Newsletter Message from the headteacher At year 10 parents’ evening this week a very supportive parent took the time to tell me she reads my piece in the newsletter. This brings the confirmed number of ‘followers’ of my bit in this newsletter to eleven. I checked online to see if this beats Ariana Grande but she has 146 million. Ariana and her peers have a huge influence on our young people which we are only just beginning to experience in schools. Last year I had a discussion with my then seven year old daughter which reflected the language of some of the US YouTubers she follows. We were in the middle of an argument about why she should tidy her bedroom when she turned to me sadly and said, ‘I just don’t think this is working right now… I guess I need some space in our relationship’. The prospect of being dumped by my own daughter threw me slightly but I gave her a little space anyway and I’m glad to say we patched it up and are still together after eight wonderful years. I suppose my point is that going forward I always need to remember that the children in my care are growing up in a very different way than I did. In lessons this week I caught up with A level musician Emily and listened from start to finish to the beautiful waltz for piano which she is working on. It was so nice to get lost in a piece of music. Half way through she indicated to me that I was being called on my radio (walkie-talkie) but I just couldn’t help myself, so I just pushed the headphones closer onto my ears and listened to the remaining minute or so. Luckily it was nothing urgent. I also indulged my secret obsession with another trip to A level physics. This time they were annotating a test which they had just completed. Interestingly, the teacher used a technique where the students first complete the test individually, then they go through it again as a group and try, through discussion and debate, to arrive at an agreed answer. The teacher said that it is his preferred strategy because it requires students to argue their point and can often result in them deepening their understanding because they learn from a peer where they went wrong. Anyway, next week I will tell you how the students got on with their climate change activities (I write this piece Thursday night as there is never time to write during the school day on a Friday). Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Student and parent/carer surveys Many thanks to all parents and carers who have already responded to our second survey of the year. Your views are always important to us, and this survey will help inform our main improvement plan priorities for 2019-20. In this survey we are particularly interested in gathering your views about teaching, curriculum and assessment - what your child learns, how it is learned and how they know about what they can do to improve. As ever we also want to know about your views on standards, behaviour and welfare, and to provide a forum for you to feedback on other things that we are doing well or could do better. We have also sent surveys to all of our students via their Highfields email address and have already had many insightful and constructive responses. As with the parent survey this one has a particular focus on the experiences students have of learning, and this will inform our work on curriculum as we move towards the next academic year. The surveys are anonymous but there is the option to leave contact details if you would like a response. Surveys are open until midnight on Sunday 24 March.
Paracetamol reminder As you will be aware from previous information in the newsletter and email from school, after the Easter break the school will no longer be providing paracetamol for students. To make sure that students are prepared for this, we suggest that students have no more than two tablets in their blister packs kept in their bags. This will enable them to take the tablets if required for minor pains and headaches. If students need paracetamol on a regular basis (for example, following an injury), please send in a supply labelled with their name so that school can hand them out while they need them during this time. Newsletter Year 7 parent consultation evening We are pleased to invite you to attend the year 7 parent consultation evening, which will be held on Tuesday 2 April in the Sports Hall at Lumsdale (upper school site) between 4pm and 7pm. At the meeting you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with subject teachers. We would encourage you to bring your son/daughter to this meeting so that they can contribute to the discussion. An appointment system is essential to the efficient running of the evening and we would ask you to ensure that your son/daughter makes appointments at times convenient to you, and that you keep to these times as far as possible. A maximum of five minutes per appointment is available because of the numbers in teaching groups. However, some members of staff teach several groups and may not have time to see all parents. If you have real concerns in a particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact the member of staff at a later date, if you are unsuccessful on the evening. The evening will end at 7pm promptly. Students will record appointments on an appointment sheet that they will be given on Wednesday 20 March. Please tell them what times you would like appointments and ask your child to ensure that no appointment is made after 6.45pm. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you. HPV immunisations – year 8 and 9 girls The Immunisation Team have confirmed they will be offering vaccinations to all year 8 and year 9 girls on Tuesday 11 June 2019 for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and to get the best protection it is important that your daughter receives two injections. The first injection will be for year 8 girls and girls in year 9 will receive their second injection (injections are usually offered 12 to 24 months after the first). Letters are being issued to year 8 students along with a consent form to be returned asap in order to allow the Immunisation Team to order sufficient vaccinations. Year 9 girls will receive their second dose if they were seen last year and have already signed a consent form, however any year 9 girl who missed their vaccination last year can also be seen on the day. Information on the vaccine can be accessed via the NHS website (http://www.nhs.uk/hpv) describing the disease and benefits of the vaccination. However, if you have any questions or would like further information, the Immunisation Nursing Team can be contacted on 01283 707170 (select option 3 – immunisations).

Newsletter Tellonym We have been made aware that a number of our students are using an app called “TELLONYM”. Tellonym is an app designed for teenagers that lets people leave anonymous comments for other users. It advertises itself as “the most honest place on the internet. See what your friends think of you, answer anonymous questions and ask others the things you have never dared….”. Users can register using either an email address or a phone number and can search for friends via their contacts list. The app can be linked to Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram, many of which are used by young people. Anonymity is the whole point of Tellonym, which makes it the ideal platform for cyberbullying. The app does have terms of use that prohibit offensive content, but this does not prevent online bullying or unpleasant comments being made. A home feed displays all messages addressed to a user, and push notifications alert users whenever a new message or “tell” is delivered. Ski Trip to Davos, Switzerland 14-22 February 2020 Mrs Turner
Yet again, we had a fantastic time in Davos this year and have decided to return next year, depending on interest. The resort is perfect for our trip. The benefits we enjoyed were the high quality ski equipment, un-crowded well-groomed ski slopes, no lift queues, around 7 hours ski tuition from British ski instructors and full evening entertainments programme. The trip is open to all year groups and the total cost is £980. Letters can be collected from the main office on both school sites if students would like to find out more about the trip.

Newsletter Making the most of revision As we approach the summer term all of our students, from year 7 through to year 13 will be experiencing exams. We want them all to be confident in their approach and ultimately successful in their results. They key is effective revision. Unfortunately, when it comes to revision, many hours can be spent doing the wrong things – such as simply re-reading notes, or kidding ourselves we’re doing something really productive by going over work with a highlighter. We need to avoid these practices and are working with our students to help them make the most of their revision time. The work of Professor John Dunlosky has been very helpful to us. He explains that there are two key ingredients for effective revision: 1. Retrieval Practice - students need to test themselves. Parents/carers can really help here by asking their youngsters about the topics they have been learning. Knowledge has to be applied so answering past paper questions is a great way to revise. 2. Spaced practice - for knowledge to really stick in our memory we need to repeat our learning at intervals. Without repetition and review knowledge will become lost and nothing will actually be learned. The earlier we can start the more opportunities for review we have. A number of resources to support revision can be found on our website. These have been produced to support year 11 students in particular but they should be useful to all students. The Study Skills booklet outlines many active revision techniques, such as machining revision cards and mind maps. It also lists some very useful revision apps. A second booklet brings together the wise words and successful experience of our sixth form students on revision. Year 10 students may find the booklet of revision advice from subjects very useful too. We wish all our students every success – and know that the secret lies in preparation and practice. Newsletter Highfields PTFA Quiz Night – Friday 29 March Highfields PTFA invites parents, teachers and students (accompanied by adults) to a PTFA Quiz Night at Designate on Smedley Street on Friday 29 March, starting at 7pm. Tickets cost £15 for a team of up to six people and are available from both school libraries or email Louise Robinson at lrobinson@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. All money raised will go towards projects currently being supported by the PTFA, such as new microphones for drama and music productions, new books for the school libraries, and a new drinking fountain at upper school site.

Newsletter School news Climate change In school we are doing a lot to support students’ understanding of, and interest in, environmental issues and many students in the school feel passionately about these issues. In support of climate change activities taking place across the country on 15 March students at Highfields were given the opportunity to express their views through a student led rally at Lumsdale site at 11am. This featured a number of student and adult speakers, talking about a range of environmental issues including climate change, the role of large corporations, the impact of meat consumption, and the role of parliament in bringing about environmental change. All students were also given the opportunity to watch an excellent 3 minute film in form time about climate change that was produced by students passionate about issues affecting the environment.
Book Club’s Big Night Out Mrs Robinson
Book club members from both lower and upper school recently enjoyed a night at the theatre. A party of 22 students from years 7, 8, 9 and 10, plus Mrs Robinson and Mr Thoday, visited Derby Theatre to see a performance of ‘Noughts and Crosses’, a stage version of the book of the same name by author Malorie Blackman. The play tells the hard-hitting story of two young people, Sephy and Callum, who fall in love. Set in a dystopian world of racial hatred, inequality and violence, they fight against the barriers of racism and prejudice to be together. “This was a demanding play,” said Mrs Robinson, Lower School Librarian, “but the students were mesmerised by it. There were parts that were so tense that the audience was literally holding its breath. I was amazed by the students’ levels of maturity and it was a pleasure to spend the evening with such an interested and engaged group of young people.” ‘Noughts and Crosses’, the first in a series of four books, was published back in 2001 but has recently become one of the most borrowed books from the school library. Copies are available at both sites for any student who would like to read it, including a graphic novel version of the story. Year 7 and year 8 book clubs meet on alternate Fridays at 1.15pm in the Library at lower school and upper school book club meet on Thursday lunchtimes at upper school library - new members in all groups are always welcome.

The Purple Book Bus Returns Mrs Robinson
“The Book Bus” recently made a return visit to Highfields and provided students with a unique opportunity to check out the latest teen and young adult titles and to make recommendations for the school library. The distinctive, purple double-decker is a mobile book showroom for Browns Books for Students, the country’s leading school library supplier. It tours the country, visiting schools and colleges. The top deck has been transformed into a showroom with shelves of over 4,000 books, both fiction and non-fiction. All the students who boarded the bus, which visited both lower and upper school throughout the course of the day, were given a scanner so they could create their own “wish list” of titles they would like to see in the library. Students enjoyed browsing and many of their recommendations will be purchased for the school library and will be available for students to borrow after Easter. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to make sure that we’re stocking our school libraries with the books that our students really want to read. The students loved the whole experience and made some great book choices. They’ll see many of their chosen titles on the library shelves very soon.” said Mrs Robinson, Lower School Librarian. “I loved it! There were so many books to choose from. It was really cool.” said year 7 student, Erin.

Newsletter Highfields Dance Team Miss Bonsall
Friday 8 March was a busy day for the dance team at Highfields! Whilst Mrs Hollinrake and Mrs Redhead took 27 students to London’s Dance convention ‘Move It!’, Miss Bonsall and Mrs Petch took Highfields Youth Dance Company to Deda (Derby) to take part Interface - a dance competition. ‘Move It!’ is the world’s biggest dance event, celebrating all forms of dance and the performing arts across three amazing days. Our students were lucky enough to attend on Friday. The whole day was really successful. The students attended classes in lots of different styles from tap to hip hop, contemporary and musical theatre. There were performances from Wayne McGregor's company, Bird college and lots of inclusive companies. The students could attend seminars about career options and colleges offering placements and learn about auditions for Disney and Cruise ships. HYDC is our school dance group of year 9-13 students, choreographed and led by year 13 students Molly, Katy and Ben. These students work hard every Wednesday evening to produce great work. Our place at Deda in the Interface competition was gained through video selection. After our performance on Friday evening we could be selected to perform in the national Udance competition, representing the county! The students spent the day ‘teaching’ the rehearsal with a professional sound and lighting technician and took part in a dance workshop led by a professional from The Royal Opera House. In the evening performance, they were fantastic, overcame nerves, and did their very best! Year 13 students were really supportive and excellent leaders. The group have showed real dedication over the months - well done!

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Key Stage 2 High 5 Netball Tournament The KS2 High 5 netball tournament was a huge success in very cold and wet conditions at times on Friday 8 March. There were 118 students involved from Lea, All Saints, Darley Dale, Castle View, St Joseph’s, South Darley, Winster and Wessington primary schools. Highfields had 25 sports leaders on duty from years 8, 9 and 10 - they were awesome and very professional. A ‘well done’ also goes to the PE apprentices, especially Miss Tabbenor, as this was an observation towards her level 3 qualification.

Newsletter Girls Active Festival The Girls Active Festival took place on Thursday 14 March with GB tennis player, Jade Windley in attendance.
Primary evening On Wednesday 13 March South Darley and Elton Primary Schools took park in activities in the sports hall as part of week 3 of the primary evenings held at Highfields.
Young Ambassador Assembly The last young ambassador assembly for the 2019 tour took place at St Giles Primary School on Thursday 14 March. The final assembly was led by year 9 ambassador Holly.

Newsletter Sports Update Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Fixtures: Thursday 21 March 2019 The first team are away at Dronfield Henry Fanshaw playing in the quarter finals of the County Cup. Students will be leaving at 3.15pm and return at 5.45pm. Year 10 girls netball team are competing in the County Tournament at Littleover on Thursday and will be leaving before lunch. Their return time will be dependant upon how far they progress in the competition.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.
