Sports Update
Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Fixtures: 9 October 2017 The Year 7 boys football team are in action at Starkholmes on Monday in the ESFA National Cup kick off at 3pm.
12 October 2017 The First Team boys rugby are travelling to Ratcliffe College on Thursday for a 3pm kick off. The under 16 boys and girls football are travelling to Anthony Gell on Thursday to play County Cup matches after school.
Results: ESFA National Cup Results Our Year 10 boys football team travelled to Quarrydale Academy in the ESFA National Cup, where they played extremely well and ended up drawing the game at full time 3 - 3. However, as it was the Cup we played 10 minutes of extra time where the hosts scored in the final stages to progress through with a 4 - 3 win. The Under-16 girls were also in action in the ESFA National Cup. Highfields hosted Kirk Hallam Community Academy and our girls played some excellent football. We were on top for a large portion of the game, however we couldn't find the net often enough and lost 1 – 3 - well done though! Our under 18 Boys travelled to The National Church of England Academy in the ESFA National Cup, where we went 2 goals up only to be pegged back in the second half. In the end we were beaten 3 - 1 on penalties – unlucky!

Newsletter Sports Leaders News PE Apprentice CPD On Friday 29 September Judy Richter came into school to deliver a First Aid course to the PE Apprentices from Highfields and Erewash. PE Apprentice, Miss Elliott, attended a Sports Leaders UK tutor training course in Derby on Tuesday 3 October and is now a qualified tutor along with Mr Molyneux, who qualified last year.
Voice of Sport Friday was also the first Voice of Sport meeting for this academic year. The group meet every month and have representation from every year group involved.
Highfields Cluster Primary Schools On Tuesday 3 October, Highfields Cluster primary schools Bronze Ambassadors spent the day being trained at Highfields. They have now entered the pathway of Young Ambassadors and join Highfields Silver, Gold and Platinum ambassadors in the Highfields cluster team. Students received training in the morning on what an ambassador does, followed by a practical basketball session from exEngland Basketball International, Andrew Bridge, in the afternoon.
Derbyshire Sport Derbyshire Sport were in school on Tuesday filming our young Level 2 Sports Leader, Alisha, in action at the Bronze Ambassador training event.

Newsletter Basketball On Wednesday 4 October, PE Apprentice, Mr Molyneux put the young pupils from Highfields through their paces at basketball along with our Year 11 Sports Leaders from Girls Active.
Primary School Cross Country Primary School Cross Country took place on Thursday 5 October on the Lumsdale field.
The winners are: Year 5 & 6 Girls – All Saints Year 5 & 6 Boys – Darley Dale Year 3 & 4 Girls – All Saints Year 3 & 4 Boys – All Saints Year 1 & 2 Reception Girls – South Darley Year 1 & 2 Reception Boys – Darley Dale The top 12 girls and boys from the Year 5 & 6 events will go forward to represent Highfields at the SSP Finals in November. Well done to everyone who entered and supported the event.
Youth Sport Trust Programme Exciting news - Highfields have been selected to run another Youth Sport Trust programme. Further details will follow from Mrs Allen after she has attended the National Hub Training in London.

School News World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan at Starkholmes Students at lower school took part in the Macmillan coffee morning on Friday 29 September. We have never had so many cakes delivered to school and Highfields are incredibly proud of the amazing contribution by parents/carers and students. Thank you everyone! A total amount of £321.00 was raised by Year 7 and 8 students and staff at Starkholmes - thank you to everyone for taking part in this very successful event.

Newsletter Highfields School’s Patron of Reading Lucy Adlington, author of The Red Ribbon, has accepted the invitation to be Patron of Reading for Highfields library. Lucy is an inspiration to students as she writes books that students are interested in and has local connections - the perfect combination! As Patron of Reading, Lucy will be working with us to help encourage and develop our reading for pleasure culture in school. Lucy is full of great ideas and so far we've discussed having book recommendations, question and answer sessions, top tips for writing stories, book covers we love and loathe, and insights into being an author. Staff and students are looking forward to the school building a positive relationship with Lucy over the next year. Library and IT staff are exploring the possibilities of a platform that's easy, safe and discoverable for students. We will initially be using the library's Twitter account @highfieldslib.
The Patron of Reading initiative reports that having an author as a patron creates extra interest in reading within schools. For more information visit www.patronofreading.co.uk and follow @patronofreading

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
