Three contemporary hypercars –– a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach, a 2017 Ford GT Competition Series and a 2019 McLaren Senna –– will lead approximately 1,500 collector vehicles into Mecum Auctions Glendale 2020 event, March 11–14, at State Farm Stadium, just off SR 101 at Glendale Avenue.

Featuring a diversity of cars and motorcycles for every budget, as early as a 1930 Model A Ford, the 2nd-annual event offers hot rods, customs, resto mods, muscle cars, exotics, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, classics, Japanese imports and today’s supercars ––representing more than nine decades of collectibles.

Three fine collections are also on the docket.

Many vehicles will be at no reserve, and the majority will be offered with reserve, a decision Mecum Auctions allows each consignor to make.

In response to the suggestions of participants and guests, the Mecum team has rethought the layout for the vehicle display areas to improve the auction experience for consignors, bidders and guests.

Seller’s check-in is Sunday through Tuesday, March 8–10, 8 a.m. –6 p.m.

Gates for the auction open daily at 8 a.m., Wednesday through Saturday, March 11–14, and the docket begins at 10 a.m. daily. Gates close one hour after the final vehicle of the day crosses the block.

New for Glendale 2020 is the collectible guitar auction segment, March 11, 13 and 14, featuring more than 100 vintage examples from makers such as Gibson, Fender, Jens Ritter and more.

The Paint-to-Sample Riviera Blue Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach (Lot #S124), #421 of 918 produced, has had one owner who logged just 1,685 miles. The world-class 4.6-liter/ 887-horsepower DOHC direct injection engine is connected to an all-wheel-drive dual clutch PDK 7-speed automatic transmission and an electro-mechanical limited slip differential

with a 3.08 final drive. Among the many superlative features are a plug-in hybrid drive and carbon ceramic disc brakes with acid green calipers.

With only 265 miles, the Ford GT (#S117) was owned by Sebastien Bourdais, GTE class winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016 and is one of the three remaining Ford GT Competition Series, Serial #67. Its mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve Ecoboost V-6 produces 647 horsepower and 550 ft/lbs of torque through titanium exhausts and tops out at 216 mph. The 7-speed dual clutch transmission includes paddle shifters, and the street-legal racer features five drive modes with two variable-ride-height settings.

The McLaren Senna (#S110), with only 635 miles, is one of the 500 produced, with a 789-horsepower 4.0-liter V-8, including a twin-scroll twin-turbo with dry sump lubrication. Black on Galvanic Grey with Bright Red stitching, the car features a carbon fiber Monocage III chassis with an extruded aluminum subframe, twin-hinge dihedral doors. Inside are Senna SS logo embroidered headrests, celebrating the legendary F1 driver, a portrait screen infotainment system, Bowers and Wilkins seven-speaker audio and McLaren track telemetry.

A 1967 Dodge Charger Resto Mod (#S88) documents the continuing strength of the custom market. Professionally built

by Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop, the car is powered by a Ray Barton 528-cid/651-horsepower Hemi V-8 engine producing 618 lb/ft of torque. Performance features include a Bowler 4L80E automatic transmission; Dana 60 rear end with 35spline axles and 3.50 gears; Magnum Force K-member with tubular control arms and sway bar; Magnum Ford 4-link rear suspension; and 14-inch Viper disc brakes.

From 1969 is a Chevrolet COPO Chevelle (#S97), one of three COPO Chevelles produced in special-order Hugger Orange this year for the Canadian market and the only one with a 4-speed. The product of a frame-off rotisserie restoration using many NOS parts, the car features a 427-cid, 425-horse L72 V-8, Muncie M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed and a 4.10 Positraction differential. Other features include an aluminum intake, Gardner exhaust system; 4.10 Positraction differential; and vacuum-assisted power brakes with front discs.

From the final year of undetuned muscle, a Rallye Red-onBlack 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda (#S103), 2,800 miles, has the 426-cid/425-horse engine with a factory 4-speed, Shaker hood with color-matched scoop, hood hold-down pins, Pistol Grip shifter, Rallye wheels with Goodyear Polyglas GT raised white-letter tires, black “HEMI” hockey-stripe graphics and a Chrysler Registry report.

Star Cars Other cars appearing at Mecum Glendale 2020 include a 1936 Cord 810 Convertible Coupe (#S72), beautifully restored to 812 SC Specs; 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro (#F175), one of 201 produced, 427 cid/425 horse, 4-speed, Fathom Green with White Yenko striping; a 1969 Dodge Daytona (#F166), 440 cid/375 horses with an automatic; a survivor 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda (F169.1), with the 426-cid block; and a 151-mile 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (#S134), with a 5.4-liter engine generating 617 horses.

Also from the 1960s is a 1962 Ford Thunderbird M-Code Sports Roadster (#S101), one of just 120 equipped with the tri-power 390 cid and a 1968 Shelby GT500KR Fastback (#F168), one of only 450 that came through with factory air.

And from 1970 is a gorgeous unrestored Lemon Twist 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda (#F169.1) with a matching-numbers 426 and dual carbs.

Three Collections One collector, Glen Richardson, now in his 80s, will personally bring 15 vehicles to Glendale 2020. These begin chronologically with a 1934 Pontiac 603 sedan (#F123.1), featuring an inline 8 and 3-speed; a beautiful ’52 Hudson Hornet sedan (#F120); and a 1956 Lincoln Premiere convertible (#F122).

The Dennis Zentner Collection comprises nine cars, including the 1969 COPO Chevelle and the 1970 Hemi Cuda. Another muscle car landmark is a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (#S100) with the legendary 429-cid/375-horsepower engine and a 4-speed. Candy Apple Red on Black, this is #264 of only 279 with the 820-S engine. This very special ’Stang took Concours Gold at last year’s National Minnesota MCA meet.

Four cars comprise the Borcherdt Collection, including three Datsun 240Zs, one of which is a right-hand-drive Fairlady (#W61).

Mecum Auctions expects the collector car market to continue strong with Glendale 2020. The Garages of Scottsdale Brings Spaciousness, Privacy, Security and Luxury to Auto Garages written by Nick Esquer Every year, major car collectors roll into Scottsdale for car auction week. The annual Barrett-Jackson auction is the largest event, a veritable candyland for auto enthusiasts and casual onlookers alike. But while the yearly car extravaganzas are a great opportunity to eyeball some of the most unique and sought-after vehicles from yesteryear and today, for real estate developer Bob Gawlik, it’s practically an auto show every day in his life.

Ever since Gawlik, a classic car disciple of sorts, got behind the wheel of his first car when he was 13 he’s been hooked on all aspects of the automotive world. He grew a passion for not only driving, but owning cars and collecting some of his favorites, like a 1968 American Motors AMX race car, 1967 Chevy Nova restomod, 1969 Corvette restomod, and a 1972 Camaro. But as his own collection of race cars and collector cars grew, he needed somewhere to park, store and access them. That’s when the idea for developing a unique garage complex for other collectors and auto enthusiasts like him came to mind.

Gawlik’s Garages of Scottsdale complex, located in North Scottsdale, features 17 upscale garage units that are 5,000 &

6000 square feet, complete with ample space for customization. Standing at two stories in height, members have plenty of space to house numerous collectible cars and their automobila. Owners become engaged to truly make the space their own design something that’s been a big selling point for Gawlik.

Most people who are car enthusiasts that want or need a garage space outside of their home are usually only able to find something of smaller size where they could put three or four cars in and stop,” Gawlik says. “I wanted to build this project with larger garages. It provides a facility to people that’s a spectacular complex that they’re an owner in and where they can store their cars and build out a man cave and customize the inside to their liking.”

Here, garages are personalized to be not only places to store autos, but luxury, multilevel entertaining spaces, where owners turn them into man caves and host game nights and get-togethers with family, friends and other owners.

The Garages of Scottsdale is more of an auto-centric lifestyleforward facility for car enthusiasts. The units provide a mixture

of comfort and luxury for each member. Owners at The Garages of Scottsdale like to be around their cars, so sofas, loungers, TV’s, stereo speakers and eating tables share space with coupes, roadsters, SUV’s, classics and exotics.

A gated structure, the Garages can also house boats and RV’s and double as live-work units complete with kitchenettes and bathrooms. But the major draw for its members is the focus on safety, privacy, security and overall peace of mind, something that someone with a collection of unique cars would benefit from.

“Privacy and security is an important issue. Our complex is private and we have security systems placed all around, and each individual has their own security system for their garage.

The Garages also highly energy efficient with the ability to stay temperature and climate-controlled throughout the year, upholding the integrity of the cars inside. For members who have more than just a few cars to keep locked away, Gawlik had mezzanines installed and certified by structural engineers from the City of Scottsdale, capable to hold up to 60 tons of inventory at a time.

you can thank us later How Nick Veldman of Venn Construction Helps Investors with Commercial Real Estate written by Nick Esquer Commercial real estate can be at the top of the priority list for many investors looking to expand their business into a new industry. After all, it’s proven to be a lucrative endeavor over and over again, and in a state that’s seeing steady growth in the space, many are looking to dive into their first or second property. But most investors just starting out in commercial real estate might not know who to turn to or the order of how things should go.

From working with brokers to contractors to even just walking through a potential property, a lot can get confused and overwhelming. Commercial properties are a big departure from single-family investments and residential real estate altogether. From raising capital to working with all the cooks in the kitchen for a single deal, buying commercial real estate will require more from an investor.

But that in a nutshell is what Nick Veldman, owner of Venn Construction, wanted to solve when he started the company in 2015.

The way the industry is traditionally set up, Veldman explains, is that investors will go to acquire a piece of land or a building as an investment opportunity. They start with a land or sale broker, and from there, utilize the broker and architect to guide them through design. While this may be typical in

a new investor’s process, Veldman stresses they could be doing things differently and more advantageous to them as the consumer.

“When I purchased the company and rebranded to VENN I wanted to do things differently. Seeing so many real estate transactions I knew that we needed to engage earlier. Most don’t call on the contractor until the land or building is acquired and the architectural drawings are nearing completion. We engage in the real estate process earlier than most think or traditionally call on the contractor for. There are things we see or do that can impact the decisions looking through the lens of an expensive piece of the overall investment: construction,” says Veldman.

“Most people don’t bring their contractor in early enough because of the preconstruction cost or some sort of engagement agreement and the fear that they will not be able to bid multiple contractors.”

With many commercial real estate investments, the construction is the most significant and variant cost, so by not bringing the contractor in early in the process, you’re risking an important step. Veldman and the VENN team take a personable approach to working with investors, brokers and architects to ease the stress and confusion behind this process.

He meets with them to walk multiple buildings and look at costs altogether, while also guiding them along the balancing act that is investing in commercial real estate.

“We provide that expertise and knowledge early on in the process for no cost as part of our business development in order to assist the client. Usually you have to pay a preconstruction fee for as much as five percent of the overall project cost. We approach this cost differently. We handselect great people to work with and dive in to help them to be successful both inside and outside the actual construction on the building. We choose not to charge for the preconstruction services because if we have determined a client is a great VENN fit for the weeks and months that we will be working together, we want the financial health of the project to be most ideal,” concluded Veldman.

Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale: The auction arena erupted when the firstever mid-engine Corvette sold for $3 million

The Decade Begins on a Roll at Arizona Car Week in January written by David M. Brown Five Ford GTs represented half of the top 10 sales at the 49th Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction during Arizona Car Week in January. This was the highest grossing event ever for the company, with $141-plus million in total sales, including the Paul Walker Collection, automobilia and charity vehicles.

At the 21st-annual RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction in Phoenix, a Blue TriColore-liveried 2018 Pagani Huayra Roadster, the 42nd of 100 built, sold for $2,370,000, contributing to the $30.4-million total. And, in Scottsdale, at Gooding & Company’s 13th annual Scottsdale Auctions, a 1995 Ferrari F50 brought $3,222,500 –– the most valuable car sold during the week.

Leake Auctions, participating in its first Valley auction week, topped sales with a 2012 Lexus LFA Coupe (Lot #643.1) for $434,500, from the superlative John Staluppi collection. And, in Scottsdale, the sale at Worldwide Auctioneers was led by a splendidly restored 1936 Auburn 852 SC Boattail Speedster from The Chuck Morgan Estate Collection at $880,000, one of fewer than ten of the pre-war classics that has been 1936 ACD-certified.

And, the annual AZ Jet Center Event at the Scottsdale Airpark also helped make this Arizona Car Week a successful event.

Top Sellers With its multiple-record-setting Auction at WestWorld, Barrett-Jackson began the Scottsdale-based company’s yearlong celebration toward its 50th Anniversary, which takes place throughout 2021.

“New buyers want cars that offer all the modern luxuries and technology with the classic body styles, which continues to drive the demand for Resto-Mods,” Jackson explains. “As their passion, knowledge and experience with collector cars mature, their focus shifts to collecting professionally restored, matching-numbers cars, which is a trend that is keeping this hobby alive and strong.”

Automobilia sales were robust, too, with 1,206 pieces bringing $3.7-plus million. The top three: a 1951 Mobil Oil Left-Facing Pegasus Porcelain Sign with Animated Neon (#9499.2), $80,500; 1940s–50s Husky Oil Porcelain Sign (#8294), $57,500; and a 1940s–50s Chevrolet Ok Used Cars Signage (#9490.4), $55,200.

“This was absolutely the most phenomenal Scottsdale Auction in Barrett-Jackson’s history,” says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “We produced and executed the highest grossing event ever and gave guests the chance to experience the absolute exhilaration that only comes from the BarrettJackson experience.”

Held at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick adjacent to Scottsdale, Ritchie Bros.’ Leake Auctions posted these other top five sales, including a 10-percent buyer’s premium: a 1957 Chrysler 300C Convertible (#638.1), $357,500, a world-record hammer price for the model; 1958 Dual-Ghia Hemi Convertible (#642.1), $330,000; 1960 Chrysler 300F Convertible, $319,000, from the John Staluppi Collection; and a 1957 Desoto Adventurer (#647), purchased by John Staluppi for $302,500. Total sales were $17 million.

“It was an amazing event, and we couldn’t have done any of it without the support of our wonderful consignors, bidders, spectators, sponsors and vendors,” says Gary Bennett, general manager of the Leake collector car auction division of Ritchie Bros.

“There were many highlights during our four-day auction, but John Staluppi’s Cars of Dreams collection certainly brought the most excitement, all selling at No Reserve.

“We received many positive comments from customers throughout the auction and have proven our ability to bring top dollar for some of the best car collections in the United States.”

Leake Auctions also conducted an automobilia auction, totaling nearly $400,000. Top sales were a Flying ‘A’ Singlesided Neon Vintage 1930s sign, $13,225, and a 1940s Service

The two-day RM Sotheby’s auction, hosted by the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, brought $30.4 million. Bidders from 26 countries participated. The other top five cars: a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS by Pininfarina (Lot 242), $1,710,000; 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV by Bertone (#220), $1,391,000; 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (#155), $1,270,000; and a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton (#124), $1,105,000.

A 1991 Vector W8 Twin Turbo (#213) set a new record for the marque at $720,000, a 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 (#237) brought $1,105,000 and a magnificent 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Coupe (#234) $995,000.

“We had a very solid start to our 2020 calendar with the Arizona sale,” says Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s. “There was a great energy and busy crowds from preview through Friday night, which translated to a 90-percent sell-through rate and healthy prices for the best of the best cars across all categories.”

Meanwhile, at Bonhams on the lawns of the Westin Kierland in north Phoenix, 100 cars were offered, with a sell-through of 83 percent, totalling $8.5 million. Sales were led by a 1955 emerald-green Lancia Aurelia B24S Pininfarina Spider America, $810,000. Lee Iacocca’s 1992 Dodge Viper, the very first produced, brought a record $285,500, an ex-works 1967 Austin-Healey LeMans Streamliner Coupe, $123,200, and a 1924 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Special Roadster, $368,000.

“Our commitment to bringing the very best cars of their type to market remains stronger than ever, as does our dedication to showcasing world-class, no-reserve private collections,” says Rod Egan, principal and auctioneer for the company, which also holds The Pacific Grove Auction on the Monterey Peninsula in August, The Auburn Auction, during Labor Day Weekend in Indiana, and stand-alone auctions of significant private collections.

“We’ve been careful to provide cautious estimates that resulted in many sellers achieving above expected results,” reports Bonhams vice president of Motoring and auctioneer Rupert Banner.

Worldwide’s annual Scottsdale Auction in Singh Meadows, Tempe, included muscle cars, European sports and classics, concept cars and a private collection with exceptional pre-war cars. The sell-through was a strong 76 percent.

The second highest sale was a 1956 Chrysler Ghia Plainsman Concept Car, $742,500, a one-off show car built by Ghia of Italy, fully restored to its original western motif including genuine cow-hide interior.

At Barrett-Jackson, business leaders who were guests at the auction included General Motors Chairman and President Mary Barra, Bob Carter and Tony Vinciquerra. Entertainment stars stopped by, too: Cuba Gooding Jr., Kevin McCarthy, Tim Allen and Frankie Muniz.

Racing legends were everywhere: Don Prudhomme, John Force, Mark Martin, the Valley’s Arie Luyendyk, Scott Pruett, Paul Tracy, Ryan Blaney and Jeff Gordon, among others.

Two sports Hall of Famers, John Elway and Mariano Rivera, brought winning rides: the great Yankee reliever’s 2020 Toyota Supra Launch Edition (#1076) and the legendary quarterback’s 1992 Dodge Viper (#1025). Simon Cowell sold his 1977 Ford Bronco (#1025.3), $86,900, and 2009 Bentley Azure (#1301.2), $123,200.

Nine collections –– the most ever at Barrett-Jackson –– comprised 180-plus collector vehicles, all sold at No Reserve. The Paul Walker Collection set several auction records, including his 1995 BMW M3 Lightweight (#1371), generating $385,000 and more than doubling the auction record.

Craig Jackson also brought stellar vehicles from his fine collection. He unveiled his restored 1967 Shelby GT500 EXP ‘Little Red,’ which was discovered on March 3, 2018, in rural north Texas by a Jackson team including classic-car restoration specialist, Jason Billups. The Shelby prototype is one of the most sought-after vehicles in postwar history.

Jackson also displayed his 1968 Shelby GT500 prototype “Green Hornet.”

The two classics were joined by two classics-to-be, a one-ofone Candy Apple Green and a Rapid Red 2020 Shelby GT500, also owned by Jackson. The 2020 Green Hornet car was the first model (VIN 001) produced at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan last fall.

Jackson and Davis, Jim Owens, Ford Mustang Brand Manager, and Aaron Shelby, grandson of Carroll Shelby, simultaneously started the combined 2,600-horsepower cars.

The four-day Leake auction sold two charity vehicles. The first, a 2020 Gladiator IASO Rubicon Jeep, benefits the Austin Hatcher Foundation, which raises money for pediatric cancer research.

The Gladiator brought $145,000, and private donations from the crowd added $30,000 to this.

Russo and Steele: 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster sold for $1,045,000

A 2020 Indian Springfield Jack Daniel’s motorbike was sold three times during the Leake auction — twice the buyers asked that it be sold again — raising $130,000 for The Armed Forces YMCA and Jack Daniel’s Operation Ride Home.

The AZ Jet Center Event raised money for the Wings of Humanity, which provides no-cost medical ambulance flights –– “saving Children one flight at a time” –– as well as for the Sol Dog Lodge building, an Arizona campus for training, boarding and fostering dogs and training rescue dogs for service and support animals for our military veterans.

In addition, the event provided awareness and encouraged registration for the Donate Life Arizona, an organ donor registry.

“Members of the Jet Center Foundation team have seen the benefits of registering within our family,” says Scott Ingebretson, spokesman for the Jet Center Foundation. “We are proud to support all of these organizations.”

And, at Barrett Jackson, $7.63 million was raised through the sale of nine charity vehicles, including two VIN 001 vehicles: the first mid-engine Corvette, the 2020 Stingray VIN 001 (#3007), $3 million, and the first production 2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible Inspiration Series VIN 100001 (#3003), $2 million.

Built Peoria Ford Tough Pat Hickey brings a community-first approach to modern car sales at Peoria Ford written by Nick Esquer For decades, the world of car sales has been accented by wacky-waving inflatable arm displays and salesmen who stand outside the dealership ready to jump on the next deal.

Now, car buying has shifted to a consumer-friendly, customerfirst landscape where would-be car buyers dig in online and seek out as much information about a particular car they might buy. Even then, they may opt to purchase their next vehicle solely online and have it delivered, cutting out the need for salesmen altogether.

This tech-forward approach to making one of the most important and most expensive purchases of someone’s life is something that Pat Hickey, general manager of Peoria Ford, is taking in stride and using as a way to shape the way he does business and stays at the top of auto sales in the Greater Phoenix area.

Located just west of the 101 freeway along a veritable auto dealership row, Hickey’s Peoria Ford has been the numberone volume Ford dealership in the state for eight years.

Because of that, Ford gave the first open point in 18 years to Hickey, which became Surprise Ford located off the 303 and Waddell.

But this merit didn’t happen overnight. In fact, Hickey has been at this for decades, having started his career in 1990 at ABC Nissan before embarking on his own career as an influencer in the car sales market.

“I think that the key to success is processes and people,” Hickey notes, pointing to his approach to developing car sales professionals around him. “We keep refining our process and training our people. We don’t fake status quo and we want

to think of new ways to reinvent ourselves and how to get more value to the customer. It’s a big purchase so we want to create a lot of value for the customer.”

Hickey, a Valley native who graduated from Arizona State University with intentions of becoming a lawyer, took the opportunity to engage with the customer in a more hands-on, personable, and efficient way, cutting out the need for puffy sales tactics. This helped lead to his purchase of what is now Peoria Ford back in 2010. Since then, Hickey has seen dramatic growth in sales and other areas of the dealership including a budding fleet department that sells nearly 400 new units per month, and a state-of the-art service department complete with the latest equipment to get customers in and out quickly.

But a major emphasis that Hickey has cultivated at Peoria Ford is his devotion to developing true sales talent from a grassroots standpoint. The dealership employees nearly 250 individuals, including sales professionals who have to not only be able to converse with the customer but also have the knowledge that comes with this new age of car sales.

“We’re rewriting some of our processes for customer experience as we focus on touch points on how to speed up the deal and work on efficiency. We want to educate the salesmen a bit more on how to sell the car, and we want to create a million dollar presentation for a $30,000 car,” Hickey explains.

Dan Withers’ memorable classics are classic memories, too.

When he was 4 in Pittsburgh, his mom, June, saw a local ad placed by a man who wanted someone to transport a 1956 Cadillac hardtop to Phoenix. She arranged with the owner to make the journey so that she and the family could leave what was then a sooty rust-belt city. Her mother-in-law lived in Phoenix and often spoke of blue skies and year-long sun.

Dan’s dad was in Korea, serving with post-war troops.

Dan Withers never forgot that Caddy.

Today, the retired founder of D.L. Withers Construction looks down from the mezzanine of his 22-foot-ceiling showroom and warehouse in Tempe and enjoys his 45-car collection.

Purchased in 2014, the 30,000-square-foot garage is the third for his collection. The former restaurant supply space retains its exhibition kitchen, where cooking demonstrations were once held. He has parties here occasionally, most recently one honoring Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet. Withers recalls: “We had lots of haggis, Scotch and bagpipes!”

In his upsized man cave, he displays classics, resto-mods, hot rods, muscle cars, racers, exotics and supercars. Most are taken to shows, driven in rallies and raced.

“The collection is an eclectic group that represents many

different types and eras in the automobile industry,” he says.

“Much like the changes in the industry over the years, I’ve changed my focus, so you will see a wide range of types and years.”

He has no master plan. He's just committed to stewarding masterful cars.

Among the pre-war cars are a Good Guys Rod & Customwinning 1935 Ford 3-Window Custom Coupe; a 1940 Ford Woody Wagon from the acclaimed Pratt Collection in Chandler; and a multi-trophied 1948 Chevy Pro Mod truck that has put down 6-second quarters at 220 mph with a Kenny Duttweilerbuilt dual turbo and a Hughes Powerglide tranny. “Lots of fun,” he says.

Others include an award-winning 1952 Hudson Hornet, finished in original plum, which he purchased man to man from the owner at an Arizona Concours. Hornets stung regularly in early NASCAR, winning because of uni-body construction, a low center of gravity and drivers willing to push them to their potential. “Wayne Carini almost bought it two years ago,” Withers recalls. “It’s big and well appointed. You can get four adults in the back seat. I know; I’ve done it.”

From the 1960s is a spectacular resto-mod yellow “Aluminator” from Detroit Speed Shop. “It’s a ‘69 Camaro that looks like stock on the outside, including black racing stripes, but packs

a 900-horsepower motor and suspension underneath,” Withers says. “We detuned it to 650 horses plus to keep it manageable.”

Also in the Withers collection are two 1969 American Motors Scramblers, “Johnny Lighting,” with the original 390-cid powerplant, and a beautiful replica equipped with a 502-cid crate motor that does 8-second quarters. Dan: “The guy who I bought the first car from comes to visit it. Last time he was here, he saw the re-creation for the first time and cried.”

And, from the decade of muscle cars, he has a pristine Chevy 409/409, also from the Ron Pratt Collection, and two Resto Mods, a 1967 Nova and a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville, built by the inimitable Gabe’s Interiors of San Bernardino. In addition, he has a one-year-wonder 1963 black split-window Vette.

Generally an uninspiring decade for American high performance, the ’80s are eloquently spoken for by two Buick Grand Nationals, a GNX, #221 (of 547) with just 68 miles, and a drag car built by the great Duttweiler, which has run low 9s.

From the ’90s is the first-year 1991 Acura NSX, a rare automatic car (one of 208 made), and a 2017, when the model

reappeared. “I took the first one right out of Bell Honda and drove it up to Jerome through all of the switchbacks. When the new one came out, I had to have it; I love it, a great rally car and comfortable ergonomically,” he says.

Recently, Withers has joined Porsche enthusiasts, with a 2015 918, a hypercar brandishing 2.2-second 0–60 performance, and a 520-horse 911 GTS RS, which he regularly drives to, from and at the APEX Motor Club track in nearby Maricopa.

“It’s amazing,” he says. “I can take it from here in the showroom 30 minutes south to the track, run it for as long and hard as I want and drive it back without issues. Porsche really has the track cars figured out.”

Three trailers, one a 48-foot IKON behemoth with a 13-speed automatic, ensures safe multi-car delivery to tracks throughout the West, Texas to Vegas to Pomona. For every day he drives a Chevy Denali. “Well, I’m a contractor,” he says with a smile.

“The other day, I finished up a phone call that wasn’t all that pleasurable, but I immediately looked down at the collection,” he recalls. “Life, I said to myself, isn’t too bad after all.”

When the family arrived in Phoenix six decades ago, his mom waitressed at the original Bill Johnson’s Big Apple restaurant on Van Buren Street in downtown Phoenix. After he left the service, his dad worked at another landmark Valley building, the Motorola Plant on McDowell Road.

Success and a life-long passion for cars brought him to his first collector car in 2000, a 1947 Lincoln Continental. “It was not a good example, and I sold it for a loss,” he recalls. “After that, I decided to buy quality cars even if they cost a little more. I’ve never gone wrong with that decision.”

He knows the value of a dollar and parts interchangeability.

His parents had 1955 and 1956 Chevy’s, but the cars rarely ran simultaneously. “They swapped parts to keep them running,” he recalls.

Dan’s Drives

He graduated from Mesa High School; he began drag racing.

Three decades or so later, he started visiting the track again, in a 1957 Chevy Bel Air: He was 17 again.

Off the track, he completed a bachelor’s of Science at the ASU Construction School in 1974. “I was lucky to be one of those people who found his major and career very early,” he recalls.

He picked right: “I just liked the business and the people.”

After working for companies in California and Phoenix, he founded D.L. Withers Construction in 1981, focusing on commercial building. Noted for his quality work and personal service, the company flourished, peaking at 150 employees.

For years, the company ranked in the ENR Top 200 Contractors in the U.S. His company’s community efforts have been

•1932 Ford Highboy Roadster –– Get your goggles out and a shovel! On August 21, 1954, the all-steel coupe was clocked at 142.97 mph at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. Built by Miller Automotive, Chino, California, the car displays a tarnished dash-mounted commemorative brass plaque from the Southern California Timing Association certifying this. The owner returned to the Salt Flats the following year but couldn’t best the clocking.

Withers knows why. “I’ve had it up to 75 mph, and it’s scary.

It’s basic and bare bones, a very unforgiving car,” he says, hardly a tenderfoot Saturday-afternoon racer. He’ll show you the ragtop’s few options: sand dusting the driver’s floorboard and dried-up, crumpled-up newspaper bits.

The sand is from Wildwood beach in New Jersey, where he participated twice in the Race of Gentlemen for cars 1934 and older, an event then held in June but now in September.

“It’s a drag race in the sand; when you launch, half the beach blows forward, and what doesn’t go down the back of your neck goes onto the floor,” he recalls, scooping a handful to demonstrate.

He’s been able to read enough of the worn paper to know it’s from 1948 and somewhere in California. “That’s the insulation for the car,” he says, showing you some that’s been stored in a glass jar. “I’m going to humiditize it at some time, flatten it out and read the paper.”

The racer has a 221-cid flathead V-8, with Offenhauser heads, Stromberg trips and a Harman Collins magneto, Halibrand quick-change axle and Stewart Warner gauges. A well-patinaed blue covers the body.

Bob Petersen of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles acquired the car and kept it until 2013, selling it to a private collector. Withers bought it at RM Monterey in 2016; he promptly refreshed the engine and electricals.

By these terms alone, the late Boyd Coddington was real: He cut, chopped and chiseled classics into neo-classics such as Chezoom, CadZZilla and this one, the Withers collection centerpiece. They helped make Hot Rods by Boyd in Whittier, California, legendary in magazines, car shows and on television.

“People such as Boyd and his student, Chip Foose, imagineered some of the most appreciated hot rods and resto-mods of our time,” Withers explains, noting that his collection also contains Foose’s reimagined 1934 Ford/1999 Prowler once owned by hotelier Dick Marriott. Ken Lingenfelter installed the LS1 engine and drivetrain.

“I even got a 1932 Arizona license plate from someone locally,” he says pointing to the well-worn one on the back. It looks sand blasted.

Purchased by Withers in 2018 at the Monterey RM auction, "Lead Zephyr" was Coddington’s come-back car after his client-forced bankruptcy, Withers notes. He started with a John Tjarrda-designed 1938 Ford Zephyr and made it even more worthy of the Greek god of the mild west wind (“Zephyrus”) than the original, with sinuous lines that changed the car world.

•1938 Lincoln “Lead Zephyr” –– “I started collecting as a purist and wanted only cars that were restored to their original condition with a high quality of workmanship in mind,” Withers recalls. “I would never think of cutting up at car at the time.

But later I realized that original cars can be modified and

Marcel and Sons first shaped the bare steel, working with Coddington. Then, he fitted an Art Morrison chassis and built an air-suspension system. A 430-cid/500-horsepower Ford block was connected to an AO6 automatic, Coddington steering wheel, wheels and gauges.

Finally, Coddington sprayed the car with Dupont Char-cool and Body Mellow Yellow, and Gabe’s Custom Upholstery finished the interior and trunk. Voilà, automotive history.

Withers is the seventh owner of the matching-numbers classic.

Renowned marque expert Paul Russell looked after it prior to Withers’ purchase, a key reason for its outstanding condition.

“Look at the details,” Withers notes. “The gapping is perfect, and the ridge line running across the hood and top is fabulous.

He even molded a drip line off the top,” he says, pointing.

“The night after I acquired it, I got some Corona, sat down by the driver’s door and just looked for hours.”

He drives it regularly and is frequently seen at APEX Motorsports, Phoenix International Raceway, the Copperstate 1000 and the 300SL Classic. He's even had it in Israel for the Holyland 1000. Following acceptance, he hopes to drive it in the famed Mille Miglia in two years.

•1955 Mercedes 300SL–– This fine, unrestored example of the 1,400 “Gullwings” produced through 1957 has the rare limited-production NSL motor, a 3-liter straight six with 240 horsepower and 202 lb/ft of torque linked to a 3-speed manual.

These engines were standard in the 28 all-alloy versions of the hardtop but were optional otherwise. Weighing in light at 2,890 pounds, the supercar was the day’s fastest production vehicle, topping out at a potent 146 mph.

“I’ve spent hours in it. It has a lot of power and I don’t have to worry about it mechanically,” he says. “I love it.”

Famed Steve’s Restorations of Portland, Oregon, created the steel-bodied car for the former owner, Dave Hall of Ahwatukee, a foothills Phoenix community. “I told him he can visit the car whenever he wants to,” says Withers, who purchased it in August 2006. “The NewMad is a true work of art from some of the best metal craftsmen in the business,” said Hall in a 2002 interview with Hagerty.

A great driver at 4,672 pounds, it’s fully optioned, with the 305-horse V-8 and “Batwing” dual quads, air-conditioning, allleather interior, signal-seeking radio, power windows and sixway power seats. “It even has the Autronic high-beam eye.

They didn’t work then, and this one doesn’t now,” he says, with a bright smile below a white fedora matching the interior. ***

Steve’s placed a 496-cid Arias aluminum big block, good for 540 horses and 565 lb/ft of torque, and a Hughes transmission.

Budnik Wheels were chosen.

“It’s won every award a steel car can get and recently was shown at Pomona,” Withers says. “With the Buick GNX and the Lead Zephyr, it’s one of the three cars I don’t drive. Here, it gets standing applause every day.”

•1956 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible –– When Withers saw this car at Barrett-Jackson in January 2001, he had to own it. Not only did the ragtop recall the sedan from the same year he came West in when he was 4 but also because it was magnificently redone by the former owner, Eddie Daur of Sunrise, Florida, who has another ’56, Marilyn Monroe’s.

Withers got into a bidding war that the auction crowd reinforced with their encouragement –– “They got louder and louder” –– and he took it home.

“It’s been judged a 99-point car, and I have shown it many times and won many awards,” he says. These include a First Place at one of the Arizona Concours events and a Grand National from the Antique Automobile Club in 1998.

Withers is often asked about his favorite. “My response has been that it’s really about the experience. They are all unique,” he explains. “Many of these cars represent new and creative perspectives on the automobile. Some are like sitting in a time capsule from the past. Others are about the challenge and exhilaration of their performance.”

They connect us with the past and with other car lovers.

“Today we all have some relationship with the automobile that include memories both good and bad. It’s a way to connect with my past. Everyone that comes to the garage finds a favorite that always includes a memory.”

The cars have also taught him from their long experience.

“We’re not their owners,” he says. “We’re the caretakers.”

JK- Aside from growing in my car collector hobby, I also am a competitive cyclist on the road & track including 17 state championships and 4 podiums at national championships. I used to be a pretty competitive golfer, getting down to a 3.8 handicap at one point, but rusty now.

Highline- Tell us a little bit about your collection and how you got into Lamborghini in particular?

JK- I grew up in a car family who primarily liked 50-60’s classic and muscle cars. Currently, I have a 1988.5 Lamborghini Countach 5000QV in white/red, a 1998 Lamborghini Diablo SV Monterey Edition which is #20 of only 20 made in blue/ cream, and a 2016 Lamborghini Aventador SV roadster. We are building a new house which will house up to 12 cars and I am going to continue to grow the collection focusing on V12 cars, preferably more rare ones, and wanting them in all colors of the rainbow! I have gravitated towards Lamborghini because I like the aggressive and flamboyant nature of the brand.

Highline- If you can pick a favorite out of your collection which car is it and why?

JK- For now, it’s the Aventador SV roadster as it is the most outlandish look combined with the most powerful engine in an open top!

Highline- If you were planning on adding to your collection what would you buy and why?

JK- The future will see a Murcielago SV, a Ferrari F12 & FF, and an Aston Martin V12 Vantage.

Pagani Imola Limited-run, just five models built Named after the racetrack on which it was modeled and fine-tuned, the new Pagani Imola is a roadworthy Hypercar with a wholly racing temperament that embodies the maximum expression of Pagani Automobili’s track technology.

With a limited edition of only five examples built, the Pagani Imola has gone through the severest on-track validation test ever applied to a Pagani car. In addition to the regular and already scrupulous validation process, in fact, Imola has covered over 9,900 miles on the track at racing speed – the equivalent to about three times the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

A vehicle-laboratory A major step forward in the technological and scientific progress of Pagani Automobili, the Pagani Imola is a vehiclelaboratory where important innovations have been devised, tested and developed. Some of these have been used in the Roadster BC and will be a feature of Pagani’s future creations.

Experimenting is an inborn part of Pagani Automobili’s research philosophy. The training experience we acquired back in 2008 with the Zonda R proved priceless since it

enabled us to create the Huayra using solutions tested in extreme conditions. At that time, we came up with revolutionary ideas like the Carbo-Titanium chassis, as well as geometries, materials and concepts that were hitherto unheard of from the aerodynamic, dynamic and supercar-safety viewpoints. Working in partnership with Pirelli, we developed tires for the Zonda R using the new MIRS system, subsequently applied to the Huayra and Formula 1 race cars.

Similarly, once we had laid down the initial specifications, we worked on the Imola project in a very open-minded way and with the utmost freedom from the technical viewpoint in our efforts to integrate the innovations as the vehicle took shape.

Pagani Imola uses the active aerodynamics system introduced by the Huayra, the first road vehicle ever to be equipped with this technology.
