Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Highfields uniform – September 2018 From September 2018 we will be enforcing a strict uniform policy for Years 7 to 11. Students have been given a letter to bring home outlining the school uniform policy from September, along with a copy of the policy (copies of both have also been emailed home and are available on the website).

We ask that you read the policy carefully as amendments to uniform have been made - the main points have tightened up the existing policy covering footwear, trousers and skirts in particular.

Students will be informed of the changes and consequences of non-compliance in assemblies over the coming weeks.

A school uniform helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply, and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School.

To reduce confusion at the start of the academic year, as well as help avoid consequences for students and wasted money purchasing uniform items that will not be accepted, Heads of Year will visit form groups during tutor time to advise students on any parts of their uniform that would not be acceptable in September. Pastoral Managers will also inform parents/carers of any items that will not comply to ensure the correct uniform is purchased for the new academic year.

We appreciate your support to ensure students arrive in the correct uniform from the start of September so that it is fair to everyone and we can focus on learning and progress to ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.

Highfields parent/carer survey You will have recently received a letter from Andrew Marsh, our new headteacher from September, outlining his aims for Highfields. In the letter he mentioned he would be sending out a survey to students, parents/carers and staff to enable everyone to contribute views on the school’s improvement priorities.

We would very much like as many parents/carers as possible to take part in the parent/carer survey which will be sent electronically to your email account.

Students will be emailed with a link to their survey through their school email accounts which they can access through the school website.

We would like to receive all responses in by 20 July deadline and appreciate you taking a few minutes to answer the six survey questions. All responses will go directly to Mr Marsh.

Newsletter Challenge Day Reminder – Friday 20 July A reminder of the changes to the arrangements to the school day for the end of year ‘Challenge Day’ on the last day of term 1. School timetable for Friday 20 July: The event will take place at our Lumsdale site to allow all students to participate in activities in their House groups. We are amending the timetable for the school day to allow school to close at 1.45pm for the start of the summer holiday to enable the majority of school buses to collect students early.

This year’s theme will be based around ‘HMS Highfields’ and all students and staff are invited to dress up in costume for the day following this theme. Students will be asked to pay £1 in order to have an HMS Highfields ‘activity’ pass. This pass will allow them to have access to all the various activities available on the 2018 Challenge Day. The usual timetable of lessons will be suspended and students will be involved in a day of individual and team ‘challenges’, Year group celebrations and awards, with a range of activities based around the theme of the day. Activities will be based in classrooms and on the field. In the event of bad weather, the event will transfer inside. The day will end with awards from the challenges being presented.

2. Catering arrangements: A range of light refreshments and snacks will be available throughout the morning from the tuck shop and ice-cream stall. Students will need to bring money with them if they wish to purchase these items.

Burgers, sausage and chips will be served for lunch in the canteen and students can pay via the cashless catering system as normal. Students who have free school meals must inform either Mrs Green (Starkholmes) or Mr Tidmarsh (Lumsdale) by Thursday 12 July if they would like a sandwich lunch to be provided.

3. School transport Start of school arrangements - We have made arrangements with the bus companies to ensure students who normally catch school transport are taken directly to Lumsdale for the start of the day. Students from Starkholmes who do not usually catch a bus will need to make their own transport arrangements to Lumsdale as there will be no bus service available from the Starkholmes site.

End of school arrangements - Contract buses (G&J Holmes, Slacks and Andrews buses) will be able to collect between 1.45pm-2pm.

Unfortunately, three of the local service buses (Littles, Your Bus and Hulleys local service bus) are unable to amend their timetable to collect students early. Students who usually catch these service buses will need to make their own arrangements.

Should these amended arrangements cause you childcare issues, please contact the school and we will look at providing supervision up until 3.30pm.

Newsletter School News Ex-Highfields student awarded Derby College’s Student of the Year More than 200 people gathered for the annual Derby College Peak Awards at the historic Roundhouse to celebrate the achievements of students across the organisation.

Awards were presented by representatives of local businesses who had sponsored individual awards.

Two special prizes were awarded on the night – Student of the Year and Apprentice of the Year.

Student of the Year was Lauren Hudson (18) from Matlock who has studied Health and Social Care at the College after attending Highfields School.

Lauren will leave College this summer with a Distinction star and has completed several placements including at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where she was also a member of the Employer Academy to give her a greater insight into the career opportunities available across the organisation.

She has accepted a place at the University of Birmingham to study Children’s Nursing and said after the Peak Awards: “I am really honoured to have won Student of the Year. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Derby College. Staff are very supportive but give you the freedom to learn independently which will better prepare me for university study.”

Derby College Chief Executive Mandie Stravino said: “The Peak Awards is the highlight of the College year. It is amazing showcase of young people who are now well prepared for the next stage of their lives – whether that the world of work, higher education or to start their own business. Furthermore, the success of adult learners who are progressing in their careers through further and higher education opportunities at the College has also been a true inspiration to us all.”

Newsletter Sports News Mr Shirtcliffe Our annual Sports Day was held on Thursday 28 June. The weather was brilliant and the students turned out in force. The day was a mix of athletics and traditional fun and games followed by a series of active and engaging games for all abilities. The students were fully committed to the events and were all active throughout the day.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff and students that were involved in such a wonderful day.

I will let you read the article from a student’s perspective below as the day also allowed for students to become sports journalists, I'm sure you agree it is a great piece of work.

Highfields School enjoys Sports Day Students of Highfields school once again participated in the annual event making the most of the summer days.

On 28 June students from Years 7, 8 and 9 joined together at the Lumsdale site of Highfields School.

As part of the sports week where games such as rounders were played at lunch time and after school, an entire day was dedicated to sports and helping children to remain active. Four different houses competed to receive a trophy.

The first morning session was for track events, when running races as well as the more traditional sports were played. The 100m was the first race, followed by races of increasing distance. All the races had students pushing themselves to the limits to reach the finishing lines first. Running at the same time was the long jumps, with students cheering each other on enthusiastically. The obstacle course race was another activity which had students crawling under nets and hopping through tyres.

Even teachers took part in it, drawing lots of laughs from the students watching. The tug-of-war proved to be the most intense competition, with five boys and five girls representing their house in their year group heaving with all their might. The teams appeared equally matched as a winning team was not easily decided.

The rest of the day was then split into three parts with games played in rotation. The organised games helped students to test their different abilities. Games such as capture the howler (a variation of capture the flag) had students thinking strategically; boccia tested the students precision and combat ball with students using their agility to dodge the balls.

After the sessions, dance music was put on by teachers with students dancing to the Macarena and Saturday Night. The school record for the number of students dancing to the Cha Cha Slide was also raised from 0 to unknown.

Finally, the results were counted with both teachers and students waiting nervously. The results were very close with Terra and Aeris in 1st and 2nd place respectively followed by Ignis and then Aqua. 1st and 2nd were separated by about 60 points with 3rd and 4th separated by just 20 points.

Teachers commended the students for "giving everything" for sports day with applause also given to Mr Shirtcliffe for his tremendous effort in organising the event.

Newsletter Derbyshire Dales Athletics Championships Following Sports Day, on 29 June we took 70 students from Years 7, 8 and 9 to compete in our annual Derbyshire Dales Athletics Championships at Moorways Stadium. Again, the students behaved extremely well and their performances were excellent. We have quite a lot of high placed finishes with several coming first - well done to all those involved!

County Netball Tournament On Tuesday 3 July the Year 8 Rounders team travelled to Lady Manners School to take part in the County Netball tournament. We lost our first game against Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, but we learned from this and beat Chapel en le Frith, before finally losing narrowly to Lady Manners in a shortened game.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Association for Physical Education (afPE) Annual Conference Mrs Allen attended the annual afPE conference at St George’s Park, Burton-upon-Trent on Tuesday 3 July-Wednesday 4 July with key notes speeches given by Professor Chris Roebuck, Peter Hall Jones, Peter Cohen, Katherine Merry, Jayne Molyneux and Matthew Meckin.

Primary Sports Evenings Wednesday 4 July was the final session of the 2017/18 primary sports evenings. A huge well done to PE apprentice Mr Molyneux who has been outstanding in his delivery of these evenings all year.

A huge well done to our primary evening school of the year South Darley, they have been so committed and enthusiastic all year.

Elton School Sports Day Elton School held their Sports Day on Thursday 5 July – well done to PE apprentice Mr Molyneux on his organisation of the day!

Derbyshire Health & Wellbeing event at Highfields As a lead school for Health & Wellbeing, on Thursday 5 July Highfields hosted a Derbyshire Health and Wellbeing morning of tuition from GB tennis star Jade Windley on the Active in Health Project.

Students from Highfields, Queen Elizabeth’s, Hope Valley, Lady Manners and Tupton Hall were in attendance being prepared to deliver activities to the new Year 7 students in September 2018.

PE Apprentice Interviews On Friday 6 July PE Apprentice interviews took place. The new team for 2018/19 will be revealed in the next newsletter.

Jane made a mistake when writing down a multiplication, and she multiplied by 54 instead of 45.

Her answer was 198 too big.

What number did she multiply 54 by?

Solution: 54 × 22 = 1188 and 45× 21 = 990.

The difference between 1188 and 990 is 198!

So the number must have been 22.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
