Newsletter Sports Update

Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)

Sports Fixtures and Forthcoming Events Thursday 4 May The Year 7 and Year 9 boys football teams will be playing away against Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in the final game of the season. The bus will leave straight after school at Lumsdale then Starkholmes, it will be returning to both sites after the game.

Monday 8 May Highfields School Athletics Club will be starting on Monday 8 May and is open to all year groups and genders. We will be travelling by bus to Tupton Hall School to use their fantastic track and field facilities, the track is rubberised so will take a spike or trainers. The bus will pick up from Starkholmes and then Lumsdale after school, before going to Tupton. The return journey will drop off at both sites. Letters available from next week with a parental reply - we hope to see lots of you there!

Sports Results Before the holidays our under-13 rugby team took part in the Derbyshire County Rugby Festival which was held at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. Our students were a mix of Year 7 and Year 8 students. The boys played with a very good spirit and were able to score a few tries.

Unfortunately, the strength of the Year 8 only teams shone through in the end. The afternoon was very positive and a big thank you goes to Jimmy who has been coaching the boys for several months voluntarily.

The Year 11 boys football team played their semi-final of the Derbyshire County Cup at Tupton Hall on the final Friday of last term. We played very well in the first half, but unfortunately the hosts capitalised on a loose ball and went in with a 1 - 0 lead at half time. The second half started well as we created some opportunities, but as the half went on they scored a few more goals.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the Year 11 football team for their efforts and behaviour over the last five years, it has been a pleasure to take you to fixtures and you deserve the successes you achieved. Well done boys you are a credit to the school. Thank you.

Highfields School Newsletter Sports Leaders

Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator) Our Sports Leaders and Sports Apprentices have been extremely busy supporting sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community.

Further information on Sports Leadership can be found on the school website http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/SportsLeadership.html Physical Education & Sport Quality Mark Application Rita Hesford of the Association for Physical Education visited Highfields on 4 April in connection with our Physical Education and Sport Quality Mark application. The written application will now be submitted to AfPE and Rita will submit a written report from the meetings she held with Mr Cole (Co-Headteacher), Mr Macdonald (Chair of Governors), Mr Shirtcliffe (Head of PE), the Voice of Sport Student Group and Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator). We will find out the outcome at the beginning of May. Year 10 Health Day On Friday 7 April Highfields’ PE Apprentices helped support our annual Year 10 Health Day. Gifted & Talented Camp 2017 The PE Apprentices have also been working during the Easter holidays at the SSP Gifted and Talented Camp 2017 for Key Stage 2 primary students.

Jordan Spencer and Harry Foster took part one day with James Bates and David Molyneux and Tom Savage took part on day two with James. They supported the delivery of the workshops for Year 3 and 4 talented students from across Rural Derbyshire. These students had been selected from a pentathlon competition held at Highfields.

Harry Foster also gained his Level 2 FA Coaching Award during the Easter holidays – well done Harry!

Highfields School Newsletter Annual Sports Leaders Awards Evening 2017

On Thursday 6 April 2017 our Annual Sports Leaders Awards evening saw a packed Wheeldon hall witness a fantastic celebration of achievement from the Highfields and partner school’s students.

This was our 11th Annual Awards evening with guests of honour Steve Judge, para-athlete and World Champion, together with our very own ex-Highfields student Stephanie Jackson-Horner, GB Aqua Athlete.

The evening began in the dark! Five minutes before the event was due to start there was power cut in the area resulting in a loss of power to Lumsdale, but all good Sports Leaders have to adapt!

This little hiccup did not cause a problem and the evening continued.

Awards were given out to students who had successfully completed the Sports Leaders UK National Awards for:         

The guest speakers were so inspirational and the students are a great credit to themselves and the school. Ranald Macdonald, Chair of Governors, gave a talk about his visit to the Houses of Parliament for the Play Unified Project.

Newsletter School News The Peak Dance Festival Ms Keating

Our Year 9 and Year 10 dance students recently performed at 'The Peak Dance Festival' at the Buxton Opera House on 20 March.

The Year 9 dance was choreographed by Sixth Former Hollie Wells and is a dance club which is led 100% by herself. The Year 10 students performed a dance from their course based on Christopher Bruce's 'Shadows'.

The other schools and organiser commented on how professional and talented our dancers were. A big thank you to Miss Warburton too for chaperoning the trip alongside myself and to all the parents who supported the performance by assisting with lifts and watching the performance.

Newsletter Year 10 Health Day – Friday 7 April Mrs Turner

The Health Day was a great success receiving lots of positive feedback from the Year 10 students.

The students had workshops on Breast Cancer & Testicular Cancer awareness, Drugs, Relationships & STI`s, Self-Defence, Zumba and Trampolining.

Year 9 PSHE The Amy Winehouse Foundation has been working closely with our Year 9 students in PSHE and their workshops have enriched our drugs programme.

Year 8 L2L The Year 8 students in L2L have been set a real challenge by the Company MVIS (Mobile Visual Information Systems) to present innovative ideas about how their technology can be used by the Construction Industry to keep their workers safe on building sites. The students who come up with the best proposals will have the opportunity of a VIP visit.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Reduced canteen service for Years 9-13 at Lumsdale - 4 May 2017 Polling Day The Wheeldon Hall at Lumsdale will be used as a Polling Station on Thursday 4 May and out of use during the day. Catering arrangements for students in Years 9 to 13 will be limited and a reduced menu of hot/cold take way foods will be offered – details as follows:   

No breakfast provision will be available in the morning at Lumsdale.

Food during morning break will be served in the Sixth Form canteen. A selection of pizza slices, paninis, bacon cobs, sausage cobs, toasties, toast, sandwiches and drinks will be available.

Lunch time will be a reduced service in the Sixth Form canteen, consisting of beef burger cobs, hot dog baguettes, veggie burger cobs, hot baguettes, cold sandwiches, drinks and tray bakes.

Students at Lumsdale will be reminded in assemblies next week and if they do not wish to purchase the options available above on this day, they will be advised to bring in a packed lunch.

We will also be running a similar service at Lumsdale for the General Election on 8 June – further details to follow nearer the time.

Uniform Thank you for supporting us to uphold our agreed uniform standards. However, we have noticed a few students are wearing hoodies. Our school policy states that hoodies should not be worn on site. Instead, students should wear coats which have the advantage of being waterproof and in keeping with our professional working environment.

We are notifying students in assemblies that if they are wearing hoodies instead of school uniform they will be confiscated until the end of the school day. We would appreciate your continuing support by ensuring that your child does not wear a hoodie on the school site.

Other key reminders about uniform are that if jumpers are worn in school they should be the Highfields branded black school jumper with the school logo on. Skirts should be of an appropriate length for a work setting, towards the knee. We would encourage both girls and boys to wear smart black trousers. We ask for tailored trousers not jeans, and shoes not trainers.

By paying attention to these things, and having your continued support for them, we can work to be the best we can in all areas.

Advanced Notice: Year 8 & Year 9 Girls HPV Vaccinations – 11 May The Immunisation Nursing Team are offering Year 8 and Year 9 girls the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in school on Thursday 11 May. The HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and consists of two doses, the first in Year 8 and the second in Year 9.

Year 9 students will receive their second dose if they were seen last year, however any Year 9 student who missed the vaccination last year can also be seen by the Nursing Team.

Vaccination consent forms were issued to students in Year 8 before the holiday. Year 9 students will already have signed consent for the HPV vaccine in Year 8 so an additional form is not required.

Newsletter School Buildings and Facilities Consultation During the course of this year staff and students at Highfields have been involved in discussions around potential improvements to the school's building and facilities. These discussions have been led by a small working group which has included Helen Crane, Co-Chair of Governors, and Rob Tozer, parent and owner of 1st Planner - a local company which works with a range of organisations to support efficient and effective use of resources.

As part of these discussions staff reflected on and discussed responses to the question: 'To what

extent do the school's buildings and facilities support our core purpose to be an inclusive, happy community that values every individual and inspires them to achieve their full potential?'

The question posed to students, which was discussed in tutor groups and further at Student Parliament was 'How do you think we should improve our buildings, rooms and facilities to help us

all to 'be the best we can'?'

Medical Appointments Years 9-11 Please be aware that any student in Years 9 to 11 needing to leave school during the school day to attend a medical appointment is required to show a letter from a parent/carer or the medical appointment letter/appointment card to Mrs Harper before they are allowed to sign out. If no confirmation is received the student will not be allowed to sign out until Mrs Harper has spoken to a parent/carer.

If your child arrives late to school, please provide a note to explain why they are late or alternatively contact Mrs Harper directly via email (aharper@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk) or on extension 364.

This is to ensure the safety of students.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.

Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)

If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence will be sent to parents/carers via email only.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
