Newsletter Message from the headteacher At this time of year the school is trying to figure out what difference our improvement projects have made to the quality of education that your children get. With this in mind I been spending quite a lot of my time reading through the comments which parents/carers, students and staff have provided in response to recent surveys. There are hundreds of comments about many different aspects of the school. Every single one of them is useful in informing what we do next. I’ve thought carefully about parents’/carers’ comments and about how different my experience of school as a parent is different to my experience in this school as a leader. As a parent I chiefly register changes to uniform expectations, responses to my children’s behaviour, any negative behaviour which affects them and changes in staffing (most obviously when a teacher has a long term absence). I think you may notice the same things because many of your comments reflected these concerns. This may explain why some still think school leaders are ‘obsessed with uniform’. I can only say again that we are not but that you may notice any actions or changes around uniform before you notice them around pedagogical practice, performance management, teacher recruitment/training etc. What I wasn’t expecting was the high number of comments warmly appreciating the work of the school and particular staff members. We have forwarded these comments to the staff involved. As for this ‘column’ in the newsletter - you are mixed in your feedback with some of you finding it ‘refreshing’ and another respondent feeling that it is too self-indulgent (fair enough). In any event, thank you for all your comments: they will absolutely inform planning for next year. In lessons this week I happened across an English teacher and his year 8 students enjoying the poem Island Man by Grace Nichols. It’s about a man from the Caribbean dreaming of his island home only to wake up to the grey reality of London. Our children are growing up in the Peak District, one of the most beautiful places on earth, but occasionally I feel that they miss out on some of the benefits of living in a more diverse environment (the main thing I miss about living in such a community is the food). Anyway, this poem got them thinking about why people might leave their apparently idyllic homeland for what may seem like a more difficult existence in London. My thanks go to the teacher who was behind this excellent learning. On Tuesday lunchtime year 9 students commemorated the Hillsborough disaster with really powerful drama performances. Their work was thoughtful, well designed and convincingly performed. It did what political theatre is supposed to do in that it engaged us, challenged us, entertained us and educated us at the same time. And that brings us to the end of the spring term. If you have a child preparing for exams in your family I hope they intersperse some efficient and high impact revision with an appropriate level of rest, relaxation and chocolate. Our HR team left little Easter eggs around school offices to cheer up tired staff, so I hid mine and challenged senior leaders to hunt for them. Only Mr Hodkin took me up on the offer and spent a good five minutes looking for one before I was forced to admit that I had either found and eaten them myself or had forgotten where I had hidden them. IMPORTANT REMINDER School crossing patrol - Starkholmes Derbyshire County Council have informed us that the school crossing patrol at Starkholmes on Church Street will only be manned until 12 April. The Council are recruiting to fill the position, however from 29 April (until the vacancy has been filled), there will be no patrol to assist students crossing the road at the corner of St Giles Church. If you know your child crosses the road here please ask them to be extra vigilant and to take care looking both up and down the hill before crossing. Reduced canteen service for years 9-13 at Lumsdale - 2 May 2019 The Wheeldon Hall at Lumsdale will be used as a Polling Station on Thursday 2 May and out of use during the day. Catering arrangements for students in years 9 to 13 will be limited and a reduced menu of hot/cold take way foods will be offered in the sixth form canteen on Thursday. Students at Lumsdale will be reminded on return from the Easter holiday and if they do not wish to use the reduced service option on 2 May, they will be advised to bring a packed lunch.

Newsletter Year 11 important dates The exam season is already under way and we are very proud of the way in which so many of our students have approached the practical and oral exams already taken. Our Easter break is very late this year, with us returning to school on Monday 29 April, just two weeks before the final exams begin.
Monday 29 April – Friday 10 May: Normal lessons continue – the last two weeks of the standard timetable before final exams begin.
Monday 13 May: Formal exams in the sports hall begin. Students need to be at the exam room a minimum of 15 minutes before the exam.
Monday 13 May-Friday 24 May: Normal lessons will continue when students are not in exams. The timetable will also be supplemented with pre-exam ‘booster sessions’. These will take place close to each exam and provide students with final reminders and tips. They do not replace final revision but help to supplement it. Booster timetables will be published shortly. Until Friday 24 May all students will be expected to be in lessons, boosters, or exams. Our formal timetabled lessons will end on Friday 24 May.
From Monday 3 June: On return from half term students will be expected to attend pre-exam booster sessions and exams only. We still expect full and correct school uniform throughout this period.
Year 11 final assembly will be on 14 June (periods 3 and 4) in the Wheeldon Hall.
Exams finish on 19 June 2019. All students must ensure that they are available to sit exams up to and including Wednesday 26 June. This is the exam contingency day set by exam boards, in case one or more exams needs to be rearranged due to national or local disruption.
Prom, hoodies and yearbook deadlines:
1 May – deadline for order and payment of yearbook, after this date there will be no more opportunities to order a yearbook 3 May - deadline for Prom payment and consent slip 10 May - deadline for hoody order and payment

Newsletter School news Hillsborough Disaster 30th Anniversary Remembrance Performance 15 April 2019 marked the 30th Anniversary since the Hillsborough disaster took place in Sheffield. The match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was a semi-final cup game. 96 people lost their lives that day when Pen 3 became over-crowded; they went to a football match and never came home. In preparation for their GCSE devised module, year 9 work on a project based on the stimulus of the Hillsborough Disaster. After numerous workshops exploring the stimulus with their class teacher, and developing their techniques and understanding of different practitioners, students begin to create their own project performance. Aiming for a running time of five minutes and using a range of techniques, the students worked each lesson and one lunchtime a week (homework set) as an ensemble to create a moving performance. Students explored the perspective of the media, government, fans, family and police. They used factual evidence, their own opinion and printed newspapers and reports. “I’m so proud of the students and the work they have done in recent weeks. We chose to share these performances Tuesday lunchtime to an audience of students from across the year groups (including fellow year 9’s) as well as staff. Students arrived punctually and even came at break to have one last run through. The students performed for their assessments last week and any that wanted to took part in the lunchtime remembrance performance. I feel it was a fitting way to mark such a special occasion in history. I lived in Liverpool for five years and my first teaching job and teacher training were based in Liverpool. This city holds a special place in my heart and some of my friend’s family were affected directly.”
Year 9 student Charlie said: “It was great to see the work of other students in other forms. Most of us who performed are taking GCSE drama next year. The standard was so high and I can’t wait to be in a GCSE class with these students next year. It felt really special and was moving at times, too. Some of us tried to include John Godber techniques to add humour to our work when fans were getting ready for the game”. Another student added “I liked exploring other perspectives and learning about the corruption within the media and the negative impact this had on so many people’s lives. I can’t believe the truth was hidden for so long!”.

Newsletter Year 10 students already taking GCSE drama gave their thoughts after enjoying the showcase. Tia said: “It was really good! I can’t believe these students are in year 9 creating such sophisticated work”. Millie added “I agree. The skills they used were really advanced. They were focused and had great techniques.” “I thought the performances were really well planned and rehearsed – they clearly put in a lot of time and effort!” commented Grace in year 10.

Newsletter Highfields Easter concert Highfields Easter concert is an annual celebration of the school’s musical talent and this year was no exception. The programme included a rich blend of musical styles and ensembles and culminated in the coming together of staff and students in the mixed choir who performed a West Side Story medley. It is impossible to draw out highlights - the entire evening was a showcase of musical excellence and testament to the hours of devoted practice our students do both in and outside of school time. We say goodbye to our talented year 13 musicians whilst also welcoming onto the stage the new generation - Highfields Junior Choir bringing with them unbounded enthusiasm and remarkable stage craft under the tutorship of two of our talented ‘senior’ year 13’s; Emily and Ella. To quote our headteacher Mr Marsh, himself an accomplished musician, “I have a policy of not lying to musicians. It really was excellent”. Thanks to our brilliant students and the support they receive from home! Next stop Legally Blonde the musical at the end of year - see you there!

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Year 12-13 sports leaders moderation On Friday 5 April our year 12 and 13 level 3 sports leaders excelled in their delivery to All Saints class 3 for their final moderation - all have successfully passed the practical delivery. Next is the theory element which will be externally moderated on Wednesday 10 July along with all the other sports leaders UK courses. A fantastic effort by Harry and Jack (year 13) and Alisha, Ben, Ciara, Rose and Holly (year 12).

Newsletter Girls Active coaches camp 2019 Year 11 sports leader, Jayden, attended the Girls Active coaches camp 2019 from Friday 5 April Sunday 7 April at Loughborough University. Jayden has been involved in team building exercises, reflection, pilates, high quality delivery, sport specific leadership, Team You, drumba, Thai boxing and leading change. She listened to several keynote speeches from international athletes and generally had a fantastic time along with 150 other leaders from across the country.
Sports leaders annual awards evening 2019 On Thursday 11 April we held the annual sports leaders awards evening 2019 with guest of honour, Anthony Clark, GB badminton player – full report on the evening to follow in the next newsletter.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. Newsletter School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
