THIS WEEK’S BIG READ: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE World War One began in the summer of 1914 and hundreds of thousands of soldiers had been killed within months. However, in December, in the battle area known as the Western Front, soldiers stopped fighting to celebrate Christmas together in no man’s land. Late on Christmas Eve, British soldiers heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and putting small fir trees along their trenches. After sharing messages, the troops met on Christmas Day to exchange gifts, take photographs and play some games of football.

GUIDED READING CHALLENGE How long had the troops been fighting for? Where did troops celebrate Christmas together? True or false? There was singing in the trenches. How did the truce come about? What do you think “truce” means based on this story?
