Newsletter Message from the headteacher This week I got into a lively debate with my year 9 English class. It started with me challenging a student to tell me honestly whether her writing now was any better than it was back in September. From there it developed into a whole class discussion on the theme of ‘why do we exist?’, this was because I questioned the point of coming to my lessons if you weren’t going to challenge yourself to put into practice the writing techniques we are learning. I feel that life is too short to waste time and as long as you are banged up in a classroom with me for 50 minutes a week you may as well get something from it. My (very bright and entertaining) student replied that, as she couldn’t currently explain her existence on the planet, then learning became irrelevant as existence is essentially futile. From there we got into existentialism and nihilism until a kindly student pointed out that it was breaktime. I’ve written before that too many students come to school simply because they are told to. We at Highfields need to work even harder to remind them that school is a place which can a) help you make sense of the world around you and b) give you the skills and knowledge you need to thrive in a changing world/jobs market. A year 8 student shared this video (link given below) with me which raises some interesting questions about agency, choice and happiness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2NDQOgGycg Elsewhere in school this week I strayed into an A level biology lesson where a sombre mood prevailed because one of their woodlice had died. I peered into the plastic habitat they were observing and asked how they could tell whether they were dead or alive. Apparently, the live ones cling onto the bark when you lift it up and the dead ones don’t. Anyway, despite this loss they were learning pretty well about taxis and kinesis which describes the movement patterns of these and other creatures. I was going to joke that I had no idea that woodlice used taxis to get around, but I thought it was perhaps too soon after the passing of little Woody the woodlouse. Although these newsletters may give the impression that being a headteacher is just one lovely encounter after another, the truth is not always as simple as that. For this reason it is always a joy when you take a moment to let us know where we have succeeded. Thanks so much to the parent this week who took the time to write and say…
“I would just like to thank the Highfields Duke of Edinburgh team for all their support in enabling my son to complete his bronze walking expedition 2 weekends ago. In particular, thanks to the lead teacher who spent much of her time liaising with the D of E assessor to put in place measures to enable him to access the expedition. Also, thanks to his TA, who (along with another TA) devoted her entire weekend to 'shadow' my son on the expedition to ensure his safety… I expect you know how much this achievement means to a child with SEND. So, in brief, 'Thanks to Highfields staff for making it happen'!” And finally, did you see Charlie (Y9) and Imogen (Y7) on The Voice Kids? Good, weren’t they? And I nearly forgot Leah (Y9) upstaging Rob Lowe in ITV’s Wild Bill: our students are wonderful. A Marsh Headteacher

Year 10 work experience 24 June – 5 July 2019 Advice for year 10 students undertaking two weeks of work experience at the end of June: Preparation: Please ensure that you have signed and returned the Work Agreement form to school. Contact your placement: Check the dress code and whether you need personal protective equipment Check the times you will be expected to work Check mealtime provision Travel: Make sure you know how to get to your placement Where possible make a practice journey Punctuality is important Absence: If you are unable to attend contact both your placement and school. Work booklets: Make sure you fill the booklets in to record your experiences. These will be given out on the Work Experience day on Friday 21 June. Record of Achievement form: Your employer will be filling out a record of your achievements whilst you are on your placement. Please can you remind your employer. The forms can be downloaded from the school webpage. The employers have kindly agreed to provide you with a work placement so high standards of behaviour at all times is expected. Sixth Form Induction Days for Year 12 September 2019 Cohort We look forward to welcoming year 11 students to our sixth form induction days on Thursday 27 June and Friday 28 June. These days will include form activities and taster lessons on both days for A Level subjects. We will be following a normal school day and will meet students at 8.40am in the sixth form canteen. Students are not expected to attend in school uniform and we recommend a packed lunch as our canteen is currently closed for refurbishment.

Newsletter Sports Day reminder – Wednesday 26 June A reminder that Highfields annual House sports day for all students in years 7, 8, and 9 will take place next week, Wednesday 26 June at Lumsdale (upper school site). Our Starkholmes site will be closed and year 7 and 8 students will join year 9s at Lumsdale. Bus companies will ensure students who normally catch school transport are taken directly to Lumsdale for the start of the day and returned home at the end of the school day as usual. Students from Starkholmes who do not usually catch a bus will need to make their own transport arrangements to Lumsdale as there will be no bus service available from the Starkholmes site. Year 7 and 8 students will be met at the front of school (Lumsdale) from 8.20am and taken to their allocated form room for the day. Students are asked to arrive at Lumsdale dressed in their PE kit with their house colour top and to bring with them a packed lunch, water bottle and appropriate snacks for break, as no food will be served during the day. Please ensure your child brings appropriate clothing for the weather, ie waterproof clothing, hat, sun cream etc depending on the forecast for the day. Students do not need to bring books, pens or planners on the day. Usual lessons will be replaced with a range of activities including traditional sporting events and house based competitions. The sports day programme will end at approximately 3.15pm. All students will return to their form base before leaving school to walk or catch buses home. Based on the weather forecast for Wednesday we will make a decision on Tuesday afternoon if we feel there may be a need to cancel the event. We will inform you via email in the event of cancellation.
Moorways Athletics – Friday 28 June Students from years 7-9 involved in Moorways Athletics will be travelling to Derby on Friday to compete against other Derbyshire Sales schools in a range of athletic competitions. Students involved will be leaving school around 9am and returning for 3.30pm. information please contact Mr Shirtcliffe.

Newsletter School news Year 11 student’s Westend opportunity Miss Bonsall
I am very proud to let you all know about the amazingly talented Daisy's recent success! Year 11 Daisy, who has just sat her Drama and Music GCSE’s whilst taking part in the school show rehearsals and auditioning for other opportunities, has bagged herself an incredible opportunity that could just be her big break! Having already performed as Young Fiona on the ‘Shrek: The Musical’ UK Tour and sang with musical theatre boy band ‘Collabro’ in Sheffield, Daisy already has impressive credits for a 15 year old student. Let’s not forget she was also the lead female in our own rendition of Footloose in July 2018, where she brought the house down each night with her excellent, professional performance. However, excitingly for Daisy, she has an important fixture in her busy performing schedule before starring in this year’s musical of Legally Blonde as ‘Margot’. On 30 June Daisy will perform in a London Westend Theatre. Daisy recently auditioned to sing in Danielle Hope’s concert at The Other Palace in London and has been successful! She will sing alongside Danielle (Dorothy in Wizard of Oz - made famous on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s search for a Dorothy TV programme) in her intimate ’Sunday Favourites’ concert. This concert is one in a series of Lambert Jackson Production exclusive solo concerts, featuring some of the biggest names in theatre. Danielle Hope was the winner of the BBC talent contest ‘Over The Rainbow’ and as a result played the part of Dorothy in the Andrew Lloyd Webber Production of The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium in 2011. She has since starred as Eponine in Les Miserables and Sandy in Grease. This is an incredible opportunity for Daisy, which is exceptionally well deserved. We wish her every bit of luck for the concert of Sunday 30 June, and for her future in performing. We know she’ll be so successful! Break a leg, Daisy!

Key Stage 2 Orienteering Last Friday, 14 June, students were involved in key stage 2 orienteering activities. Derwent valley orienteers sent a team of nine helpers for this brilliant event and the weather almost held out again! Students from Lea and South Darley had a brilliant time and were glad the event still continued despite the weather forecast. Highfields trained sports leaders were again outstanding and highly praised by students, staff, parents and the Derwent Valley orienteers. Winners of the year 5-6 courses (A and B) were South Darley, Lea won the year 5-6 (C course) and the year 3-4 course winners were also Lea Primary – well done to all!

Newsletter Top Link Sports Day On Tuesday 18 June the 2019 Top Link Sports Day was held at Darley Dale Primary School. A team of 22 sports leaders were fantastic leading the whole of Darley Dale Primary in orienteering, tag rugby, kwik cricket, rounders, tennis, athletics, archery and benchball. Mrs Hill, our sports link teacher at Darley Dale was thanked during the event for working with us for the past 13 years now she is moving to Lea Primary School in September. The leaders led eight groups of 20 children through the activities and adapted them for all the ages reception to year 6. This event has been running for the last 11 years and one in which the Darley Dale staff and students look forward to. As ever, the staff were highly complementary to the way our sports leaders run the event.

Newsletter Key Stage 3 Girl’s Cricket The key stage 3 girl’s cricket day 2019 took place on Wednesday 19 June at Darley Dale Cricket Club. A group of 20 girls travelled in Darley Dale Cricket Club to be coached by Stuart Rudkin, year 13 leader Harry and year 12 leader Ben. They were coached in batting, bowling and fielding before playing games in the afternoon.

Newsletter Key Stage 2 Rounders Key stage 2 rounders took place today, Friday 21 June – full details will be reported in next week’s newsletter.
24-28 June – National School Sport Week 2019 Highfields School has signed up to the Youth Sport Trust (YST) National School Sport Week. More than 800 students will join schools up and down the country in being part of a week-long celebration of the power of PE and school sport to improve young people’s wellbeing in June. YST National School Sport Week (NSSW) will inspire schools and supporters to use PE and school sport much more intentionally to promote wellbeing and support the personal development of young people. Our students will have the opportunity to take part in ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ between 24 to 28 June. The Youth Sport Trust, which has been working in partnership with education for 24 years to improve the provision and impact of physical education, play and sport, has said too many young people are missing out on the life-changing benefits that can be delivered with the right approach, and it’s time for change. Ali Oliver, Chief Executive Officer at the Youth Sport Trust, said “It’s fantastic that Highfields School is
taking part and showing their commitment to championing the power of sport to improve young people’s lives. The wellbeing of young people has been in decline and too many are struggling with issues that a good quality Physical Education could support them with. But four in five young people aren’t active enough and schools have been cutting time for PE on the curriculum. To turn this around we need like-minded schools, teachers, parents, young people and others to join together this YST National School Sport Week and show why PE and sport have an essential role to play in every young person’s development and that the subject should have the same importance as Maths and English within a child’s education. The focus of YST National School Sport Week 2019 will be on raising awareness of the vital role of PE and school sport in helping young people experience the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: i) getting them active, ii) connecting, iii) giving back, iv) taking notice and v) learning. I’d urge anyone who cares about young people’s health, happiness and success in school to sign up and join our campaign to improve young people’s lives.” There will be the chance for schools to win a visit from one of the Youth Sport Trust’s inspirational athlete mentors by sharing their best photos and videos during the week on social media demonstrating this year’s theme. Among those championing the week will be Ben Smith, the man who ran 401 marathons in 401 days. Schools will be given an opportunity for their students to be part of his next awe-inspiring challenge, USA 2020, through a partnership with the Youth Sport Trust and his 401 Foundation, which will culminate in National School Sport Week 2020. Ben, a wellbeing ambassador for the Youth Sport Trust, said “I’m delighted to be working with the
Youth Sport Trust. Their mission is really close to my heart because I believe that physical exercise can help people to ‘find their happy’ and improve their wellbeing irrespective of their ability or background.”

This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: Explore BBC Bitesize Careers resources
Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Newsletter Highfields School Uniform Code A strict uniform code for years 7 to 11 is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code. The uniform code below is designed to be clear. Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure.

Shoes should be black and polishable with no logos Plain black socks with trousers Plain black tights with skirts During snow and ice, students should wear footwear appropriate to the conditions.

No tight skirts, short skirts, fashion skirts, fashion trousers, skinny jeans, skinny trousers, low slung trousers, jeggings, tracksuit bottoms, chinos, combats, cords, leggings or denim of any colour, no detail on skirts or trousers such as zips, metal studs or buckles.

A single sleeper/stud in each ear and a watch
No rings, pendants, necklaces, non-school badges, festival wrist bands, ordinary wrist bands, charity wrist bands (unless sanctioned by school), facial jewellery or other body jewellery (eg nose studs, belly button piercings), tattoos (tattoos are not legally allowed until 18 years of age)
Warm weather resistant winter coat suitable for outdoor use
No leather jackets, denim jackets, hoodies (including plain black hoodies) or plain black cardigans. These items are not waterproof and will not be accepted as outdoor wear. School jumpers should be worn for warmth
Outdoor wear must be removed upon entry to the school building and stored in lockers Outdoor wear must not be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Hairstyles:
Hair should be of natural colour and not extreme in terms of style or cut Plain hair bands can be worn - no flowers or bows
Belts:
Plain black belts (without studs) can be worn to hold up trousers and not for decoration
Scarves:
Scarves should never be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Make-up:
Heavy make-up is not acceptable in school (no mascara, blusher, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick or fake tan) No nail varnish, false nails or nail extensions are allowed Students will be issued with appropriate ‘wipes’ in order to remove heavy make-up or nail varnish
Bags:
Bags should be of a suitable size to accommodate A4 sized books, folders and other equipment
Equipment:
All students are expected to have pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and any subject specific equipment every day
Please note: Many department stores also stock the items we list as non-logo wear. Please be cautious when purchasing uniform from retailers, as many advertise and sell fashion trousers/skirts as school uniform, but not all would comply with Highfields uniform code. If you require advice before making a purchase, please contact school. Where a term is disputed (e.g. ‘skinny’ or ‘short’) a senior leader will decide whether or not clothing reflects uniform code. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone.
