Newsletter Message from the headteacher This week out and about I came across two year 11 linguists who were using their phones to record their responses in German to questions which may be included in the upcoming oral exams. They had been advised by their teachers that evidence suggested that this was the most effective way to revise. We have spent a good amount of time speaking to Y11s and other groups about our ‘do less, achieve more’ approach to revision. Perhaps one reason I am suited to teaching is that, as a child, I was an awful student. I spent much of Spring 1986 locked in a hotel room at the Cavendish Hotel. This was because my dad, the proprietor at the time, figured it was the only way to force me to focus on revision. He disabled the clocked radio and TV and was, therefore, probably reasonably hopeful that I would do some revision. I spent much of my time looking out of the window at the Chatsworth estate and the rest of the time I wasted. My favourite waste of time was to read through my books. Occasionally I would underline something. In a few cases I enjoyed creating revision cards. I need not have bothered. In the absence of any other activities, these were pretty much a waste of time. A recent research project (I don’t have time to find the name of it right now) found that in a study of university students in almost all cases the revision technique which the students most preferred was the one which was least useful. If I understand it correctly (but I’d have to check) the most effective was answering exam questions from scratch under timed conditions and then going back to redraft them in light of the mark scheme. My point is that revision is often counter-instinctive. What feels good often isn’t. Elsewhere in the school we had the evening of dance which was absolutely brilliant (especially the number where they wore head torches) and the boat project where students are designing a craft for the Matlock Bath illuminations later this year. Finally, for anyone who saw me being interrogated by the police outside upper site on Saturday, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation. I had let myself in to do some work and was unable to deactivate the alarm. This resulted within a few minutes in the arrival of a squad car with blues and twos blaring, closely followed by the school business manager and capped off with a dressing down from a man sent out by Riber Security. I am sorry to everyone affected (if you were secretly planning to rob the school - don’t bother; the alarm systems are really good). A Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Polite request – dropping off and collecting students We would like to remind all parents/carers that students should be dropped off and collected outside of the school sites in the mornings and at the end of the school day. Parents/carers should not enter or park in the school car park allocated for staff and visitors or bus bays allocated for school transport unless they have been given express permission from school. If parents/carers require access to the school site based on physical need, please write to the appropriate members of staff below to request permission:

Reminder: year 9 internal exams Before students embark on options courses in year 10 another big step is to be successful in the forthcoming set of year 9 exams. Exams in all subjects other than English, maths and science take place in normal lesson time and classrooms in the two weeks before Easter (weeks commencing 1 and 8 April). Exams in English, maths and science will take place in the sports hall in late June. All these exams are designed to enable students to gain experience of preparing for and taking demanding exams. The June exams in the sports hall provide a taste of the format that will be experienced when students take GCSEs and A levels. Good outcomes in year 9 exams are important as a basis for GCSE study. A crucial part of this experience is getting used to exam preparation and revision. Students will be assessed on material from across their course, so need to recall information covered in class some time ago. Please support your child by encouraging effective and sufficient revision. It is important that time spent on revision is effective. Simply reading notes will not be effective. By engaging in more active work, such as making revision cards, students will recall information much more readily. Testing and quizzing are the most powerful ways to revise. You can help enormously here by asking your son / daughter to tell you about what they have been learning or testing them on key information. Regular repetition of learning also helps to make knowledge more secure, so two or three revisits to material is likely to work much better than one long session. Newsletter School news Evening of dance Miss Bonsall
This week we held our annual event; The Evening of Dance. It was a fantastic evening showcasing the wonderful talented dancers at Highfields School. There were students from every year group, ranging from years 7 to 13. A mixture of styles were showcased during the evening including contemporary, ballet, tap and hip hop. The dance numbers have been developed in class, dance club and after school to produce the best for the annual evening. Other pieces included were exam pieces from year 11 showing their choreography skills, along with our year 10 GCSE students, inspiring our younger dancers and potential GCSE cohort of the future.
Mrs Petch who jointly co-ordinated the event with Mrs Hollinrake said "as a department we are very passionate about our subject and hope to show off the fantastic skills of our students for years to come. I was very impressed by the focus and engagement of our students". Mrs Hollinrake added "it was a great evening showcasing lots of different talents and genres of dance. Sadly we say good bye to three year 13s that have been in evening of dance for the past seven years. We want to wish them all the best for the future and thank you for all your time, passion and dedication you shown and keep dancing!"

The year 10 health day on 22 March was a great success. We received lots of positive feedback from our year 10 students and the workshop providers. Students took part in workshops in healthy lifestyles, drugs, self-defence, Zumba, fitness and trampolining.

Newsletter Student Parliament update Climate Change student report On 15 March Highfields upper school united against the global climate change crisis. The day was organised by passionate students across many year groups and supported by many more. Teachers were on hand throughout the day and were pleased to help out with the educational experience. The day commenced with an excellent student-made video which encouraged students to demonstrate peacefully. The video was very professional and made use of the local area while delivering much information about climate change. Initially, students started peacefully gathering by the Speakers’ Stage. As the crowds grew, banners were raised with slogans such as ‘what is the difference between 2 and 3 degrees? – a civilisation’. The crowd quietened as the first speaker took to the stage. Student Ella spoke first about how every small change matters. Insightfully, she commented that we humans think someone else will solve the problem and so we do nothing themselves. This seems to directly apply to the common mind set on climate change. Seeing the real power students have from this protest should inspire them to take action themselves. Student Danny used the metaphor of the world being like an oyster which we need to protect. He explained that human ignorance got us into this mess and so we need to overcome it, as Winston Churchill said, become masters of our own fate. Student George highlighted the changes companies need to take to make a difference, whilst student Lily emphasised the changes we can make as individuals. She reiterated ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ stating that reducing is of equal importance as recycling. Visiting speaker Emily gave a well prepared talk on reducing food waste, and advocating meat free Mondays. Robert Court (Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for the Derbyshire Dales constituency) received big cheers after explaining that we may reminisce that when we were at school there were still forests and ice etc. He concluded by saying ‘we don’t inherit the world from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children’. From the heart, and possibly most importantly, Student Ellie highlighted the importance of action rather than words. Mr Marsh and Mr Cole congratulated the students on their mature approach to the demonstration and emphasised the importance of staying focused in our education, so we become the future leaders of change. Students would like to thank the Highfields teachers for all their support in allowing us to be involved in this critical issue. After seeing the power of a group of school students, I hope you take from this report the importance of small change. When you leave the room, why not turn off the light? By Molly, year 9

Wednesday 3 April Lea and All Saints are representing the Highfields Cluster at the School Sports Partnership finals in high 5 netball. PE apprentice, Miss Tabbenor, will be observed teaching a year 8 class in netball as part of her level 3 PE apprentice qualification.
Friday 5 April Year 12-13 sports leaders level 3 moderation from 1-3pm in the sports hall leading All Saints class 3.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Beyond the Baseline project selection Highfields have again been selected by the Youth Sport Trust to take part in the key stage 3 Beyond the Baseline tennis project 2019. As part of delving deeper into the social impact tennis can have, the Tennis Foundation has partnered with the Youth Sport Trust to create a specific programme, Beyond the Baseline. Beyond the Baseline is a secondary school programme that uses tennis and inspirational tennis mentors to nurture students’ aspirations and put them on the path to achieving them. Our 15 Beyond The Baseline tennis mentors inspire students with their experiences of playing tennis and the obstacles they’ve overcome both on and off the court. Our assigned mentor for 2019 is Jade Windley. The Beyond the Baseline Mentors will link their journey to four key employability and life skills – personal, social, creative and thinking skills that everyone needs to be able to achieve their goals. How it works: 1.
A mentor visits a school three times over a 2-3 month period, sharing their tennis story with a small group of targeted students (chosen by the school)
2.
The mentor inspires the students with how they achieved success in tennis as well as talk about four employability and life skills they demonstrated on their journey
3.
Students get active on-court and learn the skills of tennis whilst having fun and working with others
4.
Students work with the rest of their Beyond The Baseline project group to plan, organise and deliver a tennis project
5.
The mentor supports the students and helps them develop new skills
This programme is a part of our tennis delivery 2019. Look out for the year 7-8 Road to Wimbledon tennis tournament we have entered – further information available after Easter on how to take part.

Newsletter National Cross Country Championships Thank you to the year 6 SSP Derbyshire Dales team for giving up their time to participate in the National Cross Country Championships in Loughborough on Saturday 23 March. Well done Freya, Charlie, Rhys and Leighton.
PE apprentice update Our PE apprentices attended central training in Stevenage for their level 3 award on Wednesday 27 March. The apprentices worked through units 11 and 12 of their work folder towards their qualification whilst Mrs Allen and Mrs Turner received training towards the level 4 apprenticeship delivery model ready for September 2019/2020.

Newsletter Sports fixture results Mr Shirtcliffe
Year 8 County netball On Tuesday 26 March the year 8 netball team competed in the County Tournament. Matched against some really good schools the team showed some excellent skill and resilience winning a couple of games and drawing against Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. There were some excellent performances - well done.
Year 7 football The year 7 boys’ football team travelled to Anthony Gell on Wednesday 27 March for a league game. The team had an excellent performance beating Anthony Gell 9-1. A particular mention to Noah who scored 4 and Louis scoring a hat trick - well done boys!

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher.
