Maserati reveals the first Levante built around a V8 engine at the New York International Auto Show. It is the Levante Trofeo, the ultimate Maserati of SUVs, capable of accelerating in style from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of over 186 mph.

The Levante Trofeo is equipped with one of the most powerful engines ever fitted in a Maserati. A 3.8-liter Twin Turbo V8 engine that has been engineered to perfectly mate with the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System and delivers an astounding 590 hp at 6,250 rpm and 538 lb-ft of torque at 2,250 – 5,000 rpm.

The unmistakable Levante design has reached new levels of sportiness in this top of the line Trofeo. The elegant restyling was mainly focused on the lower front fascia and the rear bumper and is underlined by the 22-inch forged aluminium “Orione” wheels – the largest ever fitted on a Maserati – available in both polished and matte finishes.

The side air intakes in the lower fascia feature a new, more aggressive design, defined by two aerodynamic wings that give a sense of further stability, visually “pushing” the weight of the car’s nose towards the massive front wheels.

And to help improve the airflow distribution, Trofeo is outfitted with carbon fibre side bezel blades and a carbon fibre splitter.

The rear end also looks wider and more muscular with a sharper carbon fibre horizontal element and body-color lower extractor that embrace the oval quad exhaust tips.

In front, the Levante Trofeo has Full Matrix LED headlights, a front grille with double vertical bars in a piano black finish and lower honeycomb mesh fascia, as well as body color door handles, oval exhaust tips in a dark finish and performance painted brake calipers in red, blue, black, silver or yellow. And to cap it off, specific “Saetta” Trofeo logos adorn the iconic c-pillars of the coupé styled SUV. Specific details, like the lower splitter, the blade side bezels in the front air intakes, the side skirt inserts and the rear extractor are made of ultralight, high-gloss carbon fibre, giving the Levante Trofeo a polished racing look. Even the hood is new, featuring two aggressive vent for better cylinder head cooling. And under the hood, the engine cover is also made of high-gloss carbon fibre featuring a V8 inscription and the iconic Trident logo, while cylinder heads and intake manifolds are painted red.

Interior designers have come up with elegant ways to create a distinctive environment within the Levante Trofeo cabin. The sculpted sport seats feature a premium full-grain

Power under control Maserati engineers developed the mighty 3.8-liter Twin Turbo V8 engine to accommodate the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, providing it with a new crankcase design, specific crankshaft assembly, new oil pump and auxiliary belt and a different wiring layout.

New turbochargers feature increased flow, while redesigned cylinder heads with specific camshafts and valves, different pistons and new connecting rods allow the ability to reach the maximum power targets in combination with specific engine calibration mapping.

The Levante Trofeo is definitely one of the fastest SUVs ever built with a top speed of over 186 mph. Thanks to its remarkable weight/power ratio of 3.6 kg/hp the Trofeo needs only 3.9 seconds to reach 62 mph and only in 113 feet of braking distance to get back to a complete stop.

The ideal 50:50 weight balance and the low center of gravity - common to all Levante models - in combination with the finely tuned double-wishbone front / Multi Link rear suspension and the larger tyres fitted to the 22-inch forged aluminium wheels, endow the new Trofeo with remarkably balanced handling and lateral stability.

Ségolène Gros serves magical food prepared by her husband, Chef Jean-Christophe, at the couple’s Voilà French Bistro, 10135 E. Vía Linda in Mercado del Rancho at Scottsdale Ranch, 10 minutes from downtown.

Their café, in one of the city’s fine lake communities, is inviting, intimate, quiet, charming. You’ll hear French music and be welcomed by Ségolène’s “Bon Jour” at the door and, on the wall, a copy of Renoir’s joyous “Luncheon of the Boating Party.” Stay a while, relax, enjoy, inside or out on the patio.

Voilà serves lunch and dinner. Excepting the bread, everything is house made, including the pastries, sauces, pâtés and quiches.

Enjoy appetizers such as Moules au Beurre D’Escargots, mussels with parsley butter and garlic; Soupe À L’Oignon Gratinée, French onion soup; Country Duck Pate, in sliced style; and Pork Rillettes, chopped and served as a thick spread in an open tureen.

Another is a Marseille-influenced Seafood Bouillabaisse, with monkfish, Scottish salmon, deep-sea scallops, branzino, shrimps, mussels and red snapper. This is a French paella or New Orleans-style seafood gumbo. Chef adds a thick garlicrich rouille sauce, tomatoes, celeries, fennel, white wine, spices and potatoes, which he cooks then quickly bakes in a pan.

Desserts include three soufflés with chocolate and Grand Marnier and topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.

For those interested in wine-paired dinners, Voila’s final of the season is April 29, “La Grande Soirée.”

The three-course menu includes the La Noix de SaintJacques, with minced sea scallops and langostinis in a curry and cider sauce (served with a Kir Royal [champagne and Cassis Crème]); Le Tournedos Rossini, pan-seared filet mignon topped with pan-seared duck foie gras in a port wine sauce, served with Domaine de La Grâce d’Ornon (Bordeaux PessacLeognan – 2009); and La Profiterole, puff pastry filled with vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate sauce, with a Tossed Spiced

Ségolène and chef purchased the existing Voilà in October 2015. They had just moved to Scottsdale from France, where both were born, she in the north and he in the small northeast town of Neufchâteau, population approximately 7,300, at the confluence of the Meuse and Mouzon rivers in the Vosges Mountains area, a three-hour drive from Paris.

“I learned to cook watching my mother, so when I was about 15 she arranged a job for me at a local restaurant,” he says, as Ségolène translates. Life-setting, the job was at the Michelin-starred Relais Châteaux Les Bas Rupts in the ski-resort town of Gérardmer.

His mentor there 30-plus years ago was Chef Michel Philippe. “He welcomed me in the kitchens and taught me everything,” he recalls.

He learned well: Chef Gros eventually owned three hotel restaurants in the area and became well known throughout eastern France for his cuisine. The couple met in 1998 in one of these hotels in Neufchâteau.

“He was in the kitchen and worked with the wines, and I was on the floor serving or hosting in the lobby,” Ségolène said. “We worked together for two years –– nothing –– and then we fell in love.”

Seven years ago, they visited Las Vegas and wedded. “It was so romantic for us,” she recalled.

For sure, you’ll take to their food, with passion.

“Ours are traditional French dishes with a modern elegance but still very flavorful and normal-size portions,” chef says. “This is not la nouvelle cuisine but ‘la cuisine traditionelle moderne’ with modern dishes.”

but I also offer dishes from all French regions in my dinner specials,” he says. Thus, you’ll find Escargots de Bourgogne, snails in a Burgundy-wine broth; Moules Provencales, mussels, garlic, celery, white wine and tomatoes; Filet de Boeuf Sauce Béarnaise, filet mignon in béarnaise; and Traditional Poulet Basquaise, chicken and white wine in the Basque style.

HOLLANDER - A DUTCH JEWELRY DESIGN LEGEND written by E.J. Webber Cornelis Hollander, who is survived by his strong family, could certainly have a book or two written about his extraordinary life. Adventurous, successful at anything he tried, lover of globetrotting, fast cars, and motorcycles, as well as designing the most wondrous pieces of jewelry, Cornelis will be remembered for a long time. But honoring a legend is not easy in just a few words.

His son, Walter, who is a designer in his own right and carries on the business now with his mother, gave us little historical insight: “My dad began designing in the garage at home. He worked for a jeweler in 1982 that entered one of his ring designs for their company. My father also entered his own design – winning first place and the Grand Prize.

He always won or placed in any jewelry design contest he ever entered!”

Cornelis Hollander turned his ideas into reality in not only creating one of a kind pieces for celebrities such as Michael Jordan’s wife, but for many others who appreciated the skill and craftsmanship of the designer. 1984 was the turning point for him, founding his own company. Soon, he and his wife Christa, who worked with him to grow the jewelry company, began selling their sculptured designs with distinctive colored gems to well known big stores such as Neiman-Marcus and Nordstrom. Split shank rings that sparkled with colored gemstones, diamonds, and geometric gem shapes became the stock in-trade of his finely sculptured designs.

working under his father’s tutelage for ten years as a designer.

“We both had a similar feel for design and since he was so easy going and had a loving personality, it was a joy to learn from him. The focus for us today, will always be custom designs to include the rich heritage begun by my father.”

One of the company’s new directions is to recreate some of the discovered designs from early company catalogues of his father’s; designs that Cornelis was noted for and retouching these classic styles to give them a contemporary look and feel.

The other avenue Walter is eagerly exploring is to take heirloom pieces and older jewelry to make them fresh again.

With the rise in prices of estate jewelry by sophisticated auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Bonhams, older classic jewelry that is a reminder of a dear family member, or a valuable coveted work can be turned into stylish contemporary pieces, explained Walter. “These re-imagined rings, necklaces, earrings, and pins will last well into the future for generations to cherish.”

The man born in Amsterdam, who loved Arizona and who began it all so successfully, will always be thought of as a quintessential artist and designer, as well as a most fun loving and positive person. Alpio Barbara hosts Cars and Coffee every month at work –– and enjoys his prized cars every day at home, with or without a cup of joe.

Cars and Coffee happens the second Saturday of each month, 7–10 a.m., at his Alpios at Troon –– “Let’s Go Back in Time” –– in the Villages of Pinnacle Peak, 10452 East Jomax Road, at Alma School Road in north Scottsdale. The native Californian opened the event center in April 2016, and Valley car- and cycle-lovers have been revved since.

With an events-friendly double mezzanine level, Alpios Place also hosts birthday celebrations, baby showers, weddings, Halloween, Christmas and bachelorette parties and business team-builders and conferences.

“I was approached by people from clubs and organizations who heard about the place and wanted to rent it for themed events,” he says. “We did a Halloween Party for the Ferrari Club of Arizona and also a live screening of the US Volume XV, Number 04

Formula 1 Race,” he adds, noting he’ll cater or you can arrange that.

Barbara’s center is furnished as a ’50s-style diner, with alternating classic cars and motorcycles, and includes arcade games, pinball, pool table, internet hookups as well as a 80-inch TV screen for presentations, vintage gas pumps and life-size mannequins of the Rat Pack, Marilyn Monroe and motorcycle officers. Swooping from the ceiling are large-scale models of military aircraft acquired from private collections and period neon signs on the walls.

At home, he has a collection that’s worth some neon, too.

“What makes my collection special is that I have different cars from muscle to the sports cars; it’s very eclectic,” Barbara says.

Among his 18 cars, he has four Corvettes, a ’54, ’61, ’66 and a 2014, a 1966 Mustang convertible and a fastback from that vintage, too. Also: a 1970 Dodge Challenger 426 Hemi (clone); 1969 Chevy El Camino and 1970 Chevelle; 1966

Plymouth Barracuda; 1965 Factory 5 Shelby; 1996 Dodge Viper; 1933 Ford Roadster Street Rod; 2007 F430 Ferrari; and, the latest acquisition, a Ferrari 458.

“Auto passion has been in my blood since I was a teenager,” says Barbara, the owner/operator of Redwood General Tire in Redwood City, south of San Francisco. In 2016, he was named Modern Tire Dealer of the Year by Modern Tire Dealer Magazine, the premier industry publication.

“When I was 19, I installed wheels and tires on Steve McQueen’s Mustang for the movie “Bullitt,” he recalls. “I did not know it was for McQueen until four months later when the owner of the high-performance shop that did the dyno on the motor told us. They just found the original in a scrap yard in Mexico.”

He began his collection years ago and kept his cars when he moved to north Scottsdale and opened Alpios at Troon.

“Before in California, I could not afford or want to buy a building to house my cars, as the real estate was too expensive,” he explains.

Here are some of Barbara’s cherished cars: •1933 Ford Roadster –– The car was built by Roy Brizio in San Francisco in 1995 with a Corvette drive train and painted

by Art Himsel in Concord, California. The body is fiberglass, with a Wescot body.

Barbara purchased the car from the late Bob Walker. “I mentioned to Andy, Roy’s father, that I was looking to get back into hot rodding since I had sold my 1932 sedan and roadster, and he mentioned that a guy in Scottsdale was looking to sell a 1933 roadster,” he recalls.

“Well, anyone who knows Andy knows that 1932 is the only year for him, and when I called Bob and asked if I can see it, he lived around the corner from me in Scottsdale.

How weird is that?”

•1954 Chevy Corvette –– Completely restored in California, “It is as close to perfect as I can get it,” he says.

He bought this, the second year for America’s sports car, from a gentleman in Danville, California, who restored the car to near perfection. “It is the grandma of all my cars,” he says. “The original Blue Flame six-cylinder is like Driving Miss Daisy.”

•1961 Chevy Corvette –– This and the following two cars, the 1966 Mustang convertible and the ’66 fastback, were bought from a family in Southern California. “A Chevelle specialist in Phoenix, Bill Olson, who does all my work, completed all of them,” he says.

A fuel-injection car, the frame- off restoration has a fourspeed transmission and a 50/50 paint scheme. “It was about 80-percent complete when I bought it,” he says.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Pace Car

•1966 Ford Mustang –– This is a convertible with the 289 cid and a white pony interior, automatic and front disc brakes.

“It was complete when I purchased it and needed just a few minor changes,” he says.

•1966 Ford Mustang –– A fastback, it has four-wheel disc brakes with a high-performance 289 and an after-market five-speed Tremac transmission. The rear end is from a Lincoln Versace. “It was brought home on a flatbed and needed to be completed from front to back,” he says.

•1967 Barracuda –– “I purchased the ’Cuda from a gentleman in Scottsdale who wanted to sell it so he could build a horse arena. He went from a fish to a horse!”

•1966 Chevy Corvette –– This 15-year old frame-off restoration was done in California and has a 327-cid 350horse powerplant with a four-speed transmission.

•1969 Chevy El Camino –– Recently completed, it carries a 396-cid with an automatic bench seat.

“The El Camino was bought from a dear friend of mine, and the car belonged to his late brother,” Barbara says. “When I saw the car I said ‘I want it.’ It was the year I graduated and the exact high school colors. I had to have it.

“It went over to Bill Olson, who did his magic and tried Volume XV, Number 04

to make it as original as you can. It even has a small built-in tach in the center which I have never seen before: very rare I was told.”

•1970 Chevy Chevelle –– This also has a 396 cid with an automatic transmission and is in the popular blue-on-black color combo. “I bought it in Oregon with a show-stopper paint job. The engine and interior needed some work but was not a lost cause. Very healthy and all matching numbers.”

•1970 Dodge Challenger –– “A perfect clone, a 426 Hemi convertible with not a single detail left unturned,” Barbara says. “It even has an 8-track, and unless you are 50 or older, you don't know what that is.”

•1959 Chevy El Camino –– “It’s under construction and will be ready in a year of so.”

“Folks ask me, ‘Which is my favorite car?’ he says. “‘I respond by saying, ‘They are like children. They are all my favorites.’”

Barrio Queen Celebrates Success of Desert Ridge Restaurant, Plans Tempe & Queen Creek Locations written by David M. Brown “Barrio” means “neighborhood,” and Barrio Queen means that –– in regal style.

When Scottsdale restaurateurs Linda Nash and Steve Rosenfield opened the first Barrio Queen in 2011 in Old Town Scottsdale, they wanted to bring authentic southern Mexican cuisine and culture to the Valley. That year, Esquire called it one of its best New Restaurants in America.

The couple and their staff then opened locations in vibrant downtown Gilbert, and, in the summer of 2017, at the Desert Ridge Marketplace, 21001 N. Tatum Boulevard, in north Phoenix. Two new Barrio Queens, in Tempe Marketplace and Queen Creek, are planned for approximately January 2019.

All three locations offer lunch, happy hour, dinner and catering options as well as custom cocktails, including margaritas, and tequila and mescal menus. Each varies the food and spirits menus slightly, allowing patrons to enjoy different experiences at the same restaurant.

Signature dishes available at all three are the Chiles En Nogada, the Azteca Burrito and the Enchiladas Suizas. Popular margaritas are Deaths Door, Paloma and El Ray. “We have always enjoyed going to Mexico, but for years we couldn’t find good Mexican food here at home. You’d find an American version instead,” says Linda, whose husband Volume XV, Number 04

has been in the food industry for his career. They met through business 15 years ago.

Throughout Mexico they search out food and design inspiration, meeting with chefs and families. “Everyone we meet is so kind and proud to share their recipes with us to take home and use at our restaurants,” she explains.

“We have always loved the Hispanic culture, which places so much focus on family and food,” she adds, noting that her Native America/Irish upbringing also emphasized the social importance of food.

“We would visit a place, and an employee would come out with a torta, a carnitas sandwich, and say, ‘This is what my family makes,’ and then they’d invite us to their house to share other recipes with us.” she recalls. “So, we took down recipes and asked all of the cooks how they were able to keep the food so authentic.”

In Scottsdale, they worked with Chef Sylvana Esparza, who helped them debut the first location to great success.

Creative Chef Julio Matta now coordinates recipes for the three locations.

“We know that we’ve hit the mark when we see Hispanic families dining with us. One person recently said to us, ‘We haven’t had food this good since my grandmother’s,’” she

says. “And, our employees themselves get off work and bring their families back that night.”

The Barrio Queen at Desert Ridge comprises 5,700 square-feet of indoor and outdoor space. The interior includes an open kitchen, a private tequila tasting room for 300-plus varieties and artwork from local and Mexican artists.

For the Tempe newbuild, and probably for Queen Creek as well, the couple has retained well-known Scottsdale architect, Mark Candelaria, AIA, to design a unique space for the young vibrant group that frequents the center: “We plan to augment the patio area and make the location look like a party,” he says, noting that his wife, Isabel DellingerCandelaria, will design the interior.

The menu includes favorites as well as dishes created for Desert Ridge. There is a “trompo” (a rotating vertical spit) for “al pastor” dishes, and diners can watch chefs creating tortillas from scratch. Everything at the restaurant is handmade: salsa to chips to the tableside-prepared guacamole, which Travel and Leisure and USA Today have both highly noted.

“At Barrio Queen, we don’t just put the food on the table,” Linda says. “My husband and want you to be treated as we want to be treated. We want you to forget stress for a few hours. We want you to have a drink with us. We want to break bread with you. And we want you to have fun.”

Powertrain and performance The 2.9-liter TFSI V6 biturbo engine delivers power, efficiency and distinct RS sound. The new biturbo engine generates 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque available in a wide rev range from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm. The Audi RS 5 Sportback sprints from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds and achieves a top track speed of 155 mph, or increased to 174 mph with

The two turbochargers on the 2.9-liter engine of RS 5 are positioned directly inside the “V” promoting engine responsiveness and performance. For high engine efficiency, power and torque, the V6 engine uses a centrally mounted fuel injector and a combustion method with shorter compression and longer expansion phases. This B-cycle combustion process with central direct injectors further support efficiency of the powertrain.

Drivetrain The power of the 2.9 TFSI reaches the quattro permanent four-wheel drive with self-locking center differential via a sporty eight-speed Tiptronic® with optimized shifting times. It distributes the drive forces asymmetrically 40:60 on the axles - this guarantees both responsive handling and optimal performance.

A traction control system manages distribution for maximum acceleration with minimal slip and the standard quattro sport rear differential to maximize driving dynamics.
