Newsletter Message from the headteacher The other day I decided that my son had been glued to a screen for too long and asked him to go out and bounce on the trampoline for a while. He agreed very quickly but when I spotted him out of a window I was dismayed and impressed in equal measure as he was managing to bounce successfully whilst still watching his tablet. Technology will be inextricably linked with our children’s futures. We are keen to balance this fact against the wellbeing implications of treating screen use as a default activity. Over the next few weeks our senior leadership team is entering conversations with student parliament about the extent to which our school should extend the time that many students spend looking at a screen daily. At the moment we allow years 9-13 to access their devices during break and lunch and this is additional to the thousands of hours available outside of school time. We will be exploring with students whether this time in school, surrounded by facilities, friends and opportunities for learning is best spent looking at a screen. We will update you on how this discussion develops. This week in lessons has been as fascinating as usual. In a history lesson students were learning that you can make a pretty decent sledge from the rib cage of a buffalo, although the student I spoke to reminded me you could also get sledges from Aldi, a fact which I pointed out would have been of limited use to early American settlers. In science year 10 students were learning about endothermic and exothermic reactions. I liked the fact that the teacher had explained where in life they may see these kinds of reactions. I think it’s always best when students can connect what they are learning about to the world around them. As explained in an earlier email we have been working with a self-defence expert to build confidence and resilience in some potential school leaders. He told me that he had advertised a similar service on social media and had been perturbed to receive enquiries from two Highfields parents who believed that their children were being bullied. We do not make brash claims at Highfields and are never complacent about bullying. Please work with us to intervene early where bullying may be taking place. One of our foci for teachers this year has been around questioning. I was reminded of the need for precise questioning when a young doctor asked my daughter in A&E this week (she’s fine now) whereabouts her leg hurt. My daughter thought carefully about the question and replied, ‘mainly in Chesterfield’. We will continue to work on our questioning but will now be looking at a range of other strategies in the classroom as part of our Big 3 plan for 2019-20. Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Mobile phones in school I am currently looking at mobile phones and the role they play in the lives of our students. We believe smart phones are great tools, but have concerns about the hours our students spend looking at screens and not making strong person to person relationships. Year 10 work experience 24 June – 5 July 2019 Advice for year 10 students undertaking two weeks of work experience at the end of June: Preparation: Please ensure that you have signed and returned the Work Agreement form to school. Contact your placement: Check the dress code and whether you need personal protective equipment Check the times you will be expected to work Check meal time provision Travel: Make sure you know how to get to your placement Where possible make a practice journey Punctuality is important Absence: If you are unable to attend contact both your placement and school. Work booklets: Make sure you fill the booklets in to record your experiences. These will be given out on the Work Experience day on Friday 21 June. Record of Achievement form: Your employer will be filling out a record of your achievements whilst you are on your placement. Please can you remind your employer. The forms can be downloaded from the school webpage. The employers have kindly agreed to provide you with a work placement so high standards of behaviour at all times is expected. Newsletter Higher Education Evening - Wednesday 19 June 7pm in the Wheeldon Hall
We will be welcoming representatives from the University of Leicester and the University of Nottingham to our Higher Education Evening on Wednesday 20 June from 7pm to 8.30pm. They will be giving useful insights into studying, choosing courses, making applications and student finance. There will also be opportunity to ask questions and there will be some information about apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships. We recommend the evening for both students and parents/carers, even where students feel that university is not for them.
Sixth Form Induction Days for Year 12 September 2019 Cohort We look forward to welcoming year 11 students to our sixth form induction days on Thursday 27 June and Friday 28 June. These days will include form activities and taster lessons on both days for A Level subjects. We will be following a normal school day and will meet students at 8.40am in the sixth form canteen. Students are not expected to attend in school uniform and we recommend a packed lunch as our canteen is currently closed for refurbishment.

Newsletter School news Highfields drama students London experience Miss Bonsall
Highfields students were lucky enough to experience an inspiring and engaging trip to London at the start of the Easter holidays. We went for a 3 day residential trip, focusing on the performing arts. Year 10-13 students took part in many fun drama, dance, music and theatre related activities. All of the students were invited on the trip as a reward for the hard work they put into last year’s Musical or their attitude to learning in GCSE and A level performing arts subjects. Whilst away, students took part in a ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ workshop led by a West End professional who was performing in the very same musical. This allowed students to explore their characterisation, acting and movement skills. The students watched ’Six’ Friday evening, a performance about the 6 wives of Henry VIII at the Arts Theatre, an off-west end stage, after a brilliant 2 course meal at Hard Rock Cafe. Students described this show as ‘flawless’ and ‘sensational’! Their jaws were nearly at the floor for the whole 2 and a half hours! Daisy said: ‘It was so clever. It’s one of my new favourites!’. Students were also lucky enough to see a matinee performance of ’The Woman in Black'. The backstage tour of the National Theatre was another highlight of the trip where they explored behind the stage of the theatre seeing the making of props, set and costume. Students explored all areas of the working theatre and found the artists studio, the joinery and carpentry area as well as the 3 full working theatres. Students also had a walk through London, passing Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and the Houses of Parliament. They enjoyed quality time on Oxford Street and in Covent Garden, too. We all also enjoyed ‘Thriller Live!' on Saturday night; a fun concert musical for all to sing and dance to! Miss Bonsall who led the trip, said: “The students were superbly behaved and very enthusiastic for the whole trip! They enjoyed a sleepover with their friends at the Royal National Hotel (Russell Square) and an all-you-can-eat hot breakfast, too! They were a delight to take away and I was very proud of their theatre etiquette whilst watching the shows, as well as their dedicated hard work in the workshop – the videos are available to watch @HighfieldsDrama Twitter page. I get a buzz every time they demonstrate their true love for performing. They really are a pleasure!”

Newsletter MVIS student challenge Mrs Turner
MVIS teamed up year 8 and 9 students from Highfields to set up two challenging, intriguing tasks. Firstly, year 8 students were tasked with a safety initiative. The students were briefed on site safety and its importance then were set the challenge of developing a new safety idea that could be adopted on sites nationwide. The children identified ‘Hat before that’, a safety initiative aimed at driving all on construction and highways sites to think about wearing a hard hat before carrying out any task. Anne Ashman, General Manager of MVIS told us: “It was very clever of the year 8’s to think of this. Whilst we all know about the importance of PPE when on site, the children highlighted that all visitors generally will have to report to a reception or site office and even this journey can encounter possible risk on some sites. So, their solution was to have safety Year 8 students bring their ‘Hat before that’ safety message to life. focused around hard hat wearing when arriving to the site to eradicate some risks in that first entry. Ideas that were discussed were an intercom and escort system where the site office brings out hard hats to arriving people to make sure they enter wearing one and then escorting them to vehicles as they leave to cover the reverse journey upon leaving.” Highfields’ year 9 students were informed of Bartco UK’s decision to foray into VMS hire across International markets and were tasked with discovering ways in which Bartco can stand out from the crowd in a new market.

The year 9s developed an idea around sustainability and in addition to MVIS signs carrying essential highways and journey time information, they could also be utilised sustainably using solar power to preach sustainability across France.

Newsletter The children focused on programming MVIS VMS signs with messages surrounding anti-pollution and climate change in order to become more than ‘just road signs’ for the French market. Anne Ashman commented “This really impressed us, as these are key issues within our sector and indeed, globally. Carbon footprint, climate change and environmental concerns are at the forefront of the evolution of so many company strategies going forward as the pressure builds to go greener. We’re in a position that we can use very environmentally friendly solutions to spread that word, literally put it in the faces of people and make it a part of everyday life. We thought this was a very forward-thinking approach from the children and reflected fantastically on Highfields school that their students are so vigilant of these worldwide issues.”
Highfields students’ debut on The Voice Kids Series three of The Voice Kids has returned to our screens on a Saturday evening and we thought you may be interested to know that two of our students, Charlie (year 9) and Imogen (year 7), will be appearing this Saturday (15 June) on ITV from 8pm.

BIOGRAPHY: Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine USA in 1947. After his parents separated when Stephen was a toddler, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. He and Tabitha Spruce married in January of 1971. He met Tabitha in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University of Maine at Orono, where they both worked as students. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to magazines. Many of these were later gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies. In 1971, Stephen began teaching high school English classes at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.
Carrie his first novel was published in the spring of 1974. Since then King has published 58 novels and six non-fiction books. His books have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television series, and comic books. He has written approximately 200 short stories, most of which have been published in book collections.

Primary outdoor adventures Last Friday, 7 June, on a very wet afternoon 60 key stage 1 students came to visit our Starkholmes site for an afternoon of outdoor adventurous activities. Acclimbatize OAA group came to lead the young students on a variety of activities which were supported by our year 7, 8, 9 and 10 sports leaders and the PE apprentices. Schools attending were All Saints, Winster, Elton, St Giles and South Darley. The young students had the opportunity to attempt nine stations of teambuilding exercises and archery. They were denied the opportunity to try the mobile climbing wall due to the conditions.
Beyond the Baseline tennis project On Monday 10 June key stage 3 students took part in the first of three sessions on the Beyond the Baseline tennis project. GB player, Jade Windley, came to visit and lead the students in theory and a practical session.
Quad kids athletics All Saints and Lea Primary represented the Highfields Cluster in the School Sports Partnership quad kids athletic finals held at Lady Manners on Tuesday 11 June.
PE apprentice update On Wednesday 12 June Mrs Allen and Mrs Turner visited Kirk Ireton Primary School to see Mr Hill undertake his final lesson observation teaching athletics to a year 1-2 group as a level 3 PE apprentice. All the PE apprentice - Miss Tabbenor, Mr Edenbrow and Mr Hill, are now on their final stretch in the level 3 qualification for PE and school sport. Mr Molyneux is reaching the final observations in his level 5 APFE/Sports Leaders UK qualification for his Primary Physical Education Certificate.

Newsletter Primary Sports evening Year 9 leaders and PE apprentices led South Darley students in rounders training at the primary sports evening week 2 on 12 June.
Health Ambassadors On Wednesday 12 June year 9 Health Ambassadors attended All Saints Primary School to lead a physical activity club for intervention students. Mr Molyneux along with Libby and Emily led a fantastic session on table tennis.
Orienteering Championships Today, Friday 14 June, was the key stage 2 orienteering championships for the Highfields cluster. Schools attending were All Saints, Wessington, Lea, Elton and South Darley. These schools came with a year 3/4 team and year 5/6 team. The students were challenged by three set courses and a variety of mapping exercises which were led by the trained sports leaders. British Orienteering Chair, Judith Holt, led the proceedings with the support of Derwent Valley Orienteers - more news on the results and photos in next week newsletter.

Careers inspiration and advice from BBC Bitesize Explore BBC Bitesize’s brand new collection of free, online careers resources offering a wealth of inspiration and advice for students. This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: Explore BBC Bitesize Careers resources
Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s school book club recommendation is ‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding This is a great book for any teenager and really interesting as well as being a classic. It is about a group of boys who get stranded on a deserted island with no way to communicate with the outside world. We see their struggles to cope with each other and when all hope is lost friendships are tested. Ellie (year 10)

Newsletter Highfields School Uniform Code A strict uniform code for years 7 to 11 is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code. The uniform code below is designed to be clear. Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure.

Shoes should be black and polishable with no logos Plain black socks with trousers Plain black tights with skirts During snow and ice, students should wear footwear appropriate to the conditions.
No shoes with heels, logos/other colours/flashes appearing on the design, trainers, boots, ankle boots, canvas/fabric/suede shoes, slipon ballet shoes, flip flops, sandals or fashion shoes

No tight skirts, short skirts, fashion skirts, fashion trousers, skinny jeans, skinny trousers, low slung trousers, jeggings, tracksuit bottoms, chinos, combats, cords, leggings or denim of any colour, no detail on skirts or trousers such as zips, metal studs or buckles.

A single sleeper/stud in each ear and a watch
No rings, pendants, necklaces, non-school badges, festival wrist bands, ordinary wrist bands, charity wrist bands (unless sanctioned by school), facial jewellery or other body jewellery (eg nose studs, belly button piercings), tattoos (tattoos are not legally allowed until 18 years of age)
Warm weather resistant winter coat suitable for outdoor use
No leather jackets, denim jackets, hoodies (including plain black hoodies) or plain black cardigans. These items are not waterproof and will not be accepted as outdoor wear. School jumpers should be worn for warmth
Outdoor wear must be removed upon entry to the school building and stored in lockers Outdoor wear must not be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Hairstyles:
Hair should be of natural colour and not extreme in terms of style or cut Plain hair bands can be worn - no flowers or bows
Belts:
Plain black belts (without studs) can be worn to hold up trousers and not for decoration
Scarves:
Scarves should never be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Make-up:
Heavy make-up is not acceptable in school (no mascara, blusher, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick or fake tan) No nail varnish, false nails or nail extensions are allowed Students will be issued with appropriate ‘wipes’ in order to remove heavy make-up or nail varnish
Bags:
Bags should be of a suitable size to accommodate A4 sized books, folders and other equipment
Equipment:
All students are expected to have pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and any subject specific equipment every day
Please note: Many department stores also stock the items we list as non-logo wear. Please be cautious when purchasing uniform from retailers, as many advertise and sell fashion trousers/skirts as school uniform, but not all would comply with Highfields uniform code. If you require advice before making a purchase, please contact school. Where a term is disputed (e.g. ‘skinny’ or ‘short’) a senior leader will decide whether or not clothing reflects uniform code. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
