Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Dear Parents and Carers It has been a very busy start to the final half term of the year, with much to still look forward to. Our GCSE and A level students are in the final stages of their exams. Indeed many students have finished, and we are celebrating the many and varied successes of the last five years with our Year 11 students in their final assembly today. The conduct of students during exams has been exemplary and they deserve every success. Our Year 10 students embark on work experience from 25 June, with a preparation day taking place in school next Friday, 22 June. Sports Day for Years 7-9 takes place, weather permitting, at our Lumsdale site on Thursday 28 June. On Wednesday 4 July we host our new Year 7 (current Year 6s) in school for the first time as a full year group. They have the run of Starkholmes as Year 7 go on their sponsored walk and Year 8 go on their transition day to Lumsdale. Meanwhile Year 9 will develop their enterprise skills through a specially prepared activity on that day. Our School Musical, Footloose promises to be a fantastic treat. It runs from Wednesday 11 July to Saturday 14 July. Performances include a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are now selling fast. We are planning to finish the year on Friday 20 July by continuing our recent tradition of Challenge Days - further details to follow. All the best to you and all our students over the remainder of the summer term.
Sports Day Arrangements for Years 7, 8, 9 and 12 – 28 June 2018 Our annual House Sports Day for all students in Years 7, 8, and 9 will take place on Thursday 28 June at Lumsdale (Upper School site). Year 7 and 8 students will join Year 9 students at Lumsdale. The Starkholmes site will be closed. Only Year 7, 8, 9 and 12 students will be in school on Thursday 28 June. Year 10 students are on work experience and Year 11 and 13 students will not be involved in the sports day and Year 12 students will continue with their normal timetabled lessons during the day. Arrangements have been made with the bus companies to ensure students who normally catch school transport are taken directly to Lumsdale for the start of the day and returned home at the end of the school day as usual. Students from Starkholmes who do not usually catch a bus will need to make their own transport arrangements to Lumsdale as there will be no bus service available from the Starkholmes site. Year 7 and 8 students will be met at the front of school (Lumsdale) from 8.20am and taken to their allocated form room for the day. Students are asked to arrive at Lumsdale dressed in their PE kit with House colour top and to bring with them a packed lunch, water bottle and appropriate snacks for break, as no food will be served during the day. Newsletter already informed their Pastoral Manager (Mrs Green or Mr Tidmarsh) if they would like a sandwich lunch to be provided, but if not they need to do so by Friday 22 June. Please ensure your child brings appropriate clothing for the weather, ie waterproof clothing, hat, sun cream etc depending on the forecast for the day. Students do not need to bring books, pens or planners on the day. Usual lessons will be replaced with a range of activities including traditional sporting events and house based competitions. The Sports Day programme will end at approximately 3.15pm. All students will return to their form base before leaving school to walk or catch buses home. Please agree with your child whether they will walk home, catch school transport, catch a service bus or wait for you to collect them from the Lumsdale site. If you have any concerns about this, please telephone school and speak to your child’s Head of Year or Pastoral Manager. We are all looking forward to this opportunity for our students to participate in their houses in a variety of sporting events. Based on the weather forecast for Thursday we will make a decision on Wednesday afternoon if we feel there may be a need to cancel the event. We will inform you via email in the event of cancellation. The bus companies will also be informed and students in Years 7 and 8 will be taken to the Starkholmes site and lessons will be as normal. If the weather deteriorates during the day and we decide to abandon the event, students will return to their form room on the Lumsdale site for planned activities and will be supervised until 3.30pm.
Year 11 Prom – Final details and exam results As you will already be aware, the Year 11 Prom will take place on Thursday 28 June 2018 at Alfreton Hall in Alfreton, to celebrate the hard work and effort shown by our students during their time at Highfields. The ticket price includes a welcome drink, meal, disco and fireworks at the venue and transport to and from the venue. All students must travel to and from the venue on the coaches provided. Coaches will leave Lumsdale at 1830 and return at 2300. A photographer will be present during the evening and your child will be able to purchase full colour prints, presented in a card mount, on the night (please see the letter issued to students regarding photography). Soft drinks may also be purchased at the venue, so please ensure your child takes enough money to cover these extras. Please note that there will be a strict no alcohol and no smoking policy for students at this event. This includes the use of e-cigarettes. Students must not bring e-cigarettes with them on the evening. If any student is suspected of consuming alcohol, or any other substance, you will be required to come and collect them immediately. Similarly, you will be required to collect your child if their behaviour is a cause for concern at any point during the evening. Refunds will not be given in either case. In the event we find it necessary to exclude a student from this event, our decision will be final and non-negotiable. Along with your child’s teachers, I look forward to celebrating this wonderful occasion with your child.

Students can collect their results from the Wheeldon Hall between 0830 and 1100. They can send someone else to collect them as long as they have a letter signed by the student We can post the results on 23 August (so they will arrive with you on 24 August at the earliest) if the student hands in a stamped addressed envelope to the front office We can email the results to a student on the afternoon of 23 August, if the student lets Miss Gresswell or Miss Dence know the email address they want them sending to Do NOT phone school for results – we cannot give them out over the telephone

Newsletter Highfields Governors’ Annual Report to Parents/Carers and Staff 2017-18 Introduction This report on the activities of Highfields’ Governing Body comes at a time of significant transition in the development of the school. Following Eddie Wilkes’ departure as Headteacher in 2016, Governors invited Deputy Heads, Peter Cole and Ben Riggott to act as Co-Headteachers from September 2016. Their role was to head a new Senior Leadership Team to take the school forward, including leading the school through another successful Ofsted visit in May 2017 and a further restructuring of the school staff as a result of a predicted budget deficit, and managing changes to curriculum, exams and assessment. Peter and Ben’s second year in this interim arrangement has nearly come to an end and Governors wish to thank them, their Senior Leadership Team and indeed all staff – teaching and support - for their continued hard work and commitment to school improvement and the well-being of all students and staff in the school. Governors are proud to be involved with a ‘community’ school and remain committed to seeing this as a prime focus of our activity. The role of parents, carers and other members of our local community in supporting young people’s learning and development is central to the school’s success. The next phase will see our new Headteacher, Andrew Marsh, in place from September 2018. Andrew comes to us from Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School and we are sure you will join us in welcoming him to Highfields and offering our full support in what continues to be a challenging educational environment. From September Peter Cole will continue as Deputy Head and Ben Riggott is going to act for the autumn term as Interim Headteacher at Parkside School, Chesterfield, returning to Highfields as Deputy Head in January 2018. We welcome Matt Hodkin as our new Assistant Headteacher – Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and Director of Inclusion, and thank Peter Cole, Claire Bethell and their colleagues for their hard work in this important area of the school’s work during the past year.
Governor responsibilities In the school’s weekly newsletter, you can see the list of the parents, staff and other friends of the school who make up the school’s Governing Body. It is our job to:
set the vision and strategic direction of the school hold the Headteacher to account for the school's educational performance ensure financial resources are well spent
The work done by Governors’ Committees As Governors we are proud of being associated with such a successful, vibrant and friendly school which is at the heart of the local community. Throughout the school, teaching and support staff have gone to great lengths to know pupils well, to help them get the most out of their time at school. This approach has been the top priority in the school plan during the past year. Governor Committees are responsible for reviewing, ratifying and ensuring the implementation of school policies and this year has seen many revisions, including Special Educational Needs, Bullying, and Personal, Social and Health Education. The Teaching and Learning Committee (Chair Ranald Macdonald) has the aim of nurturing great teaching in the school, and increasing understanding of best practice to motivate and engage

students. Last year notable academic successes were achieved by the Sixth Form and Year 11, and the committee received reports on staff professional development which aimed to transfer good practice across different subjects. It monitored results in different subjects, and any areas of weakness were taken up through the Co-Headteachers’ performance management process. Governors remain fully committed to ensuring that the school continues to offer pupils a wide range of subjects, including foreign languages, the arts, music, food technology and other subjects which have been given less weight nationally. Achieving this on an increasingly tight budget is a testament to the hard work and attention to detail made by Finance and Resources Committee (Chair Julie Lane) and associated staff. Governors place a very high value on Highfields national standing in the Sports Leader scheme, and other sporting achievements; engagement in external competitions and visits; and involvement in the local community. We are keen to encourage all activities which involve teamwork, which is such a crucial aspect when pupils start paid work. The Student and Community Links Committee (Chair Helen Crane) has an emphasis on monitoring student well-being and has picked up issues which need attention. The rise of social media, changes in curriculum, the reduced emphasis on work-related subjects nationally have combined to increase the pressure felt by some teenagers. Governors have noted the reduction in agencies outside school who can help; we act as a sounding board to the Senior Leadership Team who manage the effect which these pressures create in school. We are living through a period of policy and financial uncertainty and the Full Governors’ Committee is looking to the future and the various options that will enable the school to provide an excellent learning and social experience for our students. We will keep you fully informed and consult with you as we move forward with our planning.

A recent vacancy for a new Parent Governor has been filled by David Matthews, who has children in Years 10 and 8. After many years as a Governor and then Associate Member, Sandy Doull felt it was time to stand down, though he continues to offer his support to the school. Helen Crane and Ranald Macdonald continued as Co-Chairs during the year, with Paul Steeples as Vice-Chair. This group meets regularly with the Co-Headteachers to discuss important issues and share information. We also welcomed Lex Crossett who took up the post of Clerk to Governors.

Postscript: A personal note from Ranald Macdonald I have decided to stand down as a Governor, and hence as Co-Chair of Governors, from the end of June to give myself and my wife, Viv, more time to travel in our campervan. The role makes it difficult to travel in term time and we want to see more of the UK and Europe, going to orienteering events and folk festivals and cycling with our dog, Cassie (she has her own trailer!). I have been honoured to serve as a Governor at Highfields School and have been thrilled by the many performing arts, sporting and academic achievements and developments over the last few years. Viv and I have never ceased to be amazed by the quality of musicianship and performance that many of our students demonstrate. Just when we think we are losing a particularly talented group a new lot comes through. I have also valued my time working with Helen, other Governors, Peter and Ben and their colleagues on the Senior Leadership Team as well as all other staff and students I have met during my involvement with the school. I wish Andrew Marsh and all of you the best for the future and I expect to be seen at school performances and orienteering activities for some time to come. Highfields is a great school, with highly dedicated staff and many outstanding young people. I would like to hope I can continue to support you all, even if in some small ways, in the future.

Newsletter Sports Results Derbyshire Dales Cyclo-Cross Championships On Friday 8 June six of our lower site students went to Bakewell to compete in the Derbyshire Dales Cyclo-cross Championships. The weather was dreary but spirits were high, we competed in a speed trial and a relay race against two teams from Lady Manners School and one from Anthony Gell school. Highfields fought hard and finished second overall which was a great achievement. All students were a credit to the school once again.
Quad Kids Competition On Monday 11 June we competed against Tupton, Dronfield and Eckington schools in a Quad Kids Competition. This involved throwing a vortex, long jump, running 100m and 800m. As a school, our Year 7 students competed really well finishing second overall. Individually Lucy finished second overall in the girls’ competition - well done!
Cricket win against Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School The Year 7 and 8 teams travelled to Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School for their first cricket match of the season. Both teams were a credit to the school and there was some excellent cricket played. The Year 7 team won in an enthralling game - we batted first notching up 83 runs, then managed to get Queen Elizabeth’s out for 61, winning the game. The Year 8 team also played some good cricket in a game that was a first competitive cricket match for four of our students - we scored 33 runs but conceded far more. An excellent evening of cricket, well done!

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Primary School Orienteering On Tuesday 12 June Primary School Orienteering took place. This was an excellent event as ever, set up by British Orienteering and assisted by the Highfields Sports Leaders.
SSP Quad Kid Finals On Wednesday 13 June All Saints and South Darley schools represented Highfields at the School Sports Partnership Quad Kids finals held at Lady Manners School.
Girls Active Project Also on Wednesday, Year 9 leaders ran week 3 of the Girls Active Project at All Saints school.
South Peak Sports Event On Thursday 14 June PE Apprentice, Miss Elliott, supported the annual South Peak Sports Eveng 2018 at Darley Dale.
Key Stage 2 Rounders Event On Friday 15 June the KS2 Rounders Event 2018 took place at Lumsdale officiated by the Sports Leaders who had been ably trained by Rounders England coach Helen Hawes.

This week’s maths quiz is … Last week, Tom and Sophie bought some stamps for their collections. Each stamp Tom bought cost him £1.10, whilst Sophie paid 70p for each of her stamps. Between them they spent exactly £10. How many stamps did they buy in total?
Solution:

Last week’s maths quiz answer … 'Saturn' chocolate bars are packed either in boxes of 5 or boxes of 12. What is the smallest number of full boxes required to pack exactly 2005 'Saturn' bars?
Solution: 2005/12 = 167 remainder 1. So, if 167 of the larger boxes are used 1 bar will remain. It follows that if 166 larger boxes are used there will13 bars left (not a mulitple of 5). However, if 165 of the larger boxes are used this will leave 25 bars, which can be packed into 5 of the smaller boxes. Total number of boxes is 165 + 5 = 170.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
