Newsletter Co-Headteachers’ message The end of another busy and exciting year has arrived. We’ve all enjoyed celebrating our successes and marking the start of summer with the now ‘traditional’ Challenge Day. This year we all had a fabulous day aboard the HMS Highfields. We would like to thank you very much indeed for all your support over the year. We have very much enjoyed our two years as Co-Headteachers and are proud of the many, varied achievements of our students and staff. We wish you and your families a very pleasant summer and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in September. All the best Ben Riggott and Peter Cole

Exam results Students who have taken exams will be able to collect their results on the following days from the Wheeldon Hall:
Thursday 16 August (A level) - A2 exam results are available for collection from 8.30am and AS results will be available from 10.30am until 12noon.
Thursday 23 August (GCSE) – Year 11 GCSE exam results are available for collection from 8.30am until 12noon.

Information for new Year 10 GCSE Design & Technology and GCSE Food, Preparation & Nutrition students in September 2018 The following two Collins GCSE revision and practice books are now available for our new GCSE courses: Collins GCSE AQA Design and Technology All-in-one Revision and Practice Collins GCSE Eduqas Food Preparation and Nutrition All-in-one Revision and Practice We believe they are well-written and a valuable resource. The books give students a range of methods of revising topics and practicing exam technique and questions. The books will be used regularly to support both class and homework. We strongly recommend the purchase of the relevant titles for your child at the discounted cost of £3.99 each, payable through the school Parent Pay system. Students studying both subjects can order both copies. The books will be distributed in September at the start of their course, through the department and the relevant class teacher. School meal increase Derbyshire County Council have advised us that as from 3 September 2018 the price of a secondary school meal has been increased to £2.40, please ensure your child has sufficient funds on their account to cover this for the start of September.

Newsletter School News Footloose Highfields School Drama and Music departments are incredibly proud of the recent sell-out production of Footloose. With over 100 students involved from Years 713, as well as staff members, the performances were a tremendous success - concluding with a standing ovation and a VIP guest on Saturday night. In this fun-loving musical, city boy Ren (played by Year 9 student Jamie) thinks his life is over when he is forced to move to Bomont, an American rural backwater. Things are far worse than he could have ever imagined, as the town has banned dancing. It isn't long before Ren can't resist breaking the rules, and he's not alone. He finds friends such as Willard and Rusty (played by Year 12's Jack and Emily) and romance with Ariel (played by Daisy from Year 10) along his journey to change the law and the opinions of Rev. Shaw (played by Year 12 Charlie) and the rest of the townspeople. The show was directed by Head of Drama and Theatre Miss Bonsall who was incredibly impressed by the students' commitment to the performance and their dedicated focus throughout. Head of Music, Kris Rowley, ensured the musical performances were to an exceptionally high standard. The band, which consisted of woodwind, brass, bass guitar, keyboards and drums and percussion was made up of students and staff members of the music department. Both Miss Bonsall and Mr Rowley auditioned the students in February and since then the students have rehearsed three nights and three lunchtimes a week, as well as a full weekend just before the performance - fitting around the World Cup schedule, of course! Props and scenery were brilliantly created with help from the Art department and site staff. Backstage was run by Year 9 and 10 drama GCSE students and Year 11 students Charlie and Eve were responsible for lighting. Elli, in Year 11, took care of the show's photography. Director Miss Bonsall choreographed most of the dances and was assisted by Year 12 students Molly and Ben as the shows Dance Captains for this year. The almost 80-strong chorus and ensemble sang and danced to a very high standard and gave all their energy to every performance. Every single member was accurate and completely in character throughout. The lead roles managed to really convey a variety of

Newsletter ages and backgrounds of the characters despite the fact that they are all secondary students. Only one staff member was a member of the cast, and that was Mr Redhead, Head of Year 9, as 'Cop' - a running tradition at Highfields. An audience member praised "the hugely inclusive cast" and that "every child had a chance to shine, rotating who was seen on stage throughout". Generous support from the local community was gratefully received, such as stage set from JEC Scaffolding Ltd and advertising signage firm MVIS, with 25 different local firms donating raffle prizes. Miss Bonsall said, "I am tremendously proud of the commitment and talent that our students have shown. We have given six public performances and each one has astounded me with their level of musical and theatrical quality. The performances represent a huge amount of hard work and dedication from everyone involved and I am very excited that we have produced such an impressive level of quality in every aspect of the production - from the acting, singing and dancing to musical accompaniment, backstage and lighting and sound. This was my second full production at Highfields and although an incredibly ambitious show with a huge cast, we feel we pulled it off! After Little Shop of Horrors last year, and Footloose this year, I am already looking forward to producing next year's musical." On Saturday night our VIP guest was James Lomas, a West End and Olivier award winning actor, who visited Highfields to inspire students across all three key stages with a tremendous workshop recently. James Lomas is an actor and professional performer who has worked in the West End in many shows for thirteen years. He became the youngest actor to receive a ‘Laurence Olivier Award’ for Best Actor for his role as the original 'Billy' in Billy Elliot the Musical. James said "Wow. What an outstanding performance! I am so glad I came back to see this after Miss Bonsall and the students of the workshop invited me. The standard of the talent at Highfields is just incredible! A big hats off to Miss Bonsall and her team for such great work." What great praise from a professional! Similarly, Mr Marsh (our headteacher from September) and once specialist of Musical Theatre at the BRIT school, gave fantastic feedback. "Such a well-rehearsed, well trained cast, a really excellent band and a fabulous back line crew. I was really engrossed throughout and totally invested in the clash between jaded, traumatised elders and kids who were desperate to express themselves. The work of the actors was developed and supported from the really precise playing from the band and MD (great cues) and lighting, set design, stage management, make up etc. Miss Bonsall, Mr Rowley and the cast have really pushed the limits of what is possible in a school performance." Newsletter Book Club book-themed bake-off Following on from last year’s award-winning book-themed bake-off which The Reading Agency chose as one of their case studies, book club students from both sites once again took over the food technology room to take part in the 2018 book-themed bake-off. The judges included staff, students and our Patron of Reading, Lucy Adlington. All judges were unanimous that tasting the cakes was the easy bit and deciding the winner was so very, very hard. The standard of baking and the level of creativity in linking the cakes to books were amazing. The teams were judged on their team work, how tasty the cake was, how well it linked to a book and also it’s wow factor! There were only a few points between all eight teams, because they were all so fabulous. These are the eight cakes - which one would you choose? The Logical Muggles were inspired by the Harry Potter series. This cake is a wizard’s chessboard which has become old and overgrown. It’s now lost its enchantment symbolising all things change, which echoes JK Rowling’s latest story in the series ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.’
The No Team made these popcakes which are a cross between a cake and a lollypop. They based them on the Oi series of books, for young children. These are beautifully decorated as frogs from the book Oi Frog!
The Hunger Games Team baked a cake linked to The Hunger Games series, with a quote from the book iced on. The coloured icing represents the flames of Catching Fire and the musical notes are the mockingjay’s whistle which becomes a symbol of defiance in the story. The flowers represent those laid down by Catniss for Rue.

Newsletter Team Pinky and Perky baked a cake inspired by the Divergent series. It’s chocolate because the Dauntless faction welcome their new members with a chocolate cake. The flames made from toffee caramel have been added to represent fire – the symbol of Dauntless.
Team MB (is this really Mary Berry?!) This chocolate brownie is a celebration of all books everywhere.
Team Buttercream made a cake inspired by the Noughts and Crosses series. This cake has a game of noughts and crosses iced on the top with crosses clearly winning. Inside the cake is mixed colours to represent different races with the red icing representing the blood spilled in the conflict for racial equality.
The Happy Crew baked a cake inspired by Mr Happy from the Mr Men series. Their cake is a lemon sponge cake and is served with lemon tea to represent a very British series.
Team Hufflepuff were inspired by the Puking Pastille sweets in the Harry Potter series to make a Puking Pastille cake. They have iced the Harry Potter symbol onto their cake and served it up with butter beer also from the Harry Potter series. And the overall winner is (drumroll… please …)

Newsletter Team Buttercream with their Noughts and Crosses inspired cake - congratulations team Buttercream and well done to everyone who took part for their inspiring, fun and creative book bakes. Lucy Adlington commended “Noughts and Crosses for their concept of turning the book's themes into cake form. I also loved the chess game gone magically rogue. In fact, all of them were so imaginative. Reading Challenge Results and the winners are… Lower school students have been taking part in a year-long reading challenge which aims to enhance their enjoyment of reading and helps them to discover new books and authors. Since September, students in Years 7 and 8 have read an amazing 3,260 books! Students in the two classes (one in Year 7 and one in Year 8) that had read the most books by the end of this summer term were rewarded with cakes, soft drinks and games in an afternoon tea party in the Library. 7JCK are winners of the Year 7 Reading Challenge and “The Team”, lead by Miss Whyatt have won the Year 8 Reading Challenge. We are very grateful to William Twigg (Matlock) Ltd for their support of this year’s reading challenge. The winning Year 8 team was awarded with the “Twigg’s Trophy” by Mr David Allen, Director of Twigg’s, in assembly earlier this week. Mr Allen talked to the students about the importance of good literacy skills for any young person entering today’s job market. “Twigg’s support of the reading challenge this year has been fantastic. Competing for a trophy made the contest much more exciting for the students, and thanks to funding from Twigg’s we’ve been able to stock the library with some fantastic new books that have been extremely popular. National headlines might suggest that young people don’t read books for pleasure, but at Highfields this is absolutely not the case!” said Lower School Librarian, Mrs Robinson. A recent survey of 15-year-olds found that the difference in reading skills of those who read for 30 minutes a day, compared to those who said they never read for enjoyment, is the equivalent to just over a year’s schooling. So even just a few minutes’ reading every day can make a huge difference!

Sports Leaders UK Quality Assurance visit On Tuesday 17 July Sports Leaders UK quality assurance team visited Highfields to verify our courses for 2017/18. We are awaiting their final report which will then release our certificates that will be presented at our annual Sports Leaders Award evening in 2019.

Last week’s maths quiz answer … Last week, Tom and Sophie bought some stamps for their collections. Each stamp Tom bought cost him £1.10, whilst Sophie paid 70p for each of her stamps. Between them they spent exactly £10. How many stamps did they buy in total?
Solution: If Tom bought 1 stamp and Sophie bought 2 stamps they would spend £2.50. They need to spend 4 times as much, so Tom bought 4 stamps, and Sophie bought 8.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
