Newsletter Message from the headteacher A rushed newsletter this week as I am writing this very late on Thursday evening as I have been extremely busy with improvement planning for next year. The senior team and I are in the process of consulting staff and students (we will be bearing in mind your survey responses as always). Something that people ask me about our emerging objectives is why many of them include the phrase ‘…especially vulnerable cohorts’. The same people make the perfectly understandable point that we should simply refer to ‘all students’. The thing is … we find in schools that, whilst all students deserve a great education all the time, some need more help than others. You may even find as parents/carers that just within your families there are times when one child needs more attention or support than another. This doesn’t mean that you value them differently, it just means that at that time one is struggling a little more than the other. So it is in schools. However, even if this weren’t my personal belief, the government gives schools specific funds to offer extra support to vulnerable cohorts of students and schools are duty bound to use these funds wisely. Busy or not I always make time to get into lessons because that, beyond budgets and contracts and policies, is where the really interesting stuff happens. In a year 9 lesson on Tuesday morning I bounded in and then edged slowly out again when I realised that the teacher was having a full and frank discussion with students about the extent to which they were responding to the teacher’s ‘next steps’ in their books. I saw one of the students later and they said graciously that the teacher was making a ‘fair point’ because there’s no point marking books if students aren’t going to take any notice. On Wednesday afternoon at Starkholmes I came across a class full of year 6s; future year 7s on an induction day. They were making a ‘diamond 9’ to represent their worst fears about joining secondary school in September. I really enjoyed chatting to them for a minute and finding out why they had put ‘bullying’ at the top of the tree. Extremely interesting and plenty of food for thought. Finally, this morning I was invited to an A level history lesson only to find David Lloyd George chained to explosives. Students frantically tried to solve clues with which they could undo the padlocks and save him from certain death. This escape room challenge was designed to get students to revise a key topic before an upcoming examination. I had to leave to teach my own lesson and I got so busy later in the day that I forgot to check whether he had survived the ordeal …

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Year 9 end of year exams Year 9 students will have end of year exams in the sports hall for maths, English and science on the 20 and 21 June. These exams are an important step in preparing the students for their GCSE exams in year 11; they will prepare them for the processes and rules of external exams and will also help to prepare them for having to revise and remember a large amount of learning for an exam. Please help your son / daughter and us by supporting their revision in the next few weeks and in ensuring they do not miss school on 20 and 21 June unless an absence cannot be avoided. Newsletter Reminder: sports day arrangements – Wednesday 26 June 2019 A reminder that our annual house sports day for all students in years 7, 8, and 9 is taking place on Wednesday 26 June at Lumsdale (upper school site). Our Starkholmes site will be closed for the day and the year 7 and 8 students will join year 9 students at Lumsdale. Arrangements have been made with the bus companies to ensure students who normally catch school transport are taken directly to Lumsdale for the start of the day and returned home at the end of the school day as usual. Students from Starkholmes who do not usually catch a bus will need to make their own transport arrangements to Lumsdale as there will be no bus service available from the Starkholmes site. Year 7 and 8 students will be met at the front of school (Lumsdale) from 8.20am and taken to their allocated form room for the day. Students are asked to arrive at Lumsdale dressed in their PE kit with their house colour top and to bring with them a packed lunch, water bottle and appropriate snacks for break, as no food will be served during the day. Students who have free school meals should have already informed their Pastoral Manager (Mrs Green or Mr Tidmarsh) by Friday 21 June if they would like a sandwich lunch to be provided. Please ensure your child brings appropriate clothing for the weather, ie waterproof clothing, hat, sun cream etc depending on the forecast for the day. Students do not need to bring books, pens or planners on the day. Usual lessons will be replaced with a range of activities including traditional sporting events and house based competitions. The sports day programme will end at approximately 3.15pm. All students will return to their form base before leaving school to walk or catch buses home. Please agree with your child whether they will walk home, catch school transport, catch a service bus or wait for you to collect them from the Lumsdale site. If you have any concerns about this, please telephone school and speak to your child’s Head of Year or Pastoral Manager. We are all looking forward to this opportunity for our students to participate in their houses in a variety of sporting events. Based on the weather forecast for Wednesday we will make a decision on Tuesday afternoon if we feel there may be a need to cancel the event. We will inform you via email in the event of cancellation. The bus companies will also be informed and students in years 7 and 8 will be taken to the Starkholmes site and lessons will be as normal. If the weather deteriorates during the day and we decide to abandon the event, students will return to their form room on the Lumsdale site for planned activities and will be supervised until 3.30pm.

Newsletter School news Fieldwork fun! Mrs Barker This has been a very busy week for fieldwork with two year groups out of the classroom carrying out geographical investigations. Year 7 have been investigating whether Matlock is a clone town ... they are yet to reach their conclusions! Meanwhile year 12 have had two adventures this week. On Monday they went to Ainsdale sand dunes to investigate the link between soil type and vegetation coverage and yesterday they rounded off their A level fieldwork with investigations into urban change. Prior to heading out for fieldwork, year 12 students were responsible for planning every aspect of the investigation as this represents the fieldwork component of their A level Geography and is worth 20% of their A level mark.

Newsletter Best-selling author visits Highfields Mrs Robinson
We were delighted to welcome master of horror, Chris Priestley, to Highfields at the end of last term. Chris, who is one of the country’s leading children’s authors, spent the day entertaining and inspiring year 8 students. We are very grateful to local Matlock company, Twiggs, whose generous support made the event possible. Best known for his spooky “Tales of Terror” series, Chris inspired students to come up with their own horror story ideas in a series of workshops throughout Chris Priestley with year 8 the day. He revealed some really useful hints and tips students for creating interesting characters and thrilling plots, and students have already started to use his invaluable advice on how to plan a story in their own creative writing.
Chris Priestley’s books are some of the most-borrowed books in the school library at lower school and many students were thrilled to meet the writer of their favourite stories. “We’re delighted to continue to support Highfields School in its efforts to foster a love of reading in its students. The ability to read well should never be underestimated. It affects every area of our lives; not least our academic success and choice of career. But, just as importantly, reading is good for our mental health. It helps us to empathise with others and connect with the world around us.” said Richard Tarbatt, Managing Director at Twiggs. Recent international research shows that there is a difference in reading ability equivalent to just over a year's schooling between young people who never read for enjoyment and those who read for up to 30 minutes per day. It also revealed that children who are the most engaged with literacy are three times more likely to have higher levels of mental wellbeing than children who are the least engaged. Tri golf tournament On Tuesday 4 June the year 5/6 tri golf tournament took place under the leadership of our tri golf activators from years 7, 8 and 9 who had been trained previously by Derbyshire Golf Officer, Alice Lowe. Alice was on hand to see how our sports leaders led the eight stations of activities. Schools taking part were Elton, Winster, All Saints, South Darley, Lea, Wessington and St Giles. The winners were Lea, runners up were Winster and in 3rd place was South Darley – well done to all!

Newsletter Cyclo cross event The year 5 and 6 cyclo cross event took place on 5 June at Whitworth Park, straight after the SSP finals. Highfields Cluster was represented by Lea, South Darley and All Saints. Well done to All Saints winning the event!
Primary sports evenings The summer block of primary sports evenings began this week. South Darley attended and were put in training for the forthcoming rounders event by Mr Molyneux and year 9 leader Courtney.
CPD for sports leaders Thursday 6 June was a busy CPD day of training for our sports leaders. During the morning England rounders coach, Helen Hawes, trained our sports leaders as officials ready for the upcoming key stage 2 event taking place on 21 June. The afternoon was with British Orienteering Chair, Judith Holt, and a team from Derwent Valley orienteers training our sports leaders ready for the key stage 2 completion on 14 June.

This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: Explore BBC Bitesize Careers resources
Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Newsletter Highfields School Uniform Code A strict uniform code for years 7 to 11 is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code. The uniform code below is designed to be clear. Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure.

Shoes should be black and polishable with no logos Plain black socks with trousers Plain black tights with skirts During snow and ice, students should wear footwear appropriate to the conditions.
No shoes with heels, logos/other colours/flashes appearing on the design, trainers, boots, ankle boots, canvas/fabric/suede shoes, slipon ballet shoes, flip flops, sandals or fashion shoes

No tight skirts, short skirts, fashion skirts, fashion trousers, skinny jeans, skinny trousers, low slung trousers, jeggings, tracksuit bottoms, chinos, combats, cords, leggings or denim of any colour, no detail on skirts or trousers such as zips, metal studs or buckles.

A single sleeper/stud in each ear and a watch
No rings, pendants, necklaces, non-school badges, festival wrist bands, ordinary wrist bands, charity wrist bands (unless sanctioned by school), facial jewellery or other body jewellery (eg nose studs, belly button piercings), tattoos (tattoos are not legally allowed until 18 years of age)
Warm weather resistant winter coat suitable for outdoor use
No leather jackets, denim jackets, hoodies (including plain black hoodies) or plain black cardigans. These items are not waterproof and will not be accepted as outdoor wear. School jumpers should be worn for warmth
Outdoor wear must be removed upon entry to the school building and stored in lockers Outdoor wear must not be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Hairstyles:
Hair should be of natural colour and not extreme in terms of style or cut Plain hair bands can be worn - no flowers or bows
Belts:
Plain black belts (without studs) can be worn to hold up trousers and not for decoration
Scarves:
Scarves should never be worn in classrooms or during lessons
Make-up:
Heavy make-up is not acceptable in school (no mascara, blusher, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick or fake tan) No nail varnish, false nails or nail extensions are allowed Students will be issued with appropriate ‘wipes’ in order to remove heavy make-up or nail varnish
Bags:
Bags should be of a suitable size to accommodate A4 sized books, folders and other equipment
Equipment:
All students are expected to have pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and any subject specific equipment every day
Please note: Many department stores also stock the items we list as non-logo wear. Please be cautious when purchasing uniform from retailers, as many advertise and sell fashion trousers/skirts as school uniform, but not all would comply with Highfields uniform code. If you require advice before making a purchase, please contact school. Where a term is disputed (e.g. ‘skinny’ or ‘short’) a senior leader will decide whether or not clothing reflects uniform code. Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home.
