Diversity and depth: The docket for the 49th-annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction at WestWorld January 11–19, 2020, includes almost 1,800 cars at No Reserve, representing stand-out collections, professionally built and documented Resto-Mods, vintage American muscle, supercars, luxury imports, other blue-chip collector vehicles and charity cars.

The first event in the company’s year-long “Road to 50” celebration, Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale will offer marquee cars such as a Verde Mantis-finished 2017 Ford GT (Lot #1417) and a 2019 McLaren Senna (Lot #1393), both representing the Scott Thomas Collection, and five 1995 BMW M3 Lightweights (Lots #1371, #1372, #1372.1, #1373, #1373.1) from the collection of the late actor and car enthusiast, Paul Walker –– probably the first time a quintet of these has been offered simultaneously.

In addition to a week of car activity, attendees will experience 250 sponsors and exhibitors and 100-plus food vendors.

New for the 2020 Scottsdale Auction is the Barrett-Jackson Performance Track, which will feature Thrill Rides and Hot Laps from Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota, which is bringing its new Supra.

“My father and mother, Russ and Nellie, and their business partner, Tom, began Barrett-Jackson as a community fundraiser for a local library now almost five decades ago, and this small event has grown into an international brand,” says Craig Jackson, CEO and chairman of Scottsdale-based Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.

The Walker collection also includes an Alpine White 1991 BMW E30 M3 (Lot #1371.1) powered by the motorsportderived S14 inline-4 rated at 195 horsepower, and a 1995 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer Edition (Lot #731) with the 5.8-liter 351-cid Windsor V-8.

Featuring early-production and limited-production supercars, the Scott Thomas Collection is led by three McLarens, a 2015 Le Mans edition (Lot #1394), a 2016 (#1295) and the 2019 honoring the great F1 champion Ayrton Senna, one of only 500 manufactured and 120 imported to the United States.

The street-legal hypercar has a mid-mounted 789-horsepower V-8 and delivers 0-to-60-mph sprints in 2.8 seconds, quarter miles in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph.

A 2003 Saleen S7 (Lot #1397) is one of only 78 produced, and a fifth-gen 2013 Dodge Viper GTS VIN 001 (Lot #1398) is powered by an all-aluminum V-10 engine capable of producing 640 horsepower. And, a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Custom Coupe (Lot #1007.1), has a GM LS3 6.2-liter crate engine with a 4-speed automatic.

Among these are a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible (Lot #1449) and a 1967 Ford Mustang Eleanor Tribute Edition (Lot #1317.1), a celebration of the classic car in Gone in 60 Seconds starring Nicholas Cage.

A 1957 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible (Lot #1377), carries a 7.0-liter LS7 engine mated to a TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission and rides on custom ultra-wide Asanti wheels stopped by massive Baer brakes front and back.

The Jeff Hayes Customs, a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible (Lot #1367) and the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split-Window Custom Coupe (Lot #1363), are both on Art Morrison sport chassis and fitted with LS3 8-cylinder Hot Cam engines, 4L70E automatic overdrive transmissions, Vintage Air and Wilwood disc brakes.

“Resto-Mods emphasize performance while retaining as much of a stock look as possible, turning a classic into a modern performance machine,” Davis says. “Nearly all these modernized machines are built with the purpose of breathing a second life into the vehicle as a reliable and streetable driver.”

Other Chevrolet-based Resto-Mods include a 1951 Chevrolet 3100 Custom Pickup (Lot #1351) propelled by a 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 with a rear-mounted 6-speed automatic. A 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Custom Convertible (Lot #1325) has Parchment Corinthian leather interior and features a supercharged LS3 6.2-liter V-8 connected to a 4-speed automatic.

Fords, Ford GTs and Ford Shelbys Helping to celebrate the film Ford v Ferrari appearing worldwide starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, Fords will be well represented, from early muscle-car classics to eleven Ford GTs. “The 1-2-3 Le Mans win by Ford and Shelby in 1966 is one of the greatest success stories in racing history,” Jackson says. “Not only did Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles, led by Lee Iacocca and Henry Ford II, dethrone Ferrari at Le Mans, they also inspired generations to believe that anything is possible.”

In all, ten Ford GTs are consigned to cross the Scottsdale auction block, including a 2005 VIN 003 (Lot #1396), the first 2005 Ford GT offered to the public for sale, from the Scott Thomas Collection. Completed on June 29, 2004, this GT carries VIN 003 and features Carroll Shelby’s autograph on the dash.

A 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition (Lot #1353.1) bears the famous Gulf livery celebrating the 1966 Le Mans-winning GT40. It’s one of only 343 produced and has just 2,384 actual miles. From the Matt Furukawa Collection is a 2006 (Lot #1353) with only 29 miles. And, a 2017 (Lot # 1392), from the collection of a retired Ford Motor Company exec, is finished in Liquid Red with Frozen White racing stripes and has just 141 miles.

Driving cars together on the track, riding dirt bikes, driving our RZR UTV on the off-road track, and even exploring the beautiful surrounding area on our mountain bikes--the range of activities at the ranch is near endless. There is something magical about sharing these kinds of experiences with your entire family,” says member Mark Russell. “There’s a strong sense of community here; we call it the ‘Inde family’, which includes the members, staff and owners. We have made some truly great friends since joining IMR, and it is such a blessing to be able to enjoy all that Inde has to offer with all of these fine people!”

Powell was raised around cars, heading to the tracks with his dad, racing everything from go-karts to formula cars. For Powell, it was a blend of his passion for cars and sharing something with his dad that created an emotional connection to Inde.

"When Inde was first starting in 2010, my dad and I heard about the track and went down to see it. From our first visit we were hooked and began consistently racing throughout the year." he notes. "Many of our members have done the same and use Inde as an escape for their friends and family.

That's the kind of experience we want to create."

Phoenix Metro Most Recent: High-End Luxury-Home Report written by David M. Brown What makes a luxury home sale a solid transaction for the seller or the buyer in Maricopa County, Arizona? When isn’t a sale good for one or the other? Did the buyer pay too much; could the seller have gotten more money? Here’s our perspective on what went right, what went wrong.

In 2019, 16 homes recorded above $7 million, almost four times greater than 2018 numbers in booming Maricopa County, an acceptable estate-level starting point for area closings. Frank Aazami, Global Advisor, and principal of the Private Client Group, Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale, recently evaluated these sales based on location, size, acreage, age condition, future salability, amenities plus other circumstances such as orientation, access and floor plan.

Of the approximately 98,000 Multiple Listing Service Sold properties in 2019, these single-family homes represent an ethereal territory where only the wealthy venture. With about 70 percent of the sales, in fact, were “all cash”, and just more than 50 percent were out-of-state buyers.

“The first thing you notice from the concentration of sales is that they are in Paradise Valley, specifically east of Tatum Boulevard, and Silverleaf in north Scottsdale, with the remainder at Desert Mountain in far north Scottsdale east of Carefree/Cave Creek,” Aazami explains. “These continue to be the premium areas in the Valley of the Sun, including other luxury communities such as Estancia and DC Ranch.

Sculpting His Future Dr. Remus Repta expands his vision with revamped plastic surgery office written by Stephanie Fogelson The city of Scottsdale is known for its clean streets, great nightlife, penchant for art galleries, and sunny views of Camelback Mountain. Outside of the state, it’s also known as a landing spot for talented and passionate medical professionals in the plastic surgery field, looking to break free from the confines of a hospital and open up their own private practice.

In fact, Scottsdale sits at number four in the nation when it comes to plastic surgeons per capita, squeezed in between the D.C. suburb of Richmond, Virginia, and Miami, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. One of those plastic surgery professionals who’s already made his mark is Dr. Remus Repta, an accomplished veteran of the craft who’s set to open the doors to his second location in Scottsdale this spring.

Initially born in Romania and moving to the US when he was eight, he completed his medical school training in Portland Oregon and plastic surgery residency in Michigan before moving to Scottsdale to start his own practice.

During the last 11 years in Scottsdale, Dr. Repta has become one of the most recognized plastic surgeons in his field.

While helping to take care of injured patients by providing his expertise to local hospitals such as Honor Health, Dr Repta also realized the importance of controlling the patient experience and the role of the outpatient surgery center

would play. He started building his first surgery center in 2010 and now has done it again with a new state of the art facility in the heart of old-town Scottsdale.

“When you take on a project like a surgery center, you take on a lot of risk and a lot of extra work balanced by the opportunity to control the entire aspect of patient experience,” he notes. “You first have to ask yourself honestly why are you building a surgery center and for what immediate and future purpose will it serve. The hard part then becomes getting the right team together and staying focused on the goal.”

To mitigate timeline and budget risk, Dr. Repta, knew that he needed to select a construction and design team that had a history together and had built a project like this previously.

It is clean, uncluttered, expansive, and focused on functionality. It has to be almost like a blank canvas.”

A Diamond in the Desert Local jeweler Ethan Pajak of Louis XV explains his humble approach to his craft written by Nick Esquer The name Louis XV might bring to mind visions of opulence, regal French courts, and unmatched luxury. If this is the case, you wouldn’t be wrong. The real Louis XV, who reigned over France in the 1700s, was known for his affinity for nice things and decadent jewelry. His frivolous grip on money, however, ended up leading to the country’s financial downfall, which, in turn, inspired the French Revolution of 1789.

After the two discussed possible business opportunities, Pajak found himself exchanging pliers for pendants.

He even built the original showroom the first pieces were housed in.

“I have a 1964 Coupe DeVille, but my family is my priority.

I have to put that stuff on hold until they’re older. I find beauty in all vehicles, every generation from the 30’s up until the modern stuff,” he notes.

“I’m a genuine guy who stumbled into jewelry and it comes with a lot of interesting people who may take advantage of others who don’t know what’s going on. I just try to be myself as someone who takes care of others,” he explains.

The Phillips opened the first Toy Barn ten years ago to meet demand from downsizing home owners or people who could use more space for their “toys.”

Started in 2009 by Phoenix-based father and son, Paul and Jason Phillips, Toy Barn provides luxury garage spaces for cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, jet skis and RVs. The premium storage units are individually owned, similar to a condominium, governed by CC&Rs and an owners association. Prices are $185,000 to $570,000.

“We want to build a community at the different Toy Barn locations, almost like a country club,” he adds. “It’s rewarding to see the groups come together, make friends and bond over similar interests and hobbies.”

The Chandler Toy Barn, 2165 South Douglas Drive, will include three buildings with 66 units, and the Phoenix Toy Barn, 31606 North Cave Creek Road, will comprise 59 units in 66,000 square feet, including covered-parking options.

As Steve Sunshine tells it, all of his children have exhaust pipes.

“Cars are a passion, an addiction, a disease,” says the New York native, Scottsdale resident ––and car lover wherever he is. “They are an incurable, wonderful disease that will make you happy, make you crazy, make you scream, sometimes all at once.”

In the seat, it’s man versus machine. “It’s being in control, making the perfect gear change, kicking the rear end loose in a corner and steering with your right foot. No electronics, no radios, nothing. Just me and the car. Ah, blissful.”

He has nine cars in his garages, some of which he keeps at his north Scottsdale home, others in his friend’s “secret shop” in Gilbert, a half hour or so south, where he assists on special projects. The collection represents a half century of automobiles, including 1954, 1961 and 1964 Jaguars, 1964 and 1967 Sunbeam Tigers and a 1994 Jeff Burton NASCAR Rookie of the Year T-Bird which he raced, sold, and has now been reunited with to sell again for its current owner.

With a hardy 106,000 miles, a 2003 911 C4S still revs to 7,200 rpm, and a 1999 F-150 sleeper hot rod truck does 12.5-second quarters, he says. Wife Lesli adores her 2018 Mercedes G550, the last year of the square design. “This is her love affair with an automobile,” he notes, with a smile.

Sunshine began his car passion at 6 in ’61. He was living in native Brooklyn, New York, “where you could walk ten blocks and never leave the scene of a crime,” he recalls. At the New York Auto Show that year, he saw the reveal of the Jaguar E-Type, which many, including Enzo Ferrari at the time, believe is the most beautiful car ever. He has two parked safely in the garage for eye, hand and foot pleasure.

Long Island, they went car shopping. “At a Ford dealer looking at everyday sedans, I heard a rumble in the lot,” he recalls.

“A 427 Cobra just got delivered, and I remember the rumble going through me.”

He never forgot that shake, rattle and roll: “I knew I would have to have one.” He did, in 1998, and he raced the Cobra throughout the country. “Realizing that this was a dangerous car and a dangerous hobby, I decided to be a little safer and buy the Burton Winston Cup car that is now for sale.”

Lesli saw the danger, too.

When he was doing more racing than he does now, she would be in the pit before he went out for the first race. She’d ask one question, he recalls: “Did you pay the premium on the life insurance?” He always replied “yes.” And she said, “Good, go faster, I want to see better lap times!”

Simply Obsessed Since his early days, Sunshine “was obsessed with cars and knew every one that passed by.” He started tinkering when he was 15. “I learned how to tune them, pull motors and gear boxes and generally get dirty. We did street racing even before I got a license.”

Without a break, this has stayed with him. “I’ve built them, raced them, fabricated parts for them, bought, sold, brokered them, and stayed married through all of it,” he says. He met Lesli on a blind date in New York City in 1990, three decades ago this year.

His first ride was dad’s 1965 Oldsmobile 98 LS sedan, with the 425-cid four-barrel engine. On Long Island, dad would park the division’s flagship at the train station and leave the keys under the mat. “I used to take the car at age 15, no license, nothing. I’d smoke a cigarette to look older and go

drag racing. Then, I put the car back at the station.

“Sometimes I didn’t get the same spot, and he would come home saying, ‘I must be working too hard. I couldn’t find my car at first when I got off the train.’ I think he knew, but we never talked about it.”

Sunshine graduated from Suffolk University in Boston in 1978 with a criminology degree. “I learned how to stay out of jail,” he notes, chuckling.

Since 1979, he’s been collecting, buying and selling some of the world’s’ most important sport and race cars of the 1950s and 60s, focusing on the Shelby Cobra, Ferrari and Jaguar.

His largest sale was a numbers-matching $28-million 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa (stevesunshineclassic cars.com).

In 1981, he started collecting with a 1963 340-horsepower solid-lifter Corvette, Sebring Silver on black interior. “It was also my last Corvette, a neat car, but I got bit by the Cobra bug, and it was full steam ahead into Shelby Cobras after that.

“The cars I collect I love to look at and drive,” he explains.

“They bring me back to a place and time.”

He’s not a “car show” guy although he is a staple at all the major concours. More importantly, it’s the seat experience, each time different, even in the same car, at races. “When I get in a car, my world turns to black and white. No radios, nothing but me and machine. I visualize the rotating assembly of the motor running. When asked why I don’t bring them to more shows, I usually say, ‘My car show is in my garage and on the highway.’”

Shining in the Sunshine Here are some of those places and times: •1954 Jaguar XK 120 “SE” –– This is a previously one-familyowned car with the original paint, Birch Grey on Red, paperwork, including the tags, bill of sale and original cancelled check.

As an “SE,” the classic Jag delivers 180 horsepower from its flat-6 engine (stock was 160 horses) and has dual exhausts instead of the basic single.

An Indianapolis man, Robert Koschnick, purchased it from the well-known Max Hoffman Car Company in Chicago on September 18, 1954, for $3,445, a substantial amount of money for a car then.

“It remained in the family until 2012, when I purchased it at the Gooding Monterey Auction,” Sunshine says. He’s had it since.

With just beyond 61,000 miles, the Jag has an “actual mileage” title and has never been raced. He took it to the first Arizona Concours at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, receiving a Preservation Class award.

One original dent remains in the rear driver’s side fender.

“The owner was so upset, he banged it out himself. I decided to leave it as it is; it’s barely noticeable and a part of the car’s history.”

•1964 Sunbeam Mk1 Tiger –– This is a first-year production car, #460, purchased new by privateer racer Bob Spears and

titled in his mother’s name. “I am restoring it back to original race configuration to compete again,” Sunshine says, noting it’s in California for body and paint.

Soon after purchasing the Tiger, Spears converted it to go racing. Sunshine has his license, log book, driving suit, helmet, and 1st-place SCCA trophies. “It’s probably the most documented race Tiger from a privateer in existence,” he says.

In the SCCA Regionals Bob placed 1st. In the SCCA National, Bob came in 3rd behind Bob Tullius and Bob Sharp.

“That’s not bad for an amateur on a shoe-string budget,” Sunshine says.

•1967 Sunbeam Tiger –– This authenticated 23,000-mile survivor has the original red paint, and Sunshine has the bill of sale and paperwork.

The MK1-A has the original 260-cubic-inch Ford V-8 with a two-barrel carb; this has never been out of the car. “I spoke with the original owner, and he said he liked the rare magnesium Halibrand Wheels and had the dealer put them on after he agreed to buy the car.”

This is the same color combo as the car in the vintage television series Get Smart; it was driven by agent Maxwell Smart (he wasn’t), smartly played by Don Adams. Every

opening segment, he jumps out of the Sunbeam to meet with “Chief” about his next assignment, paired with Agent 99, the statuesque Barbara Feldon, who inexplicably loves the bumbling Agent 86. Maybe it was his Tiger.

The original sale consummated August 31, 1968, for $3,200. Sunshine found it listed on eBay in Florida. “When it didn’t sell, I went to see it and could not leave without it.”

•1961 Jaguar E-Type Coupe –– “I was in love with the E-Type Coupe ever since it came out in 1961. I had the Matchbox, the plastic models, the magazines and anything related to it as a child.”

His parents were not wealthy, so a new one was not possible.

“But, my mother said if I made a good college, circa 1972, she would buy me a used Jaguar coupe as my going-away present. Just prior to that, my father received a ‘stock tip’ from a neighbor, and he lost all of our money. Of course, I never got the car and had to wait.”

“In 2005, I was turning 50, and there it was, a gorgeous restored 1961 Gunmetal Grey on eBay. The photos weren’t great, but it looked the part.

“I knew this was going to be a gamble if I bought it as I

only had two days to bid. I ended up losing the car to a higher bidder, but I sent a message to the buyer, which you could do in the early years of eBay, and it turned out to be a dealer I knew. He said he would make me a deal.

“He was on the West coast, I was on the East and had to send his driver to pick it up in the middle and then head to the East coast to pick up an additional car. The deal was, he would let his driver bring me the car to inspect for $1,000. If I didn’t like the car, I lose the $1,000 for the look-see. If I did like it, I could have it for $x profit to him over the eBay auction and I get free shipping. Deal.”

The car was better than he expected. “Knowing the story with all the emotions attached, Lesli bought me the car,” he says. “It was not only my greatest birthday present but the only car that will never be for sale.”

It was first purchased as one of the first 1961 coupes to arrive in California by Sidney Rosenberg, who owned American Building Maintenance, a company founded in 1909 by his father. Rosenberg was also a co-owner of the San Francisco Giants.

He drove the car until about 1963 for 18,000 or so miles, and then the car went up on blocks until 1978. Rosenberg’s friend, Bob McIntyre, purchased it and commissioned a wellknown Jag restorer to bring it back to new. It won 1st place at the Newport Concours in 1992 and was later showed at the first New York City Concours d’Elegance in Central Park in 2005.

The Jag has never been raced. The 35,000-mile original engine is being refreshed. Sunshine: “Great paperwork, great story; the motor’s out but even then it’s incredible to look at.”

•1964 E-Type Roadster –– The show car includes the rare hard top and factory competition wire wheels. Just finished, this was a one-owner car purchased from the original family.

Sunshine showed it at the most recent Quail event in California.

The car was purchased from the son of the original purchaser; he wasn’t a car guy. Sunshine commissioned a new painter in Pennsylvania to do the body and the paint, Matthew Zielenback of Convenience Collision. “He is just amazing. No one can believe how incredible this car came out,” he says. “I think this is the best one in the world.”

•Jeff Burton’s NASCAR 1994 Rookie-of-the-Year-winning Raybestos Ford T-Bird –– The car was used in the two Winston Cup races that year by Burton, who competed for Stavola Brothers Racing Team of New Jersey. It’s a full NASCAR-spec 358-cubic-inch Ford Motor with a Jerico 4speed gearbox. “In 1994 the horsepower was about 750.

With today’s builds you get more,” Sunshine says.

In 2007 or so, he sold the car to Valley resident, racer and real estate agent Mark Furcini and is selling it for him. In 2009, Furcini found Sunshine his second home in Scottsdale. He and Lesli moved permanently in July of 2018.

“We love it in Arizona,” he says. “And, no, I don’t get hot in the summer.”

Highline- Tell us a little bit about yourself (passions, hobbies, work related)?

CB- I grew up in an Automobile Dealer family and I enjoy all types of motor vehicles. In 1968 father Bud Beck founded the original Pontiac-GMC dealership here in Scottsdale which I took over in the 1980's. I founded the first KIA dealership in Scottsdale. I sold both dealerships in 1999 and became a Chevron dealer and I'm an owner/operator for them to this day. I've been a pilot in both fixed wing and helicopter aircraft for over 40 years. Flew on the Firebirds Aerobatic Team, as the Airshow Demonstration Pilot for the Stoddard-Hamilton Aircraft Company, and earned the title of "Arizona Unlimited Aerobatic Champion" 3 times. I ride both dirt and street motorcycles and love to boat. Obviously I enjoy high performance cars and the wonderful people I've met in the exotic car world.

Highline- Tell us a little bit about your collection and how you got into the Ford GTs in particular?

CB- When I was 9 years old in 1965 my father was the General Manager of Chase Morsey's Paradise Ford here in Scottsdale. On two occasions he brought home brand new Shelby Cobras and took me for a drive. One weekend at the dealership with my father there was a 1965 GT-40 Mark II on display in the show room. It was one of a number of cars the Ford Motor Company sent around the country to put on display at dealerships for a period of time. I didn't get to go for a drive but I did sit in it and thought it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. I told myself I would buy one someday. When I got out of college and found out they only built 134 of those cars in the 1960s and how rare and expensive they were, my ownership hopes faded. But when I found out in 2004 that Ford was going to bring back a new version of the Ford GT that looked just like the originals with even better performance, I had my chance. After looking at all of the colors online I knew I wanted a Speed Yellow GT with black stripes which I acquired new in 2006. I had no desire to own any other exotic car until Ford announced in 2015 that they would be building another new GT in order to go back and race at Le Mans. Having been very involved in the nationwide Ford GT community as moderator of David Bannister's Ford GT Forum.com I went through the stringent application process just like over 7000 other applicants for the first 500 cars Ford committed to build. I was granted an allocation (the first one in the Phoenix area) and had my new GT custom painted at the factory in the same shade of Speed Yellow as my 2006 GT. It is the only new GT that's been painted that color. In addition to my two Ford GT's I have a beautiful vintage 1992 air cooled Porsche 964. It is painted Grand Prix White with a Marine Blue leather interior. The old air cooled 911's are slow and wonky by today's standards but I love that little car as, unlike my GT's, it's fun to drive at speeds that won't land me in jail!

Renovating Luxury Homes: Plan, Budget and Consult Professionals written by David M. Brown Luxury homes are an investment and a showcase of success.

In the Valley of the Sun, the market is excellent for buyers wanting to enjoy a home full or part time or to invest in for a flip or holding until later. And, sellers might want to consider their options for how much money they want to invest into renovating a property to help secure their targeted closing price.

In particular, buyers must understand that the luxury process is a unique one before beginning the journey: “Most buyers fail to find out how much and how long it’ll take to sell the luxury home they are investing in,” says Frank Aazami, Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty Brand Ambassador, who recommends that they consult first with a proven luxury specialist.

Broadly, renovations can be light, say, a house face-lift; moderate; or complete, explains Tanya Shively, ASID, LEED AP, principal of Scottsdale’s Sesshu Design Associates, named for the 15th-century Japanese artist, Sesshu Toyo. She has been practicing interior design for 20-plus years, with a large percentage of her projects large and small renovations. In addition, she has locally pioneered sustainable, or green, design.

updated to new styles, technology and finishes. Plumbing also stays put but can be updated. Walls are painted or possibly gain new plaster or paper.

Flooring often remains the same material but in a fresh color palette, for example, stone, from travertine to marble or limestone, or ceramic tile to porcelain. Or, carpeting changes to wood or vinyl planks. You can recover or refinish furniture and add new pieces. And, window coverings are often updated for fresh styling.

“The main idea is that we can create a completely fresh look with just updating materials and fixtures,” Shively says.

Moderate renovations, however, are more intensive. These involve small modifications to spaces, such as removing the wall between kitchen and family room to create today’s open floorplan. Small changes to plumbing and appliance locations might be implemented. Most walls and fixture locations would remain the same.

“A light renovation is typically just a freshen-up of colors and materials without any changes to layout or rooms,” Shively explains. “It’s a budget-friendly option and typically faster to achieve.”

All renovated spaces receive new finishes and materials, and new plumbing and lighting fixtures are also selected. Also new in at least some spaces are doors, cabinets, hardware and countertops. More new furnishings are likely to be selected. Outside, windows may be upgraded to double or even triple pane as well as some doors.

look of the home changes, the costs are moderate, and the timeline is a bit longer but usually less than a complete renovation.”

That final option entails extensive changes to walls, enlarging rooms with additions or combining of two spaces, raising the ceilings or the roof. “This is nearly like creating a new house,” Shively says. “Costs may be lower than building custom from the ground up, and timelines are also typically a little shorter than new.”

A full renovation can be extensive and down to the studs, gutting the interior and rearranging rooms within the given footprint or even adding to that. The entire style of the house can shift, from Mediterranean to Contemporary or vice versa.

Exterior elevations may change accordingly.

Energy efficiency can be focal at this stage. New windows and doors insulate against the elements, especially the summer desert sun. Multi-paned tubular skylights, or solar tubes, can transform rooms with great Arizona light. And, inside, ENERGY STAR™ appliances can reduce electricity costs and new plumbing fixtures water expenditures.

Any renovation should involve eco-friendly choices, including materials that are nontoxic, sustainable and energy efficient, Shively tells her clients, at whatever level they wish to work.

Growing up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, she was close to Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton national parks; she was inspired by them and incorporated environmental sensitivity into her life work.

Consider, too, how the removal and disposal of materials and fixtures are handled, she recommends. Companies will take donations of cabinets, plumbing fixtures, appliances and lighting and HVAC components if they are in good condition.

Ask how the builder will dispose of wood and nonreusable materials. Can the company recycle rather than landfill? What are the costs and how will this be scheduled? Consider reusing, repurposing and refinishing some pieces. For instance, old

laundry cabinets can be repurposed for use in the garage.

Different professionals should be retained, depending on the extent of the job. A face-lift might require just an interior designer and a builder. The moderate renovation will absolutely require a builder and designer, and an architect may or may not need to be consulted depending on factors such as bearing walls and roof changes.

For the total redo, the full team of architect, interior designer and builder should be impaneled.

“The complexity of decisions that will be addressed is nearly the same as for a new construction house, and each profession will be able to make sure that nothing is missed,” Shively says.

Your budget will depend on the size of the spaces being remodeled and the materials chosen. Here, you, the seller or buyer, have complete control. “You will want to have an idea of what you are comfortable investing before starting your design process and share that with your design team. They can also help you determine what is realistic for your goals and the house,” she says. Also, a luxury Realtor® can advise on what level of investment is realistic for each home for selling quickly or for a longer period of time living in or leasing out.

For Shively, any renovation, luxury or less so, should result in what she calls “WELL Designed” homes that are healthy, eco-conscious and livable. She approaches each as unique and aligned with the owners’ lifestyles, tastes and needs: “The aesthetics are customized to individual styles while always bringing the philosophy of wellness and sustainability into consideration.”

POST PHOTO COVERAGE written by Peter Volny There was a very popular surprise celebrity at the December Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering when Santa arrived in a red Ferrari California, generously provided by Michael Metts. Pat Hickey of Peoria Ford provided a huge army truck in which members of Scuderia Southwest (SSW) and guests placed toys that will be given to the kids at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. There were so many that they barely fit into SSW member Matt O’Connor’s pickup truck. Day of registration payments resulted in a donation to Phoenix Children’s Hospital of $991.

Another typically beautiful clear Scottsdale day brought both cars and people out in droves to see a huge variety of classic and contemporary cars. In addition to the usual latest models there were several classics from Ferrari.

Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Shelby and others. Many of the cars on display are quite rare and this monthly show is one of the few places where they can be seen.

The Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering is held on the first Saturday of every month all year long, from 7AM – 10AM at the corner of Scottsdale Rd. & Mayo Blvd. Car entry is restricted to Scuderia Southwest members but non-members with qualifying vehicles can pay a small fee. Spectators are free.
