It was a game of three halves or three x20 minutes. In the first 20 minutes Lady Manners fielded their well drilled, 1st XV which comprises of mainly Year 13 Sixth Form boys, who have played together for a number of years. Highfields conceded an early try, but fought back well with some brilliant defensive play and just conceded a second try in the dying seconds of the first section of play. Highfields were on them from the off in the second third and despite driving wind and rain, maintained good shape which allowed Sam Ball of Year 11 to score a great try for Highfields. Highfields remained on the offensive, but Lady Manners broke through to score once more. By the final third Highfields were still up for it, but with few substitutions possible they faced a fresh Year 11 team from Lady Manners. Some of the Year 11 lads play together at Matlock Rugby Club, but as school honour was at stake, no quarter was given and some crunching tackles and excellent work from both sides meant that neither side conceded a try.

Newsletter Our captain, Mark was very pleased with the final score of 15 to 5 as it was the best result in this local derby for a number of years. Thanks go also to Dave Ball from Matlock Rugby Club for his support during the match. We have been asked to arrange another fixture against Lady Manners later in the season. Next game is on Wednesday 20 September - Good luck, lads!
Football results - 13 September 2017 On Wednesday 13 September the Year 7 and first team boys played away at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. The Year 7 played three development matches winning one 9-2 and losing the other two to a narrow margin. An excellent start to their Highfields's sporting career - well done boys!
Sixth Form Match Report by Evan Richardson 13CWS Highfields Sixth Form football team coasted past Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School on Wednesday evening, recording a 3-1 victory. A shaky start saw Highfields concede a sloppy goal after 20 minutes when the ball was crossed in as a result of some lack lustre defending. However, it didn’t take long for Highfields to reply with a goal of their own after Josh Insley put in a delightful ball for Jack Rose to finish on second attempt. During the second half it was much simpler for Highfields as they were never really tested. Jack Rose doubled his tally after a searching ball from Jack Batty at left back. A third goal was later added following good work down the left from Jack Rose, drilling the ball in for a Queen Elizabeth’s defender to turn it past his own keeper. Overall it was a comfortable victory with Highfields never really being forced into second gear.
Football results - 14 September 2017 On Thursday 14 September the Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 boys’ teams travelled to Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School to compete in their league games. The Year 9 team ended up 5-2 victors, the Year 11 team also won their first league game of the season 3-2 which is a great start (see match report below) and the Year 8 and Year 10 teams put on brave performances, but suffered defeats. Despite this, both teams showed great spirit and character and enjoyed their games - keep up the good work!

Newsletter on and playing some great football. Unfortunately, however Queen Elizabeth’s took the lead and made it 1-0 with a very lucky goal. Problems continued, as just before half time they made it 2-0. The Year 11s were playing some great passing moves but just couldn’t get the final shot in the back of the net. At half time Mr Fox encouraged the team and said that they needed to carry on and do more of the same things, because they were creating great chances. The team definitely listened, starting the first 10 minutes of the second half with some great chances. Soon after that Highfields got their first goal, with Luke Crapper dribbling past Queen Elizabeth’s and slotting it into the bottom left hand corner. The second goal was soon to follow, this time with Luke Crapper playing in an outstanding cross to Luke Roper who scored with an amazing header. It was now 2-2 with not long to go, Highfields were creating lots of chances, and had the majority of the ball. Highfields powered through and got the third goal of the game to pull off an outstanding comeback for the blues. Luke Crapper played a square ball to Robbie Maycock who finished it off calmly in the bottom corner. In the last 10 minutes Highfields defended superbly to come out with a 3-2 win. The comeback had been completed with a great performance from all the team.

Sports Leaders News Friday 7 September – PE Apprentice Induction Highfields’ 2017-18 PE Apprentices had their induction on Friday with Chief Executive Officer, Jill Eaton and Tom Eaton from Sporting Futures, alongside a member of staff from the Derbyshire Apprentice Team and Mrs Allen and Mrs Turner from Highfields. Three PE Apprentices joined our induction day from Erewash School Sports Partnership as Highfields is the PE Apprentice Hub School for Derbyshire.

Sports Leaders UK Course Registration The registration process for 2017/18 is taking place for the various Sports Leaders UK courses. To date 227 students from Years 7-13 have registered. The first event will take place on Thursday 21 September where a team of 25 leaders will be involved in the Primary Schools Mini Soccer event on Cavendish Fields.
Sports Leaders - SEN Coaching Year 12/13 Sports Leaders have begun their coaching to support SEN adults from Golding House on Wednesdays at Highfields and Fridays at the Arc. They are also supporting the delivery of the Sky Living for Sport programme for our Highfields SEN club during Friday lunchtimes.

Parent/Carer Notices Medical Appointments/lateness Years 9-11 Please be aware that any student in Years 9 to 11 needing to leave during the school day to attend a medical appointment will be required to show a letter from a parent/carer or the medical appointment letter/appointment card to Mrs Hutchings in the Pastoral Office before they are allowed to sign out. If no confirmation is received the student will not be allowed to sign out until Mrs Hutchings has spoken to a parent/carer. If your child arrives late to school, please provide a note to explain why they are late. This is to ensure the safety of students. Many thanks for your cooperation.
Facial Piercings We would like to remind parents/carers that facial piercings are not allowed in school and any students with nose piercings will be required to remove their stud, cover it with a plaster or wear a transparent nose stud for school. If you require further clarification of the school uniform, full guidance is given on school website and if you have any questions about our policy, please contact your relevant Head of Year.
Show My Homework Following last summer’s consultation on Show My Homework we have decided that we will move to introduce this system across all year groups during the next term, once we have addressed issues identified during the trial phase. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the consultation.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
