Newsletter Message from the headteacher A number of parents were in touch to thank the school for its response to the second day of student ‘strikes’ to raise awareness of climate change last Friday. Positive feedback does wonders for staff morale in schools so thank you for taking the time to offer your encouragement. The project was conceived and facilitated by deputy head Peter Cole but led by students. The lead students produced a YouTube video to focus minds and set up a speakers’ corner event where they spoke with authority and passion, also inviting contributions from guest speakers. Finally, they took part in a Q & A with Sir Patrick McLoughlin, MP for Derbyshire Dales. These events were attended by around 450 students who were impeccable in their support for the initiative. I was so thrilled to see students working so hard to raise awareness of the need for individual and collective action to slow climate change before it is too late. Seeing the students speak so passionately at our ‘speakers’ corner’ event really reinforced a project that we are ‘ramping up’ at the moment and may choose as one of our Big 3 priorities next year. We want to pose a straight forward question of students: ‘what is school for?’ There are too many students in UK schools who appear unable to answer this question satisfactorily. With this question in mind we want to look at our ‘Curriculum’. The ‘Curriculum’ is not about ‘schemes of work’ or ‘the subjects we teach’ or ‘the qualifications we offer’. ‘Curriculum’ describes instead the seminal relationship in school between our students and their learning. More about this in good time. As usual I have been in plenty of lessons this week. Below is a picture, given the climate activists comments about meat consumption reduction, of an EXCELLENT looking meat free halloumi burger cooked by Emily in Y10. I say excellent ‘looking’ because I wasn’t allowed to eat it even though she had made two. I checked immediately to see if our discipline policy allowed me to punish a student for withholding delicious food from me but there was nothing. So I took a picture of it instead. And finally, much to their irritation I was drawn back to our A level physicists who this time were discussing Lenz’s law which states that ‘an induced current will have a direction such that the magnetic field from the current opposes the change that caused it’. One of the more patient students tried to explain this using the contraption below but eventually he lost interest and drifted off and I had to look it up on YouTube.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Year 9 exams 2019 I, along with many colleagues, have had the pleasure of discussing options choices with your sons and daughters in recent weeks. They have talked about their choices and interests with great maturity and we have high hopes of what each student can go on to achieve. Before students embark on options courses in year 10 another big step is to be successful in the forthcoming set of year 9 exams. Exams in all subjects other than English, maths and science take place in normal lesson time and classrooms in the two weeks before Easter (weeks commencing 1 and 8 April). Exams in English, maths and science will take place in the sports hall in late June. All these exams are designed to enable students to gain experience of preparing for and taking demanding exams. The June exams in the sports hall provide a taste of the format that will be experienced when students take GCSEs and A levels. Good outcomes in year 9 exams are important as a basis for GCSE study. A crucial part of this experience is getting used to exam preparation and revision. Students will be assessed on material from across their course, so need to recall information covered in class some time ago. Please support your child by encouraging effective and sufficient revision. It is important that time spent on revision is effective. Simply reading notes will not be effective. By engaging in more active work, such as making revision cards, students will recall information much more readily. Testing and quizzing are the most powerful ways to revise. You can help enormously here by asking your son / daughter to tell you about what they have been learning or testing them on key information. Regular repetition of learning also helps to make knowledge more secure, so two or three revisits to material is likely to work much better than one long session. Newsletter Year 10 exams 2019 It was really good to see so many parents/carers at our recent year 10 parent consultation evening. There were lots of positive and constructive conversations, and it is clear that many of our year 10 students are making good progress on their demanding GCSE courses. A key test of the extent of progress made to date will be the forthcoming year 10 exams. These important exams take place in the first two weeks after Easter (starting on Monday 29 April). Newsletter PTFA update Highfields PTFA Quiz Night – Friday 29 March Highfields PTFA invites parents, teachers and students (accompanied by adults) to a PTFA Quiz Night at Designate on Smedley Street on Friday 29 March, starting at 711pm. Tickets cost £15 for a team of up to six people and are available from both school libraries; reserved via email to Louise Robinson at lrobinson@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk or can be purchased directly from Designate (07790 88842). All money raised will go towards projects currently being supported by the PTFA, such as new microphones for drama and music productions, new books for the school libraries, and a new drinking fountain at upper school site.

Newsletter School news Climate change rally Ella (Y13)
On Friday 15 March a climate rally was held within school with solidarity with those happening across the country. This event was led by a group of students although we did have staff guidance and support. For those who didn’t feel as though the idea of striking was not for them, we also produced a video on the effects of climate, which was shown during registration. The rally itself was held at the front of school (near the bus bays) and despite the wind causing a few issues with the microphone it was a complete success. All the speakers brought forth new ideas and clear messages on how to stop the climate crisis, a few examples were reusable lunch boxes and water bottles and switching lights of when they weren’t needed. The words that have stuck with me from the one of the speeches are “The world is our oyster. But that oyster is dying. When it dies, ask yourself if you helped it to die” although this shows the situation in a negative light, it does have a positive side. The ‘oyster’ isn’t dead yet which means we still have time to save it. We can still stop the climate crisis. During lunchtime the local MP, Patrick McLoughlin, came in to school to discuss climate change and what the government is doing to help it. This discussion was in the style of question time and showed both his commitment to hearing the views of his constituents and his believe that the next generation should have some say in political discourse. Mr McLoughlin also questioned the effectiveness of small scale solutions to such a large scale problem, quipping that: “My one plastic straw will not make a difference”. This commitment to large scale solutions is surely a positive sign. Many thanks to all those who attended the activities held throughout the day, and especially to all those who helped to organise both events. We hope it has helped students to think about how they can help to stop the climate crisis.

Sports Leaders News Combat Sports Hub news Highfields School is a Youth Sport Trust Combat sports hub site. We have received this recognition for the last six years and have been working with the YST to develop the sports of wrestling, fencing, boxing and judo in school on the curriculum and point our students to local clubs for exit routes for extra-curricular activity. This academic year students in year 8 have been receiving coaching from Trevor Hoskins from British wrestling, Sally Peat from British Fencing, Andy Parton from British Judo and Mr Edenbrow has been leading Boxersize for our year 10 (he is taking a level 1 boxing coaching qualification shortly). The coaching received leads to our annual Combat Festival at the Arc leisure centre on Friday 12 July for our students and on Monday 9 July for our primary students.

Judo Update: Andy Parton is investigating interest for a Saturday afternoon judo session for Highfields students at Starkholmes gym. He is currently looking at taster sessions for judo in our feeder primary schools. Watch this space for announcements!
Primary evening sports Wednesday 20 March was the final session of the primary sports evening spring block for South Darley and Elton primaries. The students have been taking part in high 5 netball, benchball, badminton and volleyball over the last four weeks. PE apprentices and sports leaders Holly and Courtney from year 9 have done a brilliant job at leading these sessions as a part of their sports leaders qualifications.
Year 9 girls’ football club update The year 9 Girls football club is run by year 12 sports leaders Holly and Rose. There are a group of year 9 girls attending each week developing their soccer skills and having fun learning together under the leadership of the year 12 level 3 sports leaders.
PE apprentice update On Thursday 21 March Mr Molyneux led a sports session at Monyash Primary School as a part of his ongoing level 5 qualification.

Newsletter Sports News Miss Tabbenor and Mrs Wildgoose Girls from years 7, 9 and 10 too part in an U15 tournament on Thursday 21 March at Littleover Community School. They got drawn into a very hard pool, but they all showed fight and courage to win! We had a fantastic first match which was a win against Dronfield. Unfortunately, we then lost to Chapel, Repton and Trent College. The girls came 4th and they deserve a massive well done! Especially Freya who is in year 7!

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s school book club recommendation is The One Memory of Flora Banks, by Emily Barr I liked this book because it was very different to what I've ever read before! The story was extremely interesting and I would love it if a sequel came out. I could not put it down once I started to read it. If you like reality, adventure and mystery books, this will be the one for you. I highly recommend this to anybody, mostly for the 10-16 range of age. by Niamh, Y8

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher.
