BRAND GUIDE

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY BRANDING At High Point University, our commitment to preparing students for lives of success and significance is rooted in a distinctive combination of innovation, experiential learning, and strong values. HPU provides students with opportunities to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom, develop meaningful professional connections, and gain life skills that prepares them for the world as it is going to be. This distinctive educational experience is central to the High Point University brand and reflects our commitment to preparing students to lead purposeful and impactful lives.. As High Point University continues to grow in national recognition, every interaction with our brand must communicate a consistent and distinctive identity. The name High Point University is a foundational and strategic element of that identity and must be presented consistently across all University communications and materials. Our name is one of our most recognizable and distinguishing brand assets. For this reason, consistent and intentional use of the University name is essential to protecting the strength, recognition, and integrity of the High Point University brand.

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY’S OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MANAGEMENT AND PROTECTION OF THE UNIVERSITY’S BRAND, INCLUDING ITS FEDERALLY REGISTERED AND ESTABLISHED-BY-USE TRADEMARKS. THE OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS HAS FINAL AUTHORITY OVER THE INTERPRETATION, APPLICATION, AND ENFORCEMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY’S BRAND STANDARDS AND MAY MODIFY, APPROVE, OR DENY THE USE OF UNIVERSITY BRAND ELEMENTS AT ITS DISCRETION TO PROTECT THE INTEGRITY AND CONSISTENCY OF THE BRAND. THE STANDARDS OUTLINED IN THIS GUIDE ESTABLISH THE FRAMEWORK FOR UNIVERSITY BRANDING AND ARE SUBJECT TO THE FINAL DETERMINATION OF THE OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS.

BENEFITS OF HAVING A CLEAR BRANDING HIERARCHY: A clear and consistent brand hierarchy strengthens the High Point University brand and ensures that all University entities are presented as part of one cohesive institution. • Builds a consistent brand identity across schools, departments, offices, programs, and affiliated entities. • Creates clarity and recognition by making it clear how each entity relates to High Point University. • Protects the University’s reputation by ensuring that all brand expressions align with established University standards. • Strengthens recruitment and engagement by presenting a unified and recognizable identity to prospective and current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders. • Preserves the strength of the University brand by preventing the development of competing or disconnected identities.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BRAND LANGUAGE High Point University’s brand language is an essential part of maintaining a consistent and unified institutional identity. All schools, departments, offices, programs, and University-affiliated entities are expected to communicate in a manner that aligns with the University’s established brand voice, messaging, and strategic positioning. To protect the integrity and consistency of the High Point University brand, individual schools and departments should not create independent vision or mission statements that could establish a separate institutional identity. University messaging should reinforce the overarching mission, values, and identity of High Point University. This unified approach allows High Point University to present a clear, recognizable, and compelling voice across every audience and point of contact.

UNIVERSITY ENTITIES A clear and consistent brand hierarchy strengthens the High Point University brand and ensures that all University entities are presented as part of one cohesive institution. University entities, such as centers and programs, may not create separate brand guides or establish independent brand identities. All groups must use this guide as the foundation for their communications and visual materials. If a group develops a style guide to help its members properly use University-approved logos and brand elements, it should explain how the official High Point University brand is applied. For example: “To maintain consistency with the High Point University brand, the Center uses Adobe Garamond Pro in all communications.” Groups must maintain consistency with the University’s brand architecture. References to colors, fonts, logos, or other brand elements should identify them as University Brand Colors, University Brand Fonts, etc., rather than as the group’s own brand elements. Individual University entities do not have separate brands. Additionally, University schools, centers, departments, programs, and other entities may not establish separate mission or vision statements. These entities operate under the mission and vision of High Point University and should use University-approved language when communicating their purpose and role within the institution.

PRIMARY Innovation and Legacy Logos High Point University utilizes two distinct logos to represent different facets of its brand identity: the Innovation Logo and the Legacy Logo. While both marks are official and uphold the university’s standards, they serve different purposes and are used in different contexts. The Innovation Logo reflects the university’s modern, innovative spirit and is designed for broad, everyday use. It is the preferred mark for most communications, including marketing materials, digital platforms, and general university outreach. Its clean, contemporary design ensures versatility and strong brand recognition.

In contrast, the Legacy Logo honors High Point University’s tradition and formal heritage. It is reserved for ceremonial and official materials that require a more dignified and classic presentation — such as graduation programs, formal event collateral, and stationery.

CO-BRANDING High Point University’s branding policy discourages co-branding with other companies, groups, organizations, or slogans. This policy is in place to protect the university’s reputation, brand identity and values. The university’s branding policy also states that the university’s Logo and trademarks cannot be used without permission from the Office of Communications. This is to ensure that the university’s brand is used appropriately. By carefully managing its branding, High Point University can ensure that it is always associated with excellence and quality. Additional reasons why High Point University discourages co-branding: • Co-branding can be confusing to consumers. When two brands are presented together, it can be difficult for consumers to know which brand is responsible for what. • Co-branding can cause a brand to lose its unique identity, diluting its own brand. Unique instances when High Point University may permit co-branding include: • Student clubs or organizations may use the national or parent organization’s logo in conjunction with an approved High Point University logo. • Co-branding may be permitted for events hosted or sponsored by High Point University, including PREPARE+, Arbor Day, Prayer Breakfast, and Veteran’s Day. • Events or materials associated with athletic sponsorships may feature approved High Point University logos alongside official partners and sponsors. All university events that wish to co-brand must be approved by the events team. The use of HPU’s brand must be approved via the Office of Communications. Vendors are not permitted to use the University brand on their websites, or promotional items to promote their work with HPU, without formal permission. See Trademarks and Licensing at the end of this guide If High Point University is the location for another organization’s event, the full university name should be listed as the location but an approved university logo would not be used.

DIGITAL Presentations Internal and external presentation templates must always be used to communicate a consistent message to audiences. Additionally, following the tips below will enhance the visual impact and advance the High Point University brand.

PRESENTATION TIPS: 1. Use a sans serif font. 2. Choose a font size that your audience can read from a distance: • A one-inch letter is readable from 10 feet • A two-inch letter is readable from 20 feet • A three-inch letter is readable from 30 feet 3. Avoid using centered text unless making a simple statement. Text aligned left or right is easier to read and follow.

For approved powerpoint templates, please visit https://www.highpoint.edu/ooc/employee-resources/

4. Avoid clutter or too much information. Presentations should serve as a guideline to share information, not something that is read word-for-word.

DIGITAL Canva Templates Canva is a web-based design tool for those with little to no graphic design experience. It allows faculty, staff and students to create their own flyers, social media graphics, posters and more. The Canva for Teams platform at High Point University provides access to easy-to-use branded templates across all channels that are pre-approved and customizable. HPU maintains a limited number of Canva licenses. It is recommended that a department or group create a shared user name and password (example: communication@highpoint.edu) that is managed and distributed by a single administrator. Once logged in to the High Point University Canva team, the approved logos, patterns, colors, fonts, and templates are available.

TO ENSURE BRAND CONSISTENCY, FACULTY AND STAFF SHOULD NOT USE A PERSONAL CANVA ACCOUNT FOR UNIVERSITY MATERIALS. To request access to the HPU Canva account, email communications@highpoint.edu.

PROMOTIONAL ITEMS The following rules apply to any promotional product using High Point University Insignia • Official university logos should never overlap other graphic elements. (specifically in examples that may seem like alterations to the logos or limit the readability/visibility) • The words “High Point University” should always be the most prominent visual. As a good rule of thumb, have the approved logo/full university name be one of the biggest font sizes or match the widest width of other graphic elements. • Secondary colors used should complement our primary brand color, royal purple. • Flying HPU and the panther head mark must be used in conjunction with the full name, “High Point University”. • When graphics are included on both the front and back of an item, the full university name must also be displayed on each side. If the back is blank, the full name is only required on the front. • Never use “High Point” without “University” to avoid confusion with the city of High Point. • “High Point” should not receive disproportionate emphasis over “University”; the full name must remain balanced in prominence and be perceived as one cohesive identity. • “The Premier Life Skills University” is not a required element on promotional items. • “Panthers” is not a standalone trademark and should only be used as a supporting element to the full university name. • Illustrations of our mascot, Prowler, are not allowed and paw print graphics should not be used. Please use a real photo or the official purple panther head mark. • The panther head should be purple. It can never be white. • The university name should not be split to the left and right by any graphic elements. • Black panther head is allowed on a case-to-case basis. Acceptable examples are engravings or one color screen printed products • High Point University should be legible • “HPU” should not be a prominent feature. Measurements should be proportionate to the official HPU Bold logo

PROMOTIONAL ITEMS • The official school logo or the full school name must be used on all apparel. The name should never be shortened or abbreviated. Example: The Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law NOT HPU Kahn Law. • Departments purchasing polos or traveling externally should order apparel in white, gray, black, purple, or lavender only. • Co-branding is not permitted on apparel purchased with University funds including polos. No additional brand or logo may be added alongside High Point University marks. • The University’s primary brand identity is established through its English name; therefore, the English version must remain present even when the University name is represented in other languages. • On promotional items, the University name may appear in a font other than approved University typefaces, provided that “High Point University” is always presented in title case and remains clear, legible, and easily recognizable. • Departments are encouraged to market creatively but may not create their own taglines, slogans, or proprietary language. EVENT STANDARDS The Office of University Events provides guidance and assistance that faculty, staff and students need to plan a successful event at High Point University. We help the HPU community simplify and navigate the complex details necessary to achieve a successful event on campus For more information, visit: https://www.highpoint.edu/event-planning/

Policies Regarding Internal Groups Student Events

Policies Regarding External Groups All organizations holding events at High Point University must respect the mission and values of the University. In order for an external group to gain access to University facilities, there should be a significant University interest in hosting the event. There should also be a strong nexus between the event the group wishes to hold at the University and the educational and research mission of the University or its standing as a member of the community. The external group must identify a University Sponsor (Academic Department, Administrative Office, SGA, or Athletics Department).

The use of campus space for student events is regulated by University Event staff. Clubs/organizations may request to reserve space only when the event purpose is relevant to the club/organization. The Campus Concierge, University Event staff, or other designee reserves the right to cancel an event at any time to ensure the safety and orderly operation of the campus and to re-purpose the space due to the priorities of the University.

Faculty and Staff Events

-The university does not rent facilities for fundraising activity.

Faculty and Staff of High Point University, with their respective department’s support, may act as University Sponsors and host events on campus. The department’s chair, school’s dean, or other designated University authority within that organization must be informed of the event and approve the proposed expenditure of funds.

-An external group must have a formal, written contract with the University.

TRADEMARKS AND LICENSING Affinity Licensing High Point University contracts with Affinity Licensing to help coordinate its licensing program. High Point University’s licensing program ensures that our brand identity is properly represented on products and services marketed to both the University community and the public. The Affinity Licensing program is responsible for determining if a product and/or design are consistent with the goals and image of High Point University. The program also ensures the quality, content, production, and distribution of products meet High Point University’s standards. Affinity serves as the licensing agent for High Point University to ensure proper brand management and brand protection for the University’s insignia (including name and logos). This process requires all vendors that make product bearing the University’s insignia to hold a formal license agreement through Affinity Licensing on behalf of the school - that among other things requires insurance protections and design submission for approval prior to production. From a royalty standpoint, items sold to the University that are not for resale, are royalty exempt. The royalty needs to be applied only when items are being sold to an entity outside the University or when the University purchases product but the items will be resold.

What is a trademark? A trademark is any logo, symbol, slogan, word or other element that may be used to identify a brand. These marks are only used with permission of the university and are managed through Affinity Licensing. For example, our name, “High Point University” is a registered trademark of the university and requires prior approval to use on materials or merchandise.

TRADEMARKS AND LICENSING Licensed Vendors How do I know if the vendor I want to use is licensed? Check the Licensed vendors list located on the Office of Communications website. This list is frequently updated and does not include businesses that may be operating under a different business name. For questions regarding a particular business, contact the Office of Communications. https://affinitylicensing.com/clients/high-point-university/25631?search=&location=&product_categories

What types of vendors need to be licensed? Any vendor producing items bearing the High Point University brand must be licensed. This includes, but is not limited to promotional products, signage, banners and uniforms.

If the item being produced has no reference to High Point University do I still need to use a licenced vendor? If university funds are being used to produce the item, it must bear approved logos or wordmarks. This includes all departments, initiatives, and student organizations. If the item has printing on both or multiple sides, each side must also have printed the High Point University name.

NO DEPARTMENTS OR STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS MAY SELL ITEMS BEARING THE HPU BRAND UNLESS APPROVED BY THE OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS. 58
