Newsletter Message from the headteacher People often ask me about climate change and our school response. Like many organisations we are trying to adapt our processes and practices to reflect a growing concern over sustainability. I thought it might be useful to outline a few of the things we are doing to try and be responsible. We have chosen a carbon neutral company for our reprographic services (Ricoh). They have a carbon neutral plant in the Midlands which we are hoping to visit quite soon. We are obviously trying to reduce copying and have strict controls in place for printing and copying facilities. This is not always popular with all staff but, of course, they understand the importance of sustainability. We have renewed our catering contract with DCC partly because they were able to convince us that they have a growing awareness of their responsibility to source their supplies mindfully. DCC catering have also offered to work with our gardening club to develop vegetable plots on site. Furthermore, we are hoping to work with the Bee Association on Starkholmes site. We know we have a problem with plastic bottles - too many students buy a new one every day. We want to provide more drinking water points where students can refill containers, but we are being hampered by a problematic water supply (this is to do with ‘rising mains’ and the inappropriateness of many water sources in the school, especially on Lumsdale site). For some time we have been working with an IT provider which recycles equipment when it becomes obsolete. We are doing lots besides, but all of these developments are affected by the fact that we, like most secondary schools, have significant financial challenges to face. I am far from expert in this field. If you are a friend of the school who has expertise in these areas and can advise governors and leaders on how we might reduce further our carbon footprint we would be very interested to hear from you. This week in lessons I happened across a small BTEC food group where a student offered me a muffin from the batch she was baking. True to her word she came to find me on duty after school and dug around in her bag until she produced said muffin. Much to her disappointment it had collapsed slightly. She looked crestfallen and said, ‘do you still want it?’ I said that of course I did and took it proudly to show it off as we had a whole staff meeting planned. And in an A level biology lesson students were conducting an experiment with this improvised contraption which is designed to test skin sensitivity. I told them my children had suggested I get a tattoo to celebrate my 50th birthday and asked which area would be least painful. They appeared to be so appalled that someone as uncool as me might get a tattoo that they never really got around to answering the question. Have a lovely half term.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Sports day arrangements – Wednesday 26 June 2019 Our annual House sports day for all students in years 7, 8, and 9 will take place on Wednesday 26 June at Lumsdale (upper school site). Year 7 and 8 students will join year 9 students at Lumsdale. The Starkholmes site will be closed. Only year 7, 8, 9 and 12 students will be in school on Wednesday 26 June. Year 10 students are on work experience, year 11 and 13 students are not be involved in the sports day and year 12 students will continue with their normal timetabled lessons during the day. Arrangements have been made with the bus companies to ensure students who normally catch school transport are taken directly to Lumsdale for the start of the day and returned home at the end of the school day as usual. Students from Starkholmes who do not usually catch a bus will need to make their own transport arrangements to Lumsdale as there will be no bus service available from the Starkholmes site. Year 7 and 8 students will be met at the front of school (Lumsdale) from 8.20am and taken to their allocated form room for the day. Students are asked to arrive at Lumsdale dressed in their PE kit with their House colour top and to bring with them a packed lunch, water bottle and appropriate snacks for break, as no food will be served during the day. Students who have free school meals should have already informed their Pastoral Manager (Mrs Green or Mr Tidmarsh) by Friday 21 June if they would like a sandwich lunch to be provided. Please ensure your child brings appropriate clothing for the weather, ie waterproof clothing, hat, sun cream etc depending on the forecast for the day. Students do not need to bring books, pens or planners on the day. Usual lessons will be replaced with a range of activities including traditional sporting events and house based competitions. The sports day programme will end at approximately 3.15pm. All students will return to their form base before leaving school to walk or catch buses home. Please agree with your child whether they will walk home, catch school transport, catch a service bus or wait for you to collect them from the Lumsdale site. If you have any concerns about this, please telephone school and speak to your child’s Head of Year or Pastoral Manager. We are all looking forward to this opportunity for our students to participate in their houses in a variety of sporting events. Based on the weather forecast for Wednesday we will make a decision on Tuesday afternoon if we feel there may be a need to cancel the event. We will inform you via email in the event of cancellation. The bus companies will also be informed and students in years 7 and 8 will be taken to the Starkholmes site and lessons will be as normal. If the weather deteriorates during the day and we decide to abandon the event, students will return to their form room on the Lumsdale site for planned activities and will be supervised until 3.30pm.

Newsletter School news Year 8’s visit Carsington Water Chole (year 8)
The Carsington Water trip was a great experience, getting out of school and doing something different. While on the trip we did a few field sketches, tables and even a quiz! Going on the Carsington trip helped massively with our learning and boosting how confident we are within the topic we are currently studying. We did a variety of tasks by evaluating every part of Carsington from Millifields car park, the bird hide, the visitor centre and stone island. We even got to do some bird watching which was an extremely enjoyable experience. I left Carsington knowing more about the site than when I came and even seeing parts of Carsington I hadn’t seen before - I had never seen the bird hide before the trip. Overall the trip was absolutely amazing.

Tri golf activator award On Friday 17 May the tri golf activator award was delivered to our year 7, 8 and 9 sports leaders by Alice Low of Derbyshire Golf. The sports leaders involved will be on duty for the year 5 and 6 tournament to be held on Tuesday 4 June from 1-3pm at Lumsdale. The young leaders were taught how to coach and deliver the eight stations involved in the tournament. The primary students involved in the event have been receiving coaching from Matlock Golf Club’s professionals over the last two months to train for the tournament. This has been possible due to our partnership with the golf club and the British Golf Foundation. We have been fortunate enough to have received funding for this over the last eight years.
Kwik cricket tournament The year 5 and 6 kwik cricket tournament took place on Tuesday 21 May at Darley Dale Cricket Club – a fantastic sunny day at the cricket. The event had 68 students representing the following teams: All Saints Spinners All Saints Howzatts Lea Yorkers Lea Beamers Darley Dale Elton St Joseph’s Maidens St Joseph’s Wickets

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.
Vacancy We are looking to advertise for bar staff, service staff and kitchen assistants. We are a catering company based in Darley Dale called Coghlans, operating from Stancliffe Hall. We provide training, uniform and staff food is provided on shift. We largely cater for weddings so staff can expect regular work on a weekend as well as extra shifts through the week at our pop up restaurant should they want more hours – as such work is quite flexible. Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
