Newsletter Message from the headteacher A school is a place of learning. Sometimes this simple fact gets lost because we are now expected to fulfil many roles. On Tuesday the breadth of learning going on really came home to me. In the morning I was in a Y8 lesson where a specially trained teaching assistant was providing extra support for some students with their maths. She was very skilled and I liked the way that she didn’t intervene too early when students were taking a moment to process something. For example, one young man had ‘brain freeze’ when confronting the question ‘if 10% of a number is 5, then what will 30% of the same number be?’ The teacher remained calm while the young man stared at the board, waiting for an answer to come to him. The girl sitting next to me was practically bursting because she knew the answer and couldn’t wait to share it. After several tries the boy finally found the answer he was looking for. Only about an hour later I was invited to meet three sixth formers who had been identified as producing exceptional Extended Projects (students complete these projects on top of their normal studies in order to explore an area of personal interest). The first student I spoke to, a mathematician, had written his project about his ‘hobby’ which is exploring lateral neural pathway manipulation networks (see below). Although he and the Y8 I had met earlier were coming at their maths at a slightly different level, both of them were operating right at the edge of their challenge ‘envelope’ which is always when great things happen. The other two boys in this group, by the way, had used their projects to explore ‘Nietzsche’s influence on right wing political groups’ and ‘regulation and legislation around surveillance’. I had read the projects in advance and had prepared some questions but still it was difficult to keep up with the discussion, so esoteric and complex was its subject matter. I look forward to Friday lunchtimes because I usually end up getting strangled by a parent called Mr Taylor. This is because, being the over-enthusiastic person I am, I allow myself to get caught up in self-defence training which we are offering to a group of students training to take on leadership responsibilities next year. Mr Taylor is a Jiu Jitsu champion and self defence expert and he is building students’ confidence by showing them ways in which they can keep themselves safe should anyone ever grab hold of them. Highfields students have an understated sense of humour and one of the students came in a couple of minutes late to find me face down on the floor with Mr Taylor’s knee in my back (rest assured Mr Taylor was illustrating a point and will NOT train our students in how to do this particular move). Nonplussed, the student turned to her friend and said, ‘well that’s something you don’t see every day’. I must go now because I have just received an intriguing email whose subject title is ‘risk assessment for a dog in school musical’. Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices National student action on climate change – Friday 24 May We are advised that further national student action on climate change is planned for Friday 24 May, following the previous action in recent months. As a school we continue to work hard to find a balance between encouraging our students to care about the environment, to keep them safe and to ensure that learning in all its senses drives what we do. You will be aware that on 15 March we held student led events in school to raise awareness of climate change and enable students with genuine interests in this issue to express their views in a mature and responsible way. We were very pleased with their response. We are not planning a similar event on 24 May, as students in years 11 and 13 have vital public exams, with students in most other year groups having important internal exams in the weeks following half term. It is clearly crucial that any student with an exam attends it and extremely important that all other students are in school and engaging with planned learning. However, if as a family you decide that you do not want your child to attend school on Friday 24 May so that they can attend a climate change protest, you should provide parental permission in writing to the pastoral contacts below by Wednesday 22 May at the latest. You should state you give permission for your child/ren to miss school and include the activities they will be taking part in to draw attention to climate change. All absences to attend a climate change protest will be recorded as unauthorised absences. Clearly, we would only expect parents/carers to grant this kind of permission if they had planned a visit to a protest or similar. In all other cases students should come into school and stay in school. Any student who leaves site during the school day without permission will be truanting and compromising their own safety. European elections - reduced canteen service for years 9-13 at Lumsdale on 23 May 2019 The Wheeldon Hall at Lumsdale will be used as a Polling Station on Thursday 23 May and out of use during the day. Catering arrangements for students in years 9 to 13 will be limited and a reduced menu of hot/cold take way foods will be offered in the sixth form canteen on Thursday. If students do not wish to use the reduced service option on 23 May, they will be advised to bring a packed lunch.

Newsletter School news Book fair brings free books for the school library Mrs Robinson
Students enjoyed browsing the shelves and buying books at the Scholastic Book Fair held at lower school this week. The pop-up bookshop was extremely popular at breaks and lunchtimes. Many students bought books or asked if copies could be purchased for the school library. In an area of the country where we have very few bookshops, it was a great opportunity for the students to discover new authors and browse some of the very latest titles. Year 8 student library assistants helped to run the stall and really enjoyed the experience of serving customers and managing a real bookshop. The fair created a tremendous buzz about reading throughout the school. In total students and staff spent just over ÂŁ600 at the Book Fair, and in return the school received ÂŁ300 of vouchers from Scholastic Books to spend on new books for the library. The books we have purchased, including many of the most popular titles at the fair, will be available to borrow from the school library very soon. Thank you to everyone who helped us to stock the library with so many fantastic new books.

Lower school tennis tournament The lower school tennis tournament has been running on Wednesday lunchtimes with our PE apprentice, Mr Molyneux with some fabulous play. This is the ‘Road to Wimbledon’ national event that Highfields School are involved in. The ‘Road to Wimbledon’ 14U tournament is the UK’s largest junior competition with more than 7,000 girls and boys from over 750 clubs, parks and schools competing to qualify for the national finals held at Wimbledon in August. Congratulations to the winner of the boys’ event, Louis (year 7), beating Chris in the final and Leoni (year 7) beating Isla in the girls’ final. Well done to all who took part.
PE apprentice update On Tuesday 14 May Mrs Allen visited PE apprentice, Mr Hill, at Carsington and Hopton primary school.

Newsletter Quicksticks hockey The SSP quicksticks hockey competition for years 3 and 4 took place on Wednesday 15 May. Quicksticks is designed to introduce young people to the game of hockey. It is 4-a-side, can be played on any surface and uses a larger, lighter and safer ball. It is a fun, fast, safe and exciting game that has been designed so that anyone can deliver the game, regardless of previous hockey experience. Our Highfields cluster was represented by All Saints, Lea and South Darley. Well done to All Saints who won the championship and then progressed to premiership finishing fourth.
SSCO School Games planning On Thursday 16 May Mrs Allen attended the 2019/2020 planning meeting of School Sports Co-ordinators at Anthony Gell School. The new School Games formats were discussed and the programme set for the new academic year.
Derbyshire Golf Today, Friday 17 May, Alice Lowe, Derbyshire Golf development officer came to Highfields to train our sports leaders as tri golf activators – further information in next week’s newsletter.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

Newsletter School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
