Newsletter Message from the headteacher I hope that the positive tone of these ‘bits’ in the newsletter don’t give you the idea that I’m not wrestling with difficult and taxing challenges. For all its strengths there remains much to achieve at Highfields School. I feel an absolute responsibility to staff, governors, parents and carers to find a place where all students love our school and get what they need to go on and live happy and productive lives. On the other hand, I’m sure you could do without tales of my battle to ensure that year 11 boys use the correct toilet, so I will continue to zoom in on the many positive elements of school life that there are to focus on. The only problem with music staff at Highfields is they don’t have anything with which to compare themselves. They, unlike me, haven’t spent the last 25 years sitting in a variety of school concerts and so may not be in a position to understand that Highfields concerts are the cat’s whiskers. Wednesday’s concert featured such a range of styles performed to such a high standard that it rivalled performances I saw at the BRIT School where students spent almost all of their time focusing solely on the performing arts. I could start to single out students, but I wouldn’t know where to stop. Perhaps the item which touched me most was a year 11 lad with whom I’ve had various discussions over the last few months. At NO POINT did this young man think to mention to me that he had the MOST AMAZING baritone voice. He sang Alma Del Core by Caldara (which I sang for A level shortly after Caldara wrote it in about 1712) which just reduced me to rubble. In lessons this week I walked past A level physicists’ door without any transfer of my particles into their dimension, which was a welcome relief for them. Elsewhere I saw a maths teacher in full flow on algebra with a year 8 class. Teachers like this one make it look easy, but the way she phrased a question subtly resulted in ALL students considering the answer. She did this by asking the question … leaving a pause … and then targeting a student by name whose knowledge she felt might be insecure. Oh, and the picture below is from an A Level history lesson on American Civil Rights 1865-1992 - as the young person at the board suggests it was entirely student led (thanks to the skill of the teacher). Finally, in my own lesson earlier today I asked students as they left the classroom to use a sentence which demonstrated that they had learnt the difference between ‘accept’ and ‘except’. Most students chose unremarkable but correct sentences, but the last student looked at me with some compassion and said, ‘I accept your gender decision’. I didn’t say anything but I kind of wish I had because now I’m really confused … A Marsh Headteacher

IMPORTANT NOTICE School crossing update - Starkholmes Derbyshire County Council have informed us that the school crossing patrol at Starkholmes will only be manned until 12 April. The Council are recruiting to fill the position, however from 29 April (until the vacancy has been filled), there will be no patrol to assist students crossing the road at the corner of St Giles Church. If you know your child crosses the road here please ask them to be extra vigilant and to take care looking both up and down the hill before crossing. Parent/carer survey feedback Thank you very much to the 229 parents and carers who responded to our recent survey. Your views are invaluable to us in reviewing our work and in refining our plans for next year. Here are some of the key outcomes:
A large majority of parents/carers remain highly satisfied with school: 90%+ report that their child is safe in a school with high expectations, appropriate challenge, good teaching and effective curriculum. This is consistent with November survey and surveys over previous years, including Ofsted ParentView in May 2017
85% of parents/carers feel that behaviour is good and many indicate support for measures that we take to improve it further.
Whilst most parents/carers are happy with data/reporting systems, 15% are not and this was reflected in a number of comments, for example about how we set target grades. This will be an area for review for us ahead of the next academic year.

Newsletter PTFA news PTFA quiz Thank you to all the parents/carers, staff and friends who attended the quiz held last Friday night at Designate@thegate. The event attracted teams if all ages and was a great family night out. Over £150 was raised over the course of a most enjoyable evening. Mrs Merrick was a fantastic quizmaster and maths teacher, Mrs Brown’s team, took first place.

Newsletter School news Evening of dance Miss Bonsall
The CAT workshop (organised by Mrs Petch) was delivered by Hayley Ross of the CAT Scheme and director of DYDC. Students involved were from years 7-10, invited based on the incredible skills and techniques that they have demonstrated in afterschool clubs and lessons. All students threw themselves into the workshop, for some taking on the challenge of doing new types of movement. They were asked to make solos and then work with someone they were not used to working with to create duets and choreographed some great work. A fun afternoon was had by all - well done! If any students or parents/carers want to know more about CAT they can contact Mrs Petch - it is a great scheme for our students to get involved with.

Newsletter Year 8 technology club Mr Richardson
This year’s year 8 technology club was, once again, a real success. The year started by preparing the groundwork to design and build our hydraulic robots that would eventually compete in combat with each other. The four teams that completed their robots were; The Spoons, The Sponges, The Syringes and the Hex Horrors. The competition was eventually won by the Spoons, followed by the Syringes in second place - well done to the Hex Horrors and the Sponges for a valiant try!
This year’s tech club culminated with the trip to Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham on Wednesday 27 March. It was a special STEM activity called GUTS (Get Up To Speed with STEM) and consisted of a wide range of interesting technology topics. There were many local employers demonstrating the latest technologies found in industry today. There were 3-D printers, exotic cars, smart materials, Army, Navy, Air force and a whole host of other interesting ‘tech stuff’. It was a very hands-on day with lots of free give-aways, such as laser engraved pens and sweets. Students represented the school fantastically and all had a great time.

Newsletter Four seasons in one day Mrs Barker
This week all our year 10 geography students have taken part in some rivers fieldwork in Edale. This was led by our colleagues from the Peak District National Park Education Service who shared their enthusiasm and wide-knowledge about the rivers in this part of the National Park. Students were investigating how discharge changes downstream and spent much of the day in the streams measuring characteristics such as width, depth and speed – using dog biscuits work out how fast the streams were flowing. They undertook each activity with characteristic good humour whilst enduring sunshine, wind, rain, sleet and hail! We would like to thank our colleagues at the Education Service for a(nother) fabulous experience!

Newsletter Sports Leaders News KS2 SEN Boccia Championships 2019 On Friday 29 March teams for All Saints, Lea and Wessington primary schools took part in the KS2 SEN Boccia championships. There were 43 young people trying their arm in boccia. The seven sports leaders on duty were from years 7 and 9 and they were brilliant! As for many, this was their first event acting as an official - well done Sam (year 9) and Lauren, Esther, Freya, Leonie, DaisyMay and Ellie (year 7). The atmosphere was one of calm as the young students concentrated to project the boccia balls with accuracy - the results were as follows: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th

Newsletter County Sports Hall Athletics All Saints represented the Highfields Cluster and School Sports Partnership at the County Sports Hall Athletics finals in Derby on Monday 1 April. What a fantastic effort – they finished fourth, the best ever finish from Rural Derbyshire!
SSP Boccia All Saints took part in the School Sports Partnership Boccia on Tuesday 2 April, finishing 3rd – well done!
High 5 Netball On Wednesday 3 April Lea and All Saints represented the cluster at the School Sports Partnership finals for High 5 netball. Lea came 5th and All Saints 6th – the competition was won by Osmaston Primary from the Ashbourne cluster.
Sports Leadership Moderation Today, Friday 5 April, our year 12/13 students completed their final sports leadership moderation for their level 3 qualification. All Saints class 3 came to be led by our fantastic leaders - more in next week’s news

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s school book club recommendation is
‘Skating Sensation’ by Rachel Renee Russell.
I loved this book because it made me feel like I was in the book. It's all about a girl who loved ice-skating, but she couldn't do it. If you haven't read this book yet you need to because it is absolutely amazing. This book is quite long but it flies by when you get into it.
