Fixtures:

Year 9 Boys Football - Tuesday 3 October 2017 The Year 9 Boys football team travel to Anthony Gell to play their league fixture – 4.15pm kick-off.

Sixth Form Football - Wednesday 4 October 2017 The Sixth Form football team are playing in the English School National Cup away at National Church of England Academy, Hucknall, with a 3.40pm kick-off.

The first team Rugby against Derby Grammar has been rearranged – further details to follow.

Results: Year 11 Football - Wednesday 27 September 2017 The Year 11 Football team played Ashfield in the second round of the English Schools National Cup on Wednesday night. The team played well, and were only one goal down at the break, but through injuries had to change the line-up and were defeated 5 - 0 in the end.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News PE Apprentices CPD PE Apprentices have had an excellent CPD session from County provider Dominic Limb on high quality PE delivery and the National curriculum. Our Apprentices were joined by the Apprentices from Erewash.

Combat Hub School Programme On Wednesday 27 September our Year 9 and 10 classes took place for wrestling and fencing and are progressing well as a part of our Combat Hub school programme.

Rugby Development Primary school staff and Highfields Sports Leaders took part in training on Wednesday by Rugby Development Officer, Sean Wright, in readiness for the primary school tag rugby season and tournaments. The Highfields Cluster Championship takes place on Friday 13 October.

South Darley Primary School Sports Session Wednesday also saw Sports Leaders, Girls Active Leaders and Apprentices deliver an excellent sports session for South Darley Primary School. The sport covered in the evening was table tennis.

Highfields Primary Schools Playmaker Conference On Thursday 28 September the Highfields Primary Schools Playmaker Conference was held. Year 5 and 6 students attended for a Sports Leaders UK Leadership Award. This marks the start of their leadership journey in our Sports Leadership Academy. All 44 students who attended have been trained and now return to their primary schools to complete the award over the year.

Newsletter Preparations are underway for Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Awards (extract from DSSA website)

The sporting successes of young people in Derbyshire, the hard work of volunteers, and work to help young people to engage in more active and healthy lives will all be recognised at the forthcoming Derbyshire Schools' Sports Awards.

Hundreds of young people and their families, teachers and those working within sports will attend the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association event at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield on Tuesday 17 October.

Individuals, teams and schools have been shortlisted for awards in 15 categories.

Awards for individual achievement include Sportsperson of the Year (inclusive), Primary School Sportsperson of the Year and Secondary School Sportsperson of the Year, all in School Sport, along with Non-School Sport Sportsperson of the Year.

Team awards are Primary Team, Secondary Team and inclusive Team, while volunteer categories include Young Leader / Ambassador – Primary School, Young Leader / Ambassador – Secondary School, Young Leader / Ambassador – Inclusive and the Adult Volunteer Award.

There are also a number of new categories. The #YoungActiveHealthy Award will recognise an outstanding contribution in helping young people in Derbyshire engage in more active and healthy lives, and the first Active Schools of the Year will also be named.

This year's recipient of the Services to School Sport Award in honour of Suzanne Meehan, the former Chair of DSSA who passed away in 2014, will also be revealed.

Karen Shopland and Janice Price, Co-Chairs of DSSA, said they were looking forward to recognising yet more sporting talent at the event as well as the work to encourage more young people to take part in physical activity and sport.

Karen said: "There are so many young people across Derbyshire who excel in physical activity and sport, and the awards are a great way of highlighting and rewarding these achievements as well as the work of dedicated volunteers who continue to play a crucial role in ensuring the success and smooth-running of school sport across Derbyshire.

"I'm also pleased that there will be a greater emphasis on recognising the work that goes on to help young people engage in more active and healthy lives."

This year's DSSA Sports Awards, organised by Derbyshire Sport, are again being supported by the University of Derby, as part of its partnership with Derbyshire Sport and the DSSA, which also sees it supporting the delivery of school sport competitions in the county.

The partnership is part of the University of Derby's ongoing support for sport in Derbyshire, and its work to create greater links with local schools and encourage more young people with an interest in sport to consider studying at the University.

Ollie Shearer, Head of Sport at the University of Derby, said: "We are delighted to be supporting the DSSA Sports Awards again and to be able to help recognise the sporting talent of young people in this way.

In addition, Highfields School is nominated for an Active Schools Award and Derbyshire Sport are coming in to school to film next week – more details to follow.

School News Year 7 Activity Days at Lea Green We would like to send out a huge thank you to all students and staff who took part in the very successful Year 7 activity days that took place on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 September.

The students completed a walk to or back from Lea Green Activity Centre and were given the opportunity to take part in activities ranging from low ropes and obstacle courses, through to team building and buggie riding. We were all treated to a lovely BBQ lunch, with the delights of ice creams, cakes and cookies for dessert. It was a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to get to know each other outside of the classroom environment.

We have also introduced our Year 7 students to the Highfields Heroes and will be further encouraging them in future lessons to earn rewards for responsible, resilient, resourceful, reflective and reasoning skills. The behaviour of students was exceptional and it was a pleasure to spend our time getting to know them.

Parent/Carer Notices Police Notice – Safety throughout evenings and weekends We wanted to alert parents/carers to information we have received from the Police this week.

The Police have reported to us that young people have been seen roaming the streets in the early hours of the morning recently, having informed parents/carers that they are staying at another friend’s house. Please can we advise that you check your child is where they say they are for their safety.

Punctuality at registration and lessons As a school we are committed to ensuring that each student gains the most from school through maximum possible attendance.

We would like to remind parents/carers that students are expected to be punctual and arrive for registration at 8.40am, ready to start the school day. Registration is from 8.40-9.00am and the official close of registration is 9.15am.

Being late for registration will be officially recorded in registers. If students arrive after 8.40am they will be marked as ‘late before registration has closed’. If students arrive after registration has closed, without a satisfactory reason, they will be marked as ‘late after registration’ and this will count as an unauthorised absence. High levels of unauthorised absence may lead to prosecution.

Staff register every lesson electronically to identify if any students are missing from lessons during the day, which enables Pastoral Managers to inform parents/carers immediately. Having registered at school, no student will be allowed to leave the premises without our permission. Any students leaving school for a pre-arranged appointment must ensure they sign out before leaving the school buildings.

Highfields PTFA Annual General Meeting – 11 October 2017 The Annual General Meeting of the Highfields Parents, Teachers & Friends Association (PTFA) will be held on 11 October 2017 at 6.30pm in the staff room at Starkholmes (lower school site) and afterwards at the pub for a drink! Come along with ideas and enthusiasm and a willingness to support the school community!

Year 11 Information Evening – 1 November 2017 We will be holding a Year 11 information evening for parents/carers on 1 November from 6.30pm in the Wheeldon Hall to give help, advice and guidance for students leading up to their GCSE exams.

Sixth Form Open Evening – 6 November 2017 Our Sixth Form Open Evening will be held from 6-8pm in the Wheeldon Hall – further information to follow.

Highfields Careers Convention – 9 November 2017 Our Careers Convention evening will take place on Thursday 9 November 2017 from 6-8pm in the Sports Hall at Lumsdale (upper school site). Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)

The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.

Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)

If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department.

Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
