting the faculty in the Wanek School of Natural Sciences, Parizek knew she had found the university that would help her become a doctor. The proof is in the results. Fast forward to the spring semester of her senior year, and the Johnstown, Ohio, native was preparing to head off to medical school thanks to her HPU education. “The class sizes were small enough that I knew my education would be personalized, with each faculty member taking the time to get to know their students and actively taking an interest in every individual’s education,” says Parizek. “With the chemistry department’s ACS (American Chemical Society) certification as well, I knew the academics would be rigorous enough to challenge me and make me a better student, especially when it came to taking the MCAT prior to applying to medical school.” Ultimately, Parizek’s HPU education and the experiences she amassed led six medical schools to accept Parizek. She is currently attending Ohio University’s Heritage College of Medicine. She says her HPU student experience made that possible by providing her hands-on involvement with research and boosting her selfconfidence while delivering presentations.

INNOVATIVE INSIGHTS Try to think of new ways to solve the old problems. Very often we look at something we have and say, ’I could make it better.’ That’s innovation. But you know what? Sometimes we say, ’I could do something totally different that makes things a lot easier for people,’ and that’s true invention.”

Dr. Pamela Lundin, assistant professor of chemistry, became Parizek’s most impactful faculty mentor. Parizek joined Lundin’s research lab for two years after hearing Lundin’s lecture about polymers, which are what form plastics, during an organic chemistry II class. HPU helped fund the opportunity for Parizek to present research at the spring National ACS meetings in both 2022 and 2023. Parizek also secured a summer research internship at the Orthopedic Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of patient care and medical services, in the summer of 2020. “While there, I worked with a current medical student to design a study on the safety and efficacy of posterior lumbar interbody fusions in the outpatient setting,” says Parizek. “Through this internship, I networked with medical students, and I learned about how to conduct research in a clinical setting.” Parizek says she has noticed the drastic change in her persona and sometimes reflects on who she once was and how much HPU has helped her flourish. “If High Point University had not provided me these opportunities to challenge myself to grow, I would not have become the person I am proud to look in the mirror and see every day,” says Parizek. “I know there is still much growth to be had; however, I am undeterred and excited for my future because HPU has instilled in me the skills necessary to excel in life. I am blessed and grateful to have called High Point University my home.”

BRYCE SMITH DISCOVERS HIS PASSION

HPU Class of 2023 graduate Bryce Smith, a physics and mathematics major from Evergreen, Colorado, reached for the stars when it came to research, leading to stellar career plans and a Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy. From spending his summer diving into research throughout HPU’s Summer Research Program in the Sciences (SuRPS) to seeking faculty mentorship – his experiences have paid off.

A lot of people think they know what they want to do but once they try it, they find out they don’t like it. So, being able to work on the telescopes in Chile and stay there allowed me to sample what that life is like. It helped me solidify that this is really what I want to do after I graduate.”

Already, the physics major from Evergreen, Colorado, has an incredible list of achievements under his belt. For one, he discovered a previously unknown star. Smith discovered what is a small, dense star known as a white dwarf. The discovery was a collaborative research effort between Smith, his HPU mentor, and astronomers at Boston University. His work was published in The Astrophysical Journal, one of the highest-ranked journals in astronomy and astrophysics, as a first and corresponding author.

— Bryce Smith, ’23, Physics and Mathematics Major

He joined faculty at an international conference in Belgium that attracts astronomers from around the world who study evolved stars like hot subdwarfs. Undergraduates rarely speak at conferences like this, yet Smith presented his research and received rave reviews.

When Smith was a freshman, he didn’t know the path he wanted to take. But when he found a faculty mentor, he found an interest in astrophysics. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, then I got to dive into astrophysics, and I really enjoyed it,” says Smith.

In November of 2022, Smith spent five nights at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, one of the premier astronomical observing sites in the world, observing at the 0.9-m SMARTS telescope. There, Smith participated in all aspects of observing, including opening the telescope dome at dusk, filling the camera’s dewar with liquid nitrogen, pointing the telescope, acquiring new data and working with Python code to analyze the data.

HPU has science professors all over the board in terms of their fields, so students have the opportunity to study just about anything they’re passionate about. “They have access to all of this incredible technology. I’ve gotten to use telescopes that are halfway across the world and then gotten to go where they are and use them in person,” according to Smith.

Smith was in the Honors Program, Society of Physics Students, Alpha Phi Omega (the service fraternity) and Charcoal Pony (HPU’s improv troupe).

INNOVATIVE INSIGHTS

His advice for underclassmen? “Try everything. Get experience in different areas and don’t look back. That goes for research and social opportunities, too. Don’t sit in your dorm every night. There’s always something to do, whether that’s playing club or intramural sports or joining one of the many organizations on campus.”

Experiences are transformational. In the hands of a gifted teacher, an experience can change the way you see, feel, think and act. There is not a greater superpower that a teacher has than an experience. When strong connections are formed through meaningful experiences, you get purpose-driven engagement.”

Smith is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

A TRAILBLAZING ENGINEER Emily Lattanzio, ’23, was a member of HPU’s inaugural class of engineering graduates. She went on to pursue her master’s degree in computer engineering and is now an embedded software engineer at Sturdy Corporation. Emily Lattanzio has accomplished a lot of firsts. In May 2023, she was a member of High Point University’s first class of engineering graduates and the first woman to complete the program. She was also at the top of her class. You could say Lattanzio is the epitome of a trailblazer.

I have always believed that every day we must choose to be the best version of ourselves. Coming to HPU, with its Choose to Be Extraordinary call to action, I knew I had found a place that held similar values.”

As a college freshman from Oyster Bay, New York, she was unsure of her major. But she found all the right connections after she plugged into HPU’s Webb School of Engineering.

— Emily Lattanzio, ’23, Computer Engineering Major

Many resources helped Lattanzio build her future. The Office of Career and Professional Development helped her figure out that engineering was the right path for her. She also found faculty mentors in the Webb School of Engineering who pushed her to be her best and supported her in all endeavors.

of Technology. Those experiences resulted in her achieving three publications, one of which she was a first author for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a professional association for electrical engineering, electronics engineering and related disciplines.

Getting to know Apple Computer Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, starting in her freshman year, offered another unmatched connection. Wozniak serves as HPU’s Innovator in Residence, regularly working with students in all majors, including engineers.

Lattanzio also loved working in HPU’s state-of-the-art labs while on campus.

“It was always great meeting someone who is so knowledgeable in my field and has had so much success,” says Lattanzio. “I got to learn about his passions for technology design and how his love of engineering has shaped his life. He is also so knowledgeable about the current limits of computer processing, and it was great discussing with him where we think we will see developments in the future.”

“From our circuits/electronics labs to the Maker Space, the Webb School of Engineering has so many great pieces of equipment that not all schools have,” she says. “From my sophomore year, I was learning how to use multimeters and oscilloscopes to analyze the circuits that I built. The labs here allowed me to have many hands-on experiences, which helped me learn the applications of the content I was taught in class.” In addition to presenting her research at the 13th International Green and Sustainable Computing Conference and the IEEE 19th Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference in 2022, Lattanzio worked alongside two classmates in a year-long capstone project to build an electronics system for a smart walker to relay an alert if a person with disabilities experiences a fall. That’s just one example of how she has used her expertise to help others.

Lattanzio gained hands-on experience by participating in two summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) funded by the National Science Foundation. Her first summer research project was at the University of Missouri and her second was at New Jersey Institute

INNOVATIVE INSIGHTS

“My engineering classes taught me all about the field that I was interested in, and my honors classes taught me new ways to think about the world,” says Lattanzio. “These two programs shaped my entire college experience.”

Everyone has the potential to become an encourager. You don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to be a genius. You don’t have to have it all together. All you have to do is care about people and initiate.”

Lattanzio says the life skills, values and virtues she developed at HPU helped prepare her for long-term success.

STRICKLER SISTERS A CONQUER TRAILBLAZING CAREER GOALS ENGINEER HPU Class of 2023 graduates Lauren and Sloan Strickler launched their careers by joining Georgia-Pacific in Atlanta with their Jumpstart Associate Program. The fraternal twins from Newburyport, Massachusetts, headed south after graduating from High Point University to make a double impression with one of the world’s largest manufacturers of paper and pulp products, Georgia-Pacific in Atlanta, Georgia.

HPU provides its students with many resources

to help prepare them for success. From providing me with countless mentors to numerous learning labs, HPU ensures that its students are supported with anything they might need to achieve their goals. Through internships, leadership positions and access to the incredible individuals who make up our In-Residence faculty, I have been able to learn things I can apply to my career as HPU has prepared me for the world to be, not just how it is today.”

Lauren and Sloan Strickler agree HPU prepared them for the 12-to-18month Jumpstart Associate Program, where they rotate through three different sectors of the company before joining one of many teams within Georgia-Pacific. During her junior year, Lauren had the opportunity to record a Q&A session with Domino’s Pizza CEO Russell Weiner. “This opportunity allowed me to engage with Russell Weiner on a deeper level, and I was able to learn so much about his background, his progression throughout his career, as well as his advice and wisdom that I’ve taken with me through my time at HPU. It allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and stretch myself to succeed in a new area, which gave me a newfound confidence. Fast forward to my senior year when he returned to campus, I was able to reconnect with him and talk about future plans. He has become a mentor to me and is an individual who I’ve been privileged to build a relationship with,” says Lauren. Sloan, who majored in finance and sales, says HPU helped her achieve her goal to become successful and confident in every opportunity she takes and build relationships that last. For example, she recalls Dr. Oliver Stoutner, an assistant professor of management and director of HPU’s Business Fellows Program, invited her to attend a dinner at 1924 PRIME with Ed Hajim, an author and Wall Street executive with more than 50 years of investment experience. She discovered Hajim was the founder of Nantucket Golf Club in Nantucket, Massachusetts. After connecting with him personally and professionally, she asked him for advice. Hajim told her, “Travel, do something different, work at the Nantucket Golf Club.” She applied the next day. As a result, she interned

INNOVATIVE INSIGHTS The way that I think to come up with big ideas is through the process of tensions. It’s a genuine coiled-up discomfort that holds a lot of power if you release it. If you can come up with a message that addresses a tension in your brand, in society or even better, when they are together, and if you can break that tension, that is kind of a tailwind for you.” –R ussell Weiner, HPU’s Corporate Executive in Residence

there for the summer, delivering customer service and relationship management, while building relationships with some of the world’s top executives. “My goal while at HPU was to meet as many people as I could and build lasting relationships, and I can confidently say, Mr. Ed Hajim is now a close mentor and friend of mine, thanks to HPU,” says Sloan. Sloan also achieved her goal set during high school to intern with CBRE, one of the world’s largest commercial real estate firms. Senior management selected her as a member of its Multifamily Capital Markets Team and entrusted her with oversight of the company’s development pipeline to identify new growth opportunities. Both Lauren and Sloan agree that leadership was one of the many life skills refined while at HPU. “Hard work, curiosity and initiative are just some of the life skills and values that HPU has helped me develop in preparation for long-term success. Curiosity and a love of learning have helped drive me both inside and outside of the classroom,” says Lauren. Sloan also believes that the life skills she learned at HPU opened opportunities, and knowing how to leverage them ensures lifelong success. “As a business student you are exposed to endless opportunities to help build your life skills, build rapport, challenge yourself, learn from executives and professors who have their own success stories and much more. I will be a lifelong ambassador for what this university has to offer, and I will continually give back to the HPU community that has given me so much,” says Sloan. 62
