Fixtures: Tuesday 7 November 2017 U13 badminton and U16 table tennis teams are playing a repeat fixture from last week, to be held at Queen Elizabeth’s at 4pm (returning at 6.30pm)
Thursday 9 November 2017 U13 girls football fixture at Noel Baker School (Derby) students leaving at 2pm for kick-off at 3.20pm
Results: Under 13 Rugby - Monday 30 October 2017 On Monday the U13 boys Rugby Team travelled to Ratcliffe College for a friendly fixture. The boys showed character and played well in many areas. It was the first outing for school for some of the team. Well done!
Under 14 County Cup match - Wednesday 1 November 2017 Last week saw our Year 9 boys travel to Tupton on Wednesday in the ESFA National Cup. We played some great football and took the lead early in the second half, only to be pegged back 2 mins later. Unfortunately, we ended up drawing the game but losing on penalties.
Under 16 badminton & Under 13 table tennis tournaments - Thursday 2 November 2017 On Thursday we visited Lady Manners to play an U16 badminton and U13 table tennis competition against the hosts and Queen Elizabeth’s. QEGS took the honours in both competitions and Highfields were a valiant second. Well done!

Sports Leaders News Young Highfields Ambassador Assemblies This week saw the Young Highfields Ambassadors leading assemblies for Year 10 and Year 7. The Platinum, Gold and Silver Ambassadors were advocating the Highfields programmes and an active healthy lifestyle. Leading assemblies this week were Alisha (Year 11) and Joe and Emma (Year 13).
Apprentices Mrs Allen has been out visiting Miss Spencer, 3rd year PE apprentice at her placement school at Carsington and Hopton Primary and Mr Molyneux who is working in Elton Primary this year for a day and a half.
This Girls Can event On Wednesday 1 November All Saints, South Darley and St Joseph’s Primary schools attended the This Girls Can event held at the Arc.
Highfields Key Stage 2 SEN Sports Afternoon On Thursday 2 November our Key Stage 2 SEN sports afternoon took place at our upper school site, Lumsdale. Sports covered were sitting volleyball, new age curling and goalball. The Highfields Sports Leaders led a great event.

School News Highfields Library to be Case Study at Reading Agency Mrs Brown
Highfields Library has been chosen by The Reading Agency to be a case study school for 2017/18. Highfields was chosen because of how well the library engages with the programmes of The Reading Agency through Reading Hacks, the section of The Reading Agency promoting reading to young people. To start off our case study year, Reading Hacks is now promoting Year 10 Book Club’s book-themed bake-off to other young people nationally. Last year, the then Year 9 Book Club planned and ran this event, which was their own creative book event. They gained valuable organisational skills in the process and won an award from The Reading Agency.

Parent/Carer Notices Invitation to parents/carers and students in Year 11: Sixth Form Open Evening – Monday 6 November (6-8.30pm) We look forward to welcoming parents/carers and students in Year 11 who would like to join us in the Sixth Form in September 2018, to attend our Sixth Form Open Evening. We would encourage you to speak to a variety of subjects – those you might just be curious about, as well as the ones you are most interested in at the moment. At A Level, subjects can be different to what you have experienced at GCSE, and it is worth keeping an open mind in order to help you make the best decision for you. This is your best chance to find out as much as possible about all your options. We suggest you look through the subjects on offer in the prospectus before coming to the evening • Sixth Form Prospectus: http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/pdfs/InfoPDFs/SixthFormProspectus.pdf • Open Evening leaflet: http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/pdfs/NewsPDFs/SixthFormOpenEvening.pdf The leaflet will give you the answers to some key questions and we suggest you read this before speaking to staff about the subjects. On the evening you will also be given a map of the school showing you where each subject will be located. Deciding on the right subject can have a real impact on grades at the end of Sixth Form so this is the start of an important process. Programme The school will be open from 6pm until 8.30pm for you to visit. There will be a short talk in the Wheeldon Hall to introduce the Sixth Form and the process of choosing options (no longer than 15 minutes). We would like to give the talks to half the year group at a time – in order to ensure that we do not have the whole year group arriving at once in the classrooms. Please could you look at the times set out below, and if you are able to do so, attend the talks at the time given for your son or daughter’s current form group. For parents/carers and students from outside of Highfields, please feel free to join either talk/form group. The priority is on you speaking to subjects, so if you are short on time, we will make the contents of the talk available to you in a leaflet. Introductory Talk 6.00pm 7.00pm

Newsletter Invitation to parents/carers of students with SEND: SEND Coffee Morning – Tuesday 7 November 9.30-10.30am at Lumsdale We would like to invite parents/carers of SEND students to our SEND coffee morning between 9.30am and 10.30am on Tuesday at Upper School site, where we will discuss Learning Support and SEND provision. You are welcome to pop in for coffee and bring along your ideas and suggestions. Invitation to parents/carers of students in Year 10: Year 10 Curriculum Information Evening – Wednesday 8 November at 6-8pm We would like to invite all Year 10 parents and carers to the Year 10 Information Evening arranged for Wednesday 8 November from 6.00pm in the Wheeldon Hall at Lumsdale. We will provide a summary of the year ahead including:
Detailed information about the requirements of all relevant qualifications and how you can help your child achieve their targets, and beyond, in all of their assessments, including controlled assessments, terminal exams, and speaking and listening exams An explanation of the specifications and how these work in practice Ideas on how to support your child's learning and where to find past exam papers and online resources Examples of good practice and ways to help in preparation for assessment Details of the changes to the new GCSE 1-9 grading system
The evening will begin in the Wheeldon Hall with presentations for GCSE English, Maths, Science and PRS, which all students at Highfields are studying. There will then be four 15-minute sessions in classrooms close to the Wheeldon Hall, covering the four option blocks, enabling you to attend sessions for all of the courses your son/daughter is following this year. We anticipate the event will last two hours and we would encourage your child to attend with you. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Hamrouge at school. School Transport Notice G&J Holmes 453 Bus Service County Transport have informed us that Hackney Road will be closed to traffic from Friday 26 October until Friday 10 November 2017. This closure will affect service 453 which operates to Highfields School. The solution given by County Transport and G&J Holmes is for students who normally board on Hackney Lane to walk to either the Laburnum Public House or Darley Dale Primary School to meet the bus. The service will divert via the A6 and then resume the normal route through Two Dales and Farley.

Community Events 2017 Annual Matlock Horticultural Show Ms H Crane (Co-Chair of Governors)
Early this term, Dave Goodridge (a parent of four children who have attended Highfields) was the driving force behind the 2017 annual Matlock Horticultural Show. This creates an opportunity for the growers and makers of Matlock to display the produce from their gardens and allotments, and increasingly, their other creative talents. As a parent, Dave had been impressed at the high standard of artworks on display in Highfields’ corridors. He contacted Helen Crane, (Co-chair of Governors), who is always looking for opportunities for the wider town to appreciate the talents of its young people, and Kerry Fairbank (Head of Art). Together, they ensured that four striking art works were on display for the Show. The reaction from the public was delight! This week’s maths quiz is … Think about the number 34 567 800. Say this number aloud. Round this number to the nearest million. What does the digit ‘8’ represent? What does the digit ‘7’ represent? Divide this number by 100 and say your answer aloud. Divide this number by 1000 and say your answer aloud.

Last week’s maths quiz answer … In Niatirb they use Cibara numerals. These are the same shape as normal Arabic numerals, but with the meanings in the opposite order. So "0" means "nine", "1" means "eight" and so on. But they write their numbers from left to right and use arithmetic symbols just as we do. So, for example, they use 62 for the number we write as 37. How do the inhabitants of Niatirb write the answer to the sum that they write as 837 + 742?
Solution:
580 The sum is what we would write as 162 + 257 and this equals 419. However, in Niatirb it would be written 580.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
