Newsletter School News Year 8 ‘GUTS’ Trip to Magna Science Adventure Centre Mr Richardson
On Wednesday 18 April the Year 8 Technology Club attended a STEM activity called GUTS (Get Up To Speed with STEM). It was held at Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham and consisted of a wide range of interesting technology topics. There were many local employers, including the Army, Navy and Air Force demonstrating the latest technologies found in industry today, such as 3-D printers, exotic cars, smart materials and a whole host of other interesting technology. It was a very hands-on day with lots of free give-aways, such as laser engraved pens and sweets. Our students represented Highfields fantastically and all had a great time.
Theatre Trip to see Holes Mrs Brown
Highfields students enjoyed an evening out at the theatre last month. Members of the school’s Year 9 and Year 10 book clubs visited the Nottingham Playhouse to see the stage version of the book, ‘Holes’ by the famous children’s author Louis Sachar. The complicated and hilarious plot of the book turned out to be just as funny as a stage adaptation, getting plenty of laughs from the audience - the show was a big hit with the students.

Newsletter The first Lower School Book Fair – a great success! Mrs Robinson
Students enjoyed browsing the shelves and buying books at the Scholastic Book Fair held at Lower School last week. The pop-up bookshop was extremely popular at breaks and lunchtimes. “Many students bought books or asked if I could get copies for the school library, said Mrs Robinson, Lower School Librarian. “The stall was staffed by Year 8 students, who really enjoyed the experience of serving customers and managing a real bookshop. The fair created a tremendous buzz about reading and, in an area where we have very few bookshops, it was a really great opportunity for the students to discover new authors and browse some of the latest titles.” In total students and staff spent almost £750 at the Book Fair, and in return Highfields received £371 of vouchers from Scholastic Books to spend on new books for the library. “This is the first time we’ve held a Book Fair in school,” said Mrs Robinson, “but as it’s clearly something that engages and excites the students, whilst also raising money for new books for the library, it will hopefully become an annual event on the school calendar.”

Newsletter Careers, College & Apprenticeship News Tarmac apprenticeship opportunities Representatives from Tarmac came to speak to Year 11 students in assembly recently about apprenticeship opportunities, advice on applications and tips for success during a recruitment process. Following the assembly Tarmac have provided further information on their apprenticeship scheme at their Tunstead site. Build yourself a great future - earn as you learn as an Apprentice at Tarmac! At Tarmac, our people have been shaping the world around us for more than 100 years, from the roads we drive on every day, to the buildings, airports, sports stadiums, offices and hospitals we live in and work in. We are very proud of our history our business success and safety standards which all contribute to make us the company we are today. We also have huge ambitions for the future and want to continue our growth and innovation to remain at the leading edge of our industry. We have a team of over 7,000 employees across the UK and as part of a global business in CRH, the career opportunities are limitless. Here at Tunstead, near Buxton, we have one of the largest limestone quarries in Europe and one of three Tarmac Cement Plants in the UK where we make and supply a range of lime, limestone and cement products to building, agriculture and water industries, for example. We have been running a Modern Apprenticeship Scheme, here at Tunstead, since 1997 and we are now recruiting five Mechanical and Electrical Apprentices to join our four year programme, starting in September 2018. To be considered for these roles, the Company would be looking for candidates with a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade 4 or equivalent, including Maths, English and a Science. Candidates who meet these requirements will be invited to complete a series of aptitude, cognitive and practical tests and if successful, will then be called for interview before the final selection is made. The four year Apprenticeship Programme starts with a nine month period of college based training to achieve City and Guilds 7582/2635 and Level 2 Diploma qualifications. This is followed by a mix of practical work experience and ‘day release’ to achieve BTEC Level 3 Diploma eventually leading to NVQ 3 Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical). After qualification, there are further opportunities to study at HNC, HND and, in certain circumstances, even Degree level! In addition, from 2018, Tarmac has become a Gold Partner in The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, giving even greater opportunities to our younger employees. When not at college, Apprentices will work across a number of different areas of the business learning, first hand, about our cement manufacturing, limestone extraction and lime processing methods and equipment as well as learning other industry skills such as Plant maintenance, Electrical Distribution, Machining, Fabrication, Welding, PLC programming and Automation and Design. Administrative Assistant The Estate Office, Bakewell
A unique and exciting opportunity for a pre or post-graduate to join an Estate Office near Bakewell managing diverse landed estates in Derbyshire and throughout the East Midlands. The successful candidate’s role is expected to be long-term with their responsibility increasing as their experience grows. High levels of literacy and numeracy are essential, as is an ability to learn basic accountancy on computerised systems. Prior agricultural experience is not essential although the successful candidate will need to have an interest in commercial agriculture, property development and management as well as in broader land management and conservation. Training in each of these skills will be available to the successful candidate who must demonstrate self-motivation, enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, the ability to cope with responsibility and to work as part of a team. A working knowledge of French is desirable although not mandatory. Salary to be negotiated depending on the age, qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Last week’s maths quiz answer … A male punky fish has 9 stripes and a female punky fish has 8 stripes. I count 86 stripes on the fish in my tank. What is the ratio of male fish to female fish?
Solution: If there are f females and m males then: 86=8f+9m=8(f+m)+m Now 86=8×10+6=8×9+14 Only the first of these is feasible so m=6 and f=4 Therefore the ratio of male to female fish is 3:2

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home.
