Fixtures: Wednesday 27 September 2017 Year 11 boys football team are playing their first round of the ESFA National Cup away to Ashfield on Wednesday 27 September at 4pm.
Thursday 28 September 2017 Year 9 boys football team travel to Fernwood Academy in the ESFA National Cup – time to be confirmed (see Mr Shirtcliffe).
Results: Year 9 football results - 20 September 2017 Highfields Year 9 boys football team played away at Lady Manners on Wednesday. They took the lead early before Lady Manners scored prior to half time, meaning it was 1-1 at half time. In the second half Highfields scored two more goals beating Lady Manners 1-3. A brilliant game by a great footballing team - well done!
Year 9 - Highfields vs Lady Manners Match Report – Billy James (9JAD): Highfields Year 9 secured yet another comfortable win on Wednesday with a great performance against Lady Manners. Goals from Oliver Suett and Tom Woodall put them 2-1 up at the break. Billy James scored in the second half to make it 3, while simultaneously finishing off the game (see full report below). Year 9 have kicked off the season with two comfortable wins – let’s hope the winning streak continues. ‘Highfields grab yet another comfortable win one week after their Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School demolition’ It was looking like a promising game for Highfields; coming off the back of a brilliant 5-2 display against Queen Elizabeth’s, featuring a hat-trick from the prolific Ben Crooks (who was prized with extra chips for dinner in the canteen afterwards, according to Mr Redhead!). They were confident. However, there were mixed feelings when the team turned up to a wonky Lady Manners’ pitch. ‘How do we play through-balls?’ questioned a bemused Oli Newberry.

Newsletter In the end it didn’t matter. After a pass from Billy James to Oliver Suett, a spark of brilliance followed – a cunning nutmeg on the Lady Manners’ centre-back, Adam Heppenstall, opened up a space for Suett to take a well-placed shot in the bottom-left corner of the net. That put Highfields up 1-0 within the first minutes of the game. Unfortunately, this led to a lethargic segment of the game that was probably the only point where Lady Manners looked in control. Highfields made a few sloppy mistakes which eventually culminated in Manners’ only goal of the game. To be fair, their striker (Pharrell) finished the move well with a chip that any great front man would be proud of. After this goal, Highfields’ spell of somnambulance came to an abrupt end. Around five minutes after the Manners’ goal, Billy James took a long shot just outside the opposing penalty area after cutting in from his left-wing position. The ball curved towards the far bottom-right corner, forcing the keep to only parry the strike. This gave the on-the-ball Tom Woodall (both metaphorically and literally) an easy tap-in which he duly directed into the back of the net. The half-time whistle soon sounded after some Catalan-esque play on the wings and in midfield, confirming Highfields’ dominance. The second half saw exactly what we had seen towards the end of the first half – great play from Highfields, who were unlucky not to finish every chance, and the occasional Manners break through. A notable mention during the second half was Tyler Brookfield, who bridged the gap between attack and defence very effectively in his central-defensive midfield position. The last goal of the game was a jammy one. After a rogue bounce, the ball was only available for Billy James to slice into the air with half a hope of chipping the keeper. In the end it didn’t, but the keeper’s save forced the ball past his own goal line and gave a well-deserved third for Highfields, despite the luck involved. The game ended 3-1 with a confident Highfields kickstarting a winning streak. Everyone was good – the defence was solid, so was the midfield and the attack did what they do best! Overall, it was a great and deserved win we should all get extra chips - Mr Redhead! Team:

Year 10 - Highfields vs Lady Manners The Year 10 team were also in action at Lady Manners, they played some good football and took the lead, unfortunately the game ended 4-3 to Lady Manners - great work!
Match Report by James Wilmot (10CS): 21 September 2017 was a great day for our Year 10 students who took part in the football match against Lady Manners Grammar School. The first goal scored was outside the box from a free kick. Dec Gregory, our centre midfielder, creamed it into the top right corner for a Highfields’ lead against Lady Manners then struck back with a goal to make it 1-1. The second goal, again scored by Dec, came from a cheeky little chip over the keeper to make it 2-1 to Highfields. Then, yet again, another goal from Lady Manners made it 2-2. Dylan Key took a cracking corner to lead to a diving header from Dylan Alldred. The game could have gone either way. Unfortunately, Lady Manners scored twice more to make the end result which equals the final result - well done Highfields great effort! Manager:

Newsletter Mini Scoccer for Highfields Feeder Primary Schools The first Sports Leaders event saw a team of 30 leaders officiate at the Highfields primary schools Mini Soccer event at Cavendish Fields.
The feeder schools competed in the following primary school events:
‘Big School Event’ schools taking part were Darley Dale, All Saints and St Joseph’s - the winners were All Saints. ‘Small School Event’ competing schools were Tansley, Lea, Castle View, Winster and South Darley - the winners were Lea. ‘Girls’ event saw St Joseph’s, Darley Dale, South Darley and Lea compete – the winners were Darley Dale.
The winning schools go through to the SSP finals in October and will be representing Highfields. The teachers voted Harry Rudkin (Year 12) as referee of the tournament. Harry did a fantastic job as did the other Sports Leaders in attendance on a very wet day. Well done to all who took part!
SEND CPD PE Apprentice, Miss Spencer, and Mrs Allen attended a CPD event in New Mills looking at developments in SEND PE, leaving with ideas and knowledge of new resources being made available.

School News The Red Ribbon Tour Students at upper school site book club helped Mrs Brown at Highfields library to prepare for an author visit to school this week. The author, Lucy Adlington, visited Highfields as part of her Red Ribbon tour.

She talked to students about her life, how she became a writer and what motivates and inspires her. Lucy was an inspiration herself, encouraging the students to find their own talents and not give up on them. She brought along copies of her new book - The Red Ribbon: even before it was launched in London, it was available here at Highfields! This was partly due to Lucy’s fondness for Matlock – she grew up in Darley Dale until her family moved to Skegness when she The Red Ribbon is a teenage fiction story based on the true experiences of the dressmakers at Auschwitz. Lucy brought genuine 1940s props and talked to Year 9 about what it might feel like to pack up in circumstances where you were forced to leave home and what skills you might use to stay alive in extreme circumstances, like the dressmakers used their sewing skills. She also read passages from The Red Ribbon. The Red Ribbon is available for loan from the school library at both sites.

Highfields PTFA Annual General Meeting – 11 October 2017 The Annual General Meeting of the Highfields Parents, Teachers & Friends Association (PTFA) will be held on 11 October 2017 at 6.30pm in the staff room at Starkholmes (lower school site) and afterwards at the pub for a drink! Come along with ideas and enthusiasm and a willingness to support the school community!

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
