Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Changes to Data Protection Law You may be aware that from 25 May, the rules around data protection are changing. The 'General Data Protection Regulation' (GDPR) will change how we can use your personal data and keep it safe, and will also strengthen your rights over your own data. The point of this is to make sure sensitive or private information about yourselves and your children stays safe. Whilst it is similar to the current Data Protection Act in many ways, there are a few differences, so we need to make a few changes at the school in order to ensure we remain compliant. One of these changes is that we have updated our Privacy Notice which is on our website (http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/pdfs/ParentPDFs/PrivacyNotice.pdf). As part of our work to comply with the GDPR, we must re-seek consent for using photographs or videos of your child on our website, internal displays, media, newsletter or other school materials. We have sent out consent forms with letters to parents/carers to complete and return by 8 June. Until we have received a signed consent form we will no longer be able to publish photographs of students in the areas mentioned above. We feel strongly that it is important that we are able to recognise and celebrate our students’ participation and achievement in the wide range of activities they are involved in, in the school. Clearly photos and videos are important to this so we would be extremely grateful if you could return the consent forms by the deadline above. Many thanks.
Year 8 & Year 9 Girls – HPV Vaccinations on 14 June A reminder that the Immunisation Nursing Team will be offering Year 8 and Year 9 girls the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in school on Thursday 14 June. This is two injections given on the same day. The HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and consists of two doses, the first in Year 8 and the second in Year 9. Year 9 students will receive their second dose if they were seen last year, however any Year 9 students who missed the vaccination last year can also be seen by the Nursing Team. In addition to this, some individual teachers may make arrangements with individual students / groups to support preparations for exams in subjects scheduled for later in the exam season. Newsletter School News Award-winning children’s author, Ali Sparkes, visits Highfields Year 8 students spent an inspirational day with best-selling children’s author, Ali Sparkes, earlier this term. Funded through support from the school’s PTFA and local Matlock company, Twigg’s, the “meet the author” event was a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn from one of the country’s most successful writers of fiction for young people. Ali entertained students with readings from her most recent novel “Night Speakers” and shared her experiences of being a writer. She revealed that success did not come quickly or easily and that perseverance is essential if you want to get your writing published. Every Year 8 student attended a writing workshop with Ali where she shared her hints and tips for creating a gripping storyline. “Ali really fired the students’ imagination,” said Librarian, Mrs Robinson, “and made them realise that inspiration for a great story is literally all around them. They really enjoyed the sessions and Ali continues to be one of the most popular authors at Lower School Library.”

On Friday 18 May Sports Leaders took part in tri-golf training.
Validation Visit
Also on Friday, Jill Eaton, Chief Executive Officer of Sporting Futures visited PE Apprentices for a final validation visit of 2018.
Kwik Cricket
On Tuesday 22 May Highfields Cluster Kwik Cricket competition was held at Darley Dale Cricket Club. Eight primary schools took part and 21 of our Sports Leaders officiated - it was a great day. St Joseph’s Primary School won with Lea Primary as runners up and South Darley Primary taking the Bronze medal.
Bunting Cup
On Thursday 24 May the Bunting Cup Football competition was held at Cavendish Fields – again, excellent officiating by our Sports Leaders.
Voice of Sport
On Friday the Voice of Sport Meeting took place for May.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
