Comprising three separate north-south-facing homes in the Pima Acres community, 8845 East Sierra Pinta Drive offers privacy and security, the highest level of construction and materials and views of city lights and the McDowell Mountains. Jets, Cars and Canada: All three spike the rpms of Arcadia residents Glenn and Karen Williamson. Their fifth Wings & Wheels Scottsdale event, sponsored by the Canada Arizona Business Council, is March 2, 2024. If you are a jet owner, consider flying, driving, or even ice skating, to the Scottsdale Airpark if doing business with the state’s top foreign investor is powerful inspiration.

In 2016, Canadian native and CABC founder Glenn Williamson, invited a few of his Canadian friends with jets hangered at Scottsdale Airpark and homes in Arizona to gather at an FBO for wine and cheese.

Canadian snowbirds and business owners started their engines. “Jet owners and jet aficionados told their friends, and the OEMs and luxury purveyors began calling,” he says, noting that 200 jet owners with six aircraft and charter clients responded for the inaugural event. “It was an opportunity for them to meet and talk with each other,” he says.

“From that very first party, Wings & Wheels Scottsdale has grown into the largest private jet event in North America,” adds his wife, Karen, Wings & Wheels executive director. Next year’s event is March 2 at Atlantic Aviation’s newest luxury hangars adjacent to the runways.

The event welcomed 1,000 the following year; the group enjoyed about nine planes, including a magnificent Global 6000 compliments of sponsor Bombardier. In 2019, the Williamsons capped the event at 700 to maintain intimacy;

guests and sponsors brought 15 planes. And, in 2020, with the event again maxed at 700, Wings & Wheels hosted 21 aircraft. The sleek Embraer Praetor 600 was a crowd favorite, she recalls.

The guests at that most recent event were 69% American, 30% Canadian and 1% Mexican, according to CABC totals. They predominantly represented the industrial sectors of real estate development, petroleum, automotive and finance. The 2021, 2022, and 2023 events were not held because of the pandemic.

“Wings & Wheels Scottsdale is an exclusive yet highly social gathering of jets, their passionate owners and extraordinary cars,” explains Glenn, who founded the 100-member 501(c) 6 CABC in 2003 to strengthen the longstanding economic ties of Canada and Arizona. The Williamsons’ inspiration for the intimate get-together is the Naples Winter Wine Festival and Concorso d’ Eleganza Villa d’ Este.

“It’s a bespoke cocktail party held next to an active runway surrounded by private jets, exotic cars and luxury lifestyle brands. Like every memorable cocktail party, the food and spirits offered by our returning partner, Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC), are beyond premium.”

“This wonderful event has successfully brought together people who offer 1-percenter items, whether it’s art, liquor and wines, outfits, travel such as private islands, luxury and performance cars, jewelry, wine, the whole top-of-the line lifestyle,” says Frank Aazami, principal of the Private Client Group at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale, an event sponsor. “Planes are the common ground; this event puts wings on all of the products showcased there.”

Northern Bucks Fly South

Glenn’s family have been eight generations in Canada; most recently they have been involved with banking in Quebec. Because of career and his enjoyment of Arizona, he permanently moved here in 1987. He and Karen met in 1994, introduced by mutual friends at the old Baby Kay’s restaurant in Scottsdale.

Since the 1980s, he has facilitated investment in Arizona; Canadian brought money, they snowbirded, they moved here. First, the western provinces, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia, rich in oil resources, found Arizona a superb investment location as well as an affordable nearby

second or third home. Then, Canada as a whole discovered the state: new money from the old-money eastern and maritime provinces such as Ontario and Quebec as well as from newcomers Toronto and Vancouver.

Canadians built homes, residential developments, shopping centers. They loved the warm desert, the casual lifestyle, the people. But Williamson noticed that so many who came here on a seasonal basis or permanently would cocoon; they’d fly in their jets, most often to Scottsdale Airpark, then drive to their homes, often in north Scottsdale, to DC Ranch, Desert Mountain, Silverleaf, Ancala, Pinnacle Peak, Troon, Boulders and other luxury communities.

Most often, although sharing Canadian roots, the countrymen and -women didn’t know each other. They came and went, Arizona to Canada and back. In this way, they didn’t maximize their Arizona connections, and the state was also losing development opportunities. “They’d drive straight to their house, play golf and not interact with the economic development community,” he explains.

“Jets are the nexus of ultra-high net worth individuals, who make cross border business and are the decision-makers,” Karen explains, noting that the CABC limits membership to about 100. Guests are UUHNW, UHNW and VHNW individuals, averaging $200 million net worth. They are mostly couples, averaging in age from 45 to 65. About 45% own

jets, 25% are considered extreme charter members and 99% own luxury cars. And, approximately 75% are the founders, CEOs or presidents of the company represented, according to CABC records.

“While these are eye-popping demographics, what I truly love is that this is a jet-crazy crowd and they spend the evening enjoying an inside look at every aircraft,” says Glenn. “We have pilots, crew and sales professionals at each airstair waiting to show off the plane and answer operational questions.”

Karen adds: “Our event is an opportunity to meet those

decision-makers and entice them to lay down business roots in Arizona. We say that we have 1 degree of separation between Arizona decision-makers and Canadian decision-makers.” Many of these people were also luxury and performance car fans. So the triumvirate is a natural: Canada, jets, luxury vehicles. “We bring wealth together to help Arizona,” she adds.

Even knowledgeable businesspeople may be surprised about the economic impacts. For more than 30 years, Canada has been first in foreign direct investment into Arizona. Every year, two million Canadian tourists and Canadian Snowbirds visit Arizona, spending $2.5 billion, Glenn says, citing CABC

Every year, Canadians represent 87% of the international landings at Scottsdale Airport. Twenty years ago, there were 30 to 40 weekly commercial nonstop flights to and from Canadian cities and Arizona. Now, 210 nonstop flights are scheduled every week between the two countries, he says.

The five largest Canadian banks and many of the massive Canadian pension funds have Arizona presences. They put their money to work at higher returns here than in Canada, he says. Circle K is owned by a Canadian company, as are Nordstrom, Saks and Colliers, and 500 Canadian-owned or managed companies are in Arizona — far more than any other country. Glenn: “Canada loves Arizona.”

Taking Wing

“Arizona enjoys a mutually-beneficial relationship with Canada, and Wings and Wheels is a key event for continuing to build that relationship with Canadian business leaders,” says Sandra Watson, executive director of the Arizona Commerce Authority, the economic development department for Arizona. In 2022, Canada was one of Arizona’s top trading partners, ranking second for exports and third for imports at $2.6 billion each, she says, citing ACA records.

She has attended all of the events and plans to continue that

presence in March. She explains that recent expansions of Canadian firms have included Li-Cycle, XNRGY, Exro Technologies and APEL Extrusions. From 2016-2022, 23 foreign direct investment projects were facilitated by ACA from Canada into Arizona, representing significant capital investment and more than 1,000 projected new jobs.

“The Canadian Arizona Business Council’s efforts are vital to continuing to build relationships with Canadian business leaders and to showcase Arizona’s international attractiveness, while highlighting our global competitiveness as a destination for high-growth industries, including aerospace leaders such as Raytheon, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Gulfstream, Bombardier and more,” she says.

Another event sponsor, APEX Motor Club, “Where Performance Meets the Road,” coordinates the “wheels” component of the event, with its members arriving in vintage INDY cars, Porsches, McLarens, Aston Martins, Ferraris and other marques. APEX, a premier motorsports country club, is in Maricopa, about 40 minutes from Scottsdale Airport.

Its president and co-founder, Jason Plotke, has been attending the event from the first. “The combination of aircraft and automobiles is unique to Scottsdale, and the growth of the show over the years makes it even more intriguing. Apex Motor Club and Wings & Wheels not only share a passion in transportation vehicles but also a similar customer base. Typically, automotive aficionados have an affinity for aircraft and vice versa. That synergy is enjoyed both ways!”

Karen notes that Sanderson Lincoln Black Label, the top Lincoln Black Label dealership in the U.S., also recognizes this affinity; their Black Label luxury models will be on display next to every jet.

hearts and our efforts are with the men, women and families of Luke Air Force Base. For many, many years, we have supported LAFB through the Fighter Country Partnership,” she says.

All proceeds after expenses and all raffle proceeds will be donated toward renovating the original circa 1979 kitchen in the Child Development Center on base. Each day the children of the service members, 6 months to 5 years, attend educational day care staffed by early-childhood education professionals. The CDC serves 900-plus healthy meals per day to the children from a dated kitchen, so the Williamsons ask the guests of Wings & Wheels to bring generous hearts and credit cards to the event for the charity raffle.

This year the invite-only event expects 700 guests and 20plus aircraft and more than 40 exotic cars in 100,000 square feet of aviation space. Tickets are not available for purchase, and invitations are reserved for CABC members and jet owners. The Mercedes-AMG EQE, AMG Goes E-Lectric

With the recent news of AMG’s downsizing from their iconic V8 signature, the future success of the brand will fall on the experience the new EV vehicles can provide. Evolution of the German auto tuner from bespoke coachwork levels of personalization to customers of Mercedes-Benz road cars, to in house performance division of Mercedes-Benz products, comes the next chapter in the company’s long history, battery technologies and electric performance development. Our week with the 2023 MercedesAMG EQE AMG gave us plenty of time to experience the genesis of the EV AMG line. We went into our week with the EQE AMG with the goal of determining whether or not AMG can bring that same level of excitement they had perfected with their iconic V8 cars, to this combustion-less EV.

For most automakers, styling an EV has been a challenge, customers are receptive to designs they know and are familiar with, but EV vehicles pose a new list of functionally away from the traditional model. Mercedes-Benz with their “large and in charge” philosophy of car design on their flagship models complements the aerodynamic shapes most efficient for EV range. The EQE AMG has the same size and proportions of the Mercedes-Benz EQS model at a slightly smaller scale. The aggressive front grille, trick exterior lighting, mango paint, and large multi-spoke alloy wheels, put the Mercedes-Benz AMG touch on the somewhat standard EV shape.

While the outside dimensions of the EQE AMG are closer to a ‘mid-size’ sedan, the interior cabin feels more like the larger, ‘full-size’ models from Mercedes-Benz. The clever packaging of the EV drive-train is the reason for more of the vehicle's footprint being optimized for interior space, shrinking the exterior panels and shaping them to the most aerodynamic curves possible. The aggressive front bumper, and rear quarter panel cut outs carry over in similar style from models such as the C63 AMG S and AMG GT C/R. Even to the most casual of traffic, you feel confident the performance image AMG brings to any Mercedes-Benz is being recognized by those around you as something special.

The next generation of Mercedes-Benz vehicles this EQE AMG belongs to is defined by their interior. Bright LED ambient lighting has been taken a step further, lighting both the driver and passenger seats additionally to the already abundant surface trim lighting. Quality of the cabin materials are top notch, with build quality throughout reassuring customers they did not buy just an EV, but they bought a Mercedes-AMG EV. Burmester audio, 5 way driver and passenger messaging seat settings, and an infinite level of ambient lighting settings, and even more creature comforts will leave fans of an over the top driving experience satisfied.

Technologies like the dis-tronic cruise, lane assist, and blind spot warnings are smooth and invasive. You can tell these systems were designed to not get in the way of driving, but make the experience easier, unlike similar systems from other manufacturers. Mercedes' next generation of large touch screen takes a spin or two to get used to. Thankfully however, buttons such as home, AMG performance, volume, charging, and climate make it easy to “get back” to the main vehicle controls without shuffling through multiple menus.

As quickly as the conversation changed from making EV’s fun, to being the fastest accelerating vehicles on the market, the focus has shifted to all around performance. Sure the sub 3.5….3.0 second 0-60 mph times will scare your friends, but they’d be even more terrified on a mountain road carrying

over 5,000 pounds into a sharp right hander. This lack of handling and overall performance is where the EQE AMG shines above its competition. Our press car had the $5,400 optional AMG Carbon Ceramic front brakes, which was able to bring the car to a halt sharply without any of the “we’re not going to make it” surge common in over powered, underbraked vehicles. While brake pedal feel is practically nonexistent, the vehicle's carbon discs, regenerative braking, and aggressive regenerative engine braking in the sport settings, drivers will find themselves in the preferred over braking rather than under braking.

Mercedes-AMG threw every trick in the book to get the EQE AMG to give the driver the handling characteristics of their lighter, ICE performance vehicles. With 265/295 Pirelli P Zero front/rear tires, and rear-wheel steering as standard on all EQE models, the EQE AMG is able to hide its mass well through corners with nothing but grip, grip, and rip. Pair the performance engineering by Mercedes-AMG with the EV recipe of an extremely low center of gravity, and you get a 5,547 lb. performance sedan to rival its older brother, the 4,200 lb E63 AMG S in the bends.

AMG proves once again they know a thing or two about making a fast Mercedes. The EQE AMG allows customers to have their mind bending 0-60 times AND a quality interior you’d only find on a Mercedes-Benz flagship model. Sure the

EQE is no lightweight sports car, but with the wide, grippy Pirelli P Zero tires and rear-wheel steel, this heavy EV turns into a nimble sports sedan. What Mercedes-AMG have continued to do well is still delivering the option to have a nice and comfortable everyday driver. Some manufacturer’s are determined for even their sedans and SUVs to be “family sized sports cars”, without an alternative. However, the EQE AMG is still a $100K + Mercedes-Benz, with a quiet interior, smooth air suspension, and quality Burmester stereo… that just so happens to do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds without making a sound.

If the EQE AMG is going to be your first dive into electric performance cars, or electric cars in general, we would highly suggest it. We also suggest the installation of an at home car charger as well. The EQE AMG’s range of 225 miles and similar economy to 65 MPG means an at home charger is going to be your most convenient option for regular use. The 3rd party charging network is available as a backup should you find yourself needing some juice; but in our experience, is not quite there as the primary charging option for owners.

Seeing where Mercedes-AMG and their EV performance development goes from here will be exciting. I wouldn’t be surprised to see as the batteries get lighter and smaller, a proper revival of the SLS AMG Electric Drive next in the SLRSLS-AMG GT family tree, but only time will tell.

“My name is Adrian Suciu, and I am the owner of Steering Wheel Art in Scottsdale, Arizona. I was born in Timisoara, Romania; after finishing high school, I joined the army. In 2001, I decided with my wife, Luminita, to move to Spain and get married.

“I had to accept any job opportunity to be able to maintain my family. I used to work as a postman, a construction worker and I even opened a second-hand store. Then, my wife and I decided for me to go to Romania to get my truck driver’s license so I could have a more stable job. But I kept searching for more things to do because that wasn’t my dream.

“I went to Timișoara, and my brother gave me a steering wheel to wrap in leather. I didn’t know that it was possible to do that, so I told him that I would buy a case from the store. He told me that he didn’t want that and that he wanted it custom made. I went to a guy that wrapped steering wheels in leather named Silviu. I was just observing how he was doing his job and I was fascinated by his work. I was just like a little kid in Legoland. I felt like I was being told that I had to do this amazing job.

“My wife told me to focus on getting my truck driver's license, but I told her that I would also like to try to have this job which I thought was really amazing and interesting. I got to buy a sewing machine from Romania and I brought it to Spain. When I was trying to put the thread in the machine, I accidentally broke the needle. I didn’t get to accomplish much in Spain.

“In 2015 or 2016, I was thinking of moving to the U.S. with my family. I worked as a truck driver in Spain for about six months, and then we packed our bags and moved to the U.S. I started as a construction worker, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to wrap steering wheels in leather. I was telling my partners from work that I was thinking about wrapping steering wheels, and they told me to go for it. I began searching through the internet to get some thread, leather and more.

“My very first steering wheel that I attempted to wrap took days to finish, I would get out of my garage exhausted.

I wanted to see how someone would react to my new work because for me it was something very satisfying to see what amazing things I could make with my own hands.

“During the week, I would go to shops and garages that had custom cars so I could show them my work. When I saw the shop that I am currently at, I really liked it because I saw that it was very organized and clean. So I told my wife that I wanted to rent a shop for myself to work at with steering wheels; I could only rent a room at that shop, but that was just enough space for me. I asked the owner of the place if I could rent a room there, and he said that I could. I was very happy when I was told that I could rent that room.

“In September, I organized all of my things in my new place and I made myself a table to work on with leather and other stuff. This was where my new adventure began because I was around only exotic cars and that was how my perspective changed and went to the next level. People started talking about me and recommending me.

“I started going to every car event that I possibly could and sometimes I would even go to three events on Saturdays. One of the events takes place in Scottsdale, Barrett-Jackson; I would go around there with my business cards and a steering wheel, and people would ask me why I was carrying a steering wheel with me. This year was amazing for me because finally I was able to put up a stand at Barrett-Jackson. I had some customers that would come over to my stand and congratulate me because I got to put my stand at the biggest car auction in the world. It was tiring but I enjoyed it because I was doing it with passion.

“When a customer tells me a genuine ‘thank you’ for the product it means a lot to me, more than receiving the money. I finally have a job that I actually love and I believe it’s the best job that I could ever have. I get to live in a dream that I wasn’t even dreaming about before.”

The extraordinary, shimmering new Bespoke 'Stardust Blue' exterior paint captures the deep blue colour of the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. The finish of the thermal tiles used to shield homebound Space Shuttles from the intense heat of atmospheric re-entry are recalled in the satin-tinted grille surround and aero bumper insert sets.

Drawing further from the materials used in spacecrafts, the Spirit of Ecstasy is created using 3D printing techniques in titanium and finished with a thin layer of blue-tinted lacquer which adds pearlescence while revealing the titanium’s grained texture. The Black Badge infinity logo and ‘Blue Shadow’ Private Collection name are engraved on the Spirit of Ecstasy base and infilled with Charles Blue. A Mercedes-Benz 1937 540 K Special Roadster was judged Best of Show at the 72nd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and a 1967 Ferrari 412P Berlinetta, offered at Bonhams Quail Lodge, topped all auction sales at $30.25 million during 2023 Monterey Car Week in August.

Owned by Jim Patterson of the Patterson Collection in Louisville, Kentucky, the Pebble Beach Concours-winning Mercedes-Benz roadster is one of just three similar cars surviving and represents the consecutive year an RM Restoration car has won Best in Show. With this podium, Mercedes-Benz now has 10 Bests, most in event history; prior to this, Bugatti and Mercedes-Benz were tied.

“This 540K balances strength with sweeping lines and style, and its history is unique,” says Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “In talking with Jim about this car, I was impressed by the time and thought invested in this restoration. Every piece of this beautiful Mercedes-Benz was researched so carefully to honor its history.”

Patterson adds, “In Kentucky, you know, we talk about winning the Derby. Well, there’s such a thing as winning the Triple Crown. And so I’ve won this Concours twice before today. This is a Triple Crown for me.”

The concours welcomed 216 cars from 18 countries and 30 states. Contenders for Best in Show included another Mercedes-Benz, the Auriga Collection’s 1930 710 SS Special Roadster; a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Corto Figoni Cabriolet; and the 1939 Delahaye 165 Figoni et Falaschi Cabriolet owned by the Peter Mullin Automotive Museum Foundation.

More than $2.68 million was raised for charity this year, bringing the event’s total charitable donations to $37-plus million to date. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these funds will benefit more than 90 local charities, benefitting the lives of 10,000-plus children every year in Monterey County, Button says.

Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, hosted its 19th sale at the venue during the week prior, grossing $95-plus million from 133 lots sold. The top car was an unrestored 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, which sold for $9,465,000. The auction house also set a world record for Mercer with the sale of a 1914 Type 35-J Raceabout, $4,790,000. Another Brass Era car, a 1913 Lozier Type 72 Meadowbrook Runabout, brought $1,765,000,

a marque record.

RM Sotheby’s Tops All

RM Sotheby’s 26th-annual Monterey auction totaled a carweek-leading $164 million, the third most successful Monterey result in the company history, with an 86% sell-through. A 1957 Jaguar XKSS was the top seller at $13,205,000.

Ferraris posted five of the top ten sales, including the second and third slots, a 1959 Pinin Farina-designed Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupe Series III, $6,605,000, and a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti, $5,395,000. Two great 1930s cars were among these leaders: a 1933 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Convertible Victoria by Dietrich, $3,305,000; and a 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ ‘Sweep Panel’ Dual-Cowl Phaeton by LaGrande, $3,030,000. The more recent 2012 Lexus LFA broke a model world record, selling above estimate at $1.1 million.

Bidders participated from more than 40 countries for the three-day event, with 20% first-time registrants, indicating continued growth and interest in the collector car marketplace.

The barn-find Lost & Found Collection was a great success. The 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I by Pinin Farina generated $1,875,000, while the legendary 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C Alloy by Scaglietti brought $3,305,000. Additionally, the 1956 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupe Series I by Pinin Farina, showcasing its beautiful wear and tear, went to a new garage for $2,810,000.

“Following last year’s incredible success in Monterey, we are quite pleased with our team’s ability to source an incredible group of cars, ranging from pre-war classics through to modernday hypercars. The results speak for themselves,” says Gord Duff, RM’s Global Head of Auctions.

A 1956 Ferrari Superamerica “Superfast 1” was “Best of Show” at the 2023 The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California.

Owned by Anne Brockinton Lee, the 1956 Ferrari 410 Superamerica "Superfast 1,” Chassis 0483SA, is the only 410 Superamerica with a 4.9-liter Lampredi V-12 engine including twin ignition and 24 spark plugs; one of just four special-bodied prototypes for the 410 Superamerica; and the only 410 Superamerica prototype by Pininfarina.

Other award winners at the 20th-annual event include Spirit of The Quail, 1949 Lancia Aprilia Supergioello, owned by Nigel Churcher; Hagerty Drivers Foundation & Preservation Award, 1962 Lancia Appia Convertible Vignale, Bronson Page and Michael Baum; and The Art of Bespoke Award presented by Magneto, 1953 Delahaye 135MS CL Spéciale Faget-Varnet, Anthony Collé.

Technology was celebrated, including the debut of the exotic high-riding Lamborghini Lanzador electric 2+2 concept car;

the global premier of the

MCXtrema track-only electric race car; Bugatti’s Chiron Super Sport “Golden Era”; and W16 Mistral, the U.S. debut of the Rolls-Royce Spectre ultra-luxury electric super coupe; and Automobili Pininfarina's B95 electric “hyper-barchetta” race car.

Four featured classes, including the 50th Anniversary of the 1973 RS Carrera class, joined seven recurring classes at this year’s event. The annual Fireside Chat welcomed Formula One champion and two-time Indy 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi, moderated by Maurice Merrick.

Also car restorer Bill Wallace, owner of Impact Collision Shop in Fountain Hills, and his business partner and friend, Chuck Puth, showed their 1952 Jaguar XK120 during the event, winning a participation award following its meticulous threeyear nut-and-bolts restoration. Says Shanti, Wallace’s daughter and the company’s front office manager, “It was a nice show, and everyone loved the car!”

The 26th-annual Bonhams | Cars Quail Lodge Auction offered 109 lots, achieving a total of $55 million. One of two made, the 1967 Ferrari 412P Berlinetta, chassis 0854, was the auction’s top car at $30.25 million as a thousand people watched to see it become the fourth most valuable Ferrari ever sold at auction. The very special Prancing Horse had participated in the FIA World Championship of Makes, Le Mans 24-Hours, Belgian Spa 1,000 Kilometers and the BOAC 500. The result surpasses the previous record, also held by Bonhams | Cars, for a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W198, which sold for $29.6 million in 2013.

“Thanks to its devoted lineage of owners and the steward-

ship of its seller, the 412P stands as an enduring piece of art that honors the Ferrari legacy,” says Rupert Banner, Global Head of Specialists at Bonhams | Cars. “It was a privilege to be entrusted with its sale and to attain such an exceptional outcome that respects that fully.”

Another top car was a 1966 Porsche 906/ ‘Carrera Six’ TwoSeat Endurance Racing Coupe, $2 million, a world record for the model. This highly original matching-numbers example was driven by Shintaro Taki, Kenjiro Tanaka, Mashiro Hasemi, and Peter Bellamy and won at the Suzuka 1,000 Kilometers in 1967 and 1969 and the Suzuka 500 Kilometers in 1968.

In addition, a 1909 Lorraine-Dietrich 16.4-Liter Grand Prix Two-Seater delivered $1.27 million, and a 1949 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Cabriolet, with Dubos coachwork and one of only three surviving short chassis models, $2-plus million.

Mecum Goes Wild for Ferraris

Mecum Monterey 2023 generated $45 million at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa’s Del Monte Golf Course, led by a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C Alloy Berlinetta (Lot F84) that brought $3.41 million; six of the top 10 cars surpassed $1 million.

Ferraris dominated, with seven of the top 10 slots, including a 3,417-mile 1990 Ferrari F40 (Lot S96), $2.53 million; a 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II (Lot F89), the first of only 12 built, $1.84 million; and a 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS (Lot F91), $1.76 million.

Private vehicle collections sold for $19.21 million, including the Veloce, Schnell & Fast Sports Car Collection, 21 vehicles, $12,910,000; The Don Williams Estate Collection, eight vehicles, $1,010,990; and the Mike and Debbie Rogers Datsun Collection, eight cars, $1,037,655, with a 1969 Datsun Fairlady Z432 (Lot S82), $297,000.

A 1956 Porsche 356A 1500 GS Carrera Speedster (Lot F96) took the No. 7 spot, $935,000; a 1971 Chevrolet Corvette ZR2 Convertible (Lot S97), one of only two produced, $863,500; and a 1948 Packard Super 8 Convertible Victoria (Lot S118.1), most recently owned by basketball legend Kareem AbdulJabbar, a six-time NBA champion and the second-highest NBA all-time scorer.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Marks 70 Years of Corvette

More than 53,000 Visitors celebrated seven decades of “America’s Sports Car” during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna. The GM Heritage Museum brought six stellar examples, including the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning C8.R and the CERV I, II and III advanced prototypes.

Others included the Corvette SS prototype from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and the three 1960 Cunningham Corvettes including the first Corvette to win its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans; two of the original five Corvette Grand Sports; and the 1966 Daytona and Sebring class-winning Roger Penske Corvette. Corvette racing legend Ron Fellows was Grand Marshal.

“Walking throughout the paddock and Hagerty Marketplace during the week, I could see the happy families truly enjoying the activities,” recalls John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “It’s all possible through the visionary work of everyone behind the scenes who work tirelessly to be able to produce this renowned event for everyone to enjoy.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion annually recognizes the spirit of competition with extraordinary cars. This year’s recipients included Peter Giddings Memorial Award, Ivan Zaremba, 1935 Railton Light Sport Tourer; Ken Miles Award, Nick Grewal, 1959 Lotus; Phil Remington Award, presented

by Ford, Pedro Vela of the REVS Institute; and Bonhams Award – Alastair Chalmers, 1975 Chevron.

The Rolex Awards are presented to drivers who represent Overall Excellence in each of ten Groups during the Saturday races. A few examples: Group 1: 1955–1967 SCCA Production-Small Displacement, William Lyon, 1960 Porsche RS60 Spyder; Group 5: Ragtime Racers Exhibition, Julien Pearl, 1911 White Speedster; Group 8: 1966–1972 Historic Trans-Am, Jim Hague in a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302; Group 10: 1955–1967 SCCA Production-Large Displacement, Jeff Abramson for his 1964 Chevrolet Corvette.

And, in the Hillclimb, Thomas Merrill set a record of 37 seconds for an electric vehicle in a 2023 Drako GTE.

Manufacturers such as Pagani, Koenigsegg, and Hennessey Performance were seen at the Exotics on Broadway, where 55,000-plus people, 250 cars and 40 vendors were present. The estimated value of the cars exhibited was between $450 to $500 million.

“We started this event for all automotive enthusiasts to see these works of art that are not available to the masses,” says Ramin Arami, managing partner for the event. “We are so excited to see how quickly this event has become a fans favorite and truly ‘The People’s Show.’ We are grateful to the

owners and manufacturers that share these beauties with the world at Exotics On Broadway.”

The 13th annual Little Car Show was held in downtown Pacific Grove on Wednesday of Monterey Car Week. The 2023 event offered 135 vehicles with gas or electric engines no larger than 1800cc. Vehicles included Austin, Moke, Mini, Elva, Abarth, DAF, Manx, Stebins, Jabro, Formosa, Yugo, VW and more. Local businesses also gave out awards. Aliotti’s Victorian Restaurant chose Robert Boerner’s 1961 Porsche Notchback as “The Most Beautiful Car” at the show.

“The show just keeps getting better and better each year. Increasing the maximum engine size to 1800cc opened the show up to many great vehicles that couldn’t previously participate,” says John Moulton, president of Marina Motorsports, the 501c3 that produces The Little Car Show. “We’re thrilled to once again support Pacific Grove Youth Center and Veterans Transition Center of California through fun with cars.”

This Michigan car museum has a Tucker and a turbine, electrics long before Teslas, a Civil War-vintage stagecoach, historic organs and automobilia that will make you sing praises for the old times.

The collection at Stahls Automotive Museum in Chesterfield, about 30 minutes north of Detroit, comprises 220-plus cars; staff alternates about 100 in the showroom.

Ted Stahl purchased the first car for the collection, a 1930 Ford Model A Roadster, from a local resident in 1995; it’s still on the floor. Stahl was invited to show it at a local show, “Eyes On Design”; he met other collectors and saw many beautiful cars, explains Terrí Coppens, the museum general manager.

The earliest vehicle in the collection is an 1860 Abbott Downing Stage Coach. The newest vehicle is a 2000 golf cart converted into the “Whoville Family Sedan” for the Jim Carrey Grinch movie, the newest production vehicle a 1974 BMW R90/6 Motorcycle and the newest production car is a 1970 wrought-iron VW Beetle.

The collection even has a mechanical elephant and movie cars.

“We don’t limit ourselves to certain genres or makes; we choose cars because of their story,” Coppens says. “We have over 100 different car models that many have never heard of. We also have automated musical instruments and large dance hall organs, including a 1920 Wurlitzer theater organ.

A Century-Plus of Classics

Trey Brand, the historian for Stahls Auto Collection, takes us for a quick ride, stopping at the oldest car first and continuing into the future:

•1905 Columbia XXXV Open Drive Brougham — The oldest electric vehicle in the collection demonstrates how early car design was heavily influenced by carriage builders.

The Electric Vehicle Company manufactured it. “The limited range and need for charging meant most electrics stayed in or near major cities,” Brand says, adding that because they required an electrified home, the cars mostly went to the wealthy.

This Columbia is a brougham, which was originally a style of carriage, in which the driver sits in the open, position at

the front. This was not a problem for the owners, as most had chauffeurs.

Prominent early collector and historian Henry Austin Clark Jr. owned the car first. He displayed it in his world-famous Long Island Automotive Museum for many years until another prominent collection stewarded it from 1982–2018.

This Columbia features a recent exterior and mechanical restoration, but the interior is unrestored. The leather seats, door panels, carpets and sunshades are also probably original.

“It’s an imposing machine, with massive artillery wheels and solid rubber tires of 38 and 42 inches in diameter,” Brand says. He explains that rather than a single motor driving a shaft or chain to the rear axle, the Mark XXXV features an unusual dual-motor layout with the two huge electric motors powering ring gears affixed to the inside of each wheel.

from his father, who was enamored over the Flyer after its famous win in “The Great Race” in 1908, when a 1907 model won the global endurance race from New York to Paris. Teams competed to be the first to cross the continental United States, sail to Japan, cross Asia and Europe to arrive in the French capital. Only three teams finished the race, with the Thomas Flyer first.

Sachreiter drove his Thomas until 1918, when he left for WWI. On his return to the States, his father gave him a Marmon, and the Thomas was stored.

In the 1950s Sachreiter entrusted Horseless Carriage Club of North America members Jack and Barbara White to recommission the Thomas. In 1958, it made its first appearance at a tour in Reno, Nevada. The younger Sachreiter and his wife Lillie Anne toured the car throughout the next decade, earning numerous dash plaques, which have remained with the car.

In the 1960s, the Sachreiters’ Thomas interested Bill Harrah, the well-known collector whose Reno, Nevada, car collection became the National Automobile Museum. Harrah befriended

the Sachreiters and toured with them regularly and eventually purchased the car from them. Following Harrah’s death in 1978, a prominent European collector displayed and maintained the car for the 30 years. Stahls Auto Collection became the fourth owner in 2014.

The Thomas Flyer was produced in Buffalo, New York, by the E. R. Thomas Motor Company. Erwin Ross Thomas founded the company and would lead it until 1911. The first Thomas automobiles appeared in 1903, small runabouts in the mediumpriced field. Production quickly shifted to a larger chassis in 1904 which was branded the Thomas Flyer. The larger and more luxurious cars attracted more buyers.

The massive 440-cubic-inch engine produced 64 horses @ 1,500 rpm. Even when new, it was a pricey $3,500, equal to today’s $106,358, Brand explains.

•1913 Edison Electric — In the mid-1950s, this early electric was discovered behind a garage on London’s North Circular Road, either by Reg Taverner of the Vintage Car Collector or the Sharpe Brothers of Gables Garage at Raleigh in Essex, England.

1910 Thomas Flyer Model M 6-40

After the death of the previous owner, Terry Sharpe, and its sale to Bob Burrel of Chelmsford in Essex, Dave Unsworth repaired it in 2002, body-off-frame. He replaced the driver’s seat and rear seat cushion, cleaned the rest of the interior and replaced the rusted-out front trunk with an aluminum panel. He also changed the original artillery-style wheels with wire wheels.

This car was built by coachbuilder Offord of George Street, near Portman Square in London. The chassis bears the stamping “Edison 1” by Arrol-Johnson, and the wheel-hubs are cast with that name.

This Edison resembles the Arrol-Johnston-Edison electric described in The Autocar of December 1913, with its long cantilever rear springs. However, the forward driving position and transmission layout are entirely different and the batteries are 15 12-volt 950 Ah batteries which have replaced the longgone original Edison NiFe units.

The 3,300-pound car attains 25 mph. The transmission is a shaft drive to live rear axle. The front suspension is beam axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. The brakes are drum.

•1921 Chevrolet 490 Roadster — In 1912, ousted General Motors founder William C. “Billy” Durant started Chevrolet and tried to regain control of what would soon become the nation’s largest car manufacturer. Chevrolet joined the General Motors family in 1915, which was competing with Ford. The 1921 Chevrolets totaled 76,370 cars, while then-leader Ford sold 1,437,061 Model Ts. In 1927, GM surpassed Ford.

The brand honors Swiss-born race car driver and mechanic Louis Chevrolet. Early cars were designed by Chevrolet and French engineer Etienne Planche. The OHV 171-cid inline engine has 21.7 horsepower through a 3-speed transmission. This fully restored car is painted in the only color offered in 1921, black. New the car was $785.

•1936 Stout Scarab — It was an automobile like no other in its day, with a wide, all-encompassing beetle-like body. Designed by William B. Stout, an aeronautical and automotive engineer who also helped to design the Ford Tri-Motor airplane, the Scarab was designed to minimize wind resistance and maximize aerodynamic efficiency, Brand explains.

“No fenders, headlights, or running boards provide drag, unlike contemporary cars of the period,” he says. “Instead of a separate body mounted on a frame, the Stout utilized a unibody construction, with the structure of the car being partially provided by the skin. This allowed the car to be much lighter, like Stout’s airplane designs.”

Ford’s 221-cd 85-horsepower flathead V-8 provided the power, which is taken to the rear wheels by a 3-speed transaxle of Stout’s design, with a custom chain transfer case. Maybe eight or nine were built and possibly four exist.

•1963 Chrysler Turbine — The Chrysler turbine engine program began during the late 1930s. Multiple prototypes completed long-distance trips in the 1950s and early 1960s. The A-831 engines that powered the 1963 Turbine could operate on many different fuels, required less maintenance

and lasted longer than conventional piston engines, although they were much more expensive to produce, he says.

The Italian Carrozzeria Ghia prepared the bodywork, and Chrysler completed the assembly in Detroit. A total of 55 cars were manufactured: five prototypes and 50 cars for a public user program. The test cars were painted in “Turbine Bronze” paint.

When the user program ended in 1966, Chrysler reclaimed the cars; Chrysler preserved only nine and kept three. The rest had their engines disabled and were given to museums across the United States.

This chassis #991231 was donated to Harrah’s Automobile Collection of Reno, Nevada. The car would stay in original but inoperable condition while owned by Harrah. When he died in 1978, it was sold to Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza and former Detroit Tigers owner.

In the late 1980s, Monaghan sold the Turbine to Frank Kleptz of Indiana, who returned the engine to operational condition with the help of GE Engine Services and Chrysler. The engine originally used to power Turbine Car #991231 was damaged while used by Kleptz; it has been replaced with another operational engine, #831-2-044. Stahl’s Auto Collection acquired the Turbine Car in 2021.

•1968 Gen 11 “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” — The “Chitty Beta,” was built for and used during the filming of the 1968 film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Eight cars were built, which included “Chitty Prime,” the car used for most driving scenes. “Chitty Beta” was only used in short scenes and features in only three minutes of screen time. Chitty Beta was also supposedly built slightly smaller than the “Prime” car. This “Beta” car was used in the American promotional tour for the film’s release.

The car was eventually purchased by and displayed at the Cars of the Stars Motor Museum in 2000. In 2011 “Chitty Beta” was sold to Michael Dezer of the Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection. Stahls Auto Collection acquired it from him in 2022.

The museum is open to the public every Tuesday 1–4 p.m. and the first Saturday of the month 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Cruise Nights” are held in the summer and various other events throughout the year. The largest are “Autos for Autism” to raise funds for a local autism charity and Veterans Day Open House. Donations received are given to a veterans charity. On public days, the museum does not charge admission but accepts donations at the door.
