Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Challenge Day – Friday 20 July 2018

Changes to the arrangements of the school day As you are aware, we are organising an end of year ‘Challenge Day’ on the last day of term following the successes of previous years.

1. School timetable for Friday 20 July: The event will take place at our Lumsdale site to allow all students to participate in activities in their House groups. We are amending the timetable for the school day to allow school to close at 1.45pm for the start of the summer holiday to enable the majority of school buses to collect students early.

This year’s theme will be based around ‘HMS Highfields’ and all students and staff are invited to dress up in costume for the day following this theme. Students will be asked to pay £1 in order to have an HMS Highfields ‘activity’ pass. This pass will allow them to have access to all the various activities available on the 2018 Challenge Day. The usual timetable of lessons will be suspended and students will be involved in a day of individual and team ‘challenges’, Year group celebrations and awards, with a range of activities based around the theme of the day. Activities will be based in classrooms and on the field. In the event of bad weather, the event will transfer inside. The day will end with awards from the challenges being presented.

2. Catering arrangements: A range of light refreshments and snacks will be available throughout the morning from the tuck shop and ice-cream stall. Students will need to bring money with them if they wish to purchase these items.

Burgers, sausage and chips will be served for lunch in the canteen and students can pay via the cashless catering system as normal. Students who have free school meals must inform either Mrs Green (Starkholmes) or Mr Tidmarsh (Lumsdale) by Thursday 12 July if they would like a sandwich lunch to be provided.

3. School transport Start of school arrangements - We have made arrangements with the bus companies to ensure students who normally catch school transport are taken directly to Lumsdale for the start of the day. Students from Starkholmes who do not usually catch a bus will need to make their own transport arrangements to Lumsdale as there will be no bus service available from the Starkholmes site.

End of school arrangements - Contract buses (G&J Holmes, Slacks and Andrews buses) will be able to collect between 1.45pm-2pm.

Unfortunately, three of the local service buses (Littles, Your Bus and Hulleys local service bus) are unable to amend their timetable to collect students early. Students who usually catch these service buses will need to make their own arrangements.

Should these amended arrangements cause you childcare issues, please contact the school and we will look at providing supervision up until 3.30pm.

Newsletter Invitation to parents/carers of students with SEND: SEND Coffee Morning – Tuesday 26 June 2018 from 9.30am at Lumsdale We would like to invite parents/carers of SEND students to our SEND coffee morning between 9.30am – 10.30am on Tuesday 26 June at Upper School site, where we will discuss Learning Support and SEND provision.

You are welcome to pop in for coffee and bring along your ideas and suggestions. If you are interested in attending, please contact the school reception staff to confirm your attendance on 01629 581888.

Newsletter School News Billy Elliot Workshop with James Lomas On Wednesday 20 June, James Lomas, a West End and Olivier award winning actor, visited Highfields to inspire students across all 3 key stages. James Lomas, who played Billy in 2005, is an actor and professional performer, now specialising in high quality workshops in musical theatre. He has worked in the West End in many shows for thirteen years and became the youngest actor to receive a ‘Laurence Olivier Award’ for Best Actor for his role as the original ‘Billy’ in Billy Elliot the Musical. His other credits include Dirty Dancing, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita and Starlight Express.

James ran two workshops, each two hours long for 25 students.

Each workshop included an acting section with a piece of script taken from the show, learning original choreography from the show and a performance of the song “Electricity” written by Elton John. James also brought in his special diaries/photos/awards (Laurence Olivier Award, Variety Club Award) and original clothing and costumes from the show. James answered many questions from inspired students.

He told stories about his time spent with Elton John, Ken Dodd, David Beckham, David Walliams and many other celebrity professionals.

Students thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the workshops and were thrilled to get selfies with James at the end. He was truly inspiring for all students, particularly those applying for scholarships at London Theatre Schools in the near future.

Skye exclaimed: 'This workshop was amazing!' and Ben said: 'I loved it! He's done so many great things and he's so inspiring'.

Miss Bonsall, Head of Drama and Theatre, said "It was so fantastic to have a working professional in school who had so much experience at such a young age. James had his first audition at 13 with very little experience in Dance, knowing how much he wanted to be an actor. I think this opened students’ eyes to the entire performance industry, not just their chosen specialism.

Seeing the children so enthusiastic is always fantastic, but this was another level because of his status in the industry and how relatable he is being from Sheffield and being a professional actor from the age of 14. I was so proud of how focused and energised students were and how much they wanted to learn and engage."

Newsletter Sports Leaders News SSP Kwik Cricket Finals On Monday 18 June Year 12 students Harry and Jack and Year 9 students George and Reuben were involved in the SSP Kwik Cricket finals held at Darley Dale Cricket Club for Years 5 and 6 - the quartet did a fabulous job in officiating.

2018 Top Link Festival On Tuesday 19 June 30 Highfields Sports Leadership Academy students led eight sporting activities for the whole of Darley Dale Primary School for the 2018 Top Link Festival – they all did a brilliant job.

Darley Dale Cricket Club Event 30 Key Stage 3 girls attended Darley Dale Cricket Club on Wednesday 20 June for the annual girls’ cricket event led by cricket coach Stuart Rudkin. The girls were highly motivated and developed their batting, bowling, wicketkeeping and fielding skills in the morning, before putting them into action in a game in the afternoon.

Primary Sports Evening South Darley were in attendance after school for the primary sports evening led by Mr Molyneux on 20 June.

Active Health Ambassadors Our Active Health Ambassadors were at All Saints Primary School on Wednesday delivering fun activities to the girls group after school.

2018 Infant Sports Day On Friday 22 June our PE Apprentices were at All Saints school leading the 2018 Infant Sports Day - they all did a great job.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.

Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department.

Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
