Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Non-uniform day and Challenge Day Notice Following the success of the end-of-year ‘Challenge Day’ in July over previous years, we have decided to organise a similar programme of activities for students to mark the end of this school year on Friday 20 July. A group of staff will be working with students to organise the day which will, as in previous years, involve a combination of individual and team challenges, year group celebrations and awards and a range of activities for students to enjoy during the lunch break. We will write to you with further details of arrangements for the Challenge Day shortly and students will be given an outline of the events and activities in assemblies. We have also decided to make Friday 25 May a themed non-uniform day, with students asked to wear sporting attire (eg football top) and make a contribution of £1 during tutor time to help support this end of year event. Staff wearing ‘sporty non-uniform’ will also be invited to make a similar contribution. Money raised will also be donated to other charities and school funds. As Year 11 students will be involved in public exams that day, they will be required to attend school in their uniform and are not required to make a donation. Thank you as always for your support.
Year 8 & Year 9 Girls – HPV Vaccinations on 14 June A reminder that the Immunisation Nursing Team will be offering Year 8 and Year 9 girls the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in school on Thursday 14 June. This is two injections given on the same day. The HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and consists of two doses, the first in Year 8 and the second in Year 9. Year 9 students will receive their second dose if they were seen last year, however any Year 9 student who missed the vaccination last year can also be seen by the Nursing Team. Polite requests: Dropping off and collecting students We would like to remind parents/carers that students should be dropped off and collected outside of the school site in the mornings and at the end of the school day. Parents/carers should not enter or park in the school car park allocated for staff and visitors or bus bays allocated for school transport. We are always keen to be good neighbours and to protect the safety of all pedestrians and road users. With this in mind please exercise care and consideration during busy times and take care not to block driveways or to use private car parks of local businesses.
Non-smoking site From July 2007 it has been illegal to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England. Highfields School is a smoke free site - this means that all people who use the site, both within the buildings and grounds must not smoke, this includes tobacco-free e-cigarettes. We would request that parents/carers dropping off or collecting students would refrain from smoking on the school premises or at the school gates.
Dog walkers on site Highfields School is also a dog-free site. Local residents and parents/carers are asked to ensure that dogs do not come onto the school site at any time, including evenings and weekends. Many thanks for your understanding and co-operation. P R Cole & B P Riggott Co-Headteachers

Newsletter School News Lydia cuts her hair off for charity! One of our Year 7 students took the decision to donate her hair to support people who have experienced hair loss due to cancer. Lydia said “I decided to cut my hair short because I wanted to send the rest of it off to charity. This way they can create wigs for people who have lost their hair due to cancer”.

Newsletter British Orienteering On Wednesday Judith Holt from British Orienteering came to deliver training to Highfields Sports Leaders in preparation for the primary event they will be leading in June.
County Sports Leadership Academy Hettie, Grace, Scarlett, Holly and Evie, our Year 9 girls who are members of the County Sports Leadership Academy, started their delivery of a 10week programme at All Saints Junior School on Wednesday. They are leading girls in sporting activities to increase participation – well done to you all!
Derbyshire Golf On Friday, Alice Lowe from Derbyshire Golf came to deliver a Young Golf Activators course for Highfields Sports Leaders who will be running the Tri Golf competition for primary students in June.

Last week’s maths quiz answer … The numbers 72, 8, 24, 10, 5, 45, 36, 15 are grouped in pairs so that each pair has the same product. Which number is paired with 10?
Solution: As the product of each pair has the same value, this value must be product of the smallest and largest numbers, that is 5 × 72. So the number which is paired with 10 is 5 × 72 ÷ 10, that is 36.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
