Newsletter Message from the headteacher A slightly slimmed down newsletter this time because a four day week combined with a number of important visitors and a couple of late meetings has limited my time slightly. I’ve still managed to squeeze in a number of lesson visits. I loved being in a German lesson. The students were involved in preparing for their upcoming exam, but the teacher had chosen to base this exercise around VE Day (8 May). The teacher wanted students to know that if they were to learn German they should also learn about the German people. She then told a short story about her attempts to teach a group of German people about VE day. It was some time before she realised that the awkward silence was due to the fact that ‘victory’ is a relative term. It turns out that in Germany VE Day is referred to as ‘Liberation Day’ as Germans feel they were freed from the tyranny of Nazism. Elsewhere I was involved in an A level film studies lesson where the teacher was passionately predicting the mistakes that students would make in their first film on the course. Try as they might students could not convince the teacher that they would be the first class NOT to make the errors he predicted. Apparently, a key error for young film makers is to ignore the 180 degree rule around camera placement. I like it when a teacher manages to have high expectations at the same time as provoking laughter, fun and energy from students. Opposite is the mind map plan of one of the films (if it wins an Oscar I have told the students I want 10%). As I often do, I targeted cover lessons this morning. One lesson was covered due to the fact that its normal teacher had a baby just after midnight (congratulations to that member of staff!) and one was due to a member of staff being hospitalised. In one case the head of department had collapsed two groups into one (around 40 students) rather than have them taught by a non-specialist. In the other lesson we had managed to secure a specialist supply teacher and that lesson was going well. I know that cover and supply is always undesirable, but I do want you to know that we understand its impact and make every effort to avoid any negative impact of staff absence. In other good news I just found an Easter egg on top of a notice board which was previously unspotted by Mr Hodkin during last term’s hunt. I resolved to give it to Mr Hodkin, but it just sat there looking at me and eventually I caved in and ate it.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Year 7 and 8 summer exams Year 7 and 8 students have exams in normal lesson time and classrooms during June: Year 7 Year 8

These will be challenging assessments of what students have learned this year and provide a good foundation for the experience of more formal exams in years 10 and 11. Subject teachers have been asked to provide students with guidance about what the content they can expect to be tested on in the exam, and about how to revise. Revision will be set as homework in the weeks running up to the exams. We encourage students to revise in short bursts over a period of time, revisiting topics regularly. This helps to embed knowledge. Students are encouraged to use an active approach to revision. Methods such as summarising topics onto revision cards and making mind maps work well in many subjects. Talking revision through or being tested by an adult are excellent ways to make sure that learning sticks, so your help in that would be very valuable.
Year 9 mock exam timetable The year 9 mock exam timetable (below) has been given to students and can also be accessed on the school website. The English, maths and science exams will all take place in the sports hall to prepare students for what it is like when it comes to sitting their year 11 summer exams. Reminders: Students are expected to assemble in the coffee bar 15 minutes before each exam and are not required to go to registration when they have a morning exam. When each exam has finished students must go straight back to their normal lesson and all other lessons will take place as normal. Students are reminded to have the right equipment for each exam in a clear bag or pencil case. For science and maths paper 2 students are reminded to bring a calculator. Black pens must be used. Coats, bags, jackets, scarves, food or drink are not allowed in the examination hall. If students need to take water into the exam it must be in a clear, unlabelled plastic bottle.

Newsletter Year 11 booster sessions GCSE exams start on Monday 13 May. From Monday until half term year 11 students will either be in their standard timetabled lessons, an exam or a pre-exam booster session. These session are designed to give students some final exam preparation and guidance just before each paper. These sessions will continue after half term when standard timetabled lessons end. Newsletter School news Year 7 history projects Miss Morley
I wanted to share with you the amazing projects that year 7 students have produced for history. Students could do anything they wanted as long as it had a link to Henry the VIII. The level of effort that has gone into them is amazing - I had paintings, sculptures, display boards, cakes, newspaper style presentations, factbooks and a musical called 'Crown' that had been designed with costumes, story, set design and featured quotes. Several students wrote songs or raps, Henry was created in material and even decapitated head cakes had been baked. These students went over and above expectations and were clearly very proud to be able to show off their finished product.

Quad Kids Athletics On Friday 3 May the year 5-6 quad kids athletics competition took place at Lumsdale. Weather conditions were not ideal for athletics, but nevertheless the rain held off in the afternoon after a very wet morning. The 12 leaders from years 7, 8 and 9 were brilliant in their roles as timekeepers, long jump officials and vortex howler officials. Mr Edenbrow was the official starter with Mr Hill chief official on the timekeeping with Mr Molyneux and Mrs Turner on administration and results. I was kept busy as track official. There were 70 students in total taking part in teams from Wessington, Lea, South Darley and four teams from All Saints – Ennis, Thompson, Lewis and KJT.

There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

Newsletter School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
