Fixtures: Monday 30 October 2017 Under 13 boys rugby fixture away against Ratcliffe College – leaving school at 12.45pm, expected return by 6pm.
Tuesday 31 October 2017 Under 14 girls playing in the County Cup against Ashfield at home – kick off 2.30pm Under 13 boys game – awaiting confirmation.
Wednesday 1 November 2017 Under 14 boys are in action in an away game against Tupton in the County Cup - kick off 3.10pm (students to leave school at 2.30pm)
Thursday 2 November 2017 Under 16 badminton and under 13 table tennis teams in tournaments at Lady Manners – leaving at 3.30pm.
Results: Under 12 Girls Derbyshire Cup Fixture - Tuesday 17 October 2017 Miss Warburton
Highfields hosted to Frederick Gent school and it was raining goals! The visitors went ahead in the first half due to a Highfields error, but Highfields hit back and by half time it was 3-2 to the home side. After some tactical changes and a few motivational words from the manager (Scottish FA I am open to offers) the girls were back on the pitch and raring to go. Within the first ten minutes Highfields had scored a further 3 goals, making it 6-2. The away team didn’t give up, continued to push hard and managed to score. Highfields worked hard and continued to create chances, which were rewarded with a further 2 goals. Frederick Gent school pushed for goals but a determined Highfields defence stepped up with some clever defensive tactics, which kept the away side’s key players out of the game. The end result was 8-4, seeing Highfields going through to the next round in the Derbyshire Cup.

Sports Leaders News Primary Schools Tag Rugby On Friday 13 October the Primary Schools Tag Rugby event took place. Eight schools participated with 16 teams totalling 134 competitors. Winners: Darley Dale Primary - Big School event (Years 5 & 6) Lea Primary - Small School event (Years 5 & 6) St Joseph’s Primary School - Years 3 & 4 winners St Joseph’s Primary School - Spirit of the Games winner The winner of the Grand Final of Big School vs Small School event was Darley Dale Primary School who go on to represent Highfields at the SSP event together with St Joseph’s – well done to all taking part!
National School Score Orienteering Championship 2017 On Saturday 14 October the National School Score Orienteering Championships took place at Rother Valley Country Park. Our runners were George and Matt (Year 10) and Peter, Finlay and Leo (Year 8): George (170) Matt (160) Finlay (160) Peter (150) Leo (110)

This was our very first attempt at a national orienteering competition. As a school, both age groups were place 10th - very well done!
Key Stage 1 Multi-Skills Event On Monday 16 October 224 pupils from nine feeder schools took part in our Key Stage 1 Multi-Skills event.

Newsletter Derbyshire Schools Sports Awards On Tuesday 17 October the Derbyshire Schools Sports Awards were held at the Winding Wheel, Chesterfield. Joel was highly commended, Julie was the winner of the Inclusive Leader Award, Alisha won the Health Ambassador Award and Highfields School, along with Chapel-en-le-Frith High School won the Active Schools Award.
Big Schools Mini Soccer Finals On Wednesday 18 October All Saints, St Joseph’s and Darley Dale represented Highfields at the Big Schools Mini Soccer finals – All Saints came 2nd. The Girls Event was also held on Wednesday and Lea came 2nd.
Primary Sports Evening Session Also on Wednesday the final session of the Autumn Term Primary Sports Evening session took place and South Darley were awarded with their certificates.
SSP Cheerfest On Friday 20 October, primary schools attended the SSP Cheerfest.

School News News from our Patron of Reading – Lucy Adlington Lucy Adlington’s new book ‘The Red Ribbon’ was launched at Trafalgar Square, with Lucy wearing a 1940s dress featured in the book. Amazingly, The Red Ribbon was available as a sneaky pre-published book at Highfields BEFORE it was available in London! We’re so ahead of the times here!! Lucy is generously donating brand new copies of books which were her favourite stories as a teenager. These will be featured at Lumsdale library after half term and you can follow @highfieldslib. Key Stage 3 & 4 Awards Evenings At Highfields we are very proud of our students and we like to recognise and reward their efforts and achievements. As such, we hold two annual awards evenings which have taken place over the last two weeks to acknowledge the achievements of students who have completed their Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 courses. Students are nominated by their subject teachers, form tutors and for special individual awards. We received some great photos of the evening. Those featured below have been selected at random – students will be getting their prizes next week!

Autism Interest Group Meeting – 23 November 2017
The Autism Interest Group meeting will be at Lumsdale from 6.30-8pm with Speaker – Janette Ashworth from Derbyshire Autism Services Group attending for discussion and sharing of ideas.

Maths Puzzle Zone We will include a puzzle page each week in our newsletter with the answer to the question in the following week’s newsletter.
This week’s maths quiz is … In Niatirb they use Cibara numerals. These are the same shape as normal Arabic numerals, but with the meanings in the opposite order. So "0" means "nine", "1" means "eight" and so on. But they write their numbers from left to right and use arithmetic symbols just as we do. So, for example, they use 62 for the number we write as 37. How do the inhabitants of Niatirb write the answer to the sum that they write as 837 + 742? Solution:

Last week’s maths quiz answer … In how many whole numbers between 100 and 999 is the middle digit equal to the sum of the other two digits? Solution:
Consider numbers whose first digit is 1. Looking at each possible value for the second digit we find 9 such numbers. 110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176, 187, 198. Similarly, there are 8 numbers starting with 2; 7 numbers starting with 3... Lastly there is only one number starting with 9: 990. Hence the total is 9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 = 45

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
