Riding into a New Era Scottsdale Maserati Welcomes the MC20, a 621-Horsepower Supercar written by Nick Esquer There must be something about Italian artistry that prompts slower and more methodical craftsmanship. For instance, Leonardo Da Vinci took four years to paint the Mona Lisa. Michelangelo also dedicated four years of his life to another painting masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel, lying on his back on scaffolding to put all the work into its finite details. That same instinctual laborious approach to a work of art can be seen in the new 2021 MC20, the stunning flagship ride from Italian sports car company, Maserati.

The new model, part of the company’s rebirth strategy of sorts, is the first in a lineup of model reboots due out over the next three years. Much about the MC20 stays true to the sportscar standards, built around a central carbonfiber tub made in collaboration with Dallara, an engineering company with a resume that includes Alfa Romeo and Bugatti. The body is made up of carbon fiber, coming in the form of both a convertible and coupe, which boasts two powertrains and a nimble weight of just over 3,200 pounds.

Back to the MC20, Maserati is set to launch an electric model shortly after the gasoline enters the market. It will debut a 90-degree V-6 engine the company calls “Nettuno,” or Neptune in Italian. This twin-turbo 3.0-liter sports car comes with oversquare cylinder dimensions, 24 valves, direct fuel injection, and two spark plugs for each cylinder.

One of the plugs incorporates a passive compression pre-chamber ignition system. The air-fuel mixture under the hood is forced into this antechamber during the compression stroke, and the primary ignition takes place inside it.

Maserati engineers worked on this combustion process to make a more efficient engine.

According to DeBoer, the Maserati MC20 is the company’s halo car that introduces a new brand era and modern design language. It will also herald Maserati’s return to racing. This eagerly anticipated mid-engine RWD super sports car is packed with technology and will carry a distinct sporty Maserati style, echoed in future products.

With a peak output of 621 horsepower, the ride sports 7,500 rpm or an even 8,000 rpm with the Nettuno version.

The latter drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle featuring a limited-slip differential.

Maserati has touted the MC20 can go from 0-60 mph in less than 3.0 seconds and top out at 202 mph. Want more speed? The electric version is set to go even faster and last 235 miles on one charge.

A production prototype of the 2021 MC20 has been making appearances at Maserati dealerships across the country, including Scottsdale Maserati, giving starry-eyed onlookers a chance to gaze at its sharp body.

“Since September, the MC20 Bianco Audauce (bold white) prototype has been travelling across North America visiting over 15 locations where consumers have been very excited to see the car and put their orders in,” says DeBoer. “All customers own more than five cars, and some are collectors of luxury super sports cars. They are looking for something fresh and exciting and want to be the first to own a new design.”

Goodguys Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals Returns to WestWorld of Scottsdale November 20–22 written by David M. Brown More than 10,000 hot rod fans are expected to attend the Goodguys 23rd Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals at WestWorld of Scottsdale November 20–22, 2020. Showcasing 2,000-plus hot rods, customs, classics, muscle cars, and trucks, the event is organized by Pleasanton, California-based Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, the world’s largest hot rodding group, with 70,000-plus active members.

Barrett-Jackson Fall Event Restarts Live Auctions in Scottsdale with $24.9-Plus Million in Sales written by David M. Brown A total of 442 vehicles brought $23.5-plus million, 349 pieces of automobilia sold for more than $634,000 and $845,000 was raised from three charity cars during the first Barrett Jackson Fall Auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale, October 22–24.

“We proved that it’s not only possible to produce a live event where guests feel safe but that the collector car community remains vibrant and the market is resilient and healthy,” says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson.

The bidders, consignors and invited guests who attended thanked Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, for the health and safety measures the Scottsdalebased company took in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An online and global TV audience also experienced the sale of the 100-percent No Reserve docket. Event sales totaled $24.9-plus million.

One of the three charity vehicles was Ken Block’s 2016 Focus RS RX (#3000) which raised $200,000 to benefit Team Rubicon; the world-champion rally cross driver assisted on the block. In addition, a 2019 Ford F-350 Lariat Custom Pickup (#3001) sold for $275,000, benefiting Building Homes for Heroes and a 2020 Chevrolet Corvette (#3002), $370,000, for Heartstrings Foundation. In its 49-year history, BarrettJackson has raised more than $127 million for 170-plus organizations nationwide.

“We’re so thankful for the bidders, consignors and guests who joined us for our first in-person event since January,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO. “Working closely with the city of Scottsdale and officials from WestWorld, we demonstrated that we could host live events and maintain the highest standards of safety. Brown Held virtually because of COVID-19 precautions, the fourth Camelback Motor Show went live November 1 on YouTube and Facebook. Two Valley car lovers, the event’s founder, businessman West Kenyon, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper, co-hosted the biannual event, which celebrated the great cars of the early part of the 20th century.

“Every car and every owner made for a truly spectacular show,” says Kenyon. “The pandemic forced out-of-the-box thinking that inspired a broader reach to car enthusiasts and reshaped the future of the Camelback Motor Show for years to come.”

The sponsors were led by Hagerty Insurance Agency LLC, the world’s largest provider of collector car insurance. Others included Highline Autos, Griot’s Garage, Camelback Bible Church, Repro Parts (D-Jetronic), Flo’s, Acclaim Collector Car & Transmission and AZ MetroScapes Inc. Owners of the 14 cars participating appeared and Kenyon congratulated them as they received their awards and a collection of premium car care products from Griot’s Garage.

No money was raised for charity during this event because of the low number of cars allowed, following COVID-19 guidelines. “This was more of a precursor for future Alice Cooper Solid Rock Teen Center car shows we hope to hold each fall,” says Kenyon. Cooper and his wife Sheryl started the program 25 years ago, providing young people free training in music, dance, sound and recording, lighting and staging, video production and art in a supervised facility.

“Trying to start a new event for a great cause (Solid Rock) during a pandemic could be viewed as crazy. While most industries are struggling or have struggled in the recent past due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic impact, AZ Euros has seen expansion come its way. In fact, with people stuck at home and a little more free time on everyone’s hands, car enthusiasts who had been pushing off some much-needed repairs or service wheeled their way into the auto shop.

The result was a move to a bigger building and room for more cars to work on, cementing AZ Euros as a fixture in the local custom auto industry for years to come. What’s the secret to their success? Consistency.

“We’ve always done the same thing. We’ve had the same approach to everyday business, and that’s being honest and upfront. We figured out that we needed to get the right team members on board to have the same vision and fine-tuned process,” explains Andrade. “We’ve been so busy because of that. Headed up by Day and Andrade, the auto sales and service business started of their shared passion for cars. AZ Euros offers car buyers a full lineup of cars for sale, including Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, and Porsche, brands that the two car enthusiasts have experience driving and fixing.

With its expanding client base, AZ Euros was forced to find a new place to fit its services and growth. Located on the border of Mesa and Tempe, the new space—just two buildings down from its previous location—is free standing with 360-degree access, which makes it easy to get cars in and out. And after tearing out five of the building’s eight offices inside, Day and Andrade were presented with the opportunity to maximize their space for more cars.

“We added a mezzanine for storage and organization and a Mustang AWD-150 Dyno that we flush mounted in the ground. Also, we took our existing Hunter Hawkeye Laser alignment rack and also mounted flush in the ground for easy access on even the lowest exotics. It helps with cutting down on labor and set up time and gets the car in and out

faster with less risk of damage. We were targeting customers with the dyno for drivability concerns, emissions testing, pre/post HP figures after upgrades and we’re able to cater to that,” explains Andrade.

Day and Andrade were able to add four more lifts altogether and double their work capacity. They even hired two more employees to take on the new load of work. As service specialists, AZ Euros makes it a point to handle anything bumper to bumper. With eight full-time employees, the shop offers fullservice options for cars, except for painting. Engine swaps, A/C service, general maintenance, timing belt, safety–they can handle it.

For the guys, 2020 has also opened the door to more partnerships in the custom auto market as AZ Euros became an authorized dealer for Recaro and DS1 from Australia earlier this year. These moves only emphasize the team’s devotion to meet the customer more than halfway.

“We know what’s buzzing out there of what’s popular, so we read between the lines and try to get ahead of what customers might want. We want to be able to cater to everyone because this industry is so fast and so many good companies are popping up, we want to be able to have the best options to offer” notes Andrade.

The team has found its sweet spot as to what cars to service and what cars to carry for their unique inventory, shifting to cars in the $20,000-$30,000 range. Andrade points out that it’s the entire shop’s goal to bring in more Porsches for the year ahead while also being sure to offer up sought-after brands like Audi and BMW in its 20-unit inventory.

“COVID-19 did the opposite of hurting us this year. We had some record-setting months with services and inventory. When everyone was working from home and staying at home, we took on more projects since people had more time,” says Andrade.

But no matter the rate of growth or size of building AZ Euros operates out of, the goal has always been—and always will be—to treat each car that comes in as a priority. It’s the team’s dedication to service and understanding what each car needs and how it ticks that separates AZ Euros from other import houses.

In 2007, Valley arts leader, philanthropist and family matriarch, Alice Josephine ‘AJ’ Fleet Dickey, purchased the ranch. The Texas native had a passion for riding horses and competed as a young woman on the Texas show circuit. That equestrian love continues with Ken and his siblings and Alice’s grandchildren.

She and Ken remodeled and added on to the home and built the adjacent two-bedroom home, where she lived until her unexpected passing last August. These improvements, including the world-class barn, were completed in 2008.

“Everyone in the Valley either knew or knew of Alice Dickey and the great work she did in for our museums and for our arts institutions such as the Heard Museum, the Scottsdale Artists School and the Phoenix Seminary,” says Aazami.

Both homes are superbly detailed. In the main house, for example, are thick flagstone kickboards and baseboards and concrete floors. And, the adjacent two-bedroom-plus study home has high ceilings and exposed beams, skylights, clerestory windows and, in the powder room, stained glass reclaimed from the Dickey family’s 1940s house in Houston.

“In my 39 years in luxury real estate, I have rarely seen such attention to the details in these two homes, which beautifully showcase fine furniture and art,” says McCarthy. “They are two estate homes that live like art galleries.”

Both homes, in fact, have displayed many sculptures, artworks and books owned by AJ. Many of these have been promised to the Heard Museum, the nearby world-famous venue dedicated to sustaining the art and culture of indigenous peoples. Connecting the homes is an elegant loggia, garden, koi pond, waterfall and meeting space. “My mother often entertained to benefit the Heard and other institutions,” says Ken, “and together the two homes and the courtyard space between them provided diverse spaces for these events.”

Working that ring daily is Ken’s childhood friend, Lisa Jacquin, two-time Olympian and silver medalist, champion jumper and the youngest person ever inducted into the Jumping Hall of Fame, he explains. She trains and exercises the horses and manages the equestrian operations, which includes horse boarding and grooming. Among the amenities is synthetic ground developed for jumpers, grandfathered arena lighting and water cannons at the corners for dust control.

Also on staff are two caretakers. “Their continuing services could be negotiated with the new owner,” says Ken.

Show-Stopping Barn and Grounds Because of his extensive equestrian knowledge, Ken designed the $1.5-million stables constructed by Bob Hamilton, widely respected for his luxe private horse barns and arenas. “It’s more than equal to any luxury barn in Arizona, and the adjacent arena can host any horse event imaginable,” says McCarthy.

The property has a 2-inch dedicated water line and a 12-inch irrigation line. Rocking D Ranch carries SRP flood irrigation rights and also has an auto watering system. This provides dust control for the arena, water for horse maintenance and the extensive flora on the property, such as 14 citrus species including fig, key lime and Meyer lemon.

In 2019, the family consolidated new electric service on one meter, rated at 600 amps. A natural-gas-powered emergency generating system is large enough to power the entire property.

“The ranch is large, luxurious and cost-efficient to run for both water and electricity,” McCarthy says. For example, Ken estimates that irrigation water is $800 annually.

Three vehicles are included with the property: a 6410 John Deere tractor with accessory attachments; an electric golf cart; and a solar-powered diesel fuel trailer with 500 gallons of fuel capacity.

The site accommodates all deliveries. ”The largest semi allowed on the road can get all the way into and turn around on the property, front to back,” says Ken. To further control flies, manure is removed weekly in 60 city of Phoenix garbage cans; this service costs just $5 a month per can to collect.

Finally, other livestock are permitted, including cows and goats.

“Rocking D Ranch is an equestrian’s dream, an extended family’s dream, an entertainer’s dream, a car lover’s dream,” says Aazami.

An Inside Look at Outpatient Care Venn Opens Doors to the Future of Healthcare and ASC Growth written by Stephanie Fogelson Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) are changing healthcare delivery as well as the market for medical devices and equipment. By putting lower-risk procedures in a more convenient setting, ASCs can offer surgical procedures at rates of up to 50 percent lower than hospitals. All this is resulting in nearly $40 billion in annual savings for the U.S. healthcare system while also fueling ASC growth.

In 2017, ASCs performed more than half of all outpatient surgeries in the country, and their influence is only set to grow with orthopedic, spine, and cardio procedures poised to increase the fastest in ASCs. In 2018, more than 5,700 operating centers were up and running, performing more than 23 million procedures altogether. Some of those ASCs are right here in the Phoenix area, and many have been built and led by Venn Construction.

Venn has been at the forefront of ASC growth in the Greater Phoenix area working with valuable partners, including developers, architects and brokerage teams, to get the job done. ‘It’s my happy place . . .’

10,000-square-foot standalone dream car barn on six acres along the south side of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix. “I spend a ton of time here,” he says.

Mike Lovell’s dad, Ellis, saved his son’s elementary school notebooks from his native Cleveland; in them the Phoenix resident and businessman scribbled “’69 Camaro SS396” hundreds of times after he saw one for the first time. This was the third year for Chevrolet’s response to the Ford Mustang released four and a half years prior.

Visioned by Lovell, the luxe man cave was built by Phoenix luxury home specialist, Joe Hendricks, with an interior designed by Raegan Ford Interior Design, Scottsdale. Cole Bailes, owner of Carspitality, is responsible for keeping the collection shined and detailed.

Today, and almost every day, Lovell ogles his own ’69 Camaro as part of what he understatedly calls his “blue collar collection” of vintage and contemporary cars and motorcycles –– a

The eclectic collection includes his oldest car, a rare 1932 Packard, two restored Camaros –– his first car, a ’67, and the ’69 –– and the newest, a 2014 1,800-mile Aston Martin Vanquish he bought for his wife, Stacy, who doesn’t drive the behemoth performer very often, preferring riding as a passenger.

His bikes include a 1926 BSA that Ellis once hung on the wall of his bar in Cleveland; a 1928 Matchless; a 1970 Harley-Davidson XR750; and a 1920 Indian he purchased at Mecum Glendale this year. “It stalled on the block, so I grabbed it,” he says of the 100-year-old classic. He also has some contemporary bikes such as a 1986 Suzuki GSXR 750 Limited, one of 199 made.

“I grew up with vintage cars in the garage, in a family of car collectors/restorers, including my dad and my older brother, so I’ve been actively restoring cars my whole life,” says Lovell, adding that he attended NCRS shows as a boy, where his dad regularly judged. “It’s in the blood.”

He collects eclectically, rides he enjoys. “Everything I own I love, everything I own, I own for a reason,” he says. “That could be a vintage pre-war car one day or a C3 Corvette the next. I don’t do this to achieve accolades or impress any specific car groups. I’m not trying to collect only this or that.

It’s not a room full of Ferraris or McLarens. It’s a room full of cars I love and cars I drive regularly.”

Steel Trusses are a Big Plus “Mike had a very clear vision of what he wanted. He wanted an epic garage to showcase his collection,” says Ford, whose full-service interior design firm has specialized in high-end residential projects for more than a decade. “He had never been able to house them under one roof, until now.” The garage was completed in November 2019.

“He envisioned a dark, sleek masculine environment that would be the perfect backdrop to highlight the dazzling colors of his vehicles,” she explains. “Mike requested that the living spaces be inviting and comfortable. The combination of rich leathers, rough-sawn woods and raw metals are what make this museum-quality garage an ultimate gentleman’s retreat.”

In this spirit, the garage has a modern industrial vibe with a fully exposed structure. The steel trusses eliminate columns, expanding the square footage for cars and motorcycles and facilitating flow-through for events. “On the trusses, we’re mounting mini-bikes riding toward each other,” Lovell says, pointing to the ceiling. “It’s just another feature that many people won’t notice, but when you look up and see bikes in the rafters, it will give a cool effect!”

With Hendricks, the builder, he reviewed the concepts and details for months and agreed on how to accommodate all of the cars on the acre lot. “The building started out as a garage but morphed into a museum,” says Hendricks.

“The overall design of the structure can be sourced back to a Midwest barn: tall walls, zero internal posts and clerestory windows, allowing for indirect natural light with no direct sunlight ever reaching the cars,” he explains.

The foundation includes 6-inch-thick black-colored concrete and Kevlar reinforcing strands; after the concrete cured, the construction team polished and sealed the slab. Steel I-beams and posts, with 8-inch steel studs, provide the structural integrity; spray foam is used between structural members.

The corrugated metal roof also received spray foam insulation, and the entire garage is climate controlled through six airconditioning systems.

Ron Kotloff and his Mesa-based AEI Lighting team installed the custom lighting. That three-stage lighting includes dimmable up-lighting, spot lighting and flood lighting –– all in one fixture.

In particular, the low lighting sends glimmers off the well-buffed collectibles to great effect.

Above the floor is a mezzanine, where Lovell relaxes, entertains, plays poker and looks over his collection. An air-filtering system keeps the space dust free and healthful.

He also wanted unusual items related to cars incorporated in the design, explains Ford. For instance, on the mezzanine and the ground level, the Weld House in Tempe fabricated

metal tables from scrap-yard automotive pieces. In addition, the company sourced four 1970s/1980s Pontiac Trans Am hoods with the signature Screaming Eagle decal from junk yards for the midnight-gray walls. “That’s why they’re dented and look a little beat up,” says Lovell. “Just to provide a finished look, each hood has been pinstriped on the edge.”

Below this level is a commercial-sized 20-foot-long steel and concrete bar, designed and fabricated by Josh Hawkins, principal of Hawkins Buildco, Phoenix. For the wall backing the bar, Hawkins found and placed reclaimed wood from a late-1800s tobacco barn in Virginia.

The cars are the life of the garage, but Lovell could live here, too. His man-kitchen incorporates a custom diamond-tread hood, which complements the red-lacquered cabinetry. Two bathrooms are in place, one with a steel pivot door, concrete trough sink, a modern industrial shower and the second finished with dark dimensional wall tile. Both feature images of classic cars printed on aluminum.

A bedroom completes the domestic component. After she saw the living quarters for the first time (the city required this to satisfy zoning), Stacy jokingly asked him, “Is there anything I should know?”

He’s installed a supercharged LT1 with methanol injection and four-inch exhaust; it puts out about 800 horsepower. An “outrageous interior” completes the build. When he takes off at green lights with a slight depression of the pedal, people stop him (if they can catch up) and ask, “‘What kind of Hummer is that’?”

oleanders. On the garage side of the hedge, Lovell had a world-class concrete skateboard park built for their oldest daughter, a top-ranked competitor. “We’ve had leading names in the sport visit us here. She crushes it every day out there,” says Lovell.

He has plans for another garage on the adjacent land: a miniature version of the “museum,” about 4,200 square feet, a shop where he, his dad and his children can repair and restore together in a dirty-shop environment.

Hats Off to a ’67 Camaro Ragtop Lovell’s cars aren’t just for show or raised up on designer lifts, like worshipped gods. “I drive everything every month,” he says.

The second is an original Hummer used by the military. “‘It’s a ton of fun. Guys come up to me at the gas pumps and tell me about their Hummer experiences in Iraq, like breaking frames jumping them in the desert.”

Here are some of his other moving pleasures: •1967 Camaro Convertible –– Lovell’s first car, purchased in the 1980s, is in popular Emerald Turquoise, but the Camaro was rusty and rough when he got it. “I sold it to go off for college, but my father quietly had a friend buy it, and 15 years ago he surprised me with it fully restored when I started the collection,” Lovell explains.

Today, his first car is still his favorite, with a 350-cid crate motor and a Turbo 350 tranny. “It’s the easiest to drive of all the cars in the garage and a great cruiser,” he says, adding that he loves the small blocks because they better match the sub-optimal suspensions of the day.

•1932 Packard Light Eight Convertible –– Lovell’s first pre-war car. Created during the Great Depression as an entry-level economy car to downplay wealth and excess, the Light Eight did not succeed, and the model lasted just this year. A 320-cid straight-eight engine generated 110 horses, and the smaller frame delivered improved performance compared with the full-sized model.

Lovell purchased the Fran Roxas-restored classic at RM Sotheby’s at the Biltmore Hotel a few years ago. The car features the standard rumble seat and a travel trunk.

“I absolutely fell in love with its sleek styling and amazing design,” Lovell says. “It drives better than any other car I own. We’re in it regularly, and it’s amazing.”

•Tri-Fives –– Ellis grew up with the Chevy 1955, 1956 and 1957 Belairs. In homage to that, his son’s collection includes a two-tone 1955 Dusk Rose/India Ivory Bel Air. “One color is the least popular that year and the off-white was the most popular,” he says. About 15 years ago, we restored it with a 454-cid powerplant, punched out to 462 cubic inches.”

Representing the following year, a 1956 Matador Red ragtop is showroom quality, with the original 265-cid V-8, a three speed automatic and the optional “Power Pack,” which included dual exhausts and a Rochester four-barrel. Lovell added seat belts to take the family for rides. “It’s so Americana, a cool cruiser,” he says.

•1957 Mercedes 190SL Convertible –– Ellis has been a Mercedes judge for many years and is still an active member of the 190SL Club. This is a car his son grew up driving.

Ellis restored it, achieving 499.3 out of 500 points at an international 190 meet in 2014, and it remains one of the highest scoring 190s in existence, says Lovell.

Ellis, 82, is still restoring cars in Cleveland. “He spends 50 to 60 hours a week in the shop and is doing a 1962 Impala 327 now,” Lovell says. “When he comes here, he hangs out.

We talk cars, go to auctions and shows together and work on cars.”

•1967 Corvette –– A small-block 327-cid/350-horse convertible, the third-generation convertible has the side-pipe option.

“We bought this car in pieces in 1993 and got it finished and back on the road in 2001, just before Stacy and I were married in 2002. That car has stayed with us since, no matter where we lived or how small our garage was. We have a lot of great memories in it. I love that car.”

•1969 Chevrolet Chevelle –– “Every true car guy dreams of a full pro street-level drag car, and this car is that machine for me,” he says. He found it in the 1980s with a factory 396cubic-inch engine which now propels his 1969 Camaro, upgraded to 550 horses.

In its place he swapped in a 540-cubic-inch Bill Mitchell motor, rebuilt by Dean Gellner, and added nitrous for 925

horsepower and low-9-second quarters. “I know I can get it into the 8s,” he says.

•1965 Shelby Cobra –– This was always his dream car, with the connection to the great Carroll Shelby and his worldchampionship racing team. He found the one-owner 289-cid, 26,000-original-mile car that was sold new in Illinois. It had been repainted but, otherwise, “It’s clean, original and authentic,” he says. “For a while, I didn’t drive it and treated it like it was a unicorn. Now, like everything else in the garage, it’s driven and enjoyed.”

•1987 Buick Grand National –– “This is a car I always loved, as it was the quickest American factory production vehicle produced during my high school years,” says Lovell.

He bought an all-original car years ago in Ohio with just 12,000 original miles. He traded it later for the Chevelle.

When his then 8-year-old daughter found out, she told him how upset she was. “That’s my favorite car,” she said. So he bought it back.

“It’s hers now,” he says. “She asked me to get her some red velvet stanchions to put around it so that no one touches it.

“When she turns 16, it will be her daily driver.”

Cole Bailes’ Carspitality Classics Care with all the Details written by David M. Brown Cole Bailes takes care of your classics and the classic spaces where you show them.

His Carspitality staff will clean the floors of your cars and then mop your collector-garage floors. “Our mission is taking automobile collections and classic-car museums to the highest level of presentation,” says the 23-year-old Scottsdale resident.

The services include hand-washing cars and motorcycles; detail-spray wipe-down and dusting; battery tender connection; bathroom disinfecting and detailing; living space disinfecting and detailing; dusting/mopping floors; memorabilia care; placing oil drip mats; floor-care management; showroom dusting/detailing; and managing a collection. These services can be contracted weekly, biweekly or monthly.

Customers can also select specialty services such as steam cleaning; engine-compartment detailing; undercarriage detailing; vehicle-interior detailing; aluminum/chrome polishing; leather restoration, care and recoloring; awardwinning paint correction; vehicle protection; concours show prep; and deodorizing. “That level could involve polishing all the imperfections out of the paint; color sanding the paint completely flat with no texture; steam cleaning the undercarriage for two days straight; disassembling the interior so you can detail beyond the eye can see; repairing a scratch in a leather seat; or installing new restored parts,” he explains.

Comparing his services with others is easy in our social-mediafocused world. But, Bailes chooses not to. “The industry,” he says, “has a lot of knowledgeable professionals like myself.”

Still, he adds, “Very few have my knowledge and experience with high-price-tag collector cars. It is a completely different game than just doing a wash and wax on a daily driver. There are a lot of important aspects about classic cars that most detailers will not take the time to learn; therefore, they are sticking to the basics of detailing.

“What sets me apart is my attitude, my old-school personality and my involvement in the collector car scene,” he says, noting that he has been detailing at car auctions such as RM Sotheby’s, Worldwide Auctioneers and Gooding & Company since he was 15.

He began Cole’s Detailing in his freshman year of high school.

“Older classics always got me excited at a young age, and I soon found my passion in auto detailing. Now getting to care for very collectible vehicles in the detailing restoration business, I am very grateful, to say the least,” he says.

The Tank Yard at General George S. Patton Memorial Museum, Chiriaco Summit, CA

How to brighten an otherwise boring drive to LA written by Peter Volny There are so many of us who frequently endure the drive to LA along Interstate 10 so here are a few suggestions to break up the trip and monotony.

Leaving Phoenix, you have to battle traffic from very early in the morning until late at night, but don’t even thing of leaving anytime between about 3PM and 7PM as rush hour heading west to well past Goodyear is abysmal. The multi-lane highway is marked at 65MPH and like any highway in Arizona if you’re not doing at least ten over the limit don’t even thing about getting out of the slow lane. The road narrows to two lanes west of Goodyear but thankfully the speed limit goes to 75MPH. The terrain is very flat and pretty featureless but starts to get interesting with both curves and hills, and scenery, at Exit 31 as you first climb then descend into Quartzsite.

If you want a break for a Kodak moment see the “Hi Jolly Memorial” at the cemetery which pays tribute to Hadji Ali, one of several camel drivers brought over by the U.S. Army in a failed attempt to introduce camels to the American Southwest. After the experiment was abandoned, Ali was the only driver to remain in Arizona. He took up prospecting and became known to locals as “Hi Jolly”. There are also hundreds of Petroglyphs in the area.

Mission Inn Hotel & Spa

From Quartzsite it’s only about 20 miles to the California border but do stop and fill up at the one of the two very prominently signed “Last Gas Before Border” as it’s far cheaper in Arizona than heavily taxed California. Once across the river border the speed limit drops to 70MPH but our neighbors disregard it as much as we do. Here the road is flat and quite featureless until you approach Chiriaco Summit where magnificent mountain ranges rise precipitously on both sides of the ride albeit in the distance.

There is a really worthwhile stop at Chiriaco Summit to visit the General Patton Memorial Museum right by the highway. Inside there is a chronology showing Patton’s history from childhood to the legendary, and controversial, World War Two General. Exhibits details the war in both the European and Pacific Arenas, but most would agree that the highlight is the outdoor Tank Yard with several of these enormous vehicles, including the M4 Sherman, the M26 Pershing, the M48 and M60a Patton Tanks.

From Chiriaco Summit the road comes down very steeply dropping from some 1,500 feet of elevation to thirty feet below sea level in just a few miles as you enter Indio and Palm Springs. There are lots of hotels and resorts for any price range in Palm Springs, which also has the world’s largest rotating tram-car rising from about sea-level to over 8,500 feet in just two and a half miles with spectacular vistas all around. At the summit there are a couple of restaurants, observation decks and a museum. In winter while it can be stifling hot at the base, there can be lots of snow at the top so dress appropriately.

Continuing on into Los Angeles the traffic becomes very heavy and the road surface deteriorates. There are also seemingly never-ending road construction projects. The highway splits here with State Route 60 being the better choice if your destination is south LA or staying on I-10 if you’re heading to north LA or on to Northern California.

There is a wonderful historic hotel in Riverside called the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, originally established in 1876. Built in various stages over the decades, it is an architectural delight with a mixture of styles, several domes and towers, flying buttresses, a beautiful chapel and several public rooms, the most famous being the Presidential Lounge which pays homage to the ten US Presidents who have visited.

Take a selfie in the custom oversized chair made especially for the corpulent President Taft, stay in one of the historic rooms and enjoy dinner in the open courtyard before heading into Los Angeles bright and refreshed the next day.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S the fastest luxury class vehicle on the Nurburgring Nordschleife With the 2021 model year, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S is even faster on the legendary Nordschleife "North loop" of the NĂźrburgring. Thanks to newly tuned elastokinematics and other fine-tuning measures, AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert set a new record time, putting the four-door coupe from Affalterbach impressively in first place on the official list of best cars in the "luxury class" category. The former racing driver beat his own previous lap record set in the fall of 2018 by 2.3 seconds. The officially measured and notary-certified values are: 7:23.009 min for the 12.8-mile-long version (without straightline measurement for track section T13) and 7:27.800 min for the 12.944-mile-long complete track (with straight- line measurement for track section T13). This variant and this lap time is officially listed

by NĂźrburgring GmbH on their homepage. Mercedes-AMG has thus impressively regained the crown in the class.

The 630 hp Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S set out to achieve a new record in its completely standard form, and it's outfitted particularly well for this: Its equipment includes highlights such as the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all- wheel drive, active rear-axle steering, an electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential and the AMG DYNAMICS agility program. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires fitted during the record-breaking drive, which customers can also order as an option, provided the final bit of grip for optimized traction and powerful acceleration out of the total of 73 curves in the "Green Hell".

"Even though I've been accompanying our GT 63 through its development for several years now, it's always impressive to see the wide spread we have been able to achieve with this exclusive vehicle. This is especially true after the recent slight revision. On the one hand, the four-door coupe is comfortable and equipped with many intelligent safety features for everyday driving, and on the other hand it offers this extremely high level of driving dynamics and precision, which we have now been able to demonstrate once again on the demanding Nordschleife," said Demian Schaffert.

The conditions on the extremely demanding course were anything but optimal, as some sections of the course had wet spots. At outside temperatures of 44.6 degrees Fahrenheit and asphalt temperatures of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, Schaffert made optimal use of the top model in the AMG GT four-door vehicle family. In the RACE driving program, the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension specifically tightens the damper characteristics, and the steering characteristics become more direct. In the "Master" position, the AMG DYNAMICS agility program also utilizes all the possibilities of the fully variable all-wheel drive system – as well as the rapid-response control of the electronic limited-slip differential – to ensure the highest possible dynamic response. As an additional safety measure for the driver, the vehicle was equipped with a bucket seat and four-point seat belts.
