Parent/Carer Notices Year 7 Parent Consultation Evening at Lumsdale (Upper School Site) The Year 7 Parent Consultation evening takes place next Tuesday (17 April 2018) in the Sports Hall at our Lumsdale site from 4pm-6.45pm for parent/carer consultation appointments. Students have been given appointment cards and reminded to make appointments with subject teachers. The tennis courts will be open for additional parking and can be accessed from the top car park at Lumsdale. Please can parents/carers ensure that when parking they do not block vehicular access to the track up to the tennis courts – thank you.
ParentPay Reminder for students in Years 11, 12 and 13 All Year 11, 12 or 13 students who use ParentPay to purchase meals or food in school will need to spend the remaining balance on their account before they leave Highfields (unless they are returning to the Sixth Form in September 2018). Any funds left on ParentPay accounts may be transferred to siblings or refunded at the discretion of the DCC Catering Manager based in school. Students will be reminded during assemblies and all students may use the cash machines in school to top up their accounts if required.
PTFA Meeting We have our next PTFA meeting on Wednesday 18 April 2018 from 6.30pm at Designate@the gate, Smedley Street – all parents/carers are welcome! Jo Glossop PTFA Secretary
Parent Governor Vacancy We have a Parent Governor vacancy on the School’s Governing Board. The Clerk to Governors has issued information to all parents/carers detailing how to stand for election, along with guidance on the requirements and expectations of being a Parent Governor. School News New York City Miss Bonsall
During the Easter holidays Miss Bonsall (Head of Drama), along with Mr O'Reilly (Senior Assistant Headteacher) and Mr Rowley (Head of Music) took a group of very excited GCSE and A Level students to New York for five days. All the students who attended study either Drama or Music at GCSE or A Level or are heavily involved in regular school productions. The highlights included participation in a performing arts workshop run by a professional, a Broadway Show and a visit to the many key locations and attractions in New York City. The group stayed in a four-star hotel in the area of Chelsea, a 10 minute walk from Times Square (where we spent a lot of time in awe!). We were also lucky enough to dine at Bubba Gump Shrimp (Featured in the famous film 'Forest Gump') and Ellen's Stardust Diner - a cabaret restaurant where all the waiters perform and sing whilst serving - it was great fun!
On the evening of our arrival we took in a visit to the Rockerfeller Centre where they went to the 'Top of the Rock' to see the city skyline by night which was breath taking and memorable for everyone. There were also backstage tours at Madison Square Gardens where students learnt about the legendary moments in history that took place in the most famous arena, and Radio City, where students met a real-life Rockette and got to step on the great stage in front of 6,000 (empty) seats! The group also visited the Winter Garden Theatre to see 'School of Rock' LIVE on Broadway; a dream come true for many. It was even more surreal to see the actor that they had met earlier that day in the Q&A session performing on stage as a Rock God! On the final full day we took in a visit to 9/11 memorial, Ground Zero and One World Trade Centre Observation Deck. This was a truly moving and inspirational day.

Final highlights include walking around Central Park to find landmarks such as the Alice in Wonderland Statue and the Imagine floor tiles which commemorates the place where John Lennon was shot taking the ferry to see The Statue of Liberty.
Miss Bonsall said: "The students were superbly behaved and very energetic and enthusiastic for the whole trip! They enjoyed every second and became particularly fond of Michael B the Radio City Tour Guide. I was very proud of them in the Broadway workshop too, taking advantage of every second they had and creating their own mini musical! They were a delight to take away and I was very proud of their theatre etiquette whilst watching the show too.�

Newsletter This trip was far more than a holiday. Based in an inspirational environment, it was an outstanding learning opportunity, enabling students to learn from professionals, develop performance techniques, experience new cultures and deepen their historical knowledge. Thomas who attended the trip said: 'I really enjoyed every moment of it and think it was worth every penny! My favourite part was the Broadway show because it featured mainly Rock-style songs which is my favourite genre of music.' Helen’s highlight was: 'the performance of School of Rock. It was amazing to see something on Broadway.' All the students (and staff) thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are desperate to go back again!

Newsletter Year 8 Book Club’s evening at the theatre (spoiler alert!) Molly in Year 8
On the evening of Monday 19 March a group of 26 students visited Nottingham Royal Centre to see a performance of “War Horse”, an adaptation of the book by Michael Morpurgo. Thanks to the wonderful librarians this trip was a massive success and hugely enjoyed by all the students. In the early evening we boarded the coach for the trip to Nottingham. We were all very excited and the theatre buzzed with anticipation. Finally, the lights fell over the audience and rose over the performers. Set in a country town, the first scene was lively, atmospheric and showed a horse, Joey, on the brink of a new life. Everyone was amazed at the master puppeteering of this horse. It was like the real thing! As we watched the horse and his owner, Albert, grow up, war grew closer. We were all shocked when Joey was sold to the army and even more so when Albert signed up to find him. The war scenes were incredibly realistic and we all jumped at the sudden gunshots. After the interval, when we enjoyed ice-creams and sweets, the second-half showed Joey swapping sides in the war and getting trapped in No Man’s Land. I won’t reveal too much of the story, but at the end everyone stood and applauded at this amazing production before we sleepily boarded the bus back home. We would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Robinson, Mrs Brown and Mr Redhead for organising the trip.

The Health Day was a great success receiving lots of positive feedback from the Year 10 students. The students took part in workshops in the following areas: Breast Cancer and Testicular Awareness, Drugs, Relationships and STI`s, Self Defence, Zumba and Fitness, and Trampolining.

Mr Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Sports Fixtures: Monday 16 April 2018 – Swimming Inter-School Swimming Gala at Eckington Swimming Baths – members of the squad will be issued with their individual times (students will leave Highfields at 11.35am).
Thursday 19 April 2018 – Football Years 10 & 11 girls football team are away at Tupton Hall playing a GCSE moderation football match. Students will leave at 1.30pm for a 2pm kick-off and return to Lumsdale at 4pm.
Friday 20 April 2018 – Golf Sixth students from Years 10 and 11 are representing Highfields at The Derbyshire Schools Golf Competition starting at 10am. Students will be given their allocated tee-off time next week.

Highfields Sports Leaders Academy Awards Evening 2018 Thank you to students, parents/carers, guests and staff for attending another successful Sports Leaders Awards Evening on 22 March with guest of honour, Lydia Greenway from England Cricket – what a great night! The Awards ranged from students in Year 6 through to Year 13 and it was brilliant to see past students Grace Pickford, Julie Pritty and Sam Elliott come back to Highfields. On next few pages there are photographs of groups of leaders who were able to be with us at the Awards Evening.

Our Year 13 Sports Leaders, Emma and Joe who are taking the Higher Sport Leaders Award told us all how their life in school had been impacted by the awards. Year 11 student Alisha, the overall Leader of the Year, explained how she had accepted the many opportunities she had been given. Alisha told the audience the exciting journey she had been on and that she was looking forward to the Easter holiday Girls Active Coaches Camp at Loughborough University with fellow leader Holly. Lydia told the story of her journey to reach her goal of playing cricket for England and encapsulated the school’s aim to ‘be the best you can’. The key message from Lydia was to always set goals, be very specific about the goals you set and re-evaluate when you achieve them ready for the next stage in your life. A big thank you to the PE Sport Apprentices who were brilliant on the night, alongside Mrs Turner and Mr Shirtcliffe, ensuring all ran to plan.
SEN Boccia Competition On Friday 23 March our PE Apprentices, together with Year 10 Leader Livvy, did an amazing job running the SEN Boccia competition for primary students, hosted by All Saints this year as Mrs Turner was running the Year 10 Health Day at Lumsdale in the Sports hall. Eight teams competed for the trophy which was won by Lea Primary with All Saints as runners up.
2018 Girls Active Camp Year 11 students Alisha and Holly went to the 2018 Girls Active Coaches Camp at Loughborough University from Friday 23 March - Sunday 25 March. They were inspired by many coaches and mentors - England football legend Casey Stoney and Tennis Coach Judy Murray.

Newsletter Highfields Primary & Secondary Gifted & Talented PE Group On Wednesday 11 April Nutritionist Rupert Aikman from Nottingham Healthy Eating Solutions came into school to meet and talk to the Highfields Gifted & Talented PE group. He spoke on a healthy diet for athletes and the kind of foods to eat. This group are a part of the Youth Sport Trust (YST) programme that allows them to undertake online modules around performance and goal setting and maintaining balance between academic studies and a talent pathway for a talented athlete. Their next workshop is a core strength and conditioning workshop run by Kim Robinson.
Primary School Sports Evenings Week 3 of the Primary School Sports Evenings took place on Wednesday 11 April with Elton Primary and South Darley Primary. The sessions were run by PE Apprentice, Mr Molyneux, and the Highfields Sports Leaders.

Last week’s maths quiz answer … Sara makes a list of the whole numbers in ascending order which do not have 9s as any of their digits. 1 is the first number on Sara's list. What is the 300th number on Sara's list?
Solution: 363 Most of the time, for every block of 10 numbers, Sara will only count 9. For example, Sara will only count 9 of the numbers 1 - 10, and she will only count 9 of the numbers 11 - 20, and so on. An exception to this is the numbers 90 - 99, because Sara won't count any of those.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home.
