Newsletter Message from the headteacher Some readers of this ‘bit’ in the newsletter might have noticed that I spend quite a lot of time dropping into food lessons. The reason is that when I am on the way to other lessons on upper site I have to walk past the window of the food room, from which enticing smells normally emanate. Add to this the fact that our current food teacher is an ex-student of mine who, I think, feels some kind of misguided responsibility to provide me with sustenance, and you end up with a recipe for weight gain. Last week I convinced a student to pass me a small fish cake through the window (he said it was a ‘test piece’ but it was totally delicious). This week when I passed I got a whiff of deep fried batter and crept in to find ‘international food day’ in full swing. The year 9 cooks were whipping up delights from across the globe. I could talk about any one of the dishes because they were all totally delicious, but the proverbial biscuit was taken by a student whose churros, soft in the middle, crispy on the outside, coated in cinnamon and icing sugar were completely awe inspiring. She explained that the skill is in the timing. I love listening to students who delight in what they are doing. Elsewhere A level biologists were assembling their apparatus (very dull picture below) and preparing to go out sampling the growth patterns of daisies on our site. I always ask students why they are learning what they are learning. In this case they explained that understanding growth patterns on a local scale can help to understand growth patterns on a wider scale. I met a geography student earlier in the day whose A level coursework was looking at how human activity affects the growth of plant life on sand dunes. I’m banking on some of this Highfields talent being put to good use in understanding how human activity is affecting plant growth on a more global scale, and then doing something about it. On that note I passed a few minutes in a year 9 ‘learning to learn’ lesson where students were delivering a presentation designed by a year 8 student on the theme of climate change. This was very powerful, but I am very keen that students understand that a topic doesn’t have to entitled ‘climate change’ for it to be about climate change. Topics from subjects including science, economics, business, sociology and geography also explore the key concepts (power, energy, consumption, politics, business, population) involved in anthropogenic climate change. On Wednesday we had year 8 at upper site, year 6 at lower site and year 7 walking up local hills. I welcomed back the walkers on their return and spent some time convincing one quite flustered student that, given they had ended up where they had started, it really was unlikely that the ‘whole thing was uphill’. In the end I didn’t have the heart to push the point home and just left him to grumble away in the shade. Your children can be brilliantly entertaining and interesting. Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Arrangements for the last day of term – Friday 19 July For the last day of term we are amending the timetable for the school day to allow school to close at 1.45pm for the start of the summer holiday. Bus companies have been informed and contract buses (G&J Holmes, Slacks and Andrews buses) will collect at 2.00pm. Unfortunately, the local service buses (Your Bus, Hulleys and Littles) are unable to amend their timetable to collect students at 2.00pm. Therefore, students who usually catch these service buses will need to make their own arrangements. Should these amended arrangements cause you childcare issues, please contact the school and we will look at providing supervision up until 3.30pm. Students will be based at their usual site and able to wear non-uniform for the day for a £1 contribution. Normal lessons will continue for periods 1 and 2 followed by form time activities. Burgers, sausage and chips will be served for lunch in the canteen and students can pay via the cashless catering system as normal. Students who have free school meals must inform either Mrs Green (Starkholmes) or Mr Tidmarsh (Lumsdale) by Friday 12 July if they would like a sandwich lunch to be provided. There will be an ice-cream stall at school on both sites during lunch and students will need to bring money with them if they wish to purchase these items.
Year 8 transition to Lumsdale Parents/carers of students in year 8 have been emailed an electronic copy of the parent/carer guide containing the information you will need to know for September. Students have been issued with their own booklet during their visit on Wednesday. If parents/carers have any questions following the transition visit, please contact Mrs Ruston.

PE and School Sport Apprentice Update Jill Eaton, Chief Executive Officer of Sporting Futures, visited Highfields on 28 June to see the Highfields team for verification of folder work; taking video footage of our four apprentices advocating the benefits of the programme, and a general round up of our involvement in the programme for 2018/19.
The final lesson observation took place for Mr Molyneux at Monyash Primary School on Thursday 4 July.
School Sports Partnership Kwik Cricket Finals The SSP kwik cricket finals took place on Monday 1 July at Darley Dale Cricket Club. Event winners were Osmaston and runners up were All Saints from our primary cluster. Officials at the event were Harry (year 13) and Ben (year 12) who did a brilliant job as ever!

Newsletter Sports Leaders UK Leader of the Year nominations We would like to give a special mention to Harry (year 13) who has just reached the last six learners for the National title of Sports Leaders UK Leader of the Year – we wish him well in anticipation of the decision to be announced.
Wimbledon 2019 On Tuesday 2 July Mrs Wildgoose and Mrs Turner and staff took students from years 11-13 to Number 1 Court and the outside courts at Wimbledon where the sun shone for the day! They saw the women’s no 1 Barty who won, GB Joanna Konta who won and no 3 seed Raffa who also won, plus all the action on the outside courts.
Sports Club The final intervention sports club took place at All Saints Primary School on Wednesday 3 July led by Mr Molyneux and year 9 health champions Libby and Emily.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Newsletter Highfields School Uniform Code A strict uniform code for years 7 to 11 is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code. The uniform code below is designed to be clear. Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure.

A single sleeper/stud in each ear and a watch
No rings, pendants, necklaces, non-school badges, festival wrist bands, ordinary wrist bands, charity wrist bands (unless sanctioned by school), facial jewellery or other body jewellery (eg nose studs, belly button piercings), tattoos (tattoos are not legally allowed until 18 years of age)
Warm weather resistant winter coat suitable for outdoor use
No leather jackets, denim jackets, hoodies (including plain black hoodies) or plain black cardigans. These items are not waterproof and will not be accepted as outdoor wear. School jumpers should be worn for warmth
Outdoor wear must be removed upon entry to the school building and stored in lockers Outdoor wear must not be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Hairstyles:

Make-up:
Heavy make-up is not acceptable in school (no mascara, blusher, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick or fake tan) No nail varnish, false nails or nail extensions are allowed Students will be issued with appropriate ‘wipes’ in order to remove heavy make-up or nail varnish
Bags:
Bags should be of a suitable size to accommodate A4 sized books, folders and other equipment
Equipment:
All students are expected to have pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and any subject specific equipment every day
Please note: Many department stores also stock the items we list as non-logo wear. Please be cautious when purchasing uniform from retailers, as many advertise and sell fashion trousers/skirts as school uniform, but not all would comply with Highfields uniform code. If you require advice before making a purchase, please contact school. Where a term is disputed (e.g. ‘skinny’ or ‘short’) a senior leader will decide whether or not clothing reflects uniform code. Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
