Newsletter Message from the headteacher You have indicated in your survey responses that you want more detail about how I and the staff team intend to improve your school further. I will therefore be writing to you sometime soon. It is a lengthy letter and anyone who finishes it wins a free biscuit (not really). This week we undertook the latest in a series of annual drills to protect the safety of staff and students. Obviously, we hold a number of fire drills throughout the year. We also, like many schools, practise our response to various scenarios which could, albeit improbably, present themselves. This week we practised our response in the event of an intruder entering school. Interestingly, given the fact that we prepared students carefully (especially those who we anticipated may be alarmed by such a drill) it was senior staff who admitted to being ‘slightly freaked out’. This is because the senior staff who were evaluating the drill suddenly found themselves wandering around totally deserted, darkened corridors where well trained students and staff, hidden from view, peered from behind locked doors. In my own year 9 English class we waited quietly for the ‘all clear’ to sound. Senior staff will, as always, evaluate the drills (we naturally do them on both sites) but early indications suggest that students and staff responded brilliantly to the guidance that we have been issued by the relevant authorities. Earlier in the week, in a maths lesson, students were using distance/time graphs to plot the progress of an invading army of aliens (I should point out that this was not another scenario based drill, it was just an excited way for year 8 to look at graphs: see image). Elsewhere, year 7 students were looking at Agbogbloshie in Ghana, ‘the most toxic place on earth’, to understand the destination of a lot of our western waste. A discussion had developed around your (their parents’ and carers’) habits around sustainability. One student proudly declared that his family had cut down on their meat eating. Another student said that on the plus side his dad kept a car boot full of ‘bags for life’ but that, on the downside, he often forgot to take them into the shop, a scenario which is all too familiar to me. And the award for ‘build you up and knock you down again’ this week goes to L, a female student in year 8. When a member of staff told her that I was heading for a milestone birthday she guessed earnestly that I was soon to be 40. I was quietly elated but when I turned away I clearly heard her say, “I was going to say 60 but I just felt sorry for him”.
Legally Blonde approaches its final performance in the run this weekend; kill for a ticket and I’ll see you on Saturday night if you are lucky enough to be in the audience!

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Reminder: Arrangements for the last day of term – Friday 19 July For the last day of term we are amending the timetable for the school day to allow school to close at 1.45pm for the start of the summer holiday. Bus companies have been informed and contract buses (G&J Holmes, Slacks and Andrews buses) will collect at 2.00pm. Unfortunately, the local service buses (Your Bus, Hulleys and Littles) are unable to amend their timetable to collect students at 2.00pm. Therefore, students who usually catch these service buses will need to make their own arrangements. Should these amended arrangements cause you childcare issues, please contact the school and we will look at providing supervision up until 3.30pm. Students will be based at their usual site and able to wear non-uniform on the day for a £1 contribution. Normal lessons will continue for periods 1 and 2 followed by form time activities. Burgers, sausage and chips will be served for lunch in the canteen and students can pay via the cashless catering system as normal. There will be an ice-cream stall at school on both sites during lunch and students will need to bring money with them if they wish to purchase these items (icecream prices start from £2.50).
Climate Change – Student Action We are advised that further national student action on climate change is planned for Friday 19 July, following the previous action in recent months. As a school we continue to work hard to find a balance between encouraging our students to care about the environment, to keep them safe and to ensure that learning in all its senses drives what we do. We have a major focus on developing our curriculum for the coming year. Climate change is an issue that is given serious consideration in a number of subjects. Our geography department, for example, are making climate change a key theme that runs through their curriculum, so that all students will have a deep, informed understanding of the issue by the time they complete year 9. We would like to mark the end of the year with all students on Friday 19 July. However, if as a family you decide that you do not want your child to attend school on that day so that they can attend a climate change protest you should provide parental permission in writing by Wednesday 17 July at the latest by informing your child’s pastoral manager, stating you give permission for your child/ren to miss school and include the activities they will be taking part in to draw attention to climate change:

All absences to attend a climate change protest will be recorded as unauthorised absences. Clearly, we would only expect parents/carers to grant this kind of permission if they had planned a visit to a protest or similar. In all other cases students should come into school and stay in school. Any student who leaves site during the school day without permission will be truanting and compromising their own safety. Newsletter Keeping Students Safe Mrs Rifkin
We had our second ‘Get In Stay In’ drill of the academic year on Thursday 11 July. For this drill students were in their lessons and had to get into a safe position in the classroom out of view and needed to remain silent. Students needed to follow staff instructions quickly and sensibly. We are aware the chance of ever needing this drill in our school is very small, our biggest threat to date at our Starkholmes site has been cows escaping from a local farm, but it is important that if we ever need to get everyone to a safe position quickly we can. Students are expected to raise their hands for silence and to follow teachers’ instructions without any fuss or delay. During the drills I am pleased to report students behaved sensibly and silence was quickly achieved across the school. We have of course learnt from the drills as staff and are making plans to improve our systems for the next drill in the new academic year. Staff have talked to students about the drills in assemblies and form time and for more vulnerable students in one to one sessions. Please can you reiterate the learning done in school at home and apply it to the wider world over the holidays? Talk about safety in airports, busy cities and hotels. If our students are in a situation where there is an emergency they know they need to go somewhere safe where there are adults. They need to keep quiet and follow the instruction of any adults in control such as the emergency services. In a situation where there is immediate danger they must run, tell and hide, or as we say in school “Get In. Stay In”.

Or do you know a parent / carer with a child in school who would be great in this role? If so, please encourage them to put their name forward in September when details will be issued. Newsletter School news Year 7 and 8 Additional Literacy - Chick Project Mrs Finney
Over the last three weeks year 7 and year 8 groups have been involved in hatching three different breeds of chicken. They researched the development of the embryo, learned about the environmental factors required for the chicks to thrive such as temperature, humidity and movement; produced some creative writing and also began to fully appreciate the structure of the humble egg. The chicks were kept in an incubator and on day 12, they were carefully removed to a dark room where they were candled. This is a process where a light is placed under the egg and the students could see if their egg was fertile and contained a growing chick. It was at this stage that the air cell was clearly visible. Whilst waiting for chick day, the year 8's worked on a presentation to be given to a year 7 science class. Ten chicks hatched and the students were lucky enough to witness the hatching of the final one. As he pecked with his egg tooth, the students decided they should sing, Freddie Mercury’s "I
want to break free!"
When successfully hatched, the chick, of course had to be called Freddie! The students took charge of the after care and built an indoor chicken run ensuring that the chicks had plenty of space, a private area where they could not be disturbed, regular fresh bedding and plenty of food and water. The project culminated in a presentation to 7BW during their science lesson where each table had a fresh egg to crack open and the year 8's explained the scientific facts about the structure of the egg, showed them how the incubator worked and, to great excitement, introduced the new chicks to the appreciative audience. All in all, it was a very ‘eggsciting’, ‘eggshilarating’ and ‘eggstraordinary’ project!
Debating Competition Winners Mr Platts
On Thursday evening two teams of year 8 and year 12 students attended Lady Manners School to compete in the debating competition. The year 8 team was made of Alice, India, Jimi and Ruby they came first, with India winning ‘best speaker’. The year 12 team was made up of Emily, Vicky, Lizzy and Rhiana. The year 12s came a very controversial second with Emily being robbed as best speaker. There were great induvial performances from every member of each team who had to perform during a thunderstorm. Congratulations to all students taking part on their amazing effort.

Newsletter Design, Technology & Engineering Department Miss Morris
At the end of another busy year in the department, having delivered the full two years of our new exam board specifications, we would like to share and celebrate some of the work of our students from our A Level Product Design, Level 3 Foundation Technical Level Engineering, GCSE Design and Technology, GCSE Food, Preparation & Nutrition & Level 1/2 Engineering courses. Our students never fail to amaze us with their creative, inspiring and skilful interpretations of design briefs which this year included solving problems in developing countries, multi-functional products, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and designing for disability. Students have made the most of access to our suite of CAD/CAM machinery which gives them the opportunity to experience new technologies, increasingly being used in the modern workplace. We are currently working towards creating a dedicated space that will house the laser cutter, CNC milling machine and our 3D printer to further inspire and develop skills in this increasingly important aspect of our teaching and learning. In our engineering courses at Key stage 4 and 5, we have seen students achieve a very high standard in the units undertaken and the numbers for our Level 3 Foundation Technical Level course has doubled in number for 2019-20. Many students intend to pursue a career in engineering and have had the opportunity to have work experience placements in a wide range of engineering fields, giving them a greater understanding of how skills learned in school translate into the world of work. For those students who like to mix it up a little, the new GCSE Design and Technology course offers students the opportunity to combine their designing skills with manufacturing products using a range of materials. Students can continue on to our successful A Level Product Design course and this year has been no exception – the quality and level of skill they go on to develop and demonstrate can be seen in the photos below. Food lessons continue to be extremely popular, the smells emanating from the food rooms on both sites causes many a stomach to rumble if you are the vicinity! The GCSE Food, Preparation and Nutrition course is very popular and over-subscribed as has been the newly set up cookery club where students in year 7 and 8 continue to explore various aspects of food in a more relaxed setting and produce some absolutely outstanding products. Pictures from the students work from KS3, GCSE and cookery club below clearly show the dedication, thought and creativity which students have for food.

Newsletter In addition, we continue to develop our Key stage 3 projects in line with the new material covered in our specifications, preparing them to take on the demands of our GCSE’s should they choose to continue at Key stage 4. The year 8 technology club is very popular and this year we started by preparing the groundwork to design and build hydraulic robots that have now competed in combat with one another. As always, the year culminated with the trip to Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham where students saw demonstrations of the latest technologies found in industry today. We are proud of the quality of the products that our younger students make and always encourage them to take them home. In the past we have asked for a cash contribution towards payment of materials once product design and electronic projects are completed. As the school now has a cashless system, we would like to move towards this method of payment, so from September we would gratefully request that a contribution of £5.00 per year be made via the ParentPay system which would enable us to continue to deliver quality projects. Also available via Parent Pay, are the GCSE Design and Technology and GCSE Food, Preparation and Nutrition Revision Guides at a cost of £3.99 for students joining us in Year 10.

Primary Schools Combat Sports Day 2019 On Monday 8 July we held the primary schools combat sports day at the Arc. Coaches for this event were Trevor Hoskins from British Wrestling, Andy Parton from British Judo, Paul from Snap Dragons for Self Defence and Sally Peat from British Fencing. The coaches were supported by an excellent team of sports leaders from years 8, 9and 10 as well as our PE apprentices. There were 73 participants from Castle View, Elton, Winster, South Darley, All Saints and St Giles primary schools.
This annual event is all a part of our delivery of combat sports as Highfields is a Youth Sport Trust Combat Hub School. The coaches selected a number of students for award trophies and our sports leaders awarded ‘Spirit of the Games’ awards for the School Games Values.

Newsletter Annual APFE Conference Also on Monday Mrs Allen attended the annual APFE conference at St Georges Park, Burton – ‘dotting the I’s’ – Intent, Impact and Implementation, a notable conference around the Ofsted framework for PE.
Annual Derbyshire School Games The annual Derbyshire School Games took place on Tuesday 9 July at Mount St Mary’s in Spinkhill. The 12 sports leaders from years 7, 8, 9 and 12 were fantastic - they ran sessions of multi skills for nine schools in the day and a team completed all the scoring for the year 5 and 6 mini red tennis tournament. The tennis was won by Melbourne Primary School.

Newsletter Girls FA Youth Award Project The Girls’ FA Youth Award project came to a conclusion for 2018-19 on Wednesday 10 July with the girls taking a Junior Football Organiser award, delivered by FA coach, Gary Webb – all 17 students had a brilliant day of coaching from Gary.
Sports Leaders UK Quality Assurance Visit John Heathcote from Sports Leaders UK undertook an annual quality assurance visit on Wednesday 10 July. All courses have been successfully completed.
Beyond the Baseline Tennis Project The final session of Beyond the Baseline tennis project took place on Thursday 11 July with GB player/coach, Jade Windley.

Newsletter Youth Sport Trust Youth Sport Trust researcher, Jon Batterham, visited Highfields and our partner school, All Saints, on Thursday to talk to our year 9 sports leaders, staff and students participating from the primary school.
Secondary School Combat Day 2019 The secondary school combat day 2019 took place at the Arc today, Friday 12 July – details to follow in next week’s newsletter.
Sports Fixtures Mr Shirtcliffe Head of PE
Annual House Sports Day On Wednesday 26 June we hosted our annual sports day at Lumsdale. The day, which was due to be dry, was wet and overcast, but in true Highfields fashion we carried on, adapting the activities to suit the facilities we had available. We changed the athletics to sports hall athletics which led to an electric atmosphere - all students were cheered on especially those who were finishing last. Combat ball was a main feature of the day and the students definitely demonstrated their competitive side throughout the competitions. Each student was kept on their toes when they weren't taking part in an event by doing Zumba, Yoga and Tai Bo in the Wheeldon Hall and P1. The use of Kurling, Boccia and Swing ball proved very popular amongst the students. All in all, it was an excellent sports day which was only successful because of our hardworking and dedicated staff team and the resilience and talent of our students. The overall winners for sports day 2019 were Terra – well done!

Newsletter Dales Athletics Championships On Friday 28 June Highfields competed in the Dales Athletics Championships at Moorways in Derby. The weather held out this time and we had a lovely sunny day - perfect for athletics. All students involved went with a focussed and positive attitude and it certainly showed during the competitions. We boasted many victories throughout the event which was amazing to see - each student gave their all and represented Highfields extremely well. We achieved 2nd place in the year 7 competition, only 2 points behind the victors and 3rd in the year 8 competition - again only a few points behind. A massive thank you to all staff and students involved in all activities that took place last week, especially as it was National School Sports week.
County Rounders Tournament Our year 8 rounders team took part in the County Rounders Tournament on Tuesday 2 July and on 4 July the year 7 team played. Both teams have been practicing and working hard on strategy which showed during the performances from both year groups. Again, the girls represented Highfields extremely well – the year 8 team finished 4th, but they had an excellent win against Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School and our year 7 team finished 2nd - a massive well done to each and every student!

Newsletter Cyclocross The Highfields year 7 and 8 cyclocross team competed in the Derbyshire School Games at Mount St Mary’s on Tuesday 9 July. They competed well and it was clear that they were well drilled. Students took part in the cyclocross boys, cyclocross girls, cyclocross relay and the Italian pursuit. I am pleased to say they won them all and are now Derbyshire Cyclocross Champions! Well done to Ben, Sam, Sophie, Eleanor, Charlie and Freya - a special thank you also to the parents/carers who have supported throughout.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Newsletter Highfields School Uniform Code A strict uniform code for years 7 to 11 is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code. The uniform code below is designed to be clear. Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure.

A single sleeper/stud in each ear and a watch
No rings, pendants, necklaces, non-school badges, festival wrist bands, ordinary wrist bands, charity wrist bands (unless sanctioned by school), facial jewellery or other body jewellery (eg nose studs, belly button piercings), tattoos (tattoos are not legally allowed until 18 years of age)
Warm weather resistant winter coat suitable for outdoor use
No leather jackets, denim jackets, hoodies (including plain black hoodies) or plain black cardigans. These items are not waterproof and will not be accepted as outdoor wear. School jumpers should be worn for warmth
Outdoor wear must be removed upon entry to the school building and stored in lockers Outdoor wear must not be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Hairstyles:
Hair should be of natural colour and not extreme in terms of style or cut Plain hair bands can be worn - no flowers or bows
Belts:
Plain black belts (without studs) can be worn to hold up trousers and not for decoration
Scarves:
Scarves should never be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Make-up:
Heavy make-up is not acceptable in school (no mascara, blusher, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick or fake tan) No nail varnish, false nails or nail extensions are allowed Students will be issued with appropriate ‘wipes’ in order to remove heavy make-up or nail varnish
Bags:
Bags should be of a suitable size to accommodate A4 sized books, folders and other equipment
Equipment:
All students are expected to have pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and any subject specific equipment every day
Please note: Many department stores also stock the items we list as non-logo wear. Please be cautious when purchasing uniform from retailers, as many advertise and sell fashion trousers/skirts as school uniform, but not all would comply with Highfields uniform code. If you require advice before making a purchase, please contact school. Where a term is disputed (e.g. ‘skinny’ or ‘short’) a senior leader will decide whether or not clothing reflects uniform code. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.
