Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices ACTION REQUIRED - GDPR Changes to Data Protection Law GDPR Consent Forms for Photography and Video Before the holiday students were given consent forms to bring home re-seeking consent by 8 June for using photographs or videos of your child on our website, internal displays, media, newsletter or other school materials. Thank you to parents/carers who have already returned the forms. If you haven’t yet completed and returned a form, please can you do so as a matter of urgency. Until we have received signed consent we will no longer be able to publish photographs of students in the areas mentioned above. We feel strongly that it is important that we are able to recognise and celebrate our students’ participation and achievement in the wide range of activities they are involved in, in the school. Clearly photos and videos are important to this so we would be extremely grateful if you could return the consent forms by the deadline above. Year 7 Sponsored Walk – 4 July 2018 Hopefully you are all aware of the upcoming Sponsored Walk for all Year 7 students on Wednesday 4 July. We see this as a key event in students’ first year at Highfields. It helps them to have a collective goal as a year group, as well as raising vital funds for notable charities. Students select one local, one national and one international charity to support. This year, students have chosen Ashgate Hospice, the RSPCA and Water Aid. We appreciate that families already support many good causes, but we really would appreciate your support in raising as much as possible to help these worthwhile causes. To this end, we ask that all sponsor money is brought into school by Monday 16 July. This will enable us to contact the charities before we break up for the summer. Often, the charities like to visit the students during the autumn term, to show them what their money has enabled the charity to do. Again, we think this is important as it shows students what they can achieve collectively and what they can do to help others. Thank you for your continued support. Year 8 & Year 9 Girls – HPV Vaccinations on 14 June A reminder that the Immunisation Nursing Team will be offering Year 8 and Year 9 girls the Human Papillomavirus Vaccination (HPV) in school on Thursday 14 June. This is two injections given on the same day. The HPV protects against cervical cancer and consists of two doses, the first in Year 8 and the second in Year 9. Year 9 students will receive their second dose if they were seen last year, however any Year 9 students who missed the vaccination last year can also be seen by the Nursing Team. The Nursing Team will make this decision. Further information about each vaccination can also be found on the following link: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/

In addition to this, some individual teachers may make arrangements with individual students / groups to support preparations for exams in subjects scheduled for later in the exam season. Newsletter School News The Book Bus “The Book Bus” recently paid a visit to Highfields and provided students with a unique opportunity to check out the latest teen and young adult titles and make recommendations for the school library. The distinctive, purple double-decker is a mobile book showroom for Browns Books for Students, the country’s leading school library supplier. Launched in May this year, the bus tours the country, visiting schools and colleges. The top deck has been transformed into a showroom with shelves of over 4,000 books, both fiction and non-fiction. “For anyone who loves reading this bus is a dream come true!” said Lower School Librarian, Mrs Robinson. “All students who boarded the bus were given a scanner so they could create their own ‘wish list’ of titles they’d like to see in the library. They really enjoyed browsing and their wish lists were extremely long! We’ll definitely be ordering some of their choices for the library very soon.” Around seventy students from both sites boarded the bus and plans are already underway for a longer visit next year so that more students can take part in the experience. “Any reader would feel at home there,” commented one enthusiastic Year 8 student. “It was incredibly good fun!”

Newsletter Author likes Book Club’s cake Year 9 Book Club students take turns baking and sharing a book-themed cake at book club throughout the year. This week they voted for their star bake of the year. There was a landslide win for a cake based on the Tom Gates books which was baked by Adam. A photograph of the spectacular cake was posted on Highfields’ library Twitter account and was liked by the author of the books, Liz Pichon, who thought the cake was fantastic.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Primary Schools Tri-Golf Primary Schools Tri-Golf took place on Monday 4 June. Schools taking part were Elton, South Darley, Tansley and Lea. The pupils from Elton won, Lea were 2nd, South Darley 3rd and Tansley 4th. Arron Holton from Derbyshire Golf attended to support the Highfields leaders and apprentices.
Quad Kids On Tuesday 5 June the Primary Quad Kids event was held. All Saints and South Darley will represent Highfields at the School Sports Partnership finals next Wednesday at Lady Manners.
Primary Evening of Sports The summer term Primary Evening of Sports started on Wednesday 6 June.
Girls Active Week 2 of the All Saints Primary School’s Girls Active event also took place on Wednesday 6 June.
Beyond the Baseline Tennis Project On Thursday 7 June Yasmin Clark, GB tennis player, was in school for the final session of the Beyond the Baseline Tennis Project. Our Key Stage 3 leaders led tennis sessions for All Saints Junior School.
SSP Cyclo-Cross Championship On Friday 8 June PE Apprentices ran the School Sports Partnership Cyclo-cross Championship at the Bakewell Showground for both Primary and Secondary schools.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
