Newsletter Message from the headteacher Wow. What a week. On Tuesday the senior team were the first leadership group in the school to have their planning day at Designate in Matlock. We choose this venue because it was within walking distance from school and it is a locally owned company (in fact they are Highfields parents) so these criteria reflect our broad ethical outlook. These planning days are not worth it unless they are difficult. The focus of the days is ‘locking in success’. We want to adapt daily routines and structures to drive forward our draft Big 3 priorities. This means that we have to plan almost every one of our 195 school days next year ensuring that leaders’ plans do not conflict with each other. We aim to leave nothing to chance. Thursday saw heads of department squeeze into the same venue to understand the strategic direction established by the senior team and to unpack the training and activities this might require for/from their team members. And on Friday heads of year met to examine how the tutor and inclusion teams might need to adapt practices to achieve our strategic aims. Early next week pastoral and inclusion managers will meet to understand how their work will underpin all of the above. The fact that we have done this when years 10, 11 and 13 are not in school has limited the cover required. We feel that it is crucial to give leaders a little time and space to think and plan together. Soon heads of year will write to families to explain how you might experience, from a home perspective, the changes we are making. My involvement in this training, along with my whole hearted involvement in sports day on Wednesday (brilliant by the way) has meant that I have been into only two lessons, both of which were good (science). From my office I can hear rehearsals for Legally Blonde. My daughter and I are preparing for this (we are coming together to see the Saturday night performance which coincides with her birthday) by watching the video together on YouTube. OMG, we so can’t wait. (In joke). After I reported the loss of Woody in last week’s newsletter there have been enquiries as to the wellbeing of his woodlouse friends. I have checked (see photo) and they look like they are coping pretty well, all things considered. Finally … in the midst of all that has gone on this week I wanted to sample one or two of the work experience placements which we send our Y10 students on. My very wise PA suggested that this might be a job too far this week but I carried on regardless. When I had a spare 20 seconds I rang one of the placements to see if the student had reported safely for work and was settling in. Rather impatiently I asked to be put through to the work contact listed on my sheet: a Mr Basil Close. Anyway, long story short it turns out that Basic Close is the company address, not an employee. Newsletter School news Year 10 work experience Mrs Turner
Work experience day The year 10 work experience day on 21 June was a great success. The students were involved in a variety of activities including a CV workshop using the careers programme START which will be continued into year 11 in preparation for their mock interview day. Students took part in interactive workshops where they had to interview a number of local employers to give them a greater understanding of the local businesses in the area, and received information on the Apprenticeship pathway and university routes. Finally, we ensured our students were fully prepared for their work experience visits with the workshops on work experience expectations and health and safety. We appreciate the support we were given from all the providers on the day. Work experience week Students in year 10 have now completed their first week of work experience visits and are looking forward to taking up week two next week. Staff have been visiting placements to see students experiencing a typical working week in their chosen field. Feedback from employers has been positive with students engaging in the work they are doing. Thank you to the companies involved in supporting our students this week.
UKMT National Junior Maths Challenge Success Miss Hall
We are extremely proud to have several students enter the UKMT National Junior Maths Challenge across years 7 and 8. Max and Harley in year 7 scored highly enough to enter the UKMT National Junior Kangaroo Challenge and India in year 8’s score automatically qualified her for the UKMT National Olympiad Challenge and has received a Certificate of Merit for her achievement. Students who entered were: Year 7: Hannah, Sam, William, Ella, Max, Alex, Beatrice, Olivia and Harley. Year 8: Louisa, India, Lola, Fin, Nathan, Oliver, Shannon, Patrick, Charlie, Ted, Lauren, Ellis, Reuben, Ben, Tilda, Georgina, Angus, Johnny, Callum and Daniel. Congratulations to all students who entered the prestigious competitions!

Peak FM’s Homegrown Talent Award Winners Peak FM held their annual Awards Ceremony on Thursday evening where brother and sister act, Charlie and Imogen, from Highfields School were invited to attend. People across North Derbyshire were asked to nominate anyone across any age group or talent who they felt deserved the Homegrown Talent award and send videos of them performing. A judging panel selected the winner which was announce last night. Brother and sister act, Charlie and Imogen, who also performed recently on The Voice Kids, scooped the Homegrown Talent Award. They were asked to perform as part of the evening’s celebrations and were a huge success. We are all very proud of them both – well done!

Key Stage 2 rounders tournament On Friday 21 June we held the KS2 rounders tournament – what a fantastic sunny day! The teams taking part were from All Saints, Wessington, Lea, Darley Dale, St Joseph’s and South Darley Primary Schools with students involved from years 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 in matches. The games were of ten minute innings each side running on a round robin basis.
Our Highfields leaders who had been trained by England rounders player, Helen Hawes, received many compliments on their officiating by staff attending the day. They couldn't believe the leaders were only in years 7 & 8. Results – Years 3 & 4 1st: Darley Dale 2nd: Wessington 3rd: Lea th 4 : Winster 5th: South Darley

Newsletter National School Sport Week: 24-28 June Monday 24 June: Tennis Beyond the Baseline Project GB Tennis player, Jade Windley, came into school for session 2 training for the Beyond the Baseline Project. The young tennis leaders were putting a plan together for the practical delivery session for session 3 leading All Saints Junior School class 3.
SSP Kwik Cricket Finals The finals for the girls’ SSP Kwik cricket where held at Darley Dale Cricket Club on Monday – schools attending from Highfields Cluster were All Saints and Darley Dale.
Work Experience – Women in Sport Headquarters, London Hettie, in year 10, began her work experience placement at the Women in Sport Headquarters, London under the watchful eye of Florence Lloyd Hughes
Tuesday 25 June and Thursday 27 June: KS1 Dance Festival Days 2019 On Tuesday and Thursday Highfields held the two KS1 dance festival days for 2019. Our year 9 dance leaders have been in training to lead these events for a term to achieve their Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Dance Award. Lea, Darley Dale, Elton, All Saints and Wessington Primaries took part in Tuesday’s festival and South Darley, Winster, Castle View, All Saints and St Giles attended Thursday’s festival.

Mrs Allen had the privilege of verifying the award and commented “the students have worked so hard and were very inspirational�.

Newsletter Health Ambassadors Intervention Project Session 3 of the Health Ambassadors Intervention Project at All Saints Primary School took place on Wednesday with the year 9 leaders supported by Mr Molyneux.
Friday 28 June: Sporting Futures Verification Chief Executive Officer, Jill Eaton, of Sporting Futures visited Highfields to undertake the final verifications for the level 3 PE and School Sport qualification for PE apprentices Mr Hill, Miss Tabbenor and Mr Edenbrow. Heads Cluster Meeting On Friday 28 June Mrs Allen attended the final Heads Cluster meeting of the 2018-19 academic year to put in place the calendar of sport for the 2019-20 academic year.

Careers inspiration and advice from BBC Bitesize Explore BBC Bitesize’s brand new collection of free, online careers resources offering a wealth of inspiration and advice for students. This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: Explore BBC Bitesize Careers resources
Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

BIOGRAPHY: Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine USA in 1947. After his parents separated when Stephen was a toddler, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. He and Tabitha Spruce married in January of 1971. He met Tabitha in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University of Maine at Orono, where they both worked as students. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to magazines. Many of these were later gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies. In 1971, Stephen began teaching high school English classes at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.
Carrie his first novel was published in the spring of 1974. Since then King has published 58 novels and six non-fiction books. His books have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television series, and comic books. He has written approximately 200 short stories, most of which have been published in book collections.

Newsletter Highfields School Uniform Code A strict uniform code for years 7 to 11 is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code. The uniform code below is designed to be clear. Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure.

A single sleeper/stud in each ear and a watch
No rings, pendants, necklaces, non-school badges, festival wrist bands, ordinary wrist bands, charity wrist bands (unless sanctioned by school), facial jewellery or other body jewellery (eg nose studs, belly button piercings), tattoos (tattoos are not legally allowed until 18 years of age)
Warm weather resistant winter coat suitable for outdoor use
No leather jackets, denim jackets, hoodies (including plain black hoodies) or plain black cardigans. These items are not waterproof and will not be accepted as outdoor wear. School jumpers should be worn for warmth
Outdoor wear must be removed upon entry to the school building and stored in lockers Outdoor wear must not be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Hairstyles:
Hair should be of natural colour and not extreme in terms of style or cut Plain hair bands can be worn - no flowers or bows
Belts:
Plain black belts (without studs) can be worn to hold up trousers and not for decoration
Scarves:
Scarves should never be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Make-up:
Heavy make-up is not acceptable in school (no mascara, blusher, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick or fake tan) No nail varnish, false nails or nail extensions are allowed Students will be issued with appropriate ‘wipes’ in order to remove heavy make-up or nail varnish
Bags:
Bags should be of a suitable size to accommodate A4 sized books, folders and other equipment
Equipment:
All students are expected to have pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and any subject specific equipment every day
Please note: Many department stores also stock the items we list as non-logo wear. Please be cautious when purchasing uniform from retailers, as many advertise and sell fashion trousers/skirts as school uniform, but not all would comply with Highfields uniform code. If you require advice before making a purchase, please contact school. Where a term is disputed (e.g. ‘skinny’ or ‘short’) a senior leader will decide whether or not clothing reflects uniform code. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.
