You’ll find a variety of youth sports offered on Pages 13-17, while adult sports are highlighted on Page 19. Pick up a tennis racquet and visit Lebsack Tennis Center at Redstone Park for lessons, leagues and socials.

Spring months in Colorado also mean snowy days followed by sun and blue skies. Our crews take pride in clearing trails and sidewalks along arterial roads around Highlands Ranch so you can maintain your active lifestyle, even when snow has fallen. A look back at the Mansion’s history Who is the pretty little girl in the portrait located in the Mansion’s west bedroom? Her name is Joan Phipps. She is the daughter of Lawrence Phipps, Jr., the last private owner of the Mansion. Phipps Jr. had several children, but Joan was the only one who ever lived at the Mansion with him.

Renew the Ranch

Recycle Your Bicycle

The Metro District is planning a little spring cleaning this year and needs your help.

Volunteers of all ages will team up at Renew the Ranch, a one-day event for residents to come together to help keep Highlands Ranch beautiful.

Don’t toss those old bicycles—instead donate them to Project ReCycle. The Metro District partners with Project ReCycle at ReCycle Your Bicycle, a one-day bicycle donation drive in Highlands Ranch. Project ReCycle’s goal is to provide smiles to children all over Colorado by donating bicycles to kids in need.

Project ReCycle collects bicycles, spruces them up and gets them into the hands of children. If your bicycle is broken, they still want it. Bicycles that cannot be brought back to life will be taken apart and the parts will be used on other bicycles.

Visit Volunteer Connect today More than 6,800 volunteers in Douglas County know Volunteer Connect is the key resource to find local volunteer opportunities. In 2016, an average of 190 new volunteers per month discovered the online resource. So what are you waiting for?

Volunteer Connect is an interactive website that allows you to locate multiple volunteer opportunities throughout the county all in one place. It’s one stop shopping to meet your volunteer needs.

There are individual, family and group opportunities to choose from.

The website is a project of the Partnership of Douglas County Governments and was created to sustain a culture of volunteerism throughout the county. What began as a site that posted volunteer activities for the nine members of the partnership, including the Metro District, has grown in 2016 to include volunteer opportunities for nonprofits throughout the county. And it continues to grow, with new organizations, like these shown below, added all the time.

Employee spotlight on Amber Garrett Amber Garrett has worked for the Metro District for nine years as a recreation coordinator, after working one season as a youth baseball/softball supervisor. Throughout the year Amber helps organize leagues for thousands of participants.

In her free time she loves to snowboard, golf, hike and spoil her nephews. She is also an assistant pitching coach for the ThunderRidge High School varsity softball team and never misses a home Broncos game.

What is the best thing about Highlands Ranch recreation?

Seeing kids grow through the program over the years is very cool. I’ve seen some players in T-ball uniforms that are now playing at the high school level.

What are five words that best describe you?

Encouraging, goal-oriented, athletic, happy and loyal.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The best part of the job is being able to see all of your hard work in action. Everything from recruiting volunteer coaches, to ordering uniforms to putting teams together comes together in a result you can easily see when you go out to a field and see a game being played.

All of our staff works hard to make recreation come to life. We have a lot of programs and we all work hard to make sure they are well organized.

Local Government Updates

C-470 Express Lanes project in full swing Construction has begun on the C-470 Express Lanes project. It spans 12.5 miles between I-25 and Wadsworth Boulevard. Those traveling this corridor will see project signs, construction equipment and increased activity now through completion of the project, estimated for 2019.

Work will take place in segments. The first segment includes the area between Lucent and Quebec St. The first phase, currently underway, includes widening the existing bridges at S. Broadway and University Boulevard, and working on trail realignment of the Centennial Trail, which runs adjacent to C-470. In addition, temporary concrete barriers have been set along the shoulder on C-470 to provide a buffer between the traffic and construction workers.

The C-470 Express Lanes project construction cost is $276 million. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has identified $110.6 million in state and federal funding, Douglas County is contributing $10 million, and the remaining amount will be funded through loans repaid from toll revenue.

Upon completion of the project, it is projected motorists will see a savings of up to 18 minutes for those using the new express lanes when traveling westbound from I-25 to Wadsworth Boulevard during peak commute hours.

Future of the High Line Canal The High Line Canal stretches 71 miles through the Denver metro area and connects diverse ecosystems and communities. In January 2017, the Metro District Board of Directors adopted a resolution supporting the High Line Canal Conservancy’s vision plan for the future of the canal. The conservancy conducted extensive public outreach during 2016 to gather input about the canal and the recreational and environmental resources it has to offer.

More than 100,000 people participated in the outreach process through public open houses, online surveys and community events. Their responses shaped the vision plan, which looks forward at what the canal can be in the future and is defined by a series of guiding principles and objectives.

Some of the plan’s objectives include maintaining the peaceful character of the canal, protecting and improving wildlife habitat, improving connectivity along the canal, providing enhancements and increasing awareness of the canal.

The Metro District has been a part of the High Line Canal working group since 2010, and has supported the vision and master planning process with grants of $10,000 in 2016 and $15,000 in 2017. Visit highlinecanal.org for more information about the High Line Canal or the vision plan.

Tips for reporting a streetlight outage Streetlights in Highlands Ranch are operated and maintained by Xcel Energy.

Streetlights are billed through the Metro District’s utility bill for the convenience of customers. The streetlight charge is intended to recover costs paid by the Metro District to Xcel Energy for streetlight electricity and maintenance.

The residential fee applies to streetlights on both arterial and residential streets. The commercial fee is set to recover a portion of the cost of arterial streetlights only.

To report a streetlight outage, write down the pole number, cross streets, and call the Xcel Energy Customer Service line at 1-800-895-1999. You may also visit Xcel’s website at xcelenergy.com/Outages_and_ Emergencies/Outdoor_Lighting_ Outages.

Redstone Skate Park renovation Renovation of the street skating area of Redstone Skate Park is anticipated to begin in late March. The goal of the project is to create a more durable and innovative design that appeals to skateboarders and riders at a variety of skill levels.

Originally built in 2001, Redstone Skate Park is a 22,000-square-foot fenced concrete facility that is a popular destination throughout the year.

The east side of the park currently has concrete quarter pipes along the perimeter and three ramp boxes. The proposed design will replace the three ramp boxes with a large street skate plaza. The area will include banks, ledges, stairs and handrails that will flow into the existing quarter pipes.

During the renovation, the skate park will be closed. However the skate park at Tanks Park, 10371 S. Broadway, will be an alternative for users. The renovation is anticipated to be completed by the end of May, weather dependent. Project updates and design plans will be posted to highlandsranch.org.

Grab your binoculars and go for an early morning bird watching hike in the open space.

Fish at Redstone Park Pond or Fly’n B Park Pond. Kids younger than 16 do not need a fishing license, according to regulations from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Hit the courts at Lebsack Tennis Center in one of three spring break tennis camps tailored for 7- to 16-year-olds. Visit redstone.mytennisclub.net to find more information and to register.

Play horseshoes or bocce ball at Paintbrush Park. Equipment rentals are available for residents for $10/hour.

Visit the Highlands Ranch Mansion, 9950 E. Gateway Drive, during open hours from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

If spring break is snowy . . .

If snow is falling during spring break (March is the snowiest month of the year in Colorado after all), discover a wonderland of beauty with your phone/camera, a sled and some hot chocolate. Make a snow fort, build a snowman and create a day of memories, Colorado style!

The Metro District is hiring seasonal employees in a variety of positions that last between 12 to 40 weeks from February through November. Seasonal employees are vital to the high level of service the Metro District provides to our community.

Green Highlands Ranch

The Green Page Household Chemical Roundups around Douglas County Tri-County Health Department hosts three Household Chemical Roundups in Douglas County every year including an event each August in Highlands Ranch.

Residents are encouraged to drop off any unused or unwanted household chemicals at any of these events.

May 20 – Parker Joint Services Center, 17801 Plaza Dr., Parker 80134 Aug. 12 – Redstone Park, 3280 Redstone Park Cir., Highlands Ranch 80129 Sept. 30 – Town of Castle Rock Utilities, 175 Kellogg Ct., Castle Rock 80109 In 2016, 3,030 households were served and a total of 334,184 pounds of household hazardous waste was collected from the events in Douglas County.

6 tips for safe storage, use and disposal* 1. Read the label first. Information such as how to use the product safely, how to store it and how to dispose of it properly can be found on the label.

2. Buy the right product for the job. Get the least toxic product for the job. Most to least toxic: Danger – Warning – Caution – No warning label.

3. Buy the right amount for your needs. Purchase only what you need.

4. Keep products in their original containers. Products in original containers are easier to dispose because handling instructions are typically printed on the label.

Stormwater restoration at Cheese Ranch Steep slopes, unstable banks and a failed trail crossing moved the Metro District into action to restore the stormwater drainage way through Big Dry Creek at Cheese Ranch Historic & Natural Area.

Channel erosion resulted in vertical banks of nearly 20 feet, banks were collapsing and a lower invert caused the water table to drop, affecting the native vegetation. Add to that a failed trail crossing after a September 2013 storm, and it was time to take action.

In 2014, the channel improvements began with replacing the trail crossing, building sculpted concrete drop structures, and regrading and reshaping the channel. Work continues today along the Big Dry Creek, and when everything is done there will be nine new drop structures and bank restoration through the natural area. The result will stabilize the channel and protect the environment by reducing erosion in the channel bottom and along the banks.

What causes erosion?

Development increases impervious areas (parking lots, streets, rooftops, etc.) which results in larger storm flows and creates year round base flow.

Why do we do it?

As the channels and banks erode, infrastructure (roads, trails, utilities, etc.) may be at risk. Channel degradation can also lower water tables causing trees to die. Shrubs and trees are lost as banks slough off.

Tall, vertical banks can also be a hazard.

5. Never mix chemicals. Mixing chemicals can produce a poisonous gas, and make the chemical difficult to dispose of safely.

How do we do it?

Using drop structures allows elevation to be taken at designated locations so the channel bottom can be flattened to decrease runoff velocities. Banks are graded to remove vertical walls.

6. Dispose of household hazardous waste carefully. The best way to keep a product from becoming hazardous is by using it in its entirety. If you cannot, make sure it is disposed of in a safe manner.

How to dispose of latex paint Water-based latex paint is not hazardous waste and can be safely disposed of with your household garbage once it has been dried out.

Remove the lid from the paint can and mix in kitty litter, dirt, sand or a concretemix to help speed up the drying process. Once the paint is completely dry, dispose of it with your regular household trash.

Unused paint can also be dropped off at many paint stores to be recycled. Check for local drop off locations at paintcare.org.

Don’t set it and forget it Water requirements change throughout the season and so should irrigation run times. Adjusting your irrigation controller throughout the year should become routine. When setting your controller, divide weekly minutes by the number of watering days per week to determine how long to run each zone.

For best results, water no more than three times per week. Water only as needed in April and October, and remember to turn off irrigation systems for the year the second week of October. For more water conservation and efficiency tips, look for the Water Wise Guide in your mailbox in April.

After the winter holiday, Highlands Ranch residents turned out in droves to recycle their Christmas trees. A total of 2,200 trees were recycled into 170 cubic yards of mulch. The mulch was made available free to residents and what remains is used in parks and along parkways throughout the community.

In addition to Christmas tree recycling, the Metro District hosts tree recycling events each spring and fall. The recycling events not only keep the tree limbs and woody plant materials out of the landfill, but also create mulch which is reused in the community.

Mulch provides many benefits to trees and plants. It creates a protective layer for newly established tree roots while providing nutrients and creating high quality soil texture as it decomposes.

The next tree and limb recycling event will be Sunday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Redstone Park, 3280 Redstone Park Circle. Call 303-791-0430 for more information.

Preventing conflicts with coyotes Coyotes live throughout the Denver metro area and sightings around Highlands Ranch are common. Our close proximity to wildlife makes it important to understand how to avoid conflicts with coyotes to keep your pets and family safe.

Coyotes tend to breed from January to March, den from April to May and birth pups from May to June. During any of these times, coyote activity can increase. Additionally, while they are denning and caring for their babies, coyotes may closely watch trail users to make sure they aren’t getting too close to their dens.

Tree recycling program continues to grow

We have a large role in shaping animal behavior. You can help your local wildlife and your neighborhood by following these simple guidelines from Colorado Parks & Wildlife: • Do not feed wildlife. Directly feeding coyotes is illegal in Colorado.

Metro District park rangers are commissioned as code enforcement officers by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Four park rangers patrol the community and foster stewardship through education and information sharing. With more than 30 years of combined experience, the park rangers assist sheriff’s deputies with issues on Metro District property and enforce both county ordinances and Metro District rules and regulations.

“Our purpose is to make sure everyone is being safe and nondestructive throughout our parks and open space,” said Scott Nelson, open space supervisor.

Median, community entrance projects continue The landscape improvements are the last step in a process to enhance the community entries that welcome people to Highlands Ranch. In addition to new concrete and new landscaping in the medians, both the lettering and logo on the stone wall monuments have been updated for a fresher, more contemporary look.

• Walk your dog(s) on a standard leash; do not allow pets to run at large.

• Remove food sources and cover for coyotes and their prey (such as mice and rabbits).

• Haze coyotes off your property or away from you if they approach too closely. Easy methods of hazing coyotes include clapping your hands and yelling, or throwing small rocks, twigs or snowballs in the animal’s direction. The goal is to make the animal uncomfortable without harming it and help reestablish a fear of humans.

• Report individuals feeding coyotes by calling the Metro District at 303-791-2710 or contacting Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

• Encourage your neighbors to follow these guidelines as well.

• Educate yourself and your family about coyotes, their needs, and ways to avoid conflicts. The Open Space Information Center at highlandsranch.org/OSIC is a great resource of information.

On Thursday, May 11, a Metro District park ranger and Colorado Parks & Wildlife manager will conduct a Curious about Coyotes program, which will address what to do when you encounter coyotes and how to deter them from your yard. Turn to Page 22 for more information.

Coyote home audits available

If you are concerned about coyotes in your area, a Metro District park ranger can visit with you and walk your property to make sure shelter, cover, water and food are not available for coyotes. Contact the Metro District at 303-791-2710 to set up a coyote conflict prevention home audit. Improvements started last September with site demolition and the removal of about 30 trees that had been dying or in decline for several years. After careful assessment by Metro District staff, the decision was made to renovate the design of the medians. The medians are located south of Dad Clark Drive, on S. Broadway and University Boulevard respectively. Project updates will be posted to highlandsranch.org.

Diamond Club operates its own facility as a national affiliate of America’s Baseball Camps and is the home of the Colorado Rockies fall scout team. Learn the basics of skateboarding with SkateStart. This fun program is for beginner skateboarders or those who have never tried the sport and want to test it out. Trash for Treasures offers the opportunity for groups and organizations to help keep our public lands clean. Please be sure to bring water.

Scheduling for this program is Tuesday through Saturday. The group leader will choose the day and area to clean up. A minimum of two weeks is required to schedule your group. Bee-utiful Wildflowers with Mom

The ability to use a map and compass are a must when hiking outdoors. Even in this high-tech GPS era, nothing replaces the value of these crucial tools. Learn how to read a map, orient yourself, and find various sites using a map and compass. All participants will get to keep their found treasures as well as a Silva compass, a $12 value. An accompanying adult is required to come along, partner with the child and learn. Class maximum: 10

Join a native plant master and park ranger on a hike up to Highlands Point. Take in the view from the highest point in Highlands Ranch while learning about native wildflowers that grow in the area. Also, discover various native bees that pollinate these wildflowers. Please leave your furry friends at home and wear sturdy shoes. Class maximum: 15

If you are a long time explorer or geocaching is something you have always wanted to try, then bring your smart phone and join a park ranger to search for hidden caches. Does your child like to fish, explore the outdoors and learn about wildlife and ranching? Then this is the camp for them. Campers will get up close and personal with critters, explore the pond, learn wilderness survival and history, and go for hikes. One day of camp will be at the Highlands Ranch Mansion. Participants will make cool crafts and have a daily snack that ties into the day’s theme.

Required Equipment and Clothing:

This class builds on safety and skills from Kiddie Corral I. Students will learn about grooming with a partner, using a saddle and riding with reins. The class ends with a fun horse show on the last day. All classes meet daily Monday through Thursday.

Leadership Douglas County offers insight to local leaders

The Metro District has updated Highlands Ranch maps.

Pick up your free map at the Metro District offices, recreation centers, the James H. LaRue Library in Highlands Ranch or the Chamber of Commerce of Highlands Ranch office.

Leadership Douglas County (LDC) is a program for established and emerging leaders who live or work in Douglas County and want to take a deep dive into local issues, network with top leaders in the region and enhance their opportunities for civic engagement.

The program creates an expectation of servant leadership and builds in real opportunities to teach knowledge and skills through a monthly, day-long program, held on the first Wednesday of each month, October through June, in locations throughout the county. Each month, participants explore a different regional topic and also participate in a leadership development segment. Upon graduation, participants become the planning committee for the upcoming year’s class, putting to use their own program experience, as they complete their second year of participation as alumni in the LDC program.
