David Flinn’s 2002 Honda S2000 AP1, the 2023 Best of Show winner
David Flinn will “for sure” be there, and he’s bringing back his 2002 Honda S2000 AP1, the 2023 Best of Show winner at the first Future Collector Car Show (FCCS) held during the Barrett-Jackson flagship Scottsdale auction. “It was the first Barrett Jackson event I have attended, and I didn’t know what to expect,” the Valley resident says. “There was a steady crowd of people all day long, and my car ended up getting quite a bit more attention than I expected. I spent the majority of the day talking with people about my car and met several S2000 owners who had recently purchased their cars.” The second FCCS at Barrett-Jackson will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the Polo Field in WestWorld of Scottsdale, as part of the nine-day Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, January 20–28. Designed to drive the next generation of car lovers, the one-day FCCS is a family-friendly, concours-style event featuring vehicles that best represent the future of the collector car hobby, celebrating the cars we love today and future collectibles. Spectators will enjoy vehicles from highly modified custom builds to original and perfectly preserved rides, offering an experience in which multiple generations will share their love for car collectibles. “It attracted a large, younger and diverse audience of automotive enthusiasts. I can’t wait to see the entries at FCCS for the second installment at Barrett-Jackson this January, and I look forward to celebrating this great hobby with everyone in attendance,” he adds, noting that the event targets a younger generation and the cars they grew up with. “It’s like we saw with the generation before them who grew up loving muscle cars; this younger demographic of enthusiasts grew up appreciating cars from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. “These are the type of cars they like the most,” he says. “The passion for the hobby is the same, but they have an appreciation for cars they grew up with. They also consume a lot of content on social media, and that’s why we have a lot of social media influencers at the Future Collector Car Show as well.”
A Winning Event, Award-winners & Awards The last show was a great event, Flinn says. He heard about the FCCS from a friend and then found out that the car photographer Larry Chen was going to be a judge. “I thought it might be an opportunity to get my car in front of him and maybe get the chance to have him photograph it,” he says. Flinn, 41, sold his first S2000 AP1 and regretted it. The award-winning car he has now is the same color as the original. “This car is the car that I wanted to build when I bought my first S2000 but didn’t have the money or knowledge to do so,” he explains.

He’s been planning this car since selling the first one in 2004 and has been hunting for and collecting parts since. He even has a few small items from that original car. “I set out to build the best street car that I possibly could and wanted it to pass as something that could have come out of the factory the way it is. The car is fairly heavily modified, but if you’re not familiar with the chassis, it’s not obvious.” Flinn wasn’t expecting the attention the car received at the first FCCS. “I thought it would slip under most people’s radar,” he says. “It was exciting winning the Best of Show award and felt like validation for all the time and effort that went into the car.” Joseph Garcia, 27, won the Visionary Award with his 1989 Nissan 240SX at the first FCCS and hopes to return for the second event in January. His S13 is powered by a 1JZ VVTI with a Garrett turbo and other performance mods. “It’s got all the good noises, has a big lowrider inspiration from the custom kandied roof to the chromed engraved valve covers and sits low on Garson Ryugi wheels,” explains Garcia, who is an automotive painter and body technician in Arizona. “My life is wrapped around the lowrider and drifting scene. “The show was absolutely amazing. I can’t believe I won an award still.” he adds. “I got to speak to a lot of people about my build. So many people were shocked that the car wasn’t a show car. I live by the rule that having a track car shouldn’t ever be an excuse to have an ugly car.”

Highline Autos Ringbrothers, the world-renowned custom car builder and parts manufacturer, has unveiled its latest creation at the 2023 SEMA Show - "PARAMOUNT," a 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. Engineered from the ground up, PARAMOUNT embodies the quality and coachwork Ringbrothers is known for, shattering expectations of aesthetics and driving performance from one of the most storied luxury brands in the world. Every part of PARAMOUNT was created to showcase its impeccable design and performance capabilities. The original bodywork was retained and stripped to bare metal, with the smallest imperfections hand-corrected before the application of BASF Glasurit's "White as Fluff" finish. With the exception of custom-machined badging and other subtle touches, the mostly stock exterior largely hides the complete transformation of the luxury icon. "Unlike many of our builds, we chose to retain the original bodywork and lines of the Rolls, so at first glance, there are only hints to what lies beneath," said Ringbrothers co-owner Jim Ring. "That all changes when the door opens to show the completely custom interior or a press of the go pedal emits a telltale supercharger whine. This truly is the ultimate luxury sleeper." The signature Rolls-Royce Pantheon grille does little to hide the supercharged snarl beneath the bonnet. The 6.2-liter LT4 engine delivers 640 horsepower and 635 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels by way of a Bowler Tru-Street 10-speed automatic

Highline Autos transmission and custom QA1 carbon-fiber driveshaft. The drivetrain sits on a custom Roadster Shop chassis with Ringbrothers-fabricated two-piece clamshell control arms and custom 10-gauge steel boxed frame rails. A Roadster Shop Ride Line front suspension and Fast Link parallel four-bar rear suspension with Fox RS SV coilovers at all four corners provide ride comfort and handling. Custom EVOD Industries 18x7-inch front and 18x8-inch rear wheels are wrapped in Falken Azenis tires. An homage to the original Rolls-Royce wheels, the EVOD Industries wheels include gyro wheel center caps to ensure the logo, of course, remains upright. The luxurious custom interior embodies uncompromising attention to detail. The dashboard is intricately laced with machined billet switch gear, while the instrumentation offers old-world charm with new-world metrics and infotainment. Custom-built floor pans enhance interior volume and comfort for both driver and passenger, while the interior divider has been removed. A starlight headliner curates an otherworldly interior space. Over 1,000 LED lights were hand-sewn into the headliner to create a constellation that softly lights the cabin in a cool hue, allowing passengers to enjoy the signature Rolls-Royce "picnic tables" with their preferred refreshment or condiment. "Every part of this build is brimming with detail and character," said Ringbrothers co-owner Mike Ring. "The exterior keeps to the allure of traditional British luxury while the engine, chassis and interior all embrace a modern luxury sedan. This project combines Rolls-Royce's past and present with a 640-horsepower American accent. We invested over 3,400 hours in fabricating, painting and engineering this project and are grateful to our partners for working with us to further our craft and allowing us to explore an entirely new realm of art form."

Scottsdale resident Troy D. recently purchased a luxury Volare Hangar at Pegasus Airpark in Queen Creek, about 40 minutes from Phoenix in the East Valley. He’s flying extra high, waiting for the space to be completed while he awaits the arrival of his new Diamond DA62 in 2025. Equity 1000 LLC, owned and operated by John, Tarja and Johnnie Panfil, has partnered with Boomerang Capital Partners LLC in Mesa to build the premium Volare Hangars. Here owners store their planes, helicopters, collectible cars and other treasures while spending time with friends, family and business acquaintances. “Equity 1000 is a local family-owned equity firm that utilizes our various backgrounds in business, construction, energy management, consulting, contracts, accounting, investments and real estate development,” says John, a longtime Valley resident and real estate investor/developer. “We identify, strategize and implement opportunities as a macro-developer with a focus on commercial and aviation-based real estate.” Volare comprises 34 premium and upgraded executive hangars, 60-by-60 square feet to 80-by-80 square feet, built in two phases; Pegasus is a gated aviation- and equestrian-focused community surrounding the private airport’s paved runway, 5,124 feet by 80 feet. Both phases of Volare Hangars are under construction and only a few months away from occupancy. The development completes the last rows of hangars as originally planned in 1998 and finishes the south entrance into the airpark. In addition, Volare will also improve the view from Empire Road. “Most importantly, it will provide storage for more aircraft that will now call Queen Creek home,” says John.

These two south buildings facing Empire road have canopies and subtle architectural design cues to represent the wings of the legendary Boeing B-52 bomber “Stratofortress” that has been in service by the U.S. Air Force for more than 60 years. “The final design of these streetside executive hangars was driven by the creative input received from both the community and town to ensure an aesthetically impressive entrance into the airpark,” he explains.

Larger executive hangars along Diana Way use commercialgrade CMU block construction for the exterior and demising walls, enhancing the look and sound attenuation. These units have dedicated street addresses with private driveways that have 14-foot-by-14-foot hydraulic RV doors; large patios that include 10-foot-tall commercial-grade sliding doors which can be folded completely to one side; and a separate 8-foot-tall glass front entrance door. The hangars also have greater flexibility in potential uses, including building out a portion of the interior into a residence. During his weekly search earlier this year of hangar opportu-

nities in the Phoenix area, Troy met John at Pegasus Airpark in June 2023. They toured, discussing the project, and visited other Queen Creek locations. Later, he met Johnnie. “By the end of the day, I felt confident in a decision to move forward with a purchase of a Volare Hangar for my aircraft and cars,” he says. He is also searching for a Cirrus SR22. In addition to the qualities mentioned, he likes Volare’s PEMB steel construction; the fully insulated and paneled walls/roof; utilities hook-up; and a fortified roof structure to support the HVAC. Security is central. Pegasus Airpark is a gated community, and both Jet-A and AVGAS fuel are on site with discounted pricing for owners. In addition, Pegasus is 7,000 feet below KPHX Class B airspace, with fewer flight restrictions than other local airports.

Highline Autos Equity 1000 and Boomerang also partnered with Trust Bank which is extending 50-percent LTV financing to qualified Phase 2 buyers, as it did for the initial phase. “Many pilots have experienced the lack of lenders willing to finance hangars, and the LTV provides our buyers with a rare opportunity to use it for the purchase of these hangars,” John says. A passion for flying and for family spurred the project. “‘Volare’ means ‘to fly’ in Italian,” John says. “My mother came from Italy when she was 14 years old, so we’re keeping those beautiful memories alive using the name. She had Dean Martin as her phone’s ringtone, and when someone would call, the famous song, “Volare,” would play.” John and Johnnie were searching for a hangar in Pegasus before coming across the opportunity to develop the vacant land and provide high-end hangars to the rapidly growing general aviation market, which is experiencing a significant shortage of places to store aircraft, according to industry data and FAA’s congressional hearings, explains Johnnie. Most airports are owned by municipalities, which have strict
requirements they must meet for FAA funding. “Public airports receiving funding from the FAA are required to have ground leases on hangars located within the airport, and, once the initial term and any renewals are over, the airport authorities can take ownership of the hangar, so at most airports hangars are only available with limited ownership rights due to ground leases that come with strict rules and restrictions, unlike private airports,” explains John. However, private airports, such as Pegasus, provide greater ownership rights without any ground leases; they are managed and maintained by a community association as they do not receive funding from FAA. Therefore, with fewer restrictions on how the hangars can be used, you can also store cars, RVs, boats and other equipment without any issues. “You own the hangar fee simple, forever allowing it to be passed down for generations and to appreciate in value without the diminishing returns caused by ground leases,” he says. “You can also modify and make improvements to the interior of the hangar without concerns of an authority taking ownership of your hangar or kicking you out.”

Craig Lieberman deserves a lot of credit for the “Fast & Furious” movies. Look for him lower on the end credits, though, than the late Paul Walker, the vibrant young star of the popular car flicks, which represented a hard shift in American car culture more than 20 years ago. Technical advisor on the first two (of ten) “Fast & Furious” movies by Universal Pictures, Lieberman starred big time, with a significant role in curating and compiling the tuner cars featured in those films. These “tuner” cars have components and modifications to make them faster. Beginning with the first film in 2001, the series centered on street racing and its culture of bolt-on parts and death defiance: nitrous injection, turbos and dual turbos, superchargers and high-output manifolds. They pioneered enthusiast films celebrating fast-to-the-point-of-furious imports which had been souped up and tricked out not by the manufacturers but by young performance-driven enthusiasts.

The franchise also includes short films, a television series, toys, video games, live shows and theme park attractions. Universal produced and distributed all of the films. These weren’t American muscle cars that defined the ’50s and ’60s: hot Corvettes with chrome sidepipes, Ford Cobras with racing-level small and big blocks, Ram Air Pontiac GTOs and Hemi Cudas. Instead, the car stars were Toyotas, Hondas, Mitsubishis, BMWs and Mazdas; these replaced the bigger, weightier gas-hungry street burners following the fuel crisis and engine detuning of the 1970s. “At first nobody believed that these were for real. After all, Japanese sports cars were just economy cars introduced to America following World War II,” Lieberman recalls. “Back in the day, parents wanted their kids to drive economical cars with good mileage — but the kids were out at night at the street races.”

He adds: “All of a sudden, in the 1990s, we started seeing these crazy car shows, like “Hot Import Nights,” and dedicated import strip drag races.” In his mid-50s today, Lieberman was too old to hop in and joy ride with those new devotees. At the time, the California native was working with automotive marketing companies.
Around the turn of the century, he was showing his yellow 1994 twin-turbo Toyota Supra at a car show in Manhattan, California; a middle-aged man wearing a Hawaiian short and sandals admired it. He was David Martyr, a producer; his wife Kool also worked at Universal Studios. The men exchanged contacts.
Some of his contemporaries back then, raised on the car pop hits of Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys, were asking him if this new ethos was a fad, transformative or transitory. Was this the swan song of the predatory muscle cars seeking their next street race victim?
Martyr called Lieberman, then with car-focused Peterson Publications, and visited his office, which featured a glossy of that super Supra proudly hanging on a wall. Martyr told him that he was a consultant on a movie called “Red Line” and asked him to “come down and see the folks at Universal.”
“You would go to the tuner events and find thousands of people buying these cars for $12,000 and putting another $30,000 in parts for them,” he recalls. “It was insane. People were buying these things they didn’t even need, that they couldn’t afford to impress people they didn’t know. It was crazy.”
Lieberman was asked to the director’s office at the studio. And he kept asking himself, “Why am I here? Why am I here?” But the staff liked him and what he could offer. He would help pick the cars, tweak the script and educate them about the tuner car culture, what’s good, what’s bad.
Backlot Car Casting
Pressed, he suggested the top tuner cars within a few minutes: the highly respected but expensive Nissan Skyline GTR (R33 or an R34 if one could be acquired); Acura NSX; Honda S2000; Mitsubishi 3000GT; Nissan 300zx; Mazda Rx7 (FD body style); and a Toyota Supra mk IV or mk III. “I wanted to make sure that if this movie was going to be made about tuner cars, that we had all of the best ones in it, the ones that people had been worshiping since the launch of the Gran Turismo game in 1997,” he says.
Although his dad was not a car guy, Lieberman has been a fan since youth, raised on Hot Rod magazine, the original Adam West Batmobile and “Speed Racer” cartoons and car shows featuring monster big block V-8s and skimpily covered women who quickly transformed Beaver Cleavers into men, car dreamers into car doers. “When I get my car, I said to myself it will have buttons and gadgets just like that,” Lieberman remembers.

Money was an immediate issue. In 2000, Universal’s new chief, Ron Lynch, told the production team that there would only be a $25-million budget. Reading the script, Lieberman estimated that the film would need at least 40 cars “to do it right.” So, at the starting line, the film was short millions.

Exacerbating this, the studio had responded to the first dailies, or footage produced each day, with “ho-hums” for a film high revving as “Red Line.” Yawning, they declined on more money.
For these, the studio used local mechanics and technicians to create cosmetic replicas of the hero car. “They painted them, slapped on some decals, a body kit, and everything else was just spray painted, glued on covered up or even Xeroxed such as gauges attached to the A pillars,” Lieberman says. “They went crazy putting all of the equipment in the cars.”
Martyr and crew, with Lieberman’s input, cut another reel; the producers liked it. “They were really fired up, and we got our money.” But the budget for the cars was just still only $2 million, including buying them, renting them, modifying them and fixing them. The final cost was $39 million; the film today would need $125-million today, he says. To “do it right,” Lieberman suggested, four or five copies of each car would be needed, but that would be impossible if they were all new. Lynch suggested that to save money the main or “Hero” cars be rented from private owners. “This would be the first time a motion picture didn’t build cars from scratch,” he says. The star car, “Hero 1,” is usually the shiniest, prettiest, most pristine car, the one you see Walker or costar Vin Diesel driving. “Hero 2” would be a cosmetic replica of Hero 1; it would lack components such as a working audio system but would have the turbos and other power upgrades for the racing and chase scenes. “We would use dark tinted windows to hide the fact corners were cut on the interior of these cars to save money,” he explains. When the car is moving, no one would notice that

In addition, two other versions would be required. “Stunt 1” would be a “beater” they’d buy off the internet. “Stunt 2” was in the same used condition as Stunt 1, a “backup for the backup.”
The crew scheduled a number of casting calls on the lot, with Lieberman the director. All of the cars were sourced in the Los Angeles area. If it could only be found in Japan, they’d simply not have the time or the money to import it.” All the cars had to be stock at a fair market price. The highest paid for a nonHero car was $24,000, and most were under $18,000; one was $9,900, another $11,000. All would sell today for $70,000 or more, he says. Secondly, they had to be easy to replicate with bolt-on parts and no custom fab work. “We were looking for cars that could be replicated without too much difficulty,” he explains. “Again, we didn’t have the time or the budget.” So cars with blended widebody kits, headlight or twilight swaps or any car with any crazy custom fabrication work or cars with elaborate interiors including multiple television sets were eliminated. And, if someone’s car wasn’t at one of the lot appraisals, the team would not select it if they couldn’t see it.

A chosen car also had to have strong aftermarket support, with a good selection of parts. “These are cars people would put a poster up on their walls of and dream about owning that car one day,” he says.

Finally, it needed to have an automatic transmission for the stunt drivers because stunt drivers don’t like driving manual cars. “This complicates the stunts; they don’t want to focus on shifting, when steering and sliding,” Lieberman explains.
Vin, who played Dom, got a ’93 Mazda RX7, which had to have the roll cage removed because of the actor’s size. He also received the beautiful ’69 Dodge Charger R/T built by Cinema Vehicle Services, with a replacement engine, which was returned after filming; the supercharger was fake, braced for the moment to the engine.
Led by Lieberman, the team also developed a “just-in-case” backup list, including an Acura Integra; BMW e36 M3; Honda Civic or Del Sol; Mazda Miata; Nissan 240sx (s13/14); Toyota Celica, MR2 (sw20 mk II) or AE86; and a Subaru Impreza. The Finish Line When Universal first approached Lieberman, the team didn’t know what cars would work for what roles in the film. At first, Paul (Brian in the film) would have a Mitsubishi 3000GT and then an Eclipse. But when Lieberman showed them his sixspeed manual ’94 Mk IV Supra, the team recessed to discuss. After a series of reviews and more lot casting calls, Craig then compiled a recommended list of cars for of the characters. Because Walker was the star, he would drive Lieberman’s

In Chicago, the Klairmont Kollections Automotive Museum (KKAM) displays 300 vehicles — from the Brass Era to Classic Muscle. Lately, the KKAM curatorial team has been focusing on adding vehicles with a Chicago connection. The 501(c)(3) 100,000-square-foot educationally based museum and event space promotes educational programming engaging young people through workshops, field trips and partnerships. All of the components taught in the STEAM models of education are supported by KKAM, says Robert Olson, its president. He adds that some of the collection was showcased this past summer at Chicago’s Navy Pier as part of the museum’s inaugural “Retro Rides” experience. Larry M. Klairmont, a WWII veteran and Chicago businessman, opened KKAM approximately 15 years ago as an eclectic

private collection and assembly of nostalgia, innovation and inspiration. The oldest car is a 1906 American Tourist, the newest a 2019 Mustang Roush. Originally in a repurposed Industrial Printing Factory, it’s today at 3117 N. Knox Street in the Belmont/Cragin area. Klairmont, who recently died at 94, collected vehicles late into life, after he was 70. Olson says that Klairmont's fiancé Joyce Oberlander urged him to share his unrefined collection and create a museum. “That switch was flipped and a plan of action hatched to convert his private collection to a public charity and museum.” “His collection started out as a private group of automobiles fueled by his love and passion for unique cars,” says Olson, noting that Klairmont especially loved Rolls-Royces and Cadillacs.

What’s old is new.” •The Golden Sahara II — Car enthusiast Jim Street improved on an original George Barris car. The vehicle had advanced technology in 1960 such as an automatic starter, pop-it doors, illuminated tires and other forward-thinking features such as radar. “Many refer to it as the first autonomous car! The vehicle

was also outfitted with an over-the-top gold roll bar as well as rear skirts. “The pearl color paint and gold accent trim took this concept vehicle to another level,” she says. •1970 Dodge Super Bee — In Plumb Krazy purple, this is a quintessential muscle car. The quality of this classic ride made it an award-winning gold recipient at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, scoring 517 out of 520 points. It has a 440 Six Pack V-8 with triple deuces (trio of 2-barrel carbs). “The purple color with black interior and dressed-out original engine is simply poetry in motion!” she says. •The Ice Princess — It started as a Studebaker, then incorporated parts and features from other designs. Mercado: “A car built for the stars!” •1966 Ford Econoline Mystery Machine — This colorful throwback, based on the cartoon series, is tricked out from exterior to interior. The family favorite carries a standard 240-cid inline 6-cylinder engine with a 3-speed manual transmission. “The Klairmont team can solve any mystery in this retro ride,” she says. •The Spaceliner — This one-of-one 1960 Ford Fairlane offers the spacelike sleek design so familiar to car enthusiasts throughout the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. It has the stock engine and transmission, bubble top, 10 functioning tail lights, metallic blue sparkle paint and extreme body work reminiscent of a design by Gene Winfield, who signed the dashboard.
